FACILITY ENTRANCE

An entrance filled with greenery, giving the initial impression of textural detailing through materials that are continuously utilised in the design throughout the facility. It is an introduction to the core materiality through the facade: travertine, timber and brick. With skylights leading the pathway into this immersive facility.

A space where all residents and visitors enter into the facility and become immersed in the full modernist inspiration of the design. This reception and waiting area celebrates colour, art, lighting and materiality of mid century design. The textures and iconic lighting are all continuous throughout several spaces in the facility.

An immersive space to inspire an initial sense of home and express the influence of modernist design. STELLA MARIS PROPOSAL

With a continuation of materials, this courtyard seamlessly blends into the entire facility design. The expansive courtyard was design around the idea of softness in curves and embraces native landscape, drawing from the site’s surroundings. With a curved cover to welcome residents into the space where they’re embraced with soft moss ground covering. Courtyard residential rooms open into this serene scape.

This expansive and serene courtyard is a place for residents to enjoy the outdoors and sunshine in facility privacy.

This is the residential room that will be home to low medium care paitents. It is built for residents who are still capable of using general home facilities independently while still providing adapted needs. With either an ocean or courtyard view, all resident rooms are provided an extra sense of serenity by the outdoor surroundings.

PALLIATIVE CARE

ROOM

This room is dedicated to the palliative care unit on the first floor of the facility. Palliative patients are provided these rooms on overlooking either the ocean or courtyards. The location of the unit is conveniently located next to the ambulance bay. The change of timber, marble and overall colour scheme is aimed to be reflective of the particular circumstances and work to help bring an overall calm to the room.

This dedicated family room acts as a place of rest for the family of palliative patients. This room is fit with a kitchenette, bed, bathroom, balcony and lounging area. It brings a sense of peace in such a difficult time and works to help support grieving family members.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Stella Maris is a high-end aged care facility, designed to inspire nostalgia through modernist design. Accommodating our elderly demographic who lived through an era of mid-century design, this residence will instigate a comforting, homily feel, enhancing quality of life. With many fearful of their future living in aged care, Stella Maris strives to lead a progressive change towards to the design of aged care facilities. Many aspects of this project are reflective of the most iconic modernist designers of the past. The immersive colour palette draws from the surrounding landscape of the site and works to highlight the incredible coastal location.

BRIEF With the progression of respect and care for our elderly demographic it is important to further improve the places they live towards the end of their time here. Many elderly individuals are fearful of making the move to aged care facilities. Among other reasons, this is commonly due to their knowledge of how nursing homes used to be when their own grandparents were in these homes. They are known as a hospital-like and dull place. Although age care facilities have come a long way since this time, the design of them be pushed even further to better enhance elderly care and their wellbeing whilst in aged care facilities.

UB DESIGN STUDIO

Taking core inspiration from modernist design, this project will give a sense of familiarity and beauty in exquisite design, Taking typical nursing home features and elevating them to be architectural.

The material palette makes notable reference to the work of Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. Textural layering is a key feature seen in the material scheme of beige brick, timber cladding, multiple marbles, mixed metals and coloured carpets. Every coloured material works to reference the surrounding landscape of the site.

SITE

INFORMATION Stella Maris was established in 1964, offering care to elderly individuals in both low and high care, additionally offering palliative care services within their facility. Known for its incredible view of the Pacific Ocean, this home was in high demand. This facility provides incredible support through many fundraising initiatives, recreational programs and supportive relationships with the Stella Maris community. In 2013, extensive renovations where conducted on all three levels. The levels are as follows: - Level 1 (Marian Wing) has 28 low care ageing in place rooms - Level 2 (Mercy Wing) has 24 high care rooms - Level 3 (Mercedes Wing) has 20 low care rooms.

UB DESIGN STUDIO

The specified site is located in Cronulla in the Sutherland Shire local government area, approximately 30km south of Sydney CBD. Surrounding suburbs include Woolooware, Greenhills Beach, Bundeena and Burraneer. The Cronulla Esplanade, where the site is located, is also surrounded by Gunnamatta Bayto the west, Port Hacking to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The East side of the site boarders The Esplanade, where there is a coastal path outlooking the expansive ocean views, often busy with people walking, running and bike riding. It is a short distance from the central area of Cronulla with access to shopping, food and nightlife.

FLORIDA HOUSE BY NEST ARCHITECTS

This is a cosy, seaside, Victorian family home, designed by Nest Architects. This coastal property is home to a family of five who wanted a serene, private home with a priority of a feeling of lightness. This home needed to be able to adapt to the way the family’s lifestyle would change as their children grew up and inevitably leave home. The family seeks a home of refuge, rest and tranquillity. This intimate home was designed taking inspiration from classic mid-century homes, keeping family practically in mind. ‘The result is a home that’s as practical as it is thoroughly gorgeous, blurring the line between modernist design principles, and contemporary design.’ The material palette is one of the most notable features of this home, being simplistic and repetitive yet nostalgic, textural and very effective. The home features brick, timber, concrete and marble as the core materials.

UB DESIGN STUDIO

The exterior of the home consists mainly of the consistent beige brick and green fascia, setting the tone for the interior of the home. The most heavily used materiality in the home is timber. The ceilings are finished with timber slates, as well as all door and joinery finishes. Customised timber joinery is used in every space of the house, for shelving, drawers, cupboards, in built seating and desks. This kind of materiality is heavily influenced by modernist design work from designers like Harry Seidler and Richard Neutra.

Certain subtle colour changes signify transition of zoning within the home, like red in the living room transitioning to blue to highlight the change to the dining room. The high windows are utilised around the home to allow light to flood the spaces, without compromising privacy. The greenery plays a significant role is completing this home, utilising several native Australian species to pay homage to the nature of the site as well as using flora to play into the colour palette of the home. The modernist influence of this design closely resonates with my project, making many aspects of it inspirational. Most notably, the traditionally modernist material palette melded with more contemporary influences is done in an effective way to make the design feel current while still having an obvious modernist reference. The brick, timber ceilings and walls, large scale windows, geometric and curved forms, and marble features are all coherent with recognisable modernist design traits.
