ALL PROGRAMS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

THOUGHTS FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRPERSON

THE SEASON OF CHANGE As the weather changes on Delmarva, there are also transitions happening here at Wicomico Public Libraries. In October, we said goodbye to our Executive Director, Andrea Berstler. During her time with us, she accomplished much both inside and outside the library. Andrea, staff, and a focus group comprised of various members of the community developed a new strategic plan for the library. She also revived the adult literacy program, Project READ, and started the Homework Help Center, a place where children receive one-on-one tutoring and get free materials for their school assignments and projects. She expanded greatly the role of the Friends, who then created the Light of Literacy, an event to honor those individuals who work to promote reading and learning within the community. Mrs. Berstler coordinated with various community organizations to hold the first-ever Salisbury Book Festival and also Salisbury Reads, a program where a chosen book was distributed among and discussed with members of the community. Vital internal improvements, such as outside lighting, new carpet on the main floor of the library, renovated public bathrooms, and a new HVAC system were completed under her directorship. We wish Andrea the best in her new position as Executive Director in Carroll County, Maryland. The search for a new Executive Director of Wicomico Public Libraries is underway and the Search Committee is busy reviewing applications and talking with candidates. It will be hard to replace Andrea’s passion and energy, but the Board is optimistic about the process and hopes to have someone in place soon. As the year draws to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on our many successes. Wicomico County students are now able to use their lunch numbers to check out up to five library materials, fine free! The library’s Reader Van, which delivers early literacy materials to local daycare centers, continues to grow and thrive. We also implemented a new ILS system, Polaris, paid for by the Eastern Shore Regional Library (ESRL), which should make placing items on hold easier and more efficient for patrons. An Economic Impact Study, completed by Salisbury University’s Business Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON), will show the community and government officials the library’s monetary effect on local area businesses. The Board looks forward to hiring a new Executive Director who will continue to develop community relationships and also offer innovative and inclusive library programs and services! Maida Finch, Ph.D. Chairperson
