project brief:

To create a warm, welcoming pub and hotel for people passing through or exploring the Blue Mountains. A place to bring the family, have a chat with a mate, have a feed and a drink, have a rest for the night or retreat for a few days. Apple Jack Hospitality require a pub with multiple spaces to dine or relax, an outdoor beer garden and rooms for patrons to stay in that have ensuites connected to each room.

concept:

Tanderra - meaning resting place A cozy familiar pub, fire crackling, echoes of laughter, the smell of a roast dinner. Be transformed into a warm, welcoming space after a long, drive, hike or day of sight seeing. Tanderra will be a place for families to have a good meal, old friends to catch up and have a beer or stay the night or two in the upstairs suits after a long day taking on the Aussie bush.

client: Applejack Hospitality, a Sydney based hospitality group founded in 2011 by Hamish Watts and Ben Carroll. The passionate duo are determined to challenge the status quo and lead the industry by delivering unique venues to bring people together, creating epic concepts and magic experiences. (Applejack Hospitality, n.d) They are wanting to expand to the Blue Mountains creating a memorable location to visit. Drawing inspiration from their current venues Bopp and Tone, Forrest’s, The Botanist and Taphouse.

client research: Bopp and Tone, 2019 Hospitality - Eat & Drink Sydney Design Awards winner is a bar and restaurant located in the heart of Sydney. Designers Luchetti Krelle were approached by Apple Jack Hospitality Group to design a space that reflected Applejacks owners Grandfathers, Keith ‘Bopp’ Evans and Anthony ‘Tone’ Adams. Anthony and Keith both shared a love of life with a nostalgic, optimistic view after living in the World War II period. This became the brief of ‘Bopp and Tone’, a post-World War II bar/restaurant that reflects the nostalgia and optimism of the time. This space evokes a feeling of lavishness and grandeur, the style is lived-in luxury, comfortable yet expensive feel. Materiality has been carefully considered featuring heavy marbles, traditional tiles and a rich variety of textures. To embrace Sydney’s outdoor climate, the terrace seamlessly integrates with the street offering lush greenery. The indoors also seamlessly connects with the outdoors. Furniture selection features classic bentwood chairs, rich walnut timber tables, art deco style light fixtures and lush textiles. These have influenced my materiality and furniture choices as their design style is similar to my brief. In the ways of sustainability, the reduction of waste and demolition was the main concern to create a small footprint in the renovation. The space was a pre-existing restaurant, and although it was 10 years old the kitchen and amenities were able to be reused limiting the amount demolished. Unfortunately, this is the only sustainable consideration in the fit out. Reflecting on this, my design will not only consider renovation waste but how energy is being used, what materials are made of and produced. In summary, Bopp and Tone beautifully captures the nostalgia and optimism of the post-World War II era. It radiates lavishness and grandeur with its carefully chosen materials and furniture. While the project aimed to minimize waste during renovation, it’s important to consider broader sustainability factors. As the design industry evolves, integrating sustainability principles into projects like ‘Bopp and Tone’ is crucial to align with eco-conscious values.

design criteria:

PROGRAM To create warmth within the space lighting will need to be considered (diffusion through curtains may be required, how light will reach to centre of the room, lighting at night this may include, task lighting and overhead lights). To make the space accessible to those in wheel chairs lifts, circulation/ corridor allowances and ramps will be added to areas that it is required, as well as an ambulant and disabled bathroom. SPATIAL PLANNING The main considerations of spatial planning will be with furniture placement to meet industry standards and requirements as well as creating a warm space. The upstairs areas are on the smaller side so layout needs to be considered to reach maximum potential of the space. A studio can be used as a retreat for a family holiday, newly weds or even be turned to a private dining experience. MATERIALITY Kurraras materiality has been seriously considered to create an eccletic memorable interior whilst feeling familiar. Fabrics, joinery, flooring and furnishings will be a mix between soft, durable, and easy to clean whilst being commercial grade. DETAILING To keep the downstairs area warm it will feature brushed brass hardware, light fixtures and detailing as well as a warm colour palette featuring many patterns. Elements from the exisiting building will be kept to show the history and character of the building.
