Paisley Piper is an Aboriginal Tasmanian from Lutruwita (Tasmania). Her design journey has been profoundly influenced by her personal philosophy, inspired by the French philosopher Michel Serres’ book “The Natural Contract.” She believes in a symbiotic utopia where humans and nature coexist, with each giving as much as they take. This philosophy forms the core of her work in interior design, where she merges biophilia and biomimicry principles to create spaces that seamlessly integrate nature in innovative ways. Her designs not only enhance

living environments but also give back to nature, reflecting her commitment to sustainable practices and deep respect for her heritage. Additionally, Paisley is dedicated to crafting spaces that mirror her admiration for mid-century design. During the mid-century period, environmental activism was on the rise, closely aligning with her own values, all of which are artfully represented in her designs.

PHILOSOPHY

TAHUNE LINAH preliminaries

Paisley, a Palawa woman from Lutruwita (Tasmania), has cultivated a profound interior design philosophy centred on establishing a symbiotic utopia between design and nature. Her philosophy prioritises the harmonious integration of natural elements, sustainable practices, and the well-being of clients. Paisley’s philosophy is firmly rooted in the notion of restoring the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Throughout history, human development has often come at the cost of the environment. Her philosophy emphasises shifting from destructive practices to biophilic design, which seeks to create beauty and serenity without harming nature. This approach advocates for a world where humans and nature coexist as equals, contributing positively to the planet’s well-being through thoughtful design.

Furthermore, her philosophy recognises the significant impact of biophilic design on mental health, aligning with society’s growing awareness of the importance of well-being. By integrating natural elements into interior design, she aims to nurture occupants’ psychological and emotional needs, creating spaces that encourage serenity, creativity, and social interaction, ultimately promoting happiness and productivity.

Paisley’s philosophy is also deeply informed by society’s heightened awareness of humanity’s environmental impact, particularly in terms of climate change. Architecture and design are responsible for a significant portion of global carbon dioxide emissions. Her philosophy extends beyond individual designs, aiming to address larger social factors such as sustainable communities and social responsibility. By promoting sustainable practices and supporting local artisans, she seeks to foster a sense of social responsibility within the interior design field.

In conclusion, Paisley’s interior design philosophy offers a compelling vision for the future of design. It promotes a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, addresses mental health through biophilic design, and embraces a socially responsible approach. Her philosophy calls on designers to treat nature with respect and incorporate it into their creations, contributing to a more sustainable and harmonious world.

TOPOG

GRAPHY

TAHUNE LINAH preliminaries

Judbury, a charming rural locality in the heart of Tasmania’s Huon Valley, boasts a history deeply rooted in both Indigenous heritage and European settlement. Prior to European arrival, Indigenous Tasmanian Aboriginal groups inhabited the region, drawing sustenance from its rich natural resources. In the early 19th century, European colonisers established their presence, killing many of the surrounding mob. The timber industry, centred around the prized Huon Pine, thrived alongside agriculture. Fertile soils nurtured apple, cherry, and fruit orchards, becoming integral to the local economy. Today, Judbury is a peaceful rural community blending historical and modern influences. It remains part of the picturesque Huon Valley, known for its natural beauty, agriculture, and conservation efforts to protect its unique environment.
