It’s the most wonderful time of the year. That is if you’re looking for summer vacation ideas. The PA Family Travel Fair is back and better than ever! The 5th annual event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be held on Saturday, April 15, at the Calvary Church campus in Lancaster. The free travel fair is designed to bring Pennsylvania destinations and attractions together in one location so you can plan your vacation in PA. The event has something for everyone and won’t cost a dime. There are no sales pitches or pressure, just a fun day with children’s activities, giveaways, great entertainment, and tons of ideas for your next getaway. Speaking of getaways, one lucky attendee will win an Endless Mountains Getaway in northeastern Pennsylvania worth up to $2,000 thanks to our Getaway sponsor, Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau!

SHOWS

Papa Tater will provide magic and chuckles when he performs at our noon show. Can’t make it at noon? Stop by Papa Tater’s booth; he’ll be there all day. For the first time since 2019, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will be back with an “Animals of the Rainforest” show at 2 p.m. Learn about the rainforest and the animals that live under the canopy. When not doing the show, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland zoologists will be at their booth so you can get close to these incredible creatures. Both shows will take place on the café stage; just follow the signs.

EXHIBITORS

Our exhibitors come from all areas of Pennsylvania and offer history, outdoor recreation, amusement parks, caverns, museums, events, and fun family attractions. REGION

The counties that lie along Pennsylvania’s northern border, connected by historic Route 6, feature beautiful scenery, parks, and lakes that make the destination a wonderland of natural beauty. Home to a wide variety of recreational sites, natural resources, and quaint small towns, each of the counties along the state’s northern border are destinations to slow down, unwind, and appreciate a more mindful way to enjoy life. As more temperate breezes begin to warm the northern tier, spring is the perfect time to discover the wonderful treasures of Warren County.

Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor recreation is a major draw to this part of the Pennsylvania Wilds for visitors looking to pursue pastimes like hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and leisurely activities like bird watching. Major recreational areas like the western side of the 550,000-acre Allegheny National

Forest, as well as the beautiful waters of Kinzua Dam & Allegheny Reservoir, combined with state parks, game lands, and local parks, make Warren County a perfect place to shake off the winter blues. Outfitters across the region are standing by to assist visitors with getting the gear they need to have an incredible adventure exploring the trails, in the natural areas, and on the waterways of Warren County.

Incredible scenery is on display across the county. Still, those looking to take in some of the best will want to visit three overlooks that offer breathtaking views of Warren County’s spectacular topography. Be sure to bring a camera or sketchbook when you stop by Rimrock Overlook and ascend steps leading to the large natural stone formation offering a panoramic view of the Allegheny Reservoir. The Tidioute Overlook presents a bird’s-eye view of islands on the Allegheny River, the farm-

lands of the river valleys, and lush forests. A second viewing spot offers a great vantage point to view historic Tidioute. The third overlook visitors will want to explore is Jakes Rocks Overlook, which sits atop a cliff providing an incredible view of the Allegheny Reservoir.

Town of Historic Proportions

Discovering Warren’s history and experiencing the nostalgic charm of the small towns across the county make for great ways to enjoy a visit. The National Historic District in the city of Warren is rich with opulent homes and buildings that share the story of the region’s oil barons and entrepreneurs whose legacy is reflected in these structures. Visitors can discover the history of Warren, from its establishment in the late 18th century as a center to move lumber to a growing nation to the 19th-century discovery of oil that made it one of the richest sources of materials needed to fuel the country’s Industrial Revolution.

The home of America’s most famous Civil War battlefield offers all the history you can take in, plus experiences for those seeking outdoor adventure, relaxing getaways, or a fun night out with friends and family. When you visit Gettysburg in the springtime, you will discover a historic town with fresh inspiration everywhere you look. From shops to restaurants, visitors should expect the unexpected.

It’s no secret that most people who visit Gettysburg are attracted to its history.

The battlefield, with its monuments and markers, tells the story of the first three days in July 1863 when the town of Gettysburg became ground zero during the Civil War. Exploring museums, like the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and the Seminary Ridge Museum, before visiting the battlefield helps to set the stage for a more meaningful and educational tour. Whether you tour the battlefield on your own or take one of the guided tours available, visiting one of the many museums in Gettysburg will enhance your experience. Two new museums are set to open this spring, Gettysburg Beyond the Battle, is scheduled to open on Saturday, April 15, 2023. The Adams County Historical Society created the new history center to tell the civilian story of those who lived through the horrors of the battle, as well as the broader history of the county. Visit www.achs-pa. org for exhibit information.

Photo by NPS The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center is a joint effort of the National Park Service and the Gettysburg Foundation.

The second museum to open in spring is the Gettysburg Mercantile Museum. The 1800s general store/museum does not have an official opening date but is scheduled to be open seven days a week. For information regarding the upcoming opening of the Merchantile Museum, log on to https://destinationgettysburg.com/members/gettysburgmercantile-museum.

There are so many history-driven businesses in Gettysburg. One of my favorites is the Shriver House Museum – The Civilian Experience. Here visitors learn about the Shriver family and what they endured as their attic was turned into a confederate sharpshooter’s nest and the cellar into a hospital. Learn more about the museum at www.shriverhouse. org.

Another of my favorites is Civil War Tails at the Homestead Diorama Museum. This unique museum tells the story of the battle with a twist; all the soldiers and civilians in the diorama are cats made from

modeling clay. This kid-friendly museum allows children to view the battlefield at eye level. Although the cats bring a whimsical feel to the exhibits, everything from the uniforms and weapons to the scale and battle positions is historically accurate. To get a sneak peek at the diorama visit https://civilwartails.com.

You can work up quite an appetite while touring Gettysburg. Fortunately, there is no shortage of eateries in the area.

Mela Kitchen at Jack’s Cider House is an excellent way to start your Gettysburg culinary experience. Here you will enjoy creative dishes made from fresh local ingredients and the crisp flavors of Jack’s Cider House hard ciders. The hills of Adams County make a picturesque landscape and create ideal growing conditions for the fruit orchards that blanket the countryside. Mela Kitchen makes the most of the abundance of fresh produce in the area.

Photo by Destination Gettysburg The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival is held twice a year in May and August at Granite Hill Campground.

With a scheduled opening in early spring, SavorHood Gettysburg will bring food hall-style dining to Baltimore Street. The 10 eateries that make up SavorHood will feature everything from barbecue and wood-fired pizza to ice cream and Mexican street food. Picky eaters are welcome at SavorHood because everyone in your party will find something they like.

In addition, Gettysburg is the home of historic taverns and farm-to-table, casual, and fine-dining restaurants; find them all at https://destinationgettysburg. com/places-to-eat.

Want to plan your visit around an upcoming event? Here are a few to consider.

April 14-15, History Meets the Arts

will return to the Gettysburg Fire Company Community Room, where visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists who will be presenting their latest works. Original paintings, signed prints, folk art, knives, powder horns, pottery, and more will be available to purchase. For more information, visit https://historymeetsthearts.com.

May 18-21, The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival is back at Granite Hill Campground in Gettysburg. Once again, top bluegrass artists will provide foot-stomping music that the entire family will love. Visit www.gettysburgbluegrass.com/

may-festival for details.

May 29, Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will honor those who lost their lives in the service of our country. Visit www.facebook. com/GettysburgMemorialDay for details.

Two new reenactments are being planned for June, as well as the 160th anniversary Battle of Gettysburg Reenactment on June 30 through July 2 on the grounds of the historic Daniel Lady Farm. www.gbpa.org.

Another anniversary will take place on October 13-15. An event celebrating the 30th anniversary of the film “Gettysburg” will feature actors signing autographs, a barbecue, and special VIP packages for those who want to get the full “Gettysburg” experience. The Majestic Theater will host the event. www.gettysburgmajestic.org

As I write this article, it is late January, and the town of Gettysburg is still decked in its Christmas finery. Why? Because the modern-day Hallmarkesque movie, “A Gettysburg Christmas” is being filmed throughout the town. Hollywood actors Bruce Boxleitner and Lee Majors are a couple of the faces you may recognize in the film scheduled for release before Christmas 2023.

Even if you visited Gettysburg in the past, you’ll find new shops, restaurants, museums, and events when you visit in 2023. For accommodation information, visit https://destinationgettysburg.com.

Photo by Destination Gettysburg History Meets Arts is a twoday celebration of the artistic take on history. Visitors have the opportunity to meet dozens of artists and view their pieces.

To say that Benjamin Franklin left his mark on America is an understatement. For Philadelphia specifically, he was and is the lifeblood of the city. His footprint is everywhere. Let’s explore a few places and institutions impacted by Franklin.

Fireman ' s Hall Museum

Benjamin Franklin is credited with forming the Union Fire Company on Dec. 17, 1736,

in Philadelphia.

Fireman’s Hall Museum is located in a restored firehouse in Philly’s historic Old City district. The museum’s mission is to preserve Philadelphia’s firefighting history. www.firemanshallmuseum.org

Benjamin Franklin Museum

The entire museum is dedicated to Franklin’s legacy and contributions to society. From his personal life to his public persona, including his roles from scientist to statesman, the museum explores the life of the outspoken Founding Father.

www.nps.gov/inde/planyourvisit/ benjaminfranklinmuseum.htm

Top: Benjamin Franklin Museum photo by R. Kennedy for GPTMC Left: Photo by R. Kennedy for VISIT PHILADLEPHIA®

Independence Hall

What an honor it is to visit the place of our nation’s founding. Independence Hall is where our Founding Fathers defied the King of England and formed an independent nation.

www.nps.gov/inde

Carpenters ’ Hall

Carpenters’ Hall was the site of the First Continental Congress (1774), where ideals and ideas were spoken with the then-moniker of traitor hanging over the heads of those in attendance. The beautiful structure was also home to Franklin’s Library Company, the American Philosophical Society, and the First and Second Banks of the United States. www.carpentershall.org

Christ Church

Constructed between 1727 and 1744, Christ Church was the place of worship for many famous revolutionaries. Among the congregation were the likes of William Penn, George Washington, Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross. Ben Franklin raised money for the tower and steeple, both of which were added in 1754. www.christchurchphila.org

Christ Church Burial Ground

Visit the cemetery where citizens were laid to rest with historic figures like Ben Franklin and medical pioneer Dr. Benjamin Rush. Not surprisingly, Franklin’s grave is the most visited in the cemetery. www.christchurchphila.org/aboutthe-burial-grounds

The National Constitution Center

The National Constitution Center uses high-tech displays, exhibits, priceless artifacts and video to provide information about the U.S. Constitution. Visitors can view one of the rare original public copies of the Constitution as well as an original copy of the Bill of Rights. Signers’ Hall features life-size bronze statues of the Constitution’s signers and those who chose not to sign. www.constitutioncenter.org

The Franklin Institute

The Franklin Institute opened in 1824 to honor the inventiveness of Ben Franklin. It was moved from its original home in

Independence Hall in 1934. The hands-on science museum is a favorite of adults and children. www.fi.edu

Franklin Square

Franklin Square is one of the city’s five original public squares laid out by William Penn. Originally named North East Publick Square, the site was renamed to honor Ben Franklin in 1825. Though the area has been used for many different purposes over the years, including a military parade ground and cattle pasture, today the square is a place for families to gather. historicphiladelphia.org/franklin-square/ what-to-see

These are just a few destinations with a Franklin connection. His contributions far exceed those covered in this article. For more information on Franklin’s Philly, log on to www.visitphilly.com.

Biographer Carl Van Doren wrote, “No other town burying its great man, ever buried more of itself than Philadelphia with Franklin.”

Westsylvania Jazz & Blues Festival Takes

Center Stage Memorial Day Weekend

It’s rare to find a line-up of world-class entertainment in one place. And, even rarer to be able to enjoy this talent for free. That’s what the Delaney Chevrolet Westsylvania Jazz & Blues Festival offers jazz enthusiasts each year.

The 2023 event will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 27 and 28, in IRMC Park and various locations in downtown Indiana, PA.

Hugo Cruz and the Caminos are the headliners for this year’s festival. Other artists, including the Gentleman Brawl-

ers, Jazz with Dr. Mike, and Lily Carone, are among the many talented performers set to take the stage at the Westsylvania Jazz & Blues Festival.

More details about the festival are available at westsylvaniajazzandblues.org, and overnight accommodation information can be found at visitindianacountypa.org.
