hat is the very first thing you do in the morning? For most of us, our morning routine has changed over the last few years. Do we even use a traditional alarm clock, or do we depend on our cellphones to wake us up? If checking your social media is among the first things you do in the morning, it may be time for a reboot. We’re raising a generation of kids who may never know a world where this isn’t the case. Whether it’s a personal goal or a family goal, disconnecting may be the best way to reconnect with your spouse, your family, or just your inner voice. For some of us, stepping back from technology and back into the natural world will be an adjustment. Once you’ve talked to someone across a campfire rather than your network provider, you’ll see what
you’ve been missing. You can take your cell along on your wilderness excursion, of course, but this is an adventure, after all. Preparation is key when heading on an off-grid adventure. At some of the destinations, a technology blackout isn’t a choice, because there is no cell service.
1. Reeds Gap State Park | 1405 New
Lancaster Valley Road, Milroy, PA 17063 | Mifflin County | 717-667-3622 | dcnr.pa.gov/stateparks
Reeds Gap State Park is 220 acres of wilderness in the New Lancaster Valley of Mifflin County. Honey Creek, which flows through the park, is flanked by giant hemlocks and white pines. Spring is the perfect time to fish in Honey Creek, which
has some native and stocked trout. Hiking trails offer access to the creek. The Reeds Gap Spur Trail is a 9.4-mile loop trail that is considered a moderatelevel hike. Starting near the intersection of State Park Road and New Lancaster Road, the trek will take you along the scenic Reeds Gap Run to Knob Ridge Road. Expect the trail to be rocky and rugged at places. Tent-only camping is available at Reeds Gap at a 14-site campground, which is accessible from Campground Road off Reeds Gap Road. Though the campground allows tents only, it has some amenities, including water, restrooms, hot showers, a picnic area, and a playground. Bring Daisy because pets are permitted on all sites.
2. Tracy Ridge Recreation Area | Bradford, PA 16701 | 41°56’39.0”N, 78°52’34.0”W | McKean County | 814368-4158 | trails.dcnr.pa.gov
Located within the Allegheny National Forest, Tracy Ridge Campground is roughly 15 miles from Bradford and just minutes from the Allegheny Reservoir. This tent-only campground has more than 70 sites. Each contains a picnic table, a campfire ring, hand-pumped water, and vault toilets. The campsite sits atop a hill at an elevation of 2,245 feet. The 33.69-mile Tracy Ridge Trail System includes the 12-mile Bullis Hollow Trail. The single-track, non-motorized trail is recommended for hikers looking for a back-country experience that crosses two brook trout streams. Bullis Hollow Trail can be accessed from the campground and connects Marilla Springs Trail to the North Country Trail. The trek, which takes hikers through scenic Chestnut Ridge, is marked with white diamonds. The trail can be challenging, and hiking with a partner is recommended.

The 180-acre Hyner Run State Park
PA 16749 | McKean County | 814-465- and 6-acre Hyner View State Park are in the heart of Sproul State Forest. Camp9979 | majestictrails.com
Just 9 miles south from Tracy Ridge Campground on Route 46, Majestic Trails offers hours of fun for off-road enthusiasts. There are trails for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, three-wheelers, mountain bikes, hiking, and horseback riding. People of all experience levels, from novice to advanced, are welcome. From April to November, rustic campsites are available on a first-come, firstserved basis, except for holiday weekends, when reservations are accepted.

ing is available from mid-April until the end of the Pennsylvania deer season in December. Hyner Run State Park Campground has 30 wooded sites for tent or RV camping. The moderate to rugged Donut Hole Trail System winds its way through Hyner Run. While the entire trail is 50 miles, a smaller hike, the Long Fork Trail Loop, is just over 4 miles long. One of the most scenic overlooks in Pennsylvania is found in neighboring Hyner View State Park. Stunning views of the West Branch of Susquehanna River and surrounding mountains have made this vista a sought-after destination yearround. Hang gliding is popular in Hyner View. Glider pilots take flight from the overlook and soar over the mountains and river below, adding to the already picturesque view.

Runner particpating in the Hyner View Challenge
Every year the Hyner View Trail Challenge welcomes trail runners to challenge their bodies in the grueling 25K and 50K races. The 25K accepts 1,000 runners, and the 50K is open to the first 400. The April 18, 2020, trail challenge is already sold out. If you want to test your endurance, registration for the 2021 Challenge opens on Friday, May 1. The Hyner View Trail Challenge is not for the leisure runner or hiker. The 25K has three significant climbs and descents covering 4,000 feet of vertical elevation. The 50K tests runners with five major inclines with approximately 6,500 feet of vertical. One of the top runners in the world, Zach Miller, called the 25K “one of the ‘funnest’ courses in the world.” The course is designed to challenge people both physically and mentally.
5. Worlds End State Park | 82 Cabin Bridge Road, Forksville, PA 18616 | Sullivan County | 570-924-3287 | dcnr. pa.gov/stateparks Worlds End State Park, located in the valley of the Loyalsock Creek, is surrounded by more than 100,000 acres of the Loyalsock State Forest. The campground in Worlds End State Park is located just a mile from the park office along Route 154 in Forksville. Half of the 70 tent and trailer sites have electric hook-ups. The campsite also has rustic cabins, water, and shower houses. Adjacent to the campground, the Canyon Vista Trail will take you on a challenging journey to a destination well worth the effort. The Loyalsock Canyon Vista affords expansive views of the Endless Mountains at an elevation of 1,750 feet. The rocky

and, at times, steep 4-mile loop trail is marked with blue blazes. There are a total of 20 miles of trails within Worlds End State Park and more than 200 miles of trails in the Loyalsock State Forest. A swimming area in the Loyalsock Creek is located east of the campground, on Route 154. The cold mountain water is invigorating, especially during hot summer months. Swimming is only permitted from sunrise to sunset from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
outdoor shower, as well as a snack bar. For those who prefer staying on land, 5 miles of hiking trails and 18 miles of mountain biking trails offer hours of recreation. From April through October, the Yellow Creek State Park office offers a variety of environmental and recreational programs to help visitors understand and appreciate the park’s natural resources. The park’s McFeaters Cover Overnight Area has six camping cottages and four yurts available to reserve.

Yellow Creek State Park surrounds Yellow Creek Lake. The 720-acre lake is a popular destination for boaters and anglers. Pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards can be rented at Yellow Creek Rental and Supply. Swimming is permitted off the 800-foot beach. The beach features a changing house with an
A few miles away from McFeaters Cover Overnight Area, the Lannding Campground is an excellent destination for off-roaders, with plenty of trails for ATVs, OHVs, and dirt bikes. Primitive camping is available on-site for riders who can’t get enough of the mud pits, steep
climbs, rough terrain, and backwoods excitement.
8. Pinchot State Forest | 1841 Abington Road, North Abington Township, PA 18414 | Lackawanna County | 570945-7133 | dcnr.pa.gov/stateforests
Named for Gifford Pinchot, recognized as the Father of Conservation, Pinchot State Forest encompasses nearly 45,000 acres of forested land in the Poconos. The 26-mile Pinchot Trail offers short hikes and overnight backpacking to remote areas, like the Thornhurst Tract. Smaller trails within the Thornhurst Tract includes five shorter loop trails, including the Pine Hill Trail, which offers access to the Pine Hill Vista. From the Pine Hill Observation Deck, a sweeping 360-degree view of the Pocono Plateau is worth the journey. Three remote camp sites are available in the tract. Though there is no charge to use them, reservations are required.
When venturing into any of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests, always visit the park office to get information and find out the park regulations. And please practice Leave No Trace ethics. Find de-tails on leaving no trace at dcnr.pa.gov/Recreation/LeaveNoTrace. Most of the time, you’ll need to make a reservation or obtain a camping permit, so check out the destination website to see what is required. Maybe you’re not ready to go off-grid and need to take baby steps in your venture. If so, Pennsylvania has hundreds of family campgrounds and resorts that are not as remote and have great ame-nities. Not only are they budget-friendly, but they create tons of opportunities to engage in the lives of those we love. As for me, having a conversation around a campfire is still my favorite way to be so-cial. If you do take your cellphone along, use it to take photos of the beautiful wilds of Pennsylvania. But wait until you get home to post them to social media and tag us at #whereandwhenPA. e

“Play Ball!” That’s the cry most people think of when they imagine Williamsport. After all, thousands of Little Leaguers, along with their friends and families, converge on the Pennsylvania town each summer for the famous Little League World Series. And in addition to the tournament itself, the city is home to the year-round World of Little League Museum (littleleaguemuseum. org), which not only pays tribute to the sport but also shows how Little League has intertwined with history and become a model for youth sports and sports safety. Inside is a self-guided experience that follows the concept of a six-inning Little League game with a mix of authentic Little League heritage and immersive media. There’s also the minor league Williamsport Crosscutters (crosscutters.com), a Philadelphia Phillies affiliate that wel-
comes visitors to watch a game at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. However, while it’s certainly a mustsee for any visitor, baseball is by no means the only thing to enjoy in Williamsport. The northcentral Pennsylvania community has a rich history and plenty of activities for travelers of all ages. Of course, there’s no denying Williamsport’s history as a lumber mecca. The logging industry brought the town to its golden era and gave it status as one of Pennsylvania’s most important cities in the 19th century. Visitors can learn more about that era as well as others in Williamsport’s history at the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society (tabermuseum.org); among its exhibits is the LaRue Shempp Model Train display, with more than 2,000 pieces, 100 individual locomotives, and nearly 350 complete train sets in the collection. The museum also tells the full story of the log-

ging industry; the abundance of white pine, eastern hemlock, American chestnut, and oak in the hills surrounding Williamsport brought about a golden age in the region’s history and helped the town to receive the accolade of “Lumber Capital of the World.” The museum showcases the differences between the harsh life of the lumbermen of the day versus the grand scale of the lumber company owners. Today, visitors can take an old-fashioned trolley ride (ridetrolleys.com) along the Millionaire’s Row Historic District, showcasing the gorgeous Victorian residences of those lumber owners. The district received its name based on the fact that the community claimed more millionaires in the latter half of the 19th century than any other American city.

Speaking of trolleys, they are just one of many unique modes of transportation by which visitors can discover the charms of Williamsport. In the summer months, the Peter Herdic Transportation Museum (phtm.org) lets visitors explore the rich traditions of transportation in the Susquehanna Valley with exhibits highlighting the Susquehannock Indian Tribe’s birch bark canoe, a fully restored 1948 Pullman Railcar, a GMC 1962 bus, and more. Take to the water and travel the Susquehanna aboard the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat (ridehiawatha.com), known as the Queen of the Susquehanna, which offers river cruises six days a week, specialty cruises for people of all ages, and private charter rentals from May through October. You can also explore on your own by renting bicycles from the Williamsport & Lycoming County Visitors Bureau (vacationpa.com). If you have some extra time during your visit, be sure to take the kids to Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland (reptiland.com), located about 10 miles south of downtown Williamsport. Reptiland is unlike any other zoo; its resident exotic reptiles and amphibians from around the world live in naturalistic habitats, and visitors can meet some of the lesser-known members of
the animal kingdom. From mambas and vipers to giant alligators and Komodo dragons, the year-round attraction showcases something to appeal to a variety of interests. Don’t miss the animatronic “Dinosaurs Come to Life” adventure or Parakeet Landing, where guests of all ages may get up close and personal with hundreds of the brightly colored birds. As for where to stay, Williamsport is home to hotels and motels offering comfortable rooms and extra space for the entire family. As its name suggests, the City Hall Grand Hotel (cityhallgrandhotel.com) is a boutique hotel downtown, which dates to the 1800s. If you’re looking for something a little more secluded, check out some of the region’s inns. Serene View Farm (sereneviewfarm.com), a bed-and-breakfast, offers three private guest rooms and a gourmet breakfast in a Victorian farmhouse on more than 100 acres of peaceful countryside. And there are plenty of campgrounds, cabins, and even yurt rentals for every type of traveler. Williamsport’s history and charm make it a getaway destination for the entire family. Come for the baseball. Explore so much more. Visit vacationpa.com for more details or to plan your trip.

I’ve been writing and talking about the great experiences to be had in Pennsylvania for nearly 18 years. It never gets old, because I’m still discovering places in this state that I never knew existed. The PA Family Travel Fair was created to introduce you to destinations and attractions from all over the state. Of course, you can go online and search for things to do in Pennsylvania on websites like whereandwhen.com, but there’s something to be said for talking to someone face to face. You can ask the questions that perhaps aren’t covered on a website. We didn’t want this travel fair to be like every other expo, where window and door sales and crafts are pitching their products next to each other. The focus of the PA Family Travel Fair is
Pennsylvania travel. Our friendly exhibitors are eager to give you information about their destination and services with no pressure to buy anything. Most will have giveaways at their booth. Representatives from outdoor recreation destinations, historical sites, amusement parks, camping resorts, unique lodging sites, annual events, and museums will have all the information you need to plan your summer vacation or weekend getaway in Pennsylvania. Thanks to our Getaway Sponsor, Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, one lucky attendee will win a family getaway in the Endless Mountains valued at $2,000! Throughout the sevenhour event, we’ll be pulling door prizes in addition to all the giveaway drawings held at our exhibitor booths.

One thing we hear every year is that formation for grown-ups, kids enjoy all kids love this event as much as adults. the activities we have for them to do While there are tons of ideas and in- as well, and it’s all free! This year we’ll be changing our children’s scavenger hunt to a travel theme activity, where kids get passports stamped by exhibitors for a chance to win an All-Day Fun Pass to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash!

As you make your way along the winding roads of Chester County’s Brandywine Valley, you’ll have no difficulty in imagining why so many artists find inspiration in the landscape. There is nothing cookie-cutter about this area, so the lodging on this getaway will not be, either. The Inn at Whitewing Farm is a bed-and-breakfast nestled along a quiet country road in West Chester. After 30 years in the restaurant business, innkeepers Lance and Sandy Shortt began a new adventure when they purchased the 13-acre property that is now a luxury retreat. The inn offers 10 well-appointed guestrooms, which are separated from the main house, offering privacy and comfort for guests.
While the property is meticulously maintained inside and out, the Inn at Whitewing Farm exudes a friendly familyfeel. You’re likely to see daughter Samantha, who takes care of reservations and social media, and her children, Madison and Jagger, helping Pop-Pop with chores. While Samantha uses her marketing skills, Lance and Sandy bring their amazing culinary talents to breakfast every morning and the tasty treats available every afternoon. The inn features a Har-Tru clay tennis court that is available day or night, a relaxing pool and spa, and a stocked fishing pond.

A delicious breakfast welcomes guests at The Inn at Whitewing Farm
Longwood Gardens Since check-in is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., arrive in Chester County early and take the short trip to Longwood Gardens. The Inn at Whitewing Farm is located adjacent to Longwood Gardens, which began as the private garden of Pierre S. du Pont. The du Pont family members were known for their passion for gardening, and in 1907 Pierre du Pont laid out his first garden at what he called Longwood. Over the decades, the gardens grew and flourished and would eventually become a public garden due to the foresight of Pierre du Pont. From Jan. 18 to March 22, the Conservatory at Longwood is transformed into an orchid showplace during the annual Orchid Extravaganza. Be prepared to be dazzled and inspired as Longwood Gardens welcomes spring with nearly 1,100 acres of seasonal beauty. From March 28 through May 3, Spring Blooms takes over the gardens with more than 250,000 bulbs, flowering trees, and shrubs blossoming throughout the landscape. Longwood Gardens spectacular Festival of Fountains begins on May 7 and runs through Sept. 27. With summer Photo credit: The Inn at Whitewing Farm

Three generations of Wyeths learned 610-388-1000 and honed their craft here. The Brandywine River ______ Museum of Art features American art with an emphasis on the Brandywine Valley artists. Renowned for its Wyeth artists collection, the museum has galleries dedicated to the work of N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth. The Brandywine River Museum offers four extraordinary tours for those looking to delve deeper into the lives of the members of the Wyeth family. The museum provides a complimentary shuttle to the locations. This year, tours will occur daily from April 1 to Nov. 22 and will last approximately one hour. Children under age 6 cannot participate in the tours. N.C. Wyeth House & Studio Tour N.C. Wyeth House & Studio Tour provides an intimate look into the life and works of the artist.

When you visit the studio, it looks as if N.C. Wyeth (18821945) just went for a walk, and he’ll be back at any moment. Though the eldest Wyeth was known primarily as an illustrator, he was also a fine artist. N.C.’s use of props to fashion his paintings is on display in the studio, as well as space where he created large-scale murals commissioned by banks and other clients. Just a pleasant walk from the studio On the N.C. Wyeth Studio Tour visitors see an example of how the artist often used props when creating his paintings.
you’ll find the Wyeth House, where N.C. and his wife raised their children. While illustrators didn’t garner the same respect as fine artists, Wyeth’s children’s book and magazine illustrations afforded a good living for his family. It was the earnings from illustrating “Treasure Island” that allowed him to purchase the 18 acres of land for his home and studio. Andrew Wyeth Studio Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) was one of the 20th century’s best-known artists. He grew up watching his father paint, and he trained extensively as a young man. Andrew had a very different approach to his art. The little white 1875 schoolhouse that Andrew Wyeth called his studio for more than 60 years stands in stark contrast to his father’s studio. On the Andrew Wyeth StuWhile Andrew Wyeth was well-known dio Tour, you will pass by candid photos of to the people of Chadds Ford, he was very family and friends, including Henry Fonda private when in his studio, as the sign on and Errol Flynn. the entry door illustrates.

For a time, Andrew and his son, Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946), shared the studio. Before you enter Andrew’s space, you will pass by a small area that Jamie carved out for himself. Here you see preliminary drawings of John F. Kennedy alongside a replica of his final portrait. Jamie was just 20 years old when the Kennedy family commissioned him to paint a posthumous likeness of JFK. Andrew was known for using egg tempera in his paintings, which a very unforgiving medium, but one that has been used for centuries. The secondgeneration artist was partial to the extra-large, white eggs he purchased from the local Wawa for his egg tempera. The artifacts in Andrew’s studio show his methodology of making several sketches of his subject in preparation for painting. The Kuerner Farm The Kuerner Farm, where Andrew derived more than 70 years of inspiration, is available to tour. Visitors will see the 19th-century farm that was the subject of many of his paintings. On the docent-led tour, reproductions of Andrew’s well-known paintings will be on display, allowing guests to compare them to the actual sites he painted.

portunity to take another stroll through the property or take in a game of tennis before checking out. Baldwin’s Book Barn Just one mile south of West Chester, you’ll find Baldwin’s Book Barn. The 1822 dairy barn is just the type of structure you would expect to see in the Brandywine Valley. Inside, though, the barn is anything but typical. More than 300,000 books of all genres line the shelves, nooks, and tables inside Baldwin’s Book Barn. From beach reads and how-to books to classic literature and rare volumes, this is not your average books store. In case the exposed stone walls aren’t enough of an inkling that you are in a barn, low-hanging beams and narrow stairs will serve as another reminder. Whether you are an avid reader or not, Baldwin’s Book Barn is a must-see in Chester County. It is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. St. Peters Village Approximately 25 miles north of West Chester is another one of those otherworldly places that make the Brandywine Valley a bucket list destination. St. Peters Village is a lovely hamlet that runs along the picturesque French Creek in northeastern Chester County. The 19th-century company town has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003. Along the quarter-mile stretch of St. Peters Road, the village shops include Saint Peter’s Bakery, which recently garnered the distinction of The Best Little Bakeshop in America. In addition to tasty baked treats, you can also grab breakfast or lunch. A vintage arcade, a hand-blown glass shop, a winery, and other unique shops will make this excursion well worth the drive. The Inn at St. Peter’s is a luxurious bed-and-breakfast with breathtaking views of French Creek. The inn’s restaurant serves Italian cuisine on three outdoor patios overlooking the flowing water and large rocks for which French Creek is known. Hiking is also very popular in the area, with many interconnecting trails allowing you to take a different route each time you visit.
