Minnie Goertzen

Minnie Goertzen, late of Weyburn, SK, born on July 6, 1931 in Glen Kerr, SK left to join the angels on January 5, 2023.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Gerard and her son Ed; both her parents; her brothers Ed, Tony, and Peter as well as her sister Gladys.

Minnie is survived by her daughters Monica and Wanda; sons James, Gerald, Glen, and Tony; her brother Johnny and her sisters Lorraine, Ester and Elsie; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and other family. Our mother was a rock and a survivor who suffered many challenges in her life. She survived infantile paralysis at age 3 and several surgeries after to try to save her foot. In 1965 she had her leg amputated. Minnie married the love of her life in July, 1952 and together they had 7 children. Mom loved horses and it is apparent by the amount of ornaments she has. She loved music. We remember growing up and loved to watch her play the harpsichord. She and Dad formed a band called the Blue Fiddle Band. Dad played fiddle and Mom followed on the harp and eventually played keyboard. They played their music all around the Weyburn area. Mom taught us patience and com-passion for others and was a strong advocate for the underdog. She was always there with a helping hand in whatever way was needed. There will never be another woman like her. We are immensely proud to have had her for our Mom. We have never lived in a world without her and now we must adjust to a life in a world that she is no longer in but she will continue to live in our hearts. Private Family Service will be held at a later date. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK. Donations in memory of Minnie may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online obituary at: www. myalternatives.ca. Funeral arrangements are in care of Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services, Regina, SK (306-757-2327).

Harold Balzer

Harold Joseph Balzer was born on January 29th, 1943 in Pangman Hospital with Dr. Allaire delivering him. He was the only child of Nick and Margaret Balzer. Harold took his schooling at Carnarvon School, which wasn’t too far from their farm. His Uncle Jake, Uncle Andy & Uncle Har-old lived not far from them, so he had many cousins to play with. Harold was handicapped all his life, but in spite of his disability, he had a good life. When his dad was no longer farming, and after he retired, he took him everywhere. They would get in the truck and put on the miles, going down to Minton to visit family, stopping at Ceylon and making many trips into Weyburn, Regina and even a trip to Ontario. They enjoyed sightseeing and visiting. Harold along with his parents, moved off the farm and into Pangman in 1970. He told me that he was very happy to get into town and that he did not like the winters out on the farm. He made many new friends in town and played a lot of card games no matter what time of day or night. Harold also enjoyed watching the men play pool at the Seniors Center and having coffee at the Cafe. He simply enjoyed visiting with everyone. After the death of his father in May of 1991, Harold moved into the Marion Home in Radville, as his mother couldn’t care for him. She also moved to the Golden Heritage in Radville so she could be close to Harold and they visited daily. In 1997, Margaret and Harold moved back to Pangman and both became residents in the new Deep South Care Home. They enjoyed playing cards, bingo, bowling, musical entertainment, socializing and lots more. In December of 2010, Harold moved to the Weyburn Special Care Home due to a new level of care and his mother followed him there. They had rooms across the hall from each other, and you never saw one without the other. They met many new friends again and were busy with their card games and many other activities. Harold and his mom spent many, many hours together and the bond between them was a special one. It was a very sad day for him when his mother passed away in April 2017 at the age of 99. He had many friends at the Care Home and they kept him busy with many activities. Harold enjoyed “Pub Day” and always had one Bohemian beer....which he called a “real beer”! Harold attended Mass every Saturday and then enjoyed the coffee and socializing that followed. He never complained very much, only that they didn’t give him enough meat at his meals and they didn’t toast his bread dark enough! Harold was predeceased by his parents, Nickolas and Margaret Balzer and his grandparents. Harold leaves to cherish his memory many cousins and friends at the Weyburn Special Care Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, Pangman, Saskatchewan with Father Louis Abello. Interment will take place in Pangman Cemetery, Pangman, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Harold may be made to the Weyburn Special Care Home Auxiliary. The Staff at the Home were very good to Harold and they all loved him and said he was just like family. It really showed as the week before he passed, the staff sat with him and talked to him, even though he couldn’t respond. He was a very special cousin and friend to many. He was a kind and gentle man with a very infectious smile and he was always happy. We love you Harold....may you rest in Peace. Condolences may be left at: www.fletcherfuneralchapel. com. Iris Windjack

September 21, 1931 December 3, 2022 We sadly announce the peaceful passing of Iris Windjack on December 3, 2022 at The Summit Personal Care Home in Victoria. Born September 21, 1931 on the family farm near Insinger, Saskatchewan to Stephan and Basilina (Lena) Springenatyk, Iris was the consummate hostess who reveled in feeding and caring for family and guests and had a particular soft spot for cats. Many of her recipes have become the mainstay of family cooking. Iris met Walter Windjack at a Fowl Supper in 1949 and on October 1, 1950 they were married at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Ortodox Church in Westbrook, Saskatchewan. This marked the beginning of their love story that spanned over 65 years. In 1952 Iris and Walter moved to Melville, Saskatchewan where son Rod was born in 1953. Soon after, the little family moved to Duval, Saskatchewan, and a Principal post for Walter. Son Perry was born in 1962 before the family moved to Strasbourg, Saskatchewan - eight miles away - allowing all of the close friendships to carry on and flourish. In 1969 the family moved to Kamsack, Saskatchewan and expanded their circle of friends even more. 1972 saw a move to Weyburn where Iris spent time working for the local Co-op Store, discovering a talent for retail sales. Iris and Walter made lasting friendships wherever they called home, enjoying every community they lived in and busily kept in touch with one and all. In 1996 after Walter’s retirement, they moved to Westbank, BC. Finally, after many summer and winter road trips from Saskatchewan to BC to visit Iris’ Mom, Dad and siblings, Iris was able to call BC home. Westbank was their introduction to condo life where they lived in close proximity to Iris’s sister Jo and husband Bill, her brother Gus and wife Rochelle and Walter’s brother Ted and wife Rose. With Westbank as their home base, Iris and Walter spent many summers at son Perry’s ranch in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and many winter house sits on Vancouver Island to be near Rod’s family. Visits, as they always had been no matter where home was, were always filled with card playing and the enjoyment of the people around them. Iris was an avid curler, bridge player, crotchet expert, knitter, cat person and a keen listener. She loved music and always was on top of current events, movements and fashion. Iris was predeceased by her brother Orest Springenatyk, brother Roy Springenatyk, brother Gus Springenatyk, daughter-in-law Marci Windjack, brother and sister-in-law Ted and Rose Windjack and brother-in-law Ed Odway. She will be deeply missed by her sons Rod (Bev) and Perry, grandchildren Allayne Olson (Calvin), Nicola Reiersen (Kristen), Christopher Windjack (Emily), Brodie Windjack, Sydney Windjack and great-grandchildren Mason Anaka, Luke, Bennett, Rhyan Olson, Quinn and Maeve Reiersen and August Windjack. She will also be missed by her sister Jo (Bill), sisters in law Goldie, Gail, Rochelle and Gloria as well as number cousins, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to The Summit staff for their dedication to Iris and her well being. Interment will be held at a future date for family members. Please consider donations to your favourite charity in Iris’ name. Condolences may be offered to the family below. McCall Gardens, www.mccallgardens.com.
