a-maz-ing darling And a Happy New Year to you! Too many mince pies? Laugh them off with the talented six-piece comedy/music act, The Horne Section. This wacky bunch has a unique knack of making everyday occurrences absolutely hilarious (page 20). It’s time to feel fabulous! Fitness shouldn’t be a chore, so check out my ideas for ways to tone up whilst smiling doing so (page 40). If your New Year’s resolution is to schedule in more ‘me time’, then you’ll want to read our guide to wellness (page 50). For full-on flavour, Jiusi (Josie) Zhang shares her favourite local eateries that offer a traditional taste of east Asia (page 62). And, you must try Katie Davies' recipe for crempogau, the Welsh (better!) alternative to pancakes (page 71). 

assail, pronounced ‘was hal’, is an ancient tradition to promote good apple harvest the following autumn. To kick off the festival, shots will be fired into the top branches of the apple trees to scare away any evil spirits in the orchard. Enjoy live music and entertainment from Swansea’s very own Morris Dancers, Men of Sweyn's Ey. Don your costume and grab some pots, pans, and drums - it’s time to make some noise in the Wassail Parade to wake up the sleeping trees in the orchard. 

investing in your education

If anyone in your family is leaving school in 2019 and is wondering what to do next, then head to one of the open evenings at Gower College Swansea this January.

open evenings A Levels, vocational courses and apprenticeships Mon 14 January | 5.30pm-7.30pm Gorseinon Campus

Vocational courses and apprenticeships Mon 21 January | 5.30pm-7.30pm Tycoch Campus

O

ur open evenings are a chance to find out more about our courses, chat with teaching and support staff and have a look around our facilities - including a new £2m coffee shop at Gorseinon and a brand new state-of-the-art library at Tycoch. Gower College Swansea offers almost 40 A Level subjects (many of which are not offered at GCSE) and 40 vocational subject choices, so, whatever your interest, we will have a suitable course for you. Our A Level programme is varied and includes subjects as diverse as classical civilisation, computer science and government and politics. In 2018, our A Level results significantly outperformed the Welsh national average by 7% at A*-C grades (our overall pass rate was 98%). We also offer an Oxbridge Preparation Programme which provides the best possible preparation for acceptance to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities. If you prefer the coursework elements of GCSEs rather than exams, then a vocational course such as BTEC

would be a good choice for you. There are many levels to each course so you can slot into the one that best matches your qualifications. In 2018, we celebrated an overall 99% pass rate at Level 3 (17% at Highest Triple Distinction). Want to earn as you learn? Apprenticeships are a great way to earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. We currently offer apprenticeship pathways in areas including business, hairdressing, health and social care and engineering. Our progression rates of students heading to university are impressive. In 2018, over 1,000 students progressed to university, and, of these, 200 were accepted at some of the best universities in the UK, including Oxbridge, Edinburgh, Bristol, Exeter and the London School of Economics. So why not join us at one of our open evenings to find out more? 

you must be joking

The Horne Section, a six-piece comedy/music act, will make you chuckle at the oddest of things. Holly Hughes chatted with lead creative Alex Horne to try and fathom out how they make the ordinary so extraordinary.

Q

How did the combination of stand-up and live music first come about? I grew up and went to primary school with the trumpeter and drummer. I had no musical talent and went off and became a comic. They were quite funny but went off to become jazz musicians. We hooked up again when we were all about 30 and thought that combining forces might be a laugh. Ten years later and we're still going.

Q

Tell me about the band members Joe Auckland (trumpet and banjo) and Ben Reynolds (drums) are my oldest friends. Our mums are best friends too and are, essentially, our groupies. We are that cool. Will Collier (bass) and Mark Brown (trumpet) came next. They are polar opposites and excellent fun. The pianist (Ed) is temporary. Well, he's been with the band for eight years

but I'd like to keep my options open. He's ok with this, I think.

Q

You’re a Countdown champion - any tips for creating nine-letter words? Unfortunately, all I can say is practise, practise, practise. When I knew I was going on the show I bought the board game and bored all my friends for months. I got really good. Now I'm useless again.

Q

How would you describe your humour? It's silly, semi-improvised and stylish. At least one of those, anyway.

“WE COVER MANY TOPICS SUCH AS RADIATORS, HOOVERS, LOVE, THE PLAGUE, IT'S A MIXED BAG”

Q

Q

You then returned to the show in 2013, but this time as a guest in dictionary corner for 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown - any standout moments? Many. But just sitting next to Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner will always be a career highlight. Are you chief lyric writer or is it a combined effort? I like to think I'm the chief lyric writer but that's because I'm a fantasist. It's absolutely a combined effort, but because my name's in the title, I get most of the credit. It's a good system.

What subjects do you include in your performances? Radiators, hoovers, love, the plague, it's a mixed bag. Ideally the audience would go in with fairly low expectations and be pleasantly surprised. Your songs are catchy yet so abstract - how do you make the ordinary so hilarious? That's very kind of you. And I don't have an answer. There's definitely no formula. It certainly helps that there are six of us in the band so we come from a lot of different angles.

Q

You’re also the creator of TV comedy series Taskmaster on Dave - how would you describe the show? It's a simple comedy show: Greg Davies and I set silly challenges to a cast of five comedians who compete against one another with complete conviction. It's all genuine, there's no script, and it's a very fun way to make funny people be funny. 

toe-tapping beats Holly Hughes shares her round-up of exciting music gigs.

sam lewis live (16+) Tue 5 February | 7pm

Like many before him, Sam Lewis came to Nashville to make music. He’s collaborated with everyone from Leon Russell to The Wood Brothers. Sam Lewis’ debut album, Waiting on you, received a top review from Mojo and featured in the Telegraph’s list of top country albums from 2015. As current events in the world divide the masses based on difference, Lewis’ latest album, Loversity, is a soul-filled, catchy collection of reminders that diversity and unity can co-exist. With rich soulful vocals, roots country and blue-eyed soul, you can expect a night of funky tunes with a country twist. From Chicago/Nashville to Swansea, the Rachel Baiman Trio visits Cinema & Co with their heart-melting alternative country music and serene harmonies. This will be an intimate, seated only evening of authentic Nashville country music with bluegrass roots. Baiman and her live trio will perform tracks from their latest self-produced four-song EP, Thanksgiving. The songs centre around themes of indigenous rights, home and homelessness, and love in hard times. But the collection is not all doom and gloom, however, as the first two darker tracks are followed by the cheerful John Hartford number, Madison Tennessee. swansea male choir

Swansea Male Choir is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Musical Director, Jessica Segelov, who is opening the doors to new members.

“THE CHOIR IS LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPLORING MUSIC FROM WEST END SHOWS AND MORE CONTEMPORARY PIECES”

J

essica is a Swansea-born musician who graduated with a BMus from Cardiff University School of Music. In 2015, she was awarded an MA in Ethnomusicology and came home to Swansea in 2016 where she studied her PGCE/PCET in the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and graduated with a distinction. Jessica currently teaches piano and violin at Oakleigh House School in the Uplands. She has sung with the Cardiff University Symphony Chorus, the Palestrina Singers, Cardiff Broadway Choir and J2N Gospel Choir, has conducted choirs in Swansea, Neath and Cardiff, and is very excited to be working with her first ever male voice choir. Under Jessica’s direction, the choir is looking forward to exploring a wide variety of singing styles with music from West End shows and more contemporary pieces, as well as nurturing their existing repertoire. 

want to join swansea male choir? WHO ARE WE? Swansea Male Choir formed 72 years ago and are a friendly group of local lads who love music and enjoy singing. WHEN AND WHERE DO WE PRACTICE? Mondays and Thursdays, 7pm - 8.30pm. We have our own choir practice space at 17 - 23 St Johns Road, Manselton SA5 8PY. IS THERE AN AUDITION? No - if you love to sing, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. DO I NEED TO READ MUSIC? No! Believe it or not, there are only a handful of choristers who can read music, the majority learn songs by ear, in four-part harmony. The end product always sounds amazing and just because you can’t read music when you start, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to by the time you’ve learned a song. STILL NOT SURE? Feel free to come along to one of our rehearsals. You can choose to sit and listen or sit amongst the choristers to get the full choir experience.

seen and unseen Sat 2 February Sat 23 March

Seen and Unseen is Ingrid Murphy’s first solo show, which forms part of Language of Clay, a National Touring exhibition series. Connectivity is crucial to Ingrid Murphy, between people and places and across time. Her explorations provoke and surprise us as she marries traditional ceramic processes with creative technologies. Be it the view from inside a teapot or the sounds from the streets of Jaipur, her pieces connect us to different perspectives and stories. Seen and Unseen is a witty expansion of the languages and qualities of clay. Curated by Ceri Jones.

Curated by Edward Chell, Phytopia presents diverse artists not usually seen in the same context and includes a number of works exhibited for the first time, with sculptural pieces by Derek Jarman and Paul de Monchaux and works by Rasheed Araeen alongside nineteenth-century Nature Prints and works from the Glynn Vivian collection.  Rosa Nguyen, Table Landscape, 2016, mixed media including glass, ceramic and preserved plants

for freedom and empire

until Sun 24 February When the news broke on 4 August 1914 that Britain had joined the war against Germany and AustriaHungary, many thought it would all be over by Christmas. It's often assumed that all communities and industries across Wales responded enthusiastically to the recruitment campaign which preceded conscription. But was that the case? For Freedom and Empire forms a key part of the Welsh Government’s Wales-wide programme marking the centenary and looks at responses in the slate quarrying communities of Wales, exploring if and why these communities found it difficult to respond to the recruitment call.   © National Library of Wales

'the old and the new' & talks in the attic The Attic Gallery February Show is a very special exhibition, added to our schedule for 2019. This show will be a two-week event, from Sat 16 February - Sat 2 March, and themed 'the old and the new'.

I

t brings together art from well renowned local artists whose families have kindly allowed us to sell these wonderful previously unexhibited pieces on their behalf. These ‘old’ artists need no introduction but their names: Jack Jones, George Little and Will Roberts. And whilst admiring the talent that these artists so obviously had, we should also look to our ‘new’ up-and-coming artists who aim to follow in the footsteps of these influential men. Sarah Louise Davies was born in Swansea and is a young and recent Fine Art graduate of the Cardiff Metropolitan University whose current work is influenced by abstraction and in developing her interpretation of landscapes through visual perception. Her working methods continue to evolve and include experimentation in more detailed style allowing the viewer to appreciate the world through her own experiences. James Iles is Swansea-born, but now lives in Helsinki, frequently relocating to the UK with his work, which is mainly in the feature film and television industry. James joined the Art department for Dr Who at the BBC in Cardiff in 2007 and has worked with a wide range of directors. He is also involved in projects such as the forthcoming feature film The Crow as well as Sherlock for Hartswood Films. As a freelancer, James has a wide range of clients in the UK and US, including Relativity Media, CBS, Open Road Films, and the BBC. 

Talks in the Attic Our Talks will run from 6pm-8pm on various dates during the two-week February show:  Tues 19 Peter Cronin A Storm in a Waterpot, Watercolour and Me  Wed 20 Alan Figg & Judith Stroud We do not Photocopy!  Thurs 21 Helen Sinclair A sculptors life  Tues 26 Nick John Rees The Humorous side of Life as a Marine Artist  Wed 27 Sarah Hopkins Printmaking  Thurs 28 Robert Macdonald Art and Myth We are also very pleased to have a talk by Andrew Green (ex-Chief Librarian of the NLW) on Fri 1 March, 6pm-8pm, Why isn’t Visual Art a Big Thing in Wales?

When you’ve finished work on a winters evening, it’s good to have something to look forward to. Here’s to jumping around and bouncing those calories away with the Go Air Fit programme at Go Air’s very own trampoline park. You could burn up to 800 calories per hour with Go Air’s extensive programme of high energy, low impact fitness classes. Pre-booking is essential.

Join choreographer and dancer Catherine Bennett at her popular Pilates class. The Pilates method focuses on abdominal strength, muscle tone and flexibility, increasing joint mobility, core strength and reducing back strain. Throughout the hour, Catherine will lead you through a programme of original Pilates exercises working all of the muscle groups. All levels welcome. Bring a yoga/Pilates mat if you have one.

Grab a pair of heels and shake what your mamma gave you. This is one sexy dance class run by the fabulously fierce professional dancer Antonia Williams. The class is suitable for girls (and guys!) of all abilities. You’ll learn how to perfect your strut in heels, how to twerk, and learn routines to all your favourite songs from the likes of Beyoncé, Tyga, Usher and Nicki Minaj. And the first class is free!

promoting pedal power Swansea University has been working with Welsh Cycling, the national governing body of cycling in Wales, to become the first university in Wales to launch its very own in-house Ride Leadership Programme.

“LED RIDES ARE A GREAT WAY FOR CYCLISTS TO GET INVOLVED WITH A GROUP, LEARN NEW SKILLS AND MEET LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE”

W

elsh Cycling works alongside British Cycling, lobbying government to improve conditions for cyclists, and plays a vital role in ensuring the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 is implemented, making it easier for people in Wales to cycle. Last summer, the University launched its Ride Leadership Programme. There are now 20 dedicated Ride Leaders made up of University staff and students who are qualified to offer guided bike rides to the University and local community. Jayne Cornelius, the University’s Sustainable Travel Officer is passionate about promoting cycling as an affordable, healthy, safe and sustainable mode of transport. She said: “This fantastic programme is aimed at people who love cycling and want to share their passion with others.” The cycling scheme, which promotes and encourages safe cycling, is proving popular, with budding cyclists of all levels being guided to all kinds of great locations across the city including Cefn Bryn, Verdi’s, Mumbles and Swansea Vale Nature Reserve. Even cycling suppliers have got involved in the initiative;

Swansea’s Giant Store in the Enterprise Park recently welcomed one of the rides to the store for an evening of bike maintenance workshops and discounted bike accessory shopping. Ride Leader and postgraduate student Irfansha Shaik said: “Led rides are a great way for cyclists of all levels to get involved with a group, learn new skills, gain confidence and meet like-minded people. It’s great for getting you out and about and a wonderful way to make new friends - especially if you’re new to the city! One thing we all share is a love of getting about by bike.” The led rides are not just for Swansea University staff and students. This is a community-focused scheme which anyone can take part in. And with Santander Cycles now established across the city, you can get involved even if you don’t have a bike of your own. To find out more and book your place on one of the Swansea University Led Rides, visit www.letsride.co.uk and search ‘Swansea’ 

sports preview 2019 Wales and Swansea are fast becoming a hub for sport. In 2019, the trend will continue as Wales plays host to a plethora of major sporting competition dotted all over the country. We dissect the local sporting year ahead.

six nations

What better place to start than with the Six Nations over February and March. This year, Wales play at home just twice - but it’s the big ones as England and Ireland come to town. On 23 February, the English visit Cardiff, and I don’t think we need to do much explaining about why this one is so important! Wales’ final Six Nations tie on 16 March will be against last year’s victors, Ireland - on the eve of St Patrick’s Day. Nice. With Gatland’s side constantly improving and bringing in genuine young talent all over the pitch, this match-up is one we’re already licking our lips over. Competition will be as fierce as ever, but Wales can go into the championship with confidence and look to build on a solid round coming off the back of the Autumn Internationals in November. With the World Cup just around the corner, this will be our last chance to see the boys before the big one in Japan.

ospreys

Can the Ospreys do the city proud? From what we’ve seen so far with the Ospreys, signs are good for 2019. Domestically, Ospreys are set for another competitive year in all competitions, but internationally, all eyes will be on the Welsh stars as they look to prove themselves ahead of the World Cup campaign in 2019. Dan Lydiate, George North, Justin Tipuric, Alun Wyn-Jones and Scott Williams are but a few of the big Welsh names we will get to see week in week out in 2019. It’s well worth a trip. swansea city

Are Swansea City pushing for promotion? A football season in the Championship is a hard, enduring one. Graham Potter has done a brilliant job with what he’s got, with Welsh stars Dan James and Conor Roberts particularly standing out in 2018. Can the Swans push for

promotion back into the Premier League in 2019? Perhaps. Is it worth going to see them play? Definitely. While the Swans aren’t blessed with financial might, they always put on a show. Should they continue to flirt with the play-off positions, excitement will build, and well, we might just be in for a brilliant second half of the season. cricket

The ICC Cricket World Cup is coming to England and Wales in June. There’ll be no matches in Swansea, but you can guarantee a day of excitement at Sophia Gardens with a jam-packed set of cricket fixtures. A lot of these countries are cricket mad, so the atmosphere is going to be electric. Tickets were balloted, but we believe there will still be some available. All fixtures: www.icc-cricket.com

Tenby will put on another show for the Ironman Wales in September too, and we’ll see the return of the Newport Marathon and Cardiff Half in May and October respectively. 

STYLIST HERO PRODUCT: GHD Curl Hold Spray £12.95

After your hair is thoroughly dry, take a section of hair and spray on the Curl Hold Spray from root to tip. Comb through, then use your styler to create your curl. The Curl Hold Spray is a light and non-sticky spray that works in partnership with your styler, tong or heated rollers to craft perfectly defined and long lasting curls. STYLE TIP Feed the GHD Platinum+ Styler with a section of hair, point the GHD Platinum+ Styler end down, turn 180 degrees and push down. Turn opposite ways to create texture, but make sure the direction is away from the face. Hair stylist Chloe says: “This is my favourite product for holding waves as it’s light and keeps the waves in for longer whilst protecting the hair from heat damage.”

Apply 2-4 pumps of the Total Volume Foam (depending on length/ thickness) to damp hair before blow-drying. The foam helps to create root lift, giving fullness to finer hair types. STYLE TIP To achieve big, bouncy, voluminous curls, take a clean horizontal section at the area you need the volume. Place the GHD Platinum+ Styler at the root, turn the styler 180 degrees and lift from the root. Continue until all the hair is luscious and bouncy. Hair stylist Erica says: “Use the GHD Volume Foam for this style as it will add bounce and the volume you need. As it’s a foam, you can see where you are applying it.” r + Style latinum P D GH

COVER TO COVER BOOKSHOP After a successful first year's trading as Swansea's only independent bookshop, owner Tim Batcup and his team had the misfortune to have to shut for 10 weeks for emergency building repairs. Now fully re-opened with a sleek refit and even more books than before, business was boosted by Tim and the shop being chosen to be the face of Visa's Christmas campaign. Situated in the heart of Mumbles, the shop comprises a smartly-chosen stock of contemporary fiction, all-age children's books, and general non-fiction with specialisms in local history and music. This is complemented by a large selection of cards and gifts, plus a yearlong programme of literary events.

six authentic

east asian restaurants

If you’re looking for traditional east Asian flavours, then look no further. Jiusi (Josie) Zhang shares her go-to authentic dishes from some of her favourite eateries in Swansea.

China Deli Café

Thai Taste

Recommended dish: Roast pork What to expect: Inexpensive and enjoyable authentic menu options, with a separate special menu where you can find unique items such as whole sweet and sour seabass and hand-shredded chicken. And the portions are plentiful! You can order rice or noodle dishes, or do it the Chinese way and order a few dishes to share with rice on the side.

Recommended dish: Chicken/ prawn pad thai What to expect: Situated in the busy Swansea Market, this little eatery offers Thai 'fast food' with many noodle and rice dishes for under £5. If you fancy a healthier option for lunch, why not try one of the Thai salads under the specialities section of the menu. Eat in or take away for your convenience.

Recommended dish: Chirashi don What to expect: A colourful and extensive menu with many different sushi (including vegetarian), bento boxes, rice dishes and noodle dishes. It's hard to pick out any particular dishes, because everything has great presentation and tastes amazing. The ramen in their noodle soups are al dente and sushi is skilfully made fresh to order. The vegetarian sushi with cucumber is light and refreshing as an appetiser. Vegan dishes are also available.

Gigi Gao's Favourite Authentic Chinese

Gigi Gao's Favourite Authentic Chinese 4

Recommended dish: Lazy chicken What to expect: Gigi Gao's restaurant in the heart of the marina offers authentic Chinese cuisine entirely MSG free. You can try out Lazy, Gong Bao and Yuxiang dishes, which aren't your average take-away options. Everything is freshly made to order using quality ingredients. As a lighter option, choose a traditional Chinese soup. All of their noodles are home-made (the traditional Chinese way of course).

Star BBQ

Recommended dish: Set BBQ meal for 2/4 What to expect: This newly popped up chic Korean-style BBQ restaurant near Joe's Ice Cream has been opened by the same owners as the Star Bar and Chinese Restaurant off Wind Street. Their waiters and waitresses help you to cook your BBQ meat, seafood and vegetables at your table. Not only does the set menu offer fresh BBQ meat, seafood and veg, it also comes with distinctively Korean bibimbap and cold noodles, which are not only pretty to look at, but also delicious. Their lunch menu for just £7.50 is a

fast and convenient option. 82 St Helen's Road, Swansea SA1 4BQ 01792 301888 6

Gourmet Café

Recommended dish: Beef brisket ho fun What to expect: Similar to China Deli Café and a favourite with local Chinese students, Gourmet Café offers some different dishes such as Pipa Tofu. Don't expect top-notch service, but the visit is worthwhile for the food. They have three levels of spicy food, so if you like hot food you will enjoy.  84 Bryn-y-mor Road, Swansea SA1 4JE 01792 416706

ADVERTORIAL

a fancy brew

Cha-tŷ is a new cwtchy teahouse which offers a range of antioxidant-infused teas to kick-start your new year detox. Holly Hughes went to find out more.

T

his bright and airy teahouse is the latest addition to Newton Road, Mumbles. The quirky name, a fun play on ‘chatty’, has been derived from the Japanese word ‘Cha’ meaning tea and the Welsh word ‘tŷ’ meaning house. The new venture is the proud creation of husband and wife team Sebastian and Mari. This is a teahouse for those that enjoy the finer things; your taste buds will be revitalised with the myriad and complexity of flavours. Marie studied at the UK Tea Academy in London to further fuel her passion for the artistry of tea, which stems from her Japanese heritage. You can choose from 20-25 speciality teas including: black, white, green, fruit, herbal and matcha, which are all expertly brewed and served at optimum flavour. Decaf teas are also available and it’s worth mentioning that despite matcha tea containing caffeine, the effects are little to none as the caffeine metabolises differently to the usual form. Café au lait (French style coffee) and matcha latte are both available. Mari honours Japanese Coffee Culture by continuing the traditional brewing methods; speciality coffee is hand-dripped and all teas are served in the

appropriate traditional crockery. Whether it be fine bone china for herbal teas, large bowls for matcha tea or authentic Japanese crockery. Plus, the array of Zero Japan teapots available to buy (in all the colours of the rainbow, 57 in all) are sure to catch your eye. Fresh coffee beans and a range of Japanese teas are also on sale. To accompany your beverages, there is a short but sweet food menu of home-made cakes, desserts and small breakfasts. As is customary these days, afternoon teas will soon be available. A dessert that Mari is particularly excited about is parfait, made with fresh fruit, layered with ice cream and freshly whipped cream. It’s very popular with the kiddies as is the melon soda with ice cream and hot chocolates. Cha-tŷ is a tranquil meeting place - the ideal hideaway to relax with friends and family whilst enjoying the detox benefits of tea. 

crempogau

Everyone loves a hearty stack of pancakes, but it’s fun to change it up! Katie Davies, quarter finalist of BBC One’s Britain’s Best Home Cook, shares her Welsh alternative.

C

ingredients

rempogau are traditionally cooked on bakestones and are one of the oldest recipes in Wales, usually eaten on Shrove Tuesday or St David’s Day. Not dissimilar to American pancakes, they are thick and fluffy, a wonderful alternative to try this Pancake Day, Tues 5 March.

 450ml buttermilk  60g butter  280g self-raising flour  85g caster sugar  1 tsp. bicarbonate of soda  pinch of salt

s Davie Katie

 1 tbsp. white wine vinegar  2 eggs

method 1. Warm the buttermilk in a pan, stir through the butter until melted, then remove from the heat 2. Add the flour, sugar, bicarb and salt to a bowl, then slowly add the buttermilk, stirring all the time, to form a thick batter. Leave to sit for about 30 mins 3. Add the vinegar to the eggs and beat well; stir in to a batter until well combined 4. Heat up a cast iron hot plate or a heavy-based frying pan until hot. Rub all over with butter 5. Add the batter to the pan (2 tbsps. per pancake) and cook until bubbles appear on the top of the batter, then flip. Continue until all the batter is used up 6. Serve warm and spread with butter and jam.

serving suggestions Crempogau can also be made with raisins. I soak mine in milk whilst the batter sits, then drain and stir through the batter, and blueberries also work well. There are endless serving suggestions for crempogau, but my favourite has to be fresh berries and maple syrup. 

Sampling what’s new on the culinary scene

dandelion café 65 Southgate Road, Southgate, Swansea SA3 2DH | dandelionlove@mail.com

Having heard so much about Dandelion Café in Pennard, I was eager to try it out. Small but perfectly formed, Dandelion has built a name for itself as a healthy eating haven, and with one glance at the menu, I could see why. Taking my seat, I was greeted by owner Toby and his partner Amy who made me feel at home. Amy recommended a turmeric latte to warm up another first for me - which didn't disappoint. Sweeter than I'd expected, but with the right level of spice to comfort and shake off the cold from outside. I continued this theme when eating, ordering the jerk-marinated chicken on a bed of slaw with sweet and spicy mango purée. The chicken itself was so tender - if I'd closed my eyes, I could've been in Jamaica. The accompanying slaw was properly crunchy and hadn't been spoiled with unnecessary heavy cream. The whole dish - despite appearances - was satisfyingly filling, readying me to brave the elements once again. A welcome addition to the rural community! Please note, Dandelion will be closed January but open as normal from February for the new season. ANDREW WHITTY

Mexican food has been having a moment for a while. Calaca is a new(ish) kid on the block and has been the talk of the town - in a good way - as locals have flocked to try the authentic home-cooking from this tiny kitchen. All the classic Mexican dishes we know and love are here, including burritos, tacos and enchiladas. When it comes to fillings, choose from chicken, prawns, pork, spicy beef, and, for the veggies and vegans, pinto beans. There’s also a kids’ menu and some rather delectable desserts. There are 15 different types of tequila - and the very tasty Tommy’s Margarita - as well as a range of Mexican beers and wine. It’s always nice to see vegan options and my friend and I were happy to see dairy-free sour cream and cheese on the menu and the caramelised apple burrito with coconut ice cream for pudding. There’s a friendly, relaxed vibe and the service is super speedy, but it’s worth noting that it can get busy. Bookings are only available to groups of four or more, but trust me, these fresh flavours and hearty helpings are worth the wait. SARAH PHILPOTT

The thumb-stopping Instagram pics of Bluebell's delicious dishes often have me wanting to lick my smartphone screen! So, when I found myself in Sketty on my birthday, I decided to pop in and finally sample Sophia's creations in real life. I can confirm they taste as good as they look! I opted for one of Bluebell's bagels filled with shaved pastrami, gherkin and fiery mustard. Flavourful and filling, it was a struggle to finish the cake delivered afterwards with compliments on my special day, but I managed!

Llwyn Hall has gone through a bit of a transformation. An impressive refurbishment and new management team have brought a freshness to the Llanelli Country House, which I was fortunate to experience when attending a recent event. Each of my courses was a triumph, but I was particularly fond of the Gower salt marsh lamb with bubble and squeak cake and red wine jus. The element of the evening I remember most however was the impeccable service. I couldn't fault it! Highly recommend.

Higher Green, Reynoldston, Gower SA3 1AD | 01792 390775

You can't blink without a new foodie destination opening in Swansea, and the latest to grab my attention is Maisie's. I popped in for breakfast on my way to the office and was delighted to discover their 'half-English' - a perfectly portioned dish, not too little, not too much. Featuring everything we love about a full English, it was a steal at just £4. Their popular waffles menu is served all day. There are also extensive brunch and evening menus and an a-maz-ing selection of gins to try.

It seems like a lifetime ago that we were able to dine al fresco, but thanks to some sunshine, I took the opportunity to enjoy The King Arthur Hotel's views of Reynoldston village. Saying that, my eyes were soon fixating on the table when presented with this toasted ciabatta stuffed with tangy, mature cheddar and perfectly cooked steak strips. It's safe to say that I left feeling like a king myself, and thankfully, the walk across the common afterwards burned off any naughty calories consumed! 
