Red Wings edged out by visiting Broncos, Ice Wolves

The Richardson Pion eer Weyburn Red Wings had hoped to win out over the visiting Humboldt Broncos for a second time, but were edged out by one goal 7-6 on Saturday even ing, capping off Weyburn Hockey Day.

The team members then held a skate with fans after the game, along with players from the Weyburn Gold Wings.

The Wings also dropped their Friday night match against the La Ronge Ice Wolves by a score of 5-3.

In the Broncos game, the Red Wings were first on the board with a pair of goals, the first by Nicholas Kovacs, assisted by Jakob Kalin, and then on a blueline shot by Elijah Ander son, assisted by Kovacs.

The Broncos got one back with 35 seconds left in the period.

Ty Mason of the Red Wings scored unassisted in the second period, then Humboldt scored a pair to tie the game up.

Jackson Hassman scored, assisted by Blake Norris, followed a minute later with a Broncos goal, then Mason got his second goal of the game on a pass from Ryley Morgan.

The game had to be sus pended 15 minutes in to the period when glass shat tered, and the remainder of the period was tacked on to the third period.

Humboldt scored twice, and Weyburn’s Ry ley Morgan scored to tie the game back up on an as

sist from Mason, but Hum boldt got the winning goal at the halfway point of the third period.

Matt Schoephoerster was in net for the Red Wings, saving 47 of the 54 shots made on him.

The Broncos scored on three of five power plays, while the Red Wings scored on one of their three powerplay opportunities.

In Friday night’s match, Mason scored the game’s first goal from Morgan, and there was no more scoring until 7:44 of the second when the Ice Wolves tied the game.

Mason scored a second time, this time assisted by Kovacs and Morgan, then La Ronge scored twice to take the lead, adding two more in the third period.

Weyburn’s Hassman added a goal, assisted by Kalin, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Ice Wolves.

Dazza Mitchell re turned to the Red Wings lineup and was in net for most of the game, making 32 saves on 37 shots. He was pulled at 18:23 of the third period for the extra attacker.

The next action for the Red Wings will be on Friday, Dec. 9, when they host the Kindersley Klip pers, and will hold the teddy bear toss for the Sal vation Army.

The Melfort Mustangs will visit on Saturday, Dec. 10, with both games starting at 7 p.m. at Cres cent Point Place.

Gold Wings host Bears for Hockey Day game

The Richardson Pion eer Weyburn Gold Wings took part in the Weyburn Hockey Day activities, in cluding playing road hock ey on Saturday morning, and hosting the Prince Al bert Northern Bears for a game in the afternoon.

The Gold Wings lost to the Bears 3-1, and then travelled to Regina on Sunday to play the Rebels, and dropped that game by a score of 4-2.

In Saturday’s game, the Gold Wings were the first on the scoreboard, as Syd ney Dauvin scored around the 15-minute mark, as sisted by Addison Long more and Jenay Hyndman.

The Bears tied the game with 23 seconds to go in the period, and they added two more in the third per iod after a close scoreless second period, including an empty netter with 14 seconds left in the game.

Hailey Sibbald was in

net for most of the game, except for the last minute when the Gold Wings tried to tie the game with an ex tra attacker. She saved 25 of the 27 shots made on her.

In Sunday’s game, the Rebels scored once in the first and second periods, then Abigail Manz scored midway through the third period on a powerplay, as sisted by Ashton Bender.

It was Bender’s turn to score, also on the power play, at 5:25, assisted by Manz and Kendal Leader.

Amy Swayze was in net for the full 60 minutes, saving 35 of the 39 shots that came her way.

The Gold Wings will host the Saskatoon Stars for two games on Satur day, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m., both at Crescent Point Place.

These will be the girls’ final games before the Christmas holidays.

Celebrating the game’s first goal

Gold Wings defenceman heading to Canada Winter Games with Team Sask.

A defenceman from the Richardson Pioneer Wey burn Gold Wings, Julianne Girardin, is on the roster for Team Saskatchewan’s Female Under-18 team heading to the Canada Winter Games.

The Winter Games will be held from Feb. 18 to March 5 in Prince Edward Island.

Team Saskatchewan has been a participant in Women’s ice hockey at the Canada Winter Games since its inception in 1991. Two medals have been

claimed by the green and gold, with the first being silver in 1995 and a bronze in 2003. Most recently, Saskatchewan’s Female Hockey program finished in sixth place at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Team Saskatchewan on the Women’s side will include seven returning players from the previous season.

Team staff for the Fe male Under-18 team is represented by Robin Ul rich (Head Coach), Deana Gelinas (Assistant Coach),

Alana Serhan (Assistant Coach), Kori Herner (As sistant Coach), Emma Galloway (Athletic Ther apist), Colleen Compton (Equipment Manager), Kyle McDonald (Mental Performance Consultant), and Joel Houseman (Direc tor of Operations).

“Being the head coach of an all-female staff for Team Saskatchewan is a really great honour and something that’s really special and unique. … It’s something that, I think, has only hap pened once before, quite a

long time ago. It is awesome to see that we’ve got to the level that we’re able to field a really well-experienced and strong coaching staff,” Head Coach Robin Ulrich said. “I think there’s just a different connection that female coaches have with female athletes. It is going to be pretty neat, and I’m really excited about the journey ahead for our group.”

Girardin also recently announced that she has signed on to play with the University of Regina for the 2023-24 season.

Scoring the game’s first goal

Midale splits weekend games, YG drops game

The

Midale visited the Kipling Arena to play the Oil Kings on Dec. 1, and were edged out by a score of 8-7. Midale won 112 over the Wawota Flyers dur ing a home game on Dec. 2.

In the Oil Kings game, Midale’s goals were from Zach Holzer in the first per iod; Alex Bechtold (two) and Kendall Oliver in the second; and Kaden Ludwig, Devon Johnson and Taylor Thomp son in the third, with Thomp son’s goal coming with 1:21 left in the game. Talen King was in net.

In the win at home, Midale

took a commanding 5-1 lead in the first period, with goals by Thompson, Bechtold, Connor Burk and two by Steven Lin denbach. Thompson scored again in the second, along with Ludwig and Oliver. In the third, Lindenbach and Burk both earned hat trick. Devon Pompu was in goal.

In the Yellow Grass game on Dec. 4, they lost by a score of 8-3 to the Bienfait Coalers on home ice.

Dylan Frey scored in the first period, followed by four goals by the Coalers. Conor Lafoy scored the other two goals, one in the second and one near the end of the game.

Tanner Erickson handled the goalie’s duties for the full 60 minutes.
