Whitaker Center Launches Girls STEM Initiative Our daily lives are filled with experiences involving technology, which reinforce an important reality. The tech industry is growing faster than nearly all other industries today. Over the past 10 years, growth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs has been nearly three times that of non-STEM jobs. STEM occupations, which are projected to grow by 17% through 2018, represent an important opportunity for economic growth, as STEM workers earn 26% more in wages than their non-STEM counterparts. Despite this impressive growth trend and the abounding opportunities, the tech industry is losing women. Young women earned 37% of the computer science degrees in 1985. That number has dropped dramatically to 18%, with women making up only 22% of the software engineers at tech companies today. This isn’t a problem just for women; the future of innovation in our country is at risk. Innovation thrives on diversity, and a vibrant future will depend on our ability to attract women and individuals with different backgrounds and experiences to the opportunities in STEM. Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is positioned better than ever to make a real difference in STEM education. Nurturing an interest in the STEM disciplines through fun and challenging experiences is a natural fit with the mission of interactive science centers, such as our Harsco Science Center. For example, our wildly popular Expedition Chesapeake and Surgery Live! programs were created with the common goal of engaging young students in science, by harnessing technology and promoting innovative learning experiences. And even more exciting is what lies ahead. In the coming months, Whitaker Center will launch a series of programs and activities to encourage the interests of young girls in STEM. The initiative will include weekend programs, summer camps as well as after school programs designed specifically for girls in grades four through eight. Our goal is to reach 400 young girls each year through this innovative effort. The project will be supported by a generous five-year grant from the Stabler Foundation. Since the majority of our team of educators is female, they are thrilled to have the opportunity to support the interest of girls in the disciplines, which excited them when they were young students. To learn more about the Girls STEM Initiative and to get involved, please visit us at whitakercenter.org.

10,000 Maniacs With special guests Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett of Little Feat Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Friday, January 23 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm 10,000 Maniacs was originally formed in 1981 by singer Natalie Merchant and guitarist John Lombardo. Other members of the sextet, included Robert Buck (guitar), Steven Gustafson (bass), Dennis Drew (keyboards), and Jerry Augustyniak (drums). The group gigged extensively and recorded independently, before signing with Elektra and releasing The Wishing Chair in 1985. After 1992’s Our Time in Eden had finished its run on the charts, Merchant announced she was leaving to pursue a solo career. MTV Unplugged was released a few months after her departure. The remaining 10,000 Maniacs decided to continue performing, adding the folk-rock duo ‘John & Mary’ (original member Lombardo and violinist/new lead vocalist Mary Ramsey). The new line-up released Love Among the Ruins. The band remained a staple on the folk-rock circuit and in 2011 released their first new recording in a decade, Triangles. That year, the 10,000 Maniacs performed two 30th anniversary concerts in their hometown of Jamestown, New York. Music from the Motion Picture (2013) – is the band’s first new album in 14 years.

The Musical Box Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Friday, February 6 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm Internationally renowned for its high quality historic recreations of the early Genesis concerts, the Musical Box is the only band licensed and supported by Genesis and Peter Gabriel. Formed in Montreal, Quebec in 1993, the band was originally a seven-piece group; incorporating visual effects and costumes to reflect the original Genesis shows of the ‘70s. With the addition of Denis Gagné as the new lead singer in 1995, the Musical Box reformed as a five-piece group, mirroring the 70s-era Genesis. In 2000 the Musical Box purchased the rights from Peter Gabriel and Genesis to recreate The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. In addition, the band was granted full access to Genesis’s original album master tapes, in order to reproduce the sound live on stage. The band has performed nearly 1,000 concerts in front of over one million fans in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Olympia in Paris. 10

Kat Edmonson with special guest Robert Ellis Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Friday, February 27 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm Kat Edmonson seemingly came out of nowhere in 2009, taking the Austin, TX music scene by storm. Determined to be a singer, Edmonson auditioned for Fox’s American Idol during its second season. Back in Texas, Edmonson became a regular at a premier Austin club, building a following and making musical connections that energized her career. Her self- released 2009 debut album Take To the Sky, hit the top 20 on Billboard’s Jazz charts, which led to performing gigs with Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett. A musical kinship with Lovett led to a high-profile duet on the Christmas classic Baby, It’s Cold Outside, which the pair performed together on tour, as well as on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. During Edmonson’s tour with Lovett, she opened nightly, performing her original material. This set the stage for Way Down Low; Edmonson’s second record and first, to showcase her as an established singer/ songwriter. Despite its humble beginnings, Way Down Low recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and has since landed Edmonson a feature on NPR’s All Things Considered.

Jesse Cook Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Saturday, February 28 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm Known as one of the most influential figures in “nuevo flamenco” music, Jesse Cook incorporates elements of flamenco rumba, jazz and many other forms of world music into his work. The Canadian guitarist, composer, and producer has recorded eight studio albums, three live DVDs and has traveled the world, exploring musical traditions -- blending into his style of rumba flamenco. In addition to headlining concerts and festivals, Cook has opened for such legends as B.B. King, Ray Charles and Diana Krall. Cook has also performed with Welsh soprano Charlotte Church on The Tonight Show and toured with legendary Irish band, The Chieftains. In 2001, Cook won a Juno Award in the Best Instrumental Album category for Free Fall. In 2009, he was Acoustic Guitar magazine’s Player’s Choice Award silver winner in the Flamenco category. In addition, Cook is a three-time winner of the Canadian Smooth Jazz award for Guitarist of the Year.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers Badder Than Ever Tour Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Wednesday, March 11 I Whitaker Center at the Forum, 8pm More than four decades, over 8,000 live shows, and some 15 million albums sold worldwide later, George Thorogood is still thrilling audiences with his electrifying music, and remains the most bad-to-the-bone performer in rock. For George and his longtime band – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – their new Badder Than Ever Tour is indestructible proof that staying true to yourself and the music can still mean something. The band’s catalog of classic super hits includes: Who Do You Love, I Drink Alone, One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer, Move It On Over, Bad To The Bone and more, among others. Nevertheless, that self-titled and now-classic debut would soon be certified Gold. Over the course of sixteen studio albums (including six Gold and two Platinum discs), George Thorogood & The Destroyers stormed the charts, by putting their own stamp on nuggets by Hank Williams, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and more. Ultimately, the 2015 Badder Than Ever tour is 50% celebration, 50% declaration and 100% Thorogood throw down.

Tommy Emmanuel Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Thursday, March 12 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm Two-time Grammy® Award nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected guitarists of all time. The legendary fingerpicker has a professional career that spans nearly five decades around the globe. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this “fingerpicker” style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans. By age ten, Emmanuel had performed his way across Australia. Since then, his popularity in the U.S. has grown through his endless list of honors, awards, and live performances. In 2009, Emmanuel was honored with Guitar Player magazine’s most prestigious annual Guitar Legend Award. He has also been named Thumbpicker of the Year, three times. Emmanuel’s recorded work features 22 musical recordings, including solos, duets, and ensembles, cover tunes, and originals, with both electric and acoustic guitars. In 2010, Emmanuel released his latest solo 2-disc album Little By Little to great reviews.

Très Bonne Année 2014 – Trinchero Family Estates: Italy Inspired, California Driven Très Bonne Année 2014 was another successful year. The weekend of events was filled with spectacular wines from Trinchero Family Estates, remarkable food prepared by the Hilton Harrisburg, and exciting silent and live auctions. The Vintner’s Dinner was a delightful kickoff to the weekend’s events Carlo Trinchero from Trinchero Family Estates with a first-class, multi-course meal on the stage of Sunoco Performance Theater. The Vintner’s Tasting on Friday evening offered a tutorial tasting of Trinchero Family Estates wines. Both wine connoisseurs and novice enthusiasts enjoyed the event. Finally, the Très Bonne Année Gala and Wine Auction on Saturday evening was yet again a charming night of delicious food, intriguing silent and live auction items and, of course, exquisite wine. This year’s Fund-A-Need live auction lot, which was offered during the Gala and Wine Auction on Saturday evening will help fund the Whitaker Center Educational Outreach Fund (WCEOF). WCEOF makes funds available in order to offer reduced admission fees for Harsco Science Center, Discovery Labs, Select Mary Zimmerman, Rocky Ortenzio, The Medical Digital Cinema documentary Honorable LeRoy Zimmerman films, and possibly assistance with transportation costs, to assist with the cost for students and their chaperones who would otherwise be unable to benefit from Whitaker Center programs. This year’s Fund-A-Need raised $33,500! Très Bonne Année is a self-sustaining, nonprofit, charitable corporation which exists solely to raise funds for nonprofit organizations, and is one of the largest and most prestigious wine auctions for charity on the East Coast. Whitaker Center is honored to continue to be the exclusive beneficiary of proceeds from the Très Bonne Année events.

Corporate EITC Giving Continues to Provide Opportunities for Public School Students Whitaker Center is once again the grateful recipient of corporate contributors made through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program this past year. The objective of the EITC programs is to encourage corporations to support innovative educational efforts, either through scholarships or Educational Improvement Organizations, such as Whitaker Center. Due to the limited amount of public dollars set aside each year by the Commonwealth for corporate tax credits, the program is quite competitive. For more information about Pennsylvania’s EITC program, visit them online at www.newPa.com/EITC. Whitaker Center thanks the following corporations who contributed through EITC between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014: • American Sentinel Insurance Company • The Bryn Mawr Trust • Carlisle Carrier Corporation • Centric Bank • Fulton Bank • High Industries, Inc.

• M&T Bank • PPG Industries • Select Medical Corporation • Select Specialty Hospital Johnstown, Inc. • Susquehanna Bank • UGI Utilities, Inc.

Whitaker Center also acknowledges the following corporations who have already contributed through EITC in FY2015 through November 30, 2014:
