Red Wings doubled up by Flin Flon

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were doubled by the visiting Flin Flon Bombers on Friday night, dropping the game 6-3 in front of 573 fans.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings premiered their new black jerseys for the home game, and the Wey burn Fire Department had volunteers on hand to sell chuck-a-pucks in the lobby.

The game was much closer than the final score indicated, with the Bomb ers striking first with 48 seconds to go in the first period, and then again three and a half minutes into the second.

Weyburn’s Ty Mason scored to bring them with in one, assisted by Eduard Wruck and Lucas Jeffreys, but then Flin Flon scored twice in less than a minute.

The Red Wings’ Mat teo Speranza scored un assisted at 17:45, and three minutes into the

third, Jakob Kalin brought the Wings back to within one goal of the Bombers. He was assisted by Braigh LeGrandeur and Elijah Anderson.

Flin Flon scored late in the third, and after Red Wings goalie Dazza Mitchell was pulled the Bombers added an emptynetter to clinch the win.

Mitchell was in for the whole game, except for a minute and 20 seconds in the third, and saved 29 of 34 shots that came his way.

On the powerplay, Weyburn was one for five, while Flin Flon didn’t score on any of their powerplay opportunities.

The Red Wings’ next game will be in Kinders ley against the Klippers on Oct. 18, and against Melville on Oct. 21 in their arena before host ing the Millionaires back at Crescent Point Place on Oct. 22.

WCS volleyball teams have busy weekend

The Weyburn Comp Eagles senior boys vol leyball took action in Re gina this past weekend in a 16-team tournament host ed by Winston Knoll.

The boys had some highs and lows and finished

with a 3-2 record at the end of pool play. However, they got on a hot streak in the playoffs, defeating Saska toon St. Joseph, Saskatoon Bethlehem, and the host team Winston Knoll, all in two sets.

This lined them up against Martin Collegiate in the gold medal game. The boys played against them in pool play and lost in a split, so a rematch was in order. The boys lost two close sets 22-25 and 21-25 in the final.

“The boys got in a great rhythm on Saturday, but by the time the final had come, they had already played five matches to

Martin’s three that day,” said coach Cory Olson.

“They started to run out of gas against the fresher Martin team, but they bat tled hard and it was still an exciting final. They defin itely showed this weekend that they can compete with the top 5A teams in the province.”

Next boys next action is the Oct. 21-22 week end in Moose Jaw where they will play in another 16-team tournament.

The WCS Senior Girls played at the St. Joseph’s 12-team tournament in Saskatoon over the week end. The Eagles finished fourth in their pool just

missing the playoff round.

Meanwhile, both of the Junior A girls teams ended up finishing as the top two team in the B Pool of their home tournament over the weekend, played at the Cugnet Centre.

Team Taylor Swift end ed up finishing first in the B side Pool and Team Jus tin Bieber finished second.

The Junior “A” team was divided into the two squads so they could get more playing time over the weekend. The WCS Sr. B girls played in Radville on Saturday. The Eagles lost both round-robin games and did not make the play off round.

New librarian hopes to increase involvement at Weyburn library

The new head librarian for the Weyburn Public Li brary, Deborah Schrempel, is hoping to see more in volvement in programs at the library, particularly by men and boys, and to find out what the community wants to see.

She began in her new pos ition on Sept. 26, replacing Katherine Wagner, who has left to take a position at the Saskatchewan Legislature Library in Regina.

Prior to coming to Wey burn, she spent 11 years working in the oilpatch in Lampman, lived for a time in Grande Prairie, Alta., and then was in Regina to take training in health informa

tion management. “I have a background in education, so I’m all about making sure the resources are available for people in the community,” she said.

“I want to see programs improve with attendance,” added Schrempel, noting at some point she would like to do a community survey to find out what people’s inter ests are, or if there are pro grams they would like to see at the library.

“I can’t say enough about how amazing the staff are here,” she said, adding she was very im pressed by the inviting en vironment when she first entered the library, with the knowledgeable and friend

ly staff ready to help out.

Programs that may help bring people in include having Discord available through the library, and events like the upcoming book sale in early Novem ber, and the pumpkin carv ing later this month.

The library will begin to take in donations of books and other materials for the book sale on Oct. 20, with the sale set for ThursdaySaturday, Nov. 3-5.

Schrempel said she’d

like to see more puzzles do nated, as they sold well at the spring book sale, along with books and magazines for children, teens and adults, and DVDs and CDs.

“It’s a great way to get cost-effective Christmas gifts or something for your self,” she said, noting that on the last day of the sale, people will be able to fill up a bag or a box for $5 with as many books or materials as they want.

They will not take any

donations of encyclopedias or textbooks, she added.

Family pumpkin carving will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Schrempel noted they had a very good start with a donation of 25 pumpkins by the Wholesale Club, and she’s hoping for a few small er sized ones as well.

The library plans to also start up an adult Dun geons and Dragons group in the new year, to supple ment the one currently of

fered for teens. She was asked to host a class for knitting and cro cheting for youth. She is hoping for programs to in terest men and boys, and is looking for any suggestions about programs men would like to see at the library.

For any teens at the Wey burn Comp looking for vol unteer hours, Schrempel pointed out that they would like to have volunteers for events at the library, such as the book sale as an example.

The Weyburn Co-oper ative Playschool is hold ing their annual “Pumpkin Patch” fundraiser event on Saturday, Oct. 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at Grace United Church.

They will have pony rides, a pumpkin patch, and the opportunity for family photos on the site. There will also be games and tattoos, with snacks and drinks available.

There is no admission

for the event, but as it’s a fundraiser, organizers en courage people to buy a pumpkin, or they can also donate to the playschool.

Those interested can also check out their post on the event on their Face book page, and those who like and share can win a variety of prizes, includ ing a $20 Co-op gift card, a $25 Visa gift card, a free pumpkin, a a free photo or a free pony ride.
