Senior Capstone Design and First Year Smart Projects
Design, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship from Day One U.S.News and World Report has named Western New England University to its “Best in Undergraduate Engineering” list, a category encompassing college and university engineering programs nationwide that focus primarily on undergraduate education. From the first day on campus to their capstone Senior Design Projects, students learn engineering design through rigorous classroom and hands-on laboratory experiments. The College of Engineering faculty has been working and will continue to work on integrating entrepreneurship education into the engineering curriculum. The faculty also maintains strong relationships with regional and national industries and corporations. As a result of this collaboration, our students are afforded great internship opportunities and most of the senior capstone design projects are industry-based. April 23 ECE Senior Design Projects, 2:00 p.m. April 23 IE Senior Design Projects, 5:00 p.m. April 28 ME Senior Design Projects, main session 12:30 p.m. Three breakout sessions, 1:00 p.m. April 29 First Year Project Expo, 10:00-11:30 a.m. April 29 CEE Senior Design Projects, 3:30 p.m. April 30 BME Senior Design Projects, 2:00-4:30 p.m. To join these presentations, go to wne.edu/engineering-expo.

SENIOR CAPSTONE DESIGN PROJECTS The Culmination of Engineering Education
The College of Engineering at Western New England University provides a number of opportunities for undergraduate students to gain experience with technical research. One of the main sources of this valuable experience is through the comprehensive Senior Design Project. These yearlong projects are the capstone of every engineering student’s education at Western New England University. The Senior Design Project allows students to apply the knowledge they have learned in courses to improve the quality of human life. The projects come from a variety of sources with topics ranging from the design and improvement of operations at an emergency room, to the investigation of new green energy sources. Senior Design Projects have resulted in groundbreaking inventions, patents, and award-winning papers and presentations. They result in significant savings for the participating companies and real-world experience for graduating engineers.

FIRST YEAR SMART PROJECTS
Hands-on Experience Working on Real-world Engineering Projects
Engineering students at Western New England University roll up their sleeves to start acting and thinking like professionals right from the first day. They work on product development projects using key engineering tools to develop their research and analysis skills. This broad view lays the foundation for understanding how the various disciplines within engineering work together in real-world applications while also helping them to match their interests and talents with the right major.

FIRST ROBOTICS INITIATIVE AT WNE FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition is an international high school robotics competition that challenges high school students and their coaches to build a game-playing, 120-pound robot in just six weeks. To keep students on their toes, there is a new assignment each year, which means completely different tasks must be completed. Each team is given a standard set of parts and budget to make or buy specialized parts for their robot, giving everyone an even playing field, as well as room for innovation. FIRST organizes four robotics competitions each year: FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL), and FIRST LEGO League Jr. (FLL Jr.). WNE INITIATIVE: Vision: Create a nationally recognized HUB for FIRST Robotics in the Western New England region that recruits, teaches, and inspires the community. Strategy: Provide a platform for knowledge sharing, resource management, and skills development to recruit and build up community and school robotics programs. Target Audience: Western New England based K–12 schools and community-based youth outreach programs, specifically within the Springfield School Districts. PROGRESS TO DATE: As part of the larger plan to provide STEM opportunities to undeserved communities such as Springfield, WNE is dedicated to hosting tournaments that are more accessible for the local teams. In December 2018, the club hosted an FLL qualifying tournament that featured 30 teams from western Massachusetts. In March 2019, the club hosted an official FIRST Robotics Competition that brought 30 teams and more than 900 high school students to campus from across the New England region. Plans for the FIRST Robotics Initiative include continuing to host FLL events in December, FRC in March, and to expand opportunities by hosting FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) events during the January break that targets the emerging FIRST Robotics program in the Springfield area. All events are open to the public, free of charge, and family/kid friendly.
