Chamber to host candidates forum
The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce is announcing the confirmed candidates in attendance for an All-Candidates Forum on Thursday, May 18, for the City of Weyburn’s municipal by-election.
The following candidates have been invited to participate in the Forum: Larry Heggs, Dana Pretzer, Trevor Tessier, and Brandon Tichkowsky.
The event will commence at 10 a.m. and will also be recorded by Access Communications. This will not be a live broadcast on Access Communications, but will be aired on May 24, 26 and 29 at 7 p.m.
Candidates will entertain questions posed by both Chamber members and the public. Members of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce and the public are
encouraged to submit their questions to the following email: manager@weyburnchamber.com.
Alternatively, call the Chamber office at (306) 8424738 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays to submit questions. Questions will be taken live during the event via the chat in Zoom.
The Chamber’s purpose in providing this forum is to facilitate a respectful dialogue between candidates. This is not considered an atmosphere for debate.
Candidates will not be given an opportunity to debate issues with their fellow candidates. They will be simply responding to the questions posed to them within a given time frame.

Tickets still available for Tessa Virtue event
There are still tickets available from the Young Fellows Club of Weyburn for an event with former Olympic and world champion figure skater Tessa Virtue.
She will be featured in an “Evening with Tessa Virtue” on Thursday, May 18, at the Weyburn Curling Rink. She was originally slated to come in 2020, but the event had to be cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
She and skating partner Scott Muir competed at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, winning gold, the first North American ice dancers to ever win the Olympic championship.

Winners of hairstylist competition awarded
The top three winners of the hairstylists’ grad competition, at the Teach-and-Trim at SE College, received their certificates on Saturday. The challenge was to do the hairstyling and makeup for a grad in a set time limit.

Altogether, she and Muir won five Olympic medals, three gold and two silver, and were the most decorated figure skaters in Olympic history.
Doors will open for the evening event at 5:30 p.m. with a prime rib dinner at 6:30 p.m., and entertainment will follow. Tickets are $100 for adults, and 12 and under is $50, but they must be accompanied by an adult. There are a limited number of corporate tables for eight available, for $1,000.

Applying makeup for a grad competition
Review
Greg Nikkel Stylist student Wynter Sorenson carefully applied makeup for Madison Renner, as part of the hairstylists competition on Saturday to do a grad makeover and hairdo. This was held with the hairstylists at the Teach-and-Trim Salon at Southeast College. Wynter and Madison placed second overall in the competition.
Hairstylists take part in grad competition
Hairstylists training in Southeast College’s Teach and Trim Hair Salon in Weyburn took part in a grad competition on Saturday.
The six hairstylists each had a model for the morning, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., doing the hair and makeup for the girls, including having them put on grad dresses, and they were judged for the quality of their work.

The hairstylists course is a diploma program offered in partnership with Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Hairstylists who want to work in a salon are required to complete a 1,500-hour pre-employment program

The program is 45 weeks in length, beginning in September and going through to August, with students learning how to style hair and do manicures and pedicures.
They develop artistry, salon management and customer service skills, and there is an apprenticeship period of up to two years.
The stylists are current-
ly taking clients from Tuesday to Saturday each week, and the last day for clients will be Aug. 10. In July and August, the salon will be open Monday to Friday.
The competition gave the students good practice with grad season coming up at high schools in the Weyburn and surrounding area, and the salon can provide up-do style and makeup application for grads for $40 and up.
