Justin Hemmes is an Australian businessman and principal of the Merivale Group, a retail, hospitality and entertainment group that owns over 100 pubs, restaurants and other venues across Australia. Such venues included Mr Wong, the Coogee Pavilion, Mimis’, Totti’s, etc. Hemmes stated in a 2020 interview that “I’m led by opportunities. As an opportunity presents itself, then I decide if I take it up or not” and thus, has seen a prime opportunity at Wanda Surf Life Saving Club. He has seen opportunity in transforming this venue into Cronulla’s first Beach Club Pavilion, taking inspiration from his well established Pavilion in Coogee.

BRIEF

To incorporate the existing Wanda Surf Life Saving Club into Justin Hemmes’ transformative vision of Cronulla’s beach club scene. This will be achieved by renovating the first floor of the site into an all-week-long restaurant and bar that is to include a bar, kitchen, informal and formal seating, standing areas/event space, bars & related amenities. The existing ground floor facilities are to remain untouched to allow for continuous training & development for the Wanda lifesavers. This project is to take inspiration from existing Merivale venues (such as Coogee Pavilion) as well as other beach clubs and pavilions explored during Precedent Resarch and incorporating this into an Australian take of mediterranean design influences.

The Wanda Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) was formed in 1946 and since that, the clubhouse in 1947. This site is the hub of Wanda Beach which is Cronulla’s north most patrolled beach along the Bate Bay coastline. The latest extension to the building was in 2015 to bring it to its current configuration. For lifeguards to provide these services to the public, the Wanda Surf Club provides facilities in the form of club rooms, training and storage rooms, washrooms, etc, on the ground floor of the site. Aside from the fact that the venue is a little further away from the main commercial centre, Wanda SLSC attracts a crowd every Sunday during the summer months with the first floor being a public bar/restaurant.

IDEATION

CONCEPT

The transformation of the Wanda SLSC is to harmonise the indoors & outdoors, achieved through an emphasise on natural lighting, inclusion of bi-fold doors, lushious plants throughout and bars that are internally & externally accessable. Customers are encouraged to emmerse themselves in an authentic Australian beach club experience as they are surrounded by the beautiful Bate Bay coastline. This authenticity is to be translated to the interiors through an Australian take on European/ Mediterranean design. Earthy tones, natural materials and a pop of colour. One is to feel relaxed and untroubled as the sound of the ocean paired with sociable laughter and carefully considered design makes for an exuberant atmosphere.

THE WAVERLY BURLEIGH PAVILION

THE WAVERLY Location: 2005 San Elijo Ave, Cardiff, CA 92007, USA Designer: Design 4 Corners

Client: Eric Johnson

Brief: Design 4 Corners aimed to create an all-day upscale European cafe/restaurant with a focus of Mediterranean and Eastern European cuisine which is reflected in the final design of the interior. The design team took conceptual ideas from the all-day cafes of Bali and Melbourne and developed inspiration from the atmosphere of these venues bringing the outdoors in.

Material Board:

MATERIALITY The designer achieved the desire to bring the outdoors in through an abundance of indoor palm trees as well as fabric panels on the ceiling that gently move with the sea breeze. The large space is enhanced by the pale, sandy chairs and sofas which absorb the sun rays that pour in through the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. The venue has provided customers with an array of seating options (formal and informal), but no matter where you sit, the space feels spacious and bright. Materiality is utilised to create spatial zoning as seen through a change in floor material - pink honed marble tiles indicate bar seating whilst walkways and formal dining have a timber/ tiled pattern and booth seating is located on a raised timber step. Texture is a predominant design feature of this venue, with almost all aspects of the space adding some unique textural element. Each support beam is wrapped in a rattan rope which compliments the smooth stucco walls and glossy, marble countertops. The booth seating is a mix of leather and teal velvet upholstery paired with glossy, marble table tops that have a brushed brass stem. The teal velvet upholstery adds a bold pop of colour that creates a coastal aroma and ties together the blue grout found between the bar tiling. The ceiling has an intricate ceiling feature made from fabric - the beige colour of the fabric doesn’t overpower the space but still allows for another textural element.

BURLEIGH PAVILION Location: 3a/43 Goodwin Terrace, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220 Designer: Alexander & Co

Client: Eric Mav

Brief: The client requested a design that reflected childhood Burleigh Heads memories, in saying this, Alexander & Co focused on design that is sympathetic to retro Palm Springs architecture. This venue was to be robust and easily maintained, appealing equally to guests who walk straight off the beach and to those enjoying a smart dinner/lunch. Thus, the final design was to evoke a sense of 1970s beach nostalgia in which the existing building transforms into Australia’s quintessential bistro on the coast. Material Board:

MATERIALITY White-painted walls and pastel furnishings create a “sun-drenched” aesthetic which is paired with rattan-lined ceilings. The majority of the floor is covered with concrete with spatial zoning created through pavings of irregularly-shaped chunks of stone. Splashes of colour are visible through mint-green chairs and rose-coloured tiles that have been used to clad the front of the bar counter. This same shade of pink has also been applied to the inside of cabinets that store crockery and the hole-punctured breeze blocks that line the restaurant’s walkways. Decorations for the venue are in the form of leafy potted plants and shiny-gold wall sconces. To match the more informal atmosphere of The Pavilion brasserie, seating comprises timber high tables and deep blue stools. Butter-yellow sofas and umbrella-shaded benches appear in the open-air dining area that directly overlooks the beach, a standout feature of the pavilion. Strings of exposed bulbs provide lighting in the evenings. The venue has included a set of outdoor showers so that beachgoers can rinse off before sitting down to eat in the venue. This design feature is something that I would like to consider using in the final design of Wanda Surf Club. The entrance, which is shrouded by a concrete canopy, is defined by two palm trees and a pink metal lettering to announce the presence of Burleigh Pavilion, reveals the Palm Springs influence that Alexander & Co drew from for this design. As a part of Alexander & Co’s new series of low-cost material fitout projects, they have maintained the existing external materials to maximise efficiency and in turn reduce wastage. This is also evident through the incorporation of sustainable materials and low VOC fabrics.

Sophie Davison is an emerging Australian Interior Designer from Sydney. Sophie grew up on the south coast of Australia which played a major part in her design style as well as her desire to utilise sustainable products and practices. She embraces contemporary coastal design that is sympathetic to Mediterranean and Spanish Revival influences. Her attention to detail allows for the cultivation of harmonious spaces that meet the unique needs of each project brief whilst still reflecting Sophie’s personal style.
