Ekaterina Romankin is a Sydney-based interior designer. Her approach to interior design focuses on the site’s context and draws inspiration from the surrounding people, environment, and natural elements. Conceptually driven, she aims to design spaces that have a purpose, spaces that will not only be aesthetically pleasing but functional and ergonomic. Integrating natural materials that provide a textural element, sustainability and innovative design ideas, her interiors are unique and designed with the specific intent of human comfort and liveability. Through her designs, Ekaterina offers interiors that inspire individuals and elevate the human experience.

S c a p e S t u d e n t A c c om m o d a t i on i s f u r t h e r expanding their locations in order to accommodate for the rise in both domestic and international students in Australia. They require a location that is unique, is authentically Australian and uses the surrounding landscape, history and context to create a beautiful design. Whilst still reflecting the brand identity of Scape, this design is focused on the revival of Artspace Galley in the time for a national call for country that faces Australia today.

CLIENT SCAPE LUXURY STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
Scape is an Australia wide student accomodation organisation with buildings based in big cities and central locations such as Syndey (13 properties), Melbourne (11 properties), Brisbane (6 properties) and Adelaide (3 properties). Scape seeks to create healthier environments for students. They aim to make the most of living in the city chosen, enable students to make new friends, and provide a fun social and living aspect to the university life. Scape locations are often in the city centre, providing students easy access to public transport, restuarants and cafes, areas for exercise, and the general hustle and bustle of the city life. The Scape brand is sustainably minded and aims to create a fun, safe and independant environment for students during the study period. They are an organisation independent from on campus living provided by some universities and through this they manage to create more space for students needing a place to live, whilst also providing them with a collaborative environment during university. They house students of all cultures, genders and ages that attend a variety of different universities, providing a well rounded uni experience.

THE SITE 11-13 RANDLE STREET, SURRY HILLS
11-13 Randle Street is a heritage listed building. It was built in 1912 and used by ladies hat manufacturer, R.C. Henderson. The old building represents the surge of industrial development that overtook Surry Hills in the early 20th Century and is associated with the major changes in the Surry Hills suburb which included the construction of Central Station. The building is historically significant for its connection to the Australian production of felt and straw hats, sold throughout Australia and overseas. The production of hats demonstrates is connection to the textile and clothing industry which spread wide throughout Surry Hills in the 1910s-1950s. Later, in the 1980s, the building became a temporary art gallery known as “The Artspace Gallery” which showcased contemporary indigenous Australian artwork which was deemed not good enough for larger comercial art galleries. This lasted a decade before the gallery moved to a permanent location. The building has been unused for several years.

DESIGN STATEMENT ARTSCAPE STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
ArtScape Student Accommodation in Surry Hills is a reimagination of Scape Student Accomodation through a new interior design concept. Drawing from the site’s rich context, including the history, environment and people, the design is welcoming, unique and comfortable for students. In a time of a national call for country in Australia, this design draws from the site’s past as Artspace Gallery in the 1980s; the gallery showcased Indigenous artwork that commercial galleries refused to showcase. Due to an increase in both domestic and international students, the concept of this design is diversity: diversity in the people and the Australian environment. The design is elevated through its Australian-sourced furniture, unique and sustainable materiality, and captivating story experienced throughout the interior.

ArtScape Student Accommodation is a new and exciting Scape location in the heart of Sydney. Celebrating the rich history of the building and First Nations people, this design in inspiring, authentic and seeks to provide home away from home to a variety of different students. This development provides affordable and accessible living and a place for a community in need of a home. This design is a piece of art, with a conceptually rich story through materiality, furniture and, most importantly, artwork. The design draws from the diverse Australian landscape and Australian people and provides a creative and inspiring place to live for a short period of time. Celebrating the artistic background of the site, the space will be unique and focused on creating a human friendly environment with a keen focus on accessibility to allow for diversity. This means limiting the cramming of as many people in one space, using design solutions to create a space in which humans and the natural Australian landscape can coexist, and using the existing space in innovative and creative ways which promotes students to be themselves, use their creativity and thrive in an unknown and new environment.
