Happy 15th Anniversary to Us! As we prepare to celebrate our 15 year anniversary, we recognize that Whitaker Center has become known as the place to discover it all -- through a very broad range of programs in art and science. We have, however, one overarching goal to create special moments of learning and inspiration. We believe that we are most successful when we create opportunities for children and adults to share learning and inspiring experiences together across the generations. Many of our younger visitors are introduced to Whitaker Center with a group of classmates or friends. Exploring the engaging exhibits in Harsco Science Center and becoming totally immersed in a giant screen film in Select Medical IMAX Theater, however, can be a special and unforgettable experience with your family. Nonetheless, presenting cutting-edge programs and exhibits in art and science is very expensive. On a very practical level, maintaining a four-story facility with 130,000 square feet of floor space is also expensive. For these reasons, some members of the community may have questioned whether Whitaker Center could meet these challenges and prevail. Each year for the last 15 years, including the worst recession in modern history, we have faced our financial challenges with the same resolve that the founders expressed in their daring actions to create, fund and nurture this vital cultural center in the Capital City. To bolster that resolve, we have worked diligently to build the endowment to assure sustainability in the future. In addition, we have been challenged to secure more individual and corporate annual contributions so that there is less reliance on the endowment. After 15 years of success, it should be clear that Whitaker Center is here to stay! All of us associated with Whitaker Center are committed to the core values of learning, creativity, people, leadership and community service. These are the values that have guided our program decisions and the overall direction of the center for 15 years. We believe these values will serve us well in the future. With our eyes on the next major milestone, we have renewed our commitment to serve the community with extraordinary opportunities for learning and inspiration in art and science for the entire family.

The Bacon Brothers Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Thursday, July 10 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm Long before Kevin Bacon launched his prolific stage and screen career, and before Michael Bacon became known as an acclaimed film and television composer, they were just two brothers from Center City, Philadelphia. The Bacon Brothers’ 2009 release, New Year’s Day, is laden with their trademark gritty rock and a touch of Philly soul, and hearkens back to those roots in the City of Brotherly Love. While still encountering critics due to Kevin’s onscreen notoriety, the band continues to win believers – show by show, album by album. The New Yorker recently said, “Hollywood hangs like an albatross around the neck of any movie star turned musician, but this duo shakes off the burden of fame with sharply executed rock that has a blue-collar, rootsy edge.” With 2011 marking 16 years of the Bacon Brothers band’s existence, any cynical preconceptions about well-known actors “dabbling” in music now can safely be discarded. The duo’s latest album, Philadelphia Road — The Best of the Bacon Brothers (2011) is a collection of songs from the brothers’ first four studio CDs, as well as Guilty of the Crime, which was recorded with the Bellamy Brothers.

An Evening with Kenny G Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Thursday, August 7 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm In a recording career that spans almost three decades and 23 albums, Grammy® Award-winning saxophonist Kenny G has grafted elements of R&B, pop and Latin to a jazz foundation solidifying his reputation as the premiere artist in contemporary jazz. Since the early ‘80s, his combination of unparalleled instrumental chops and indelible melodies has resulted in sales of more than 75 million records worldwide (45 million in the U.S. alone), and more than a dozen climbs to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart. In 2008 Kenny G dipped into tropical territory with Paradise, which featured guest appearances by Brian McKnight and in 2008 Chanté Moore. In 2004 Kenny G released At Last...The Duets Album, which featured “duets” with LeAnn Rimes and Chaka Khan. Two years later, smooth jazz’s king of the soprano sax returned to a purely instrumental approach on the brassy, big-band-inspired albums Holiday Collection and I’m in the Mood for Love. In 2008, Kenny G released the Latin-inspired, Rhythm and Romance. The sax player next drifted toward R&B for 2010’s Heart and Soul, which featured guest vocals from Robin Thicke and Babyface.

The Mavericks Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Friday, August 8 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm Fusing traditional country with traditional rock & roll — the country-steeped garage band, which emerged in 1989, reunited in 2012 after an eight-year hiatus. Two decades have passed since their polyrhythmic brand of postmodern country gave the world: All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down, Here Comes The Rain, and Dance The Night Away. The Mavericks have captured the infectious energy and robust sound from their live shows on their new release, In Time. Songs including Dance In The Moonlight, Born To Be Blue, Back In Your Arms Again, and All Over Again — prove the Mavericks continue to created genre-defying soul music. The band’s music has most recently been featured in the movie Grudge Match. For lead singer Raul Malo; drummer Paul Deakin; multi-instrumentalist Robert Reynolds; longtime collaborator keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden; and seasoned guitarist Eddie Perez, life has become richer in a sense of their own musicality. It has also deepened the connection between the band, in a way that heightens the chemistry, which made the Grammy®-winning band — one of the most exciting live acts in any musical genre.

Indigo Girls Presented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Wednesday, August 13 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm On their 14th studio album, Grammy®winning folk-rock duo the Indigo Girls deliver a beautifully crafted batch of songs that revel in spirited simplicity. Beauty Queen Sister reveals a fierce longing for a more idyllic existence, while still celebrating the extraordinary in everyday living. Emily Sailers and Amy Ray began performing together in high school and later transferred their honest, urgent performing style onto the stages of countless small clubs. The duo’s public profile took shape with the 1989 release of their self-titled breakthrough album. The record’s hit track, Closer To Fine, earned the band the Best Contemporary Folk Recording at the 1990 Grammys. The duo’s constant touring, as well as staunch dedication to a number of social and environmental causes, has earned them a fervidly devoted following over the years. So many artists who launched their careers in the late ‘80s have slipped from our collective memory. In contrast, the Indigo Girls stand tall, having earned the lasting respect and devotion of a multi-generational audience, which continues to experience their creative evolution in the studio and on stage. Along with performing in the Broadway Jersey Boys, many of the members have also appeared in hit Broadway plays like Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, and Wicked.

Art on the Curved Wall Presented by

The Art & Science of Color Through August 22 Presented by Susquehanna Art Museum, The Art & Science of Color showcases each artist’s vast spectrum of color — whether it’s reflected, projected, or processed. This exhibit presents a distinct opportunity for individual perceptions.

Untitiled Kristoffer Bach Harbor #5 Eva Gorski

Often it is the essence of mood; a lens through which we understand the material world. As optical science continues to expand our understanding of color as a physical phenomenon, the potential for artists to utilize color as a tool for expression is boundless. We ask each artist to consider the subtle possibilities of color at the heart of a work of art, and the long-lasting sensory impressions left on the viewer.

Discovering the Next Generation of Young Artists August 29 – October 31, 2014 As part of its 15 Year Anniversary celebration, Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is celebrating the next generation of artists by holding a Youth Juried Art Show, Y Art. “Just like Whitaker Center’s other arts and science programs, the student artwork in the Y Imagine Orange Popsicle Art exhibition demonstrates Kiley Morrison remarkable talent and diversity. It’s Georgina Weaver a perfect fit for our 15th Anniversary,” said Steve Bishop, Whitaker Center Vice President and Science and IMAX Programs. Presented by students throughout the Mid-state, the orginal work will be honored at a reception to be held on Sunday, September 14 at 2pm, in conjunction with the 26th Annual Harrisburg Gallery Walk. 22

Enriching the Community through Philanthropy The Estate of Jeanne M. Swope Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. Swope were longtime residents of Harrisburg. Mrs. Swope worked for the Governor’s Office, while Mr. Swope was an attorney who worked most of his career in the Harrisburg area. During their many years together, the Swopes enjoyed contributing to the arts and various charities. Mrs. Swope passed away in April 2012. In her will, it was requested that a portion of Jeanne & Harold Swope her estate be distributed to charities. It’s no surprise that Mrs. Swope’s main focus in her estate plan was to continue to give back to the community, which she and Mr. Swope loved and supported wholeheartedly. The Co-Executors of the Estate selected charities in the Central Pennsylvania area, which reflected their combined values and beliefs. In December 2013, Whitaker Center was one of many local recipients of a generous bequest from the Estate of Jeanne M. Swope. Half of the bequest went towards Whitaker Center’s educational Discovery Labs which offer students in-depth, hands-on workshops during the school year and during summer Discovery Camps. The other half was put towards Whitaker Center’s Educational Outreach Fund which is used to assist with the cost of students and chaperons who would otherwise be unable to benefit from Whitaker Center programs. Mr. and Mrs. Swope’s commitment to the community, and their generosity and willingness to invest in Whitaker Center’s mission and vision, is greatly appreciated.
