Weyburn Comp basketball teams play at regional playoffs

The Weyburn Comp Eagles senior girls and senior boys basketball teams both competed at regionals over the weekend, with the girls in Lloydminster, and the boys in Moose Jaw.

For the girls’ first game at the 5A regionals on Friday afternoon, they played the 10th seeded Lloydminster Comprehensive High School and trailed most of the game until the final seven minutes.

The seventh-seeded Eagles then pulled ahead and were able to maintain their lead, defeating Lloydminster 62-57.

Their second game, on Friday evening, was a tough one against the No. 2-seeded Prince Albert Carlton Comprehensive School.

The Eagles started strong and the score was tied early. Eventually Carlton dominated with their press and stole the ball numerous times, which gave them a widening lead over the Eagles.

The Eagles knew this would be a tough team to play and they maintained a positive attitude throughout the game, but ended with the score of 89-30, which ended the 2022-23 season for the squad.

Coach Karly Johnson was unable to travel with the team for Regionals but watched from home, and the team was coached by the assistant coach Hailey Neiszner and ac -

companied by Andrea Kerr from the Weyburn Comp School staff.

WCS senior boys went to Moose Jaw on Friday to compete in the SHSAA regional tournament hoping to earn a spot to the HOOPLA provincial championship next weekend.

They had a great start to the tournament as the boys defeated Balgonie in their first game.

Game 2 saw them come up against the No. 2-seeded Prince Albert St. Mary’s squad. The Eagles fought hard and kept the game close for as long as they could, but St Mary’s was just too tough and the Eagles fell, ending their season.

Meantime, in high school wrestling, Cale Mohan came up short in his bid to become provincial champion in the SHSAA finals in the male 69 kg category.

He lost in the final to the same wrestler he lost to in Regionals. They both were top seeded in the tournament and cleaned house on all the city champs and medalists from Saskatoon and Regina with no problem, but he didn’t get the win in the final and placed second.

Mohan is now headed to Nationals in Vancouver for club wrestling today, March 22, for the tournament, which takes place from March 23-26.

ing seven saves on 15 shots and a .467 save percentage.

The last round-robin match was against Melbourne’s Storm, and Canada won 12-10. Petersen was in net for one quarter, and made 16 saves on 19 shots. He had a .667 save percentage.

In the final game, Petersen was in net for 16 minutes, and made four
