You probably noticed something different about the cover. Yes, we have a new logo. After 20 years of the same logo, we thought it we were long overdue for a fresh, new look. What better place to reveal it than in our spring issue? I like to think of season as a time of renewal. So, we refreshed our look and did a bit of spring cleaning. Don’t worry, we won’t change our signature size. We’ve heard you loud and clear: “Don’t mess with the size!” The magazine still promotes hundreds of events from all over Pennsylvania. And we still bring you interesting features and ideas for getaways and vacations in the state. Our advertisers are great – some are new and some have been with us for decades. Check out what they have to offer. You might be pleasantly surprised at how affordable it is to vacation in Pennsylvania. Our mission hasn’t changed – we’ve been doing it for 54 years and we’re still dedicated to sharing all the amazing destinations and things to do in Pennsylvania – even (and sometimes especially) those more obscure, quirky events that don’t have big marketing budgets. That’s why we created the PA Family Travel Fair in 2018. We brought destinations and attractions together in one place so attendees could explore the different vacation offerings that are available within a comfortable drive. There were fun activities for kids, shows and great drawings throughout the day. And it was all FREE. The turnout was amazing and the day was fun, so we’re doing it again on April 27. What is the PAFTF? As we prepared for last year’s inaugural PA Family Travel Fair, we weren’t sure what to expect. We just felt that if we built it, they would come. So, we designed a free travel expo that would offer the entire family a fun and informative day showcasing some of Pennsylvania’s great destinations. And they came - approximately 700 families joined us for the one-day event. On Saturday, April 27, the PA Family Travel Fair (PAFTF) will again welcome attendees to visit with exhibitors representing attractions and destinations from all over Pennsylvania. At each booth, friendly and knowledgeable representatives will share information about their destination. Fairgoers will be able to sign up to win great prizes and getaways at each booth. Among our exhibitors you’ll find amazing outdoors destinations, historic sites, family fun attractions, campgrounds and unique lodging.

N
estled along the banks of the Allegheny River and accessible by traversing across a series of hills and valleys, the tucked-away community of Foxburg in Clarion County welcomes guests to relax, enjoy the small-town way of life and truly get away from it all. How the town came to be the quiet river community it is today is quite a story. Foxburg’s roots trace all the way back to Pennsylvania founder William Penn and the Fox family of Philadelphia, which purchased several parcels of land in western Pennsylvania along the Allegheny River. One of those land parcels is the Foxburg of today. In the mid-1800s, the discovery of
oil in western Pennsylvania led the town to grow, as it was located directly along one of the major transportation routes for oil well supplies. It was officially founded as a town in 1870 at the height of “Black Gold Fever” as additional oil refineries were built in the area and rail lines expanded, including the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. Throughout it all, the Fox family spent its summers in the bucolic town, preferring it to the bustle of Philadelphia. Although the town’s prosperity eventually declined along with the local rail industry, the Fox mansion, now known as RiverStone Farm, still stands today. That mansion was purchased by Dr. Arthur Steffee and his wife in the

late 90s, who set a goal of continuing the Fox family’s vision, restoring not only the home and grounds, but the community as well. The Steffees envisioned a resort-like community, with culture, charm and a sense of getting away from it all. The Foxburg of today realizes their vision.

At the center of it all is the Foxburg Inn (www.foxburginn.com) – a 24room boutique hotel that feels almost like a B&B and is located right along the water’s edge. Guests awake each morning to the sound of the river current, and the inn’s location has made it popular with local weddings and events. There’s a charming, nostalgic feel about the hotel. Rooms are spacious, with large windows to look out over the river below. Don’t expect lots of electrical outlets or areas for all your technology. You won’t need it here, and The RiverStone Estate consists of 26 buildings on 1,200 acres of riverfront property. Shown: RiverStone Farm.

it’s not why you came. In Foxburg, it’s all about unplugging for a weekend, so embrace the nostalgic charm and leave the devices at home. What’s more, once arriving in Foxburg, everything is within steps of each other. The town is only about a block long, with the Foxburg Inn right at the center. Park the car and just wander along Main Street. Enjoy the river view, rent a canoe or kayak for a trip out on the water or take a stroll along the water on the rail trail. There are even Segway tours to do a little more exploring. Most diners choose the chateaulike Allegheny Grille (www.alleghenygrille.com) for at least one meal. The waterfront restaurant, complete with vaulted wooden ceilings, a large
patio and windows that give a panoramic view of the river, is the go-to spot in town, with classic American dishes, a full bar and plenty of opportunities for small groups to gather. Couples can enjoy a quiet evening by the windows or in front of the large fireplace for a cozy dinner. Another option is the friendly Foxburg Pizza (www.gofoxburg.com/ project/foxburg-pizza/), which, in addition to serving traditional pizzas and sandwiches, is known in town as the home for traditional diner-style breakfasts. Located just next door to the Foxburg Inn, Foxburg Pizza provides a hearty start to the day for just a few dollars. Check out the breakfast pizza for a unique combination of the restaurant’s two specialties.

At the center of town, directly across from the inn, you can’t help but notice a large stone structure. This is Lincoln Hall, originally the western Pennsylvania headquarters of the Fox family and now home of the Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts (ARCA) (www.alleghenyriverstone. org), dedicated to providing a variety of arts and education programs for the region. With the public library on the first floor, upstairs provides an historic performance hall that looks almost exactly as it did more than 100 years ago. At the center of it all is the crown jewel – a 1929 Wurlitzer Theater Organ, known as the “Mighty Wurlitzer,” one of only 24 ever built in this style and size. ARCA presents several concerts throughout the year featuring nationally acclaimed organists to showcase its resident piece of history. Next door is the Red Brick Gallery and Gift Shop, a boutique fine art gallery and gift shop that is also a part of ARCA. The charming brick building once held the business offices of the Fox family and was recently restored to its current state as an artists’ collective. The 13 member artists,
whose work ranges from pottery and woodwork to watercolors, oils and more, volunteer hours in the shop in exchange for having their work displayed. The pieces here provide wonderful memories of a visit to this community. And, of course, a romantic weekend just isn’t complete without a little chocolate and wine, and downtown Foxburg delivers. Stop by the locally owned Divani Chocolatier (www. divanichocolate.com) in the historic Foxburg Bank building. Here, owners Vab and Melissa Bawa create all-natural Belgian chocolate confections on-site, ranging from a variety of chocolate barks and caramels to truffled creams and other custom creations. The duo came to Pennsylvania in 2007 in search of the ideal location to open their dream shop selling fine European-style chocolates. They found that location in Foxburg and opened the downtown shop in 2011. Just a few doors down, Foxburg Wine Cellars (www.foxburgwine. com) has been serving guests for 15 years. The winery sources its grapes from the Lake Erie region and makes all its more than two dozen varieties

Golfers may want to take an afternoon to head outside the charming downtown area of Foxburg to experience a bit of golfing history at the Foxburg Country Club, founded in 1887 by a descendant of the Fox family. Today, the nine-hole course, which is open to the public, is known as “the longest in-continuous-use golf course
in the United States” and is known for its historic “hickory golf” events using hickory wood clubs and other tools from the past. The course’s club house hosts the American Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, which houses an extensive collection of rare and valuable golf clubs and artifacts from many different eras of the game. Tiny in size but rich in experience, Foxburg is a quaint place to truly escape for the weekend as a couple. It was a sunny, late-summer day when I met David Abel at his property in Elizabethtown. I’d been anticipating finally seeing the iconic Star Barn that now stood majestically on the grounds of Stone Gables Estate. I expected to learn about the meticulous process that went into dismantling, relocating and reassembling the structure that I had seen so many times as I traveled along Route 283 in Dauphin County. I knew that I was going to be awestruck at the craftsmanship that went into restoring it to its original grandeur. It was

as I expected, and so much more. What you see on the property is just part of the story. It’s the purpose behind it all that impacted me the most. Mor e Than Just an Icon ic Building The Gothic Revival Star Barn was built in 1877 and was the centerpiece of a complex of smaller buildings on the 164-acre John Motter farm. The louvered fivepointed stars used for ventilation, which
have given the structure its name, also made it one of the most photographed barns in the country. But it wasn’t until it caught the attention of Tierney Abel, David’s wife, that the rundown structure was given a new lease on life. “We were driving along Route 283 when my wife said, ‘Sweetheart, we should save the Star Barn,’” David recalled. He was hesitant at first, but the rest is history. It took two years for a team of experts and craftsmen to bring the beauty back. While the exterior of the Star Barn captures spectators’ attention, the interior is a masterpiece of painstaking devotion. The first thing I noticed when I stepped inside were the 65-foot-long white oak beams that bear the weight of the barn. These massive summer beams are original to the barn, as is 85 percent of the wood. Timber that could not be saved was replaced
with wood from period-correct barns purchased by the Abels. The task of keeping the building authentic and making it ADA compliant was quite the undertaking, but now the structure features handicapped-accessible bathrooms and an elevator to reach the second floor. The first-floor tack room – David credits Tierney as its decorator – has a masculine, refined Western feel. Also, on the first floor, Tierney transformed the Milking Parlor into a beautiful bridal suite complete with a stone fireplace. The original hay barn was relocated and attached to the main barn so that all ADA requirements were met for both barns. The “addition” houses a groom’s quarters and the Star Barn museum, which showcases a replica of the Star Barn complex and antique farming tools and implements.
Back inside, the Grand Staircase leads to the main floor, which features an inside view of the star louvers and the massive 24,000-pound center cupola. Events With a Purpose While the tour far exceeded my expectations, it was our sit-down conversation afterward that moved me beyond dates, specs and architecture. The vision, mission and purpose behind all of the endeavors at Stone Gables is to preserve the rich history of the area, while making a difference in the lives of at-risk children. When explaining his mission, David explained, “I believe we’re just stewards of this property. God has preserved them for such a time as this.”
When David purchased the Stone Gables Estate in 1986, it was a place where he could foresee raising his growing family. Today, the Stone Gables Estate has ex-panded to 275 acres, which includes the Iron Stone Ranch - a working horse farm, Star Barn Village and the Belmont site (un-der construction). One hundred percent of the net profits raised through events and services provided at the property go to a cause near and dear to David’s heart: Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping at-risk children

More than 770 children have been given the gift of a forever home and family through Brittany’s Hope. The organization was founded 1999 after David’s first adopted daughter, Brittany, died in a tragic car accident. It was her life that inspired the Abels to found Brittany’s Hope. As Brittany matured into a young woman, her passion for helping abandoned children became more and more evident. Her words helped shape the mission statement for the organization: “I dream of a world where all children know peace and love only a family can provide.” -Brittany Over the years, 14 children have become part of the Abel family through adoption. Some of the Abel children have gone on to adopt. Like any proud father, David beamed as he shared, “They’ve experienced the beauty of the gift, and they want to share that.”

Santa Jr., in the fall, he said, “When I spoke to him (David Abel), I knew this was where (the collection) belonged.” The Barns at Belmont This three-year project is already underway and will bring to life the four-anda-half-story 1867 Belmont Barn. The barn was slated for demolition to make way for a shopping center along Fruitville Pike in Lancaster when the Abels purchased it. The Belmont site at Stone Gables will eventually house the Leviathan 4-4-0 Steam Engine and the only reproduction of the original Lincoln Funeral Car. The Belmont Barn will be able to seat more than 500 guests for weddings and corporate events.
Projects in Process The National Christmas Center Just days after my visit, David announced that he purchased The National Christmas Center. After it closed in 2017, owner Jim Morrison was hoping to find a buyer for the extensive Christmas collection. I can’t imagine a better outcome for The National Christmas Center than to

was pulling the funeral car of Abraham Lincoln from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Ill. A half mile of that original 1832 rail-road bed is still on the property. The 4-4-0 Leviathan Steam Locomotive and Lincoln Funeral Car are both fullscale replicas of the originals used to transport President Lincoln to his final resting place. The Lincoln Funeral Car is more than 50 feet long and is complete with period-correct furnishings and a casket donated by the original manufacturer who made Lincoln’s. A reenactment of the Lincoln Funeral Train is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 22 and 23, 2019.

Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge double-arch The double-span, cov-ered bridge, which extended across the Pequea Creek since 1844, was in desper-ate need of restoration when it was pur-chased for $1 and moved to Stone Ga-bles. The restoration will be completed in two parts. The first section will be rebuilt to its original glory for vehicle and horse and carriage traffic crossing a creek on the property. That should be completed by Saturday, March 30, 2019. The second part is scheduled to be completed in 2022 and will span another portion of the creek to allow the Steam Locomotive and pas-senger cars to cross the creek. Exploring the Many Facets of
Jim Thorpe By Cara O’Donnell
With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Originally known as Mauch Chunk, Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views and charm. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, and today those
Victorian structures house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With nostalgic charm coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s charm, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal

mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. That focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19thcentury entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the
firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. But Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even further and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can experience a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion (www.asapackermansion.com), a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day of the 17-room Italianate villa. Visitors can also experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer with a stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn (www.murdermansion.com), just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tasting or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” By the middle of the 20th century, Mauch Chunk had fallen on hard economic times. In the 1950s, the town was

Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. The railroading history, the Packers’ story and the eccentric tale of the name change of Jim Thorpe aren’t where the historical stories end, however. Don’t miss the Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe (www.theoldjailmuseum.com), considered the central location for the story of the Molly Maguires. Here, visitors can tour the jail and hanging site of the seven accused coal miners known as the Mollies in the 1870s, complete reconstructed gallows and the mysterious, enduring handprint of a prisoner who proclaimed his innocence. Even just a stroll through downtown from one of Jim Thorpe’s quaint B&Bs or historic inns evokes nostalgic charm. Pass by Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, to find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress shoppe, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart).

approached by the widow of Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe, looking for a place to honor her late husband and his sports achievements. (His home state of Oklahoma had refused to erect a memorial in his honor.) She and town officials struck a deal, and the athlete’s remains were moved to Mauch Chunk, which was then renamed Jim Thorpe. Each year, the town has a two-day event to honor the athlete who excelled in track and field, football and baseball. Interestingly, Thorpe himself never visited the town, but reports say he did start his athletic career at an industrial school about 100 miles away. Today, visitors have plenty of opportunities to learn more about the Packers, the railroading history and the unique stories of Jim Thorpe. Take a self-guided walking
Dining is just as varied. While shopping downtown, stop by Café Arielle at the Stabin Museum, a destination restaurant housed in an old wireworks factory and silk mill, complete with an underground stream and outdoor garden patio. The popular Broadway Grill & Pub is a favorite for locals and visitors, and Stella’s Secret Speakeasy above Tony Stella’s Encore restaurant is the perfect place for an evening cocktail – just make sure you know the password. Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9-mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle
