Loyola Marymount University and Rams kick off fall semester with historic partnership.

LMU’s campus was buzzing with excitement on September 6 when the university announced it had entered into a partnership with the Los Angeles Rams. The multiyear partnership will give LMU students numerous opportunities to collaborate with the NFL team, including dedicated internships, access to case studies, mentorships and more. Rams executives will also be making in-class appearances to the university’s seven colleges to offer insight into the 2022 Super Bowl championship team.

“As we merge the rigor of academia with that of the gridiron, we empower our students to grow, learn and compete as champions,” said

LMU President Timothy Law Snyder. “Joining forces with the Rams, a team and organization that exemplifies on-field prowess and off-field astuteness, solidifies our collective excellence.”

For the Rams, the partnership will also mean the opportunity for players, coaches and staff to further their education at Loyola Marymount University.

Spreading joy and giving back through events is key for one local mom

Event planner Aisha Harris, owner of Katie’s Kreations Events, found her true purpose in the most challenging time in her life. What could have turned into a personal tragedy became a personal triumph–not only for herself, but also her family and the local community that she loves to support.

Aisha grew up in Wilmington, near San Pedro. Though her parents are back together now, her mom and dad were separated for much of Aisha’s youth, compelling her mother to work a lot to take care of her family. It was her mother’s work ethic and drive to provide for her children, while also making it a priority to give back to her community, that shaped Aisha into the woman she is today. A smart, independent soul, from a young age she taught herself how to plan events and family celebrations with flair and willingness to take charge.

“I’ve always been extremely creative, and I have always been that go-to person in the family,” says Aisha. “You know how there’s always that person in the family that kind of takes care of everything? That’s me. Also, I’ve always loved entertaining.” In fact, growing up she planned all their group vacations.

“The entire family would go on a vacation once a year. That was my grandmother’s dream. She bought a timeshare, and all of us–my cousins, aunts and uncles–would all go on vacation. Her dream was for us to see the world and for us to spend time

together,” she says.

After moving out of her mom’s house at age 18, Aisha relocated to Orange County to work in the mortgage industry. Learning her mother was spending time as a mentor to young girls, Aisha wanted to follow in her footsteps and volunteer–even if it meant braving the 405. But there was another unexpected reward at the end of that long freeway drive.

“Lo and behold, I met my husband there,” says Aisha.

Her husband is a teacher at Westside Global Awareness Magnet in Marina del Rey and also shares her philanthropic spirit. As she realized they had the same values and life goals, she fell in love.

“I love to give back,” says Aisha. “Giving back is 100 percent a part of who I am. I guess you could say it’s in my DNA.”

After the couple settled in Ladera Heights, they focused on married life and there was talk of starting a family. Then everything changed.

“I got really sick, and I actually had to quit my job in the mortgage industry. I ended up having to stay home,” she says.

A diagnosis of Lupus, followed by an additional diagnosis of Fibromyalgia about two years later caused Aisha to rethink her entire life. Luckily, they welcomed a son named Joseph, but it became very challenging to manage a baby with all the unknowns created by her illness.

“During that time, I was told by my doctors that I would never walk again. At another point, I feared I

would never work again because of all the health issues I had to deal with,” she says.

She knew she had to do something.

“I didn’t want to just lay in bed–it’s not who I am. I’d been working since I was 14 years old and being sick was the first time I had not worked,” she says.

She began volunteering at Joseph’s Westchester elementary school to plan events, which had the added bonus of creating quality time with her son.

Suddenly, the plan forward became surprisingly clear.

“I had already worked for money, and it was miserable. I couldn’t take days off, and though I had money in the bank, I wasn’t happy. I wanted to do something that I was passionate about, something that I loved, something that would get me out of bed every day,” she says.

Then her business plan practically wrote itself: “Spread joy to others and give back.” It sounds nice, but is it possible for that to be an actual career? For a strong-willed soul like Aisha, the answer was a resounding “yes!”

(continued on next page)

Page 10 • October 2023 Westchester • Playa del Rey • Marina del Rey • Playa Vista HomeTown News
I wanted to do something I was passionate about, something that I loved.
A Halloween enthusiast, Aisha Harris loved dreaming up all the elements for a wickedly perfect dinner party experience at Westchester Park featuring some of her favorite movie villains. Photos by Zsuzsi Steiner

With her health improving and a clear vision, she decided it was time to officially launch Katie’s Kreations Events, an event planning company where she could put all her skills, wisdom and experience to work. She named her company after her great-grandmother, whom she shares a middle name with. She uses the name to honor the beloved matriarch, and also give a nod to the fact that as a solopreneur, her family plays an important role in her success.

“I knew that event planning had to be my business. It brought me so much joy,” she says.

When she started Katie’s Kreations Events, her bread and butter was planning weddings–after successfully planning her own. But she’s now tackling birthdays for all ages, corporate events, religious celebrations and dinner parties.

Instead of having a signature event style, Aisha says she makes every event all about the person being celebrated, taking their needs and preferences, all the things they treasure, into consideration.

“It’s about the client. And one thing that I tell them, especially my clients who are getting married is, ‘Let’s take a breath, let’s slow down. What is it that you want?’” she says.

It’s also important to Aisha that each event is memorable.

“The thing that makes it a ‘Katie’s

Kreations event’ is that it’s an experience. I want people to feel something when they come in there, not just see it, but actually feel it,” she says.

There is a certain amount of playfulness and whimsy to most of her event magic. A talented balloon artist, Aisha often weaves in the colorful spheres in her event design, whether she’s creating an elaborate arch for dramatic effect or a fun inflatable centerpiece.

You’ve probably experienced some of Aisha’s flair for creating an

experience at some of 90045’s most popular events. As a member of the Stephanie Younger Group event team, she’s on the committees for the Fourth of July Parade and the Westchester Arts & Music Block Party, where she is instrumental in making sure everyone has a great time in the beer and wine garden. She’s just as passionate about her volunteer work, especially when it comes to the Westchester Family YMCA and its Family Engagement Committee.

“We plan events, workshops and

www.prosthoqueen.com@dr.varishaparikh

www.prosthoqueen.com@dr.varishaparikh

www.prosthoqueen.com@dr.varishaparikh

meetings that we think will benefit and help the community grow. We have done Battle of the Bands, Hula Movie Night and brought in speakers on how to listen to your teen,” she says.

A Halloween enthusiast, this month she is leading the way for the YMCA’s Halloween Spooktacular, which will have a “Monster Mash” theme. She’s hard at work coordinating with vendors, strategizing the creation of the haunted maze, planning the color scheme for her balloon designs and soliciting candy donations to add to the festivities.

If that’s not enough, she just wrapped up a summer reading program and “Bedtime Stories” series at the Book Jewel to promote literacy. She’s also starting to brainstorm plans for her second annual Corsages and Cufflinks event where students can peruse dress and suit donations to put together their dream prom outfits at no cost.

There’s no telling what she’ll think of next when it comes to combining her passion for events and donating her time to make a positive impact on her community.

“Again, my business plan is to bring joy to others, right?” she says with a laugh.

5 QUESTIONS WITH... ROBIN ZACHA

On the wall at her Westchester office, Eden Garcia-Balis has her favorite quote prominently displayed: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

This is a mantra that Eden wholeheartedly embraces in both her personal and professional life. Her dedication to championing mental health services and giving back to others has caught the attention of the Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club, which is honoring her this month with their “Sunrise Community Service Award.”

“I was really shocked when they told me they wanted to honor me,” said Eden. “I don’t think I’m in the same league as [past honorees] Jane St. John or Nancy and John Edwards, but I’m really honored that they found me deserving of this award.”

For the last nine years, Eden has been the President/CEO of Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS) a once struggling organization that is now thriving, thanks to her leadership. Using new fundraising tactics and expanding the nonprofit’s partnerships and programming has not only allowed the clinic to expand its services, but most importantly, impact

Eden Garcia-Balis

more people. AMCS is now providing more than 10,000 therapy sessions annually.

Always forward thinking, Eden is proud of her work spearheading an At-Risk Kids program at local schools and the creation of AMCS’ LGBT Affirmative Therapy Center and annual AMCS Pride event. A collaboration with the YMCA is going strong, and a popular program that helps teens connect with others, while gaining confidence and self esteem, has recently expanded.

“AMCS is my spot. Our mission matches my core values and beliefs. I plan to continue to grow programs and services where they are needed in the community,” said Eden. “This is really my dream job.”

As a Latina and the first member of her family to go to college, another passion of Eden’s is diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA). In her role as Chair of DEIA for the LAX Coastal Chamber, she is strategizing new ways to celebrate and elevate the organization’s diverse membership.

We recently sat down with Eden and asked her to share her thoughts, so here is “5 Questions With...Eden!”

Is there any organization you would like to give a shout-out to?

I’d like to give a shout-out to the Westchester Mental Health Guild, AMCS’ sister organization. Their sole mission is to raise dollars for us. They tirelessly fundraise so that we can continue to provide low-cost mental health services for those who so desperately need them. Check out their “fun”draisers, which are literally that! They include everything from Taco Tuesday events to baking demonstrations and all the proceeds benefit AMCS!

What are some goals for your organization over the next year?

AMCS regularly assesses the needs of our community and teens have been identified as a population that is suffering. AMCS has partnered with the Westchester YMCA to offer groups for youth and address the stress our young people are under every single day at home and at school. Our aim is to double the groups offered at the Y so that youth can learn healthy coping skills to deal with depression and anxiety to reduce suicide risk.

What is your favorite community event?

My favorite community event is the Westchester Mental Health Guild’s Holiday Lights Tour and Contest in Westchester and Playa del Rey. This is a self-guided tour that one can do with friends and family at one’s leisure. The tour usually lasts two weeks and is so much fun to do in one day or more! Consider touring amazing, decorated homes for a good cause. Please visit westchestermhg.org closer to December, and check out the amazing lights and decorations throughout our community.

What are some of your current successful partnerships?

AMCS partners with Helen’s Room, a nonprofit resource center for cancer patients, to provide individual and/or group therapy to its clients, helping them deal with their diagnosis and the often traumatic consequences of their treatment. AMCS also partners with another fantastic organization called Determined to Succeed, a college access and resource program for underserved students in high school and beyond. We help these youth overcome hurdles as it relates to their mental health and well-being because even when low-income, first-generation students excel academically in high school, many of them are inadequately primed for the academic rigors of college.

What are your favorite mental health tips?

I always recommend practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness is great because it helps increase our ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress and even helps with anxiety and depression. Basically, mindfulness is all about becoming more aware of where you are and what you’re doing, without becoming overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around you or letting your emotions take over. The great thing about mindfulness is that it can be done anywhere, and it can be done in minutes.

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL OF WESTCHESTER / PLAYA

Working together to improve our communities!

“If you do not take

interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools.”

How the Neighborhood Council Helps Your Neighborhood

Until recently, I didn’t know what the Neighborhood Council (NC) did. I imagine there are many neighbors in the same situation. So, here’s some basic information:

First and foremost, the NC is a group of dedicated volunteers that spend an inordinate amount of time to get current on issues that impact our communities of Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista. It is comprised mostly of residents. The goal of the NC is to provide the city council member with a pulse of how the community views relevant issues.

The NC has nine special committees that dig deep into the details of the

issues and then bring their research to the NC board for review and voting. The committees include: Airport Relations, Budget & Finance, Community Services, Community Plan Ad Hoc, Education, Government Affairs, Outreach, Planning & Land Use, and Public Safety. All are open to the public to attend; the agenda and minutes of what has been discussed is available for public to review. We encourage you to send an email to the committee members with your ideas and/ or provide a short comment during the meetings.

Want to help your neighborhood? Tell your neighbors about the NC and invite them to get involved. Simply, go onto the website: NCWPDR.org where you can sign up for the newsletter and updates.

Don’t Miss LAPD’s Trunk or Treat Event

On October 21, Los Angeles Police Department will be hosting its Annual Trunk or Treat event. Trunk or Treat is a safe, family-friendly event where local public, law enforcement agencies, and local community members decorate the trunks of their cars in October for fun and pass out candy to children from the community. This is a great opportunity for police departments to show their community support.

There are several ways you can participate: 1) decorate a trunk; 2)

provide a game and pass out candy; and/or 3) help sponsor the event. If you are interested please send in your commitment form no later than October 19, so that your information can be included on qualifying information.

For any questions or more information, please contact your contact person at LAPD Pacific Division or visit pacificboosters.org

8th Annual Westchester Arts & Music Block Party

WAM 2023 was one for the books!

The 8th Annual Westchester Arts & Music (WAM) Block Party drew an estimated 8,000 community members to Emerson Avenue on September 23 for a day full of community, entertainment and activities for the whole family.

The sounds of the Pom Poms, The Young Fables and the Francois Dean Band wowed the crowd, which had an excellent view from the Stephanie Younger-hosted beer & wine garden. The garden, which served offerings courtesy of Firestone Walker, Three Weavers, Upshift Brewing, as well as Sweetzer Cellars, Madora Vineyards and more, expanded its footprint this

year to allow for an increased capacity and more time for socializing.

Outside the garden, attendees enjoyed activities, giveaways, arts & crafts and opportunities to shop, courtesy of more than 90 vendor and community booths. Standouts included The Book Jewel’s “Food Truck” featuring fruit and veggie plushies; the Suarez Team’s obstacle course; LMU’s plethora of KXLU swag; Sugar Kane’s Bake Shop’s retro dessert spread; and the luxe offerings from Deia Candle Company.

In the Emerson Avenue Community Garden, WPNS and the Westchester Senior Center hosted activities like bubble mania and lots of arts and crafts.

“This year’s event was epic and lived up to our status as the ‘Best Community Event’ and ‘Best Charity’ event as awarded by the HTN readers’ poll,” said event producer John Sharpe. “I’ve heard nothing but positive comments from everyone who participated, and we appreciate the support of the community in making WAM a success and neighborhood tradition people look forward to year after year.”

The event’s beneficiary is once again the Westchester Family YMCA’s Teen Health & Wellness programs. While Sharpe is still finalizing the accounting from this year’s festivities, he estimates that at least $25,000 will go back to the Y.

Save the date for the 9th Annual WAM scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024!

Thank you to this year’s major sponsors: The Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation, Stephanie Younger Group, Westchester Rotary Club, Emerson Avenue Community Garden, Los Angeles World Airports and Councilwoman Traci Park. The Hometown News is also a proud sponsor of WAM.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL SCHOOLS

Schools share the great things going on at their campuses!

All are welcome at Visitation Catholic School

Visitation Catholic School is excited to share the outcome of our summer mural project. Students, staff, parishioners and neighbors were invited to pick up a paint brush and help create our new mural on campus, which boldly proclaims: ALL ARE WELCOME!

The original idea for the mural came from our DEI committee and more than 50 people participated in its painting. It was important to us that everyone and anyone who wanted to participate was invited to do so. Incoming JK students with their unpredictable brush strokes worked alongside alumni who offered a steadier hand. Members of the school

and parish staff stepped outside into the Westchester sunshine, chose the bright color of their liking, and took a “paint break” in their regularly busy day, all in an effort to complete the mural before the first day of school.

When painting the mural, one second grade student enthusiastically said it best, “Oh my gosh, everyone is going to see this and just feel so welcome!”

Guided by Catholic values, Visitation strives to create an inclusive environment where all students can feel welcome, supported and a sense of belonging. In this faith-based learning environment, the mural stands as a reminder that it is our duty to celebrate,

respect, and understand the diversity and dignity of all, addressing and confronting bias with bravery and purpose.

In Visitation’s inclusive environment, students can thrive. They are instilled with a foundation of academic excellence in such a way that will enable students to meet with success in secondary education, as well as participate in continuing education. In fact, 100 percent of our graduates are accepted to their first choice high school.

If you are interested in learning more about Visitation Catholic School, voted “Best Private School” by the

community in the HomeTown News’ “Best Of” poll, we encourage you to take a student-led tour. Our student ambassadors will guide you through their own experience at Visitation, show you our beautiful, safe and secure campus while highlighting our academic achievements. They’ll also talk to you about the many sports, club, and service opportunities.

And of course, don’t forget to check out our new mural on the way in!

Tour dates are October 19 and November 14 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Schedule a tour at visitationschool. org/tours.

“The moment we stepped on campus, Kentwood felt like a welcoming home and we knew it had to be the school for us. The community, the staff and PTO are unbeatable. “We both really love Kentwood Elementary! The teachers here are incredibly supportive. We didn’t know anybody when we first came here, but now we have a bunch of friends. We get to learn together, play together, and help each other all the time. It’s like we’ve become a big family with our teachers and friends!”–Charlotte and Avana, 5th Grade

“We love our neighborhood school, Kentwood Elementary, because it is more than just a place of education; it’s the heart of our community. It is where our children take their first steps toward a brighter future, where friendships are forged, and where the bonds between families grow stronger.

Kentwood embodies the values, traditions and spirit of our community, and it’s a source of pride and unity for all of our Koalas and their families.”–The Munger-Rivera Family

“I like Kentwood because the teachers are great. It’s also a cool school campus. I’ve made some close friendships with my classmates that I hang with outside of school!”

–Joshua, 3rd Grade

“Kentwood Elementary is the gem of Westchester. Great kids and great families. The teachers are professionals at the top of their game who dearly love children. Kentwood is a fantastic neighborhood school and we are blessed to be a part of its community.”

Nurturing hearts and minds: art at St. Anastasia

In the realm of education, Catholic elementary schools have long been celebrated for their commitment to nurturing the holistic development of students. Rooted in the values of faith, love and compassion, these institutions recognize the profound importance of an arts education in shaping wellrounded individuals. We are thrilled to share the addition of the new Monsignor Vadakin Fine Arts Room at St. Anastasia Catholic School.

Arts education at St. Anastasia extends far beyond mere creativity and self-expression; it is an essential component of a well-rounded education that fosters spiritual, emotional and intellectual growth. One of the key tenets of Catholic education is the belief in the inherent dignity of every person, and the arts provide a unique avenue for students to explore and express their individuality.

The arts encourage self-discovery and personal reflection, allowing students to connect with their innermost thoughts and emotions. Moreover, arts education promotes empathy and compassion by exposing students to diverse perspectives and cultures. Through music, visual arts, drama and literature, students learn to appreciate the beauty of diversity and the richness of different traditions.

Academically, the arts enhance

critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Students engaged in arts education often perform better in other subjects and are better prepared for the challenges of the modern world.

In our new Monsignor Vadakin Fine Arts Room, our students will have the opportunity to work in both performing and visual arts through their art and music classes. In addition, we will be utilizing the space for our

musical.

We are thrilled to announce that our students are performing “The Addams Family” on February 2 and 3 next year! We hope you will be able to join us!

Arts education at St. Anastasia Catholic School is not just about creating artists; it’s about fostering well-rounded, compassionate individuals who are spiritually and academically equipped to make a positive impact on the world.

It is a testament to the enduring commitment of Catholic education to the development of the whole person, enriching the hearts and minds of students for generations to come.

If you would like to learn more, please sign up for a tour or Panther Preview Day through our website at school.st-anastasia.org.

WISH community celebrates ‘One Team, One Dream’

This school year, WISH is doubling down on teamwork with the theme, “One Team, One Dream.” Thanks to our strong parent partnerships, incredible faculty and staff and amazing students, we are all in to provide excellence to the more than 1,100 students in our community. Already this year, WISH was selected as an innovative model program by Get Your Teach On; continued our decade-long tradition of winning multiple “Best of” awards from the Hometown News; is preparing to host education leaders from South Korea, our 14th country delegation; and celebrated with schools across the country as we “Rocked our Schools.”

WISH schools continued to rise up the rankings in the 2024 Niche “Best Schools and Districts” report that uses data from the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate academics, teachers, resources, extracurricular activities and more. WISH accolades include: WISH Elementary and WISH Middle scoring in the top 10 percent of all public elementary and middle

schools in California; and scoring in the top seven percent of all public elementary and middle charter schools in the country. WISH Academy scored in the top four percent of the most diverse public high schools in the country and in the top 20 percent of best charter high schools in the country.

During quarter 1, our elementary

students have been enjoying getting their hands dirty while growing vegetables and fruits and engaging in STEM challenges. They are also thrilled to be taking a deep dive in their projectbased learning as they prepare for their Schoolwide International Festival, where kids learn about the life, culture and traditions of countries around the world.

Our middle school students are eagerly preparing to challenge themselves as they begin their National History Day projects, with hopes of repeating our students’ past successes winning regional, state and national awards. And our more than 15 clubs like Robotics, Anime and Model UN are as popular as ever.

Our WISH Academy ninth- and 10th-graders recently bonded on an overnight retreat, and our 11th graders are excelling, leading the way with new clubs this year. They are enthusiastically preparing for the AcaDeca celebration, and our seniors are working hard to continue our school’s 100 percent college acceptance rate! On the sports front, the Girls Volleyball and Girls Flag Football team have been regularly defeating their competitors, while the Boys and Girls Cross Country, Basketball and Boys Baseball teams are preparing for their upcoming season. We are loving every minute of our “One Team, One Dream” school year! Contributed by WISH.

Education Foundation celebrates reaching half million mark in donations to local schools

The LAX Coastal Ed Foundation(LAXCEF) has kicked off the school year with a major milestone: reaching more than $500,000 in funds that have gone back to local schools since its launch in 2017! The foundation raises money through donations, sponsorships and signature events, including its annual Rock Roll & Run in partnership with LMU. The foundation distributes funds to its

20-plus schools via grants for the arts, STEM, transportation and more. A major partnership with SoCalGas provides STEM grants to K-12 programs, and last month, LAXCEF awarded nearly $50,000 to support robotics, gardening, clean energy projects, a science tournament and more.

Saint Monica Preparatory helps students make connection between classroom and the world around them

Saint Monica Preparatory, HomeTown News’ Best Private High School, welcomes students in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 12. Formerly known as St. Monica Catholic Elementary School and St. Monica Catholic High School, the school reopened its doors as one united school in 2022.

Experiential learning at Saint Monica Prep (SMPREP) charts the course for the way students solve problems, make decisions and meet life’s challenges. One of these opportunities is handson building and experimenting in the MakerSpace classroom and the Mariner Ocean Research Institute, where students carry out multi-year, collaborative research related to coral reef restoration.

To help students make the connection between the classroom and the world around them, the Upper School offers international travel such as a “Catholic Highlights of Italy” tour, a STEM trip to the Galapagos Islands, Spanish immersion in Costa Rica and a Kenya tour serving religious and social outreach organizations.

For grades sixth through eighth, domestic travel includes an annual east coast trip to Washington, D.C. and New York City, as well as excursions to Kern County with the Cesar Chavez Foundation and Pali Mountain. The

youngest learners explore the Los Angeles area.

SMPREP launched a Japanese Exchange Program last year, welcoming its first students from Koyasan High School in Mount Koya, the birthplace of Shingon Buddhism.

In turn, several SMPREP students traveled with Japanese Teacher Shiho Yoshida to Mount Koya for an immersive two-week education. In addition to Japanese, SMPREP offers Spanish and American Sign Language to grades 9 through 12. For grades TK

through 8, Spanish is part of the core curriculum.

The Visual & Performing Arts (VPA) program at SMPREP is planning Arthur Miller’s classic play “The Crucible” for its fall production with opening night on Friday, November 3. “Mean Girls” will be the Spring musical, adapted from the popular film. Last year, the VPA put on impressive productions of both “Clue” and “Into the Woods,” as well as talent showcases throughout the school year.

For athletics, the Upper School’s

18 teams compete in CIF’s Southern Section. Congratulations to all Mariners who set records last year as boys basketball, girls basketball and boys cross country all won league championships, while girls cross country were runners-up and football was a semifinalist. Multiple Mariner student-athletes went on to compete at the college level this year in basketball, golf, track & field and volleyball.

New this year for SMPREP, grades three through eight added both cheer and cross-country programs, joining basketball, flag football, soccer, track & field and volleyball. Last year, the Mariners were the CYO flag football champions for the first time ever. The Core Prep program offers gifted athletes in middle school the opportunity for training specific to their sport during their elective periods.

The strong SMPREP community allows teachers, coaches and counselors to form long-standing connections with students who are seen, accepted and known by name. Saint Monica Prep will hold a TK-12 Open House on Sunday, November 5 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Learn more about its academic, art, athletic and faith formation programs at saintmonicaprep.org or follow @saintmonicaprep on social media. Students develop the tools to succeed beyond Vistamar–excel in college, do meaningful work, be engaged with their communities and sustain fulfilling relationships. Colleges and universities appreciate our intellectually engaged and

culturally competent graduates.

Playa Vista’s Argo Navis: rethinking education

Argo Navis is a private, Spanishimmersion school that offers a strong academic, progressive curriculum to students from preschool through eighth-grade. The school is researchbased and provides real-world learning opportunities daily through field trips and field studies.

Argo Navis was founded with a mission to break away from the traditional school model, providing individual attention to every student. This translates into students engaging daily in a PBL educational model, a Spanish Language Immersion curriculum, multi-weekly field trips that utilize the city of L.A. as an additional campus and small class sizes (8:1 student to teacher ratio in Kindergarten through fourth and 10:1 student to teacher ratio in fifth through eighth-grade).

At Argo Navis, the goal is that students find “joy in learning” by connecting learning to personal experiences. The administration and faculty aim to discover how each student uniquely learns by valuing

their passions and curiosities and by implementing individual learning

plans for each student so that they may succeed through their own

measure of success.

Curriculum is guided by California Common Core, Next Generation Science, World Language and Computer Science Teachers Association standards.

“It’s time to enact change in education to serve the diverse needs of our students who are facing an evolving world.” explains Argo Navis Head of School, Ryanne Plaisance. “We are not serving our children with large classroom sizes where a student’s success is measured by the mere ability to memorize data. At Argo Navis, we provide opportunities that foster an intrinsic desire to solve problems, think creatively and master curriculum so students will be able to navigate the future with confidence and innovation.”

Argo Navis was founded in October 2015 in the Mid Wilshire area. Over the course of eight years, the school has expanded to over 160 students and opened a second campus in Playa Vista in 2022.

A year of new beginnings for Westchester Lutheran School

The 2023-2024 school year is underway and marks another year of service in our beloved Westchester/ Playa community. The church, established in 1943, created the school as a way to bring Christian education to the community. More than 70 years later, Westchester Lutheran continues to touch the lives of hundreds of families, year after year, with its small class sizes, rigorous academics and welcoming environment.

This year also marks new beginnings for Westchester Lutheran School (WLS) with new leadership and new teachers. Mrs. Jane Engler, a veteran teacher, and alum of WLS, is now at the helm as principal of the elementary and middle schools and is excited to work and collaborate with the amazing teachers and students. It is her goal to see the school grow by providing classes taught by experienced teachers who are subject experts in their fields and creating an environment that embodies a whole-child approach for growth.

“Westchester Lutheran has a legacy of preparing students well for the rigors of high school, and we want to continue that tradition, as well as nurture our

students so they are grounded in their faith to become Christian ambassadors in the community,” says Principal Engler.

One way the school has done this is by bringing back a former and respected WLS middle school English teacher, Mr. Fleming, to not only teach English Language Arts, but to also incorporate the new one-to-one student-issued Chromebooks for the students to learn how to interact with

web-based curriculums. This mirrors the expectations for students in high school and helps prepare them for the upcoming transition.

Other new teachers include 18-year veteran social studies and technology teacher Mr. Houston, and Ms. Gonzalez, our schoolwide Spanish teacher. There is also a new team of TK-first grade teachers Mrs. Bozzalla, Mr. Lake and Ms. Chhabria. We are excited about their collaboration in developing the

whole child, while also teaching the traditional standards through creative lessons and project-based learning.

Westchester Lutheran offers an Early Learning Center for ages 0-4. Until recently, it was led by the wonderful Mrs. Shirley Becker, but after several years of dedication to the preschool, she has handed the reigns over to Ms. Tanya Squier, another veteran early-education teacher and alum of WLS. It is her goal that the Early Learning Center provide an environment that encourages young children to grow in their ability to learn, share, express themselves and make sense of the world around them. They do this at their own pace in a caring and nurturing environment, one that includes knowing they are loved by God.

From all of us at the Early Learning Center, elementary and middle school, we welcome local families to participate in our WLS community events and invite you to see for yourself what a wonderful school Westchester Lutheran is! Learn more by visiting our website at wlcs.org, or by scheduling a tour by calling (310) 670-5422.

Beginner fitness questions answered

Opinion: Many fitness beginners hesitate to ask questions, but I have always believed this is the best time to get answers. This month, I am going to answer three of the most common beginner fitness questions.

Q. How often should I work out with weights? There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often you should work out with weights. The answer depends on your time availability, personal preferences and goals. Two is a great place to start as most major medical organizations recommend two fullbody workouts per week. By reaching for this goal, you will strengthen your muscles and your bones. This is also a good goal if you want to see progress quickly–usually in less than a month and often in just a few weeks.

This does not mean you cannot work out more than twice per week. If you consistently exercise twice per week and would like to add more time, I would recommend adding a third day. Some fitness enthusiasts even work out with weights four times per week. Of course, there may be good reasons to stick with a consistent schedule; your personal calendar may make more

time dedicated to exercise difficult to maintain. Some people might even find adding another day makes them more likely to quit. This is where personal preference can be very important.

If one workout is all you can manage right now, follow that plan and look for a chance to add in a second day somewhere down the line. Any time dedicated to fitness can provide benefits, but you will not progress as you would with two or three workouts.

Q. What purpose does a warmup serve and is it necessary before a workout? Warmups generally range between five to 10 minutes. At our studio, we use an eight-minute warmup using only bodyweight exercises and moving stretches.

Think of a warmup as a transition from an inactive physical state to one where you will be exerting more effort than you do in your normal day. A good warmup should lightly work all the muscles of your body. Warmups take your body from a “cold” state to a warmer one. They help get more blood and oxygen to your muscles. This physically prepares you for your workout and reduces injury risk. Warmups also prepare you mentally to get moving. The warmup signals to

your brain that you are getting ready to exert yourself. This can improve concentration and increase exercise results.

Warmups can even improve flexibility and mobility. If you want to get nerdy about it, Google “dynamic stretching” and you will find preworkout stretches that improve muscle flexibility. You can also turn on almost any sporting event and see players doing their own versions of dynamic stretches to improve mobility and performance before the game. Warmups are a must and only take a few minutes, make you safer and increase the quality of your activity.

Q. Should beginners adopt the “no pain, no gain” approach? While progress does require effort, the “no pain, no gain” mantra probably does more harm than good. When people hear this quote, they often think Navy Seal workouts are the only way to achieve gains. The reality is getting stronger requires simply challenging your muscles at an appropriate and safe level. Navy Seal-type workouts are inappropriate for most people and are not necessary. If you have not lifted weights in a while, start light. After several weeks of exercise, increase

weight slightly. Repeating this pattern over time is the formula for long-term success.

Taking a “no pain, no gain” approach may lead to injury as many people also live with a variety of joint challenges. Beginners often have a hard time distinguishing between the effort needed to lift a weight safely versus pain that might pose a health risk. Going too hard, too fast is a recipe for injury. When you finish a weightlifting exercise, you should feel fatigued, but you should not feel overwhelmed. Exercise should always enhance your life and never detract from it.

If you are a beginner, I encourage you to find an exercise program you can follow consistently. Do not compare yourself to others. Simply do your best. Best of luck on your fitness journey!

Before you start your fitness routine, consult your doctor.

Have the strength and willingness to heal

Opinion: Halloween is right around the corner. Gardens are full of pumpkins, gourds and fall squash. In the circle of life, another autumn season is emerging. Nature is connected in a rhythm of birth, growth, death and rest. Autumn is the time when the growth cycle is complete, produce is picked and preparation for the next stage of the circle happens. Reflecting on natural cycles is more poignant to me this year as I consider how life transforms–sometimes bringing joy and at other times bringing sorrow. During this past year, friends and family have encouraged me to express more of “me” in my writing and my work. I listen to them, letting their words mull in my thoughts. I know, as with all life, there must be growth, change and letting go. Healthy relationships demand careful listening and consideration of the words of those cared about. Connections are deepened when all involved in a conversation openly and consciously pay attention, giving considered responses. Just because another person suggests an action does not mean it must be taken. Often what is said must be measured and the empty chatter must be sorted out. In my imagination, I picture the sorting as removing weeds from a garden in order to let the squash and pumpkin plants grow.

Weeds represent controlling statements, demeaning and derisive language, half-truths, lies and anything resulting in me feeling of little worth. What remains are ideas to be weighed to determine if they align within me. Sometimes there are good suggestions that do not fit with who I am; therefore, I can let them go along with the weeds. Frequently, suggestions come from extroverts who might not understand the needs of a highly sensitive introvert, such as me.

Close relationships also require expressing emotions and feelings.

Over my lifetime, my sister, brother and I have expressed many emotions and feelings–many of them were not warm and fuzzy. There were many emotionally strained years. Yet underneath the troubles were the seeds of caring for each other. We tracked what was happening in each other’s lives. Cultivating healthy relationships can require expressing hurt and finding emotionally safe ways to share. It can require growing connections without a clear pattern to follow. We slowly learned through trial-and-error safer ways to communicate. It required each of us to be willing to let go of past hurts and individually do the work necessary for each of us to see each other through new eyes and to hear each other through new ears. The model we did have was my mom’s constant love for us. We slowly learned to verbally tell each other, “I love you.” Of course, during our ups and downs, it took time to be able to accept the words and allow them to reside within our bodies. Expressing, seeing, and feeling acceptance and

caring is crucial in building respectful and loving relationships.

While each of us were cultivating a new way of being with each other, COVID happened. Early during the pandemic, we began having family Zoom meetings. It was important to me for my mother, my siblings and my nieces to have a healthy connection with one another, especially as my mother aged. For many years I have been my mother’s care-helper; taking her to doctors, places she wished to go and filling in where her abilities were declining. My communication with my brother and sister became more important to keep them informed about my mother’s health.

I am thankful my sister, brother and I cultivated our connection with each other when we did. Last autumn, my mom’s care requirements increased. While my siblings do not live nearby, I was able to facilitate additional Zoom calls with our mom to give all of them as much contact as possible. I was pleased they were both able to make some trips to Los Angeles to see her. We were able to successfully function as a decisionmaking team when we started hospice care for her in March. In July she had her 98th birthday and two weeks later she died.

I am thankful my mom was aware my brother, sister and I did the needed work to establish a healthier relationship. My mom was one of the people telling me to include more of “me” in my work and writing. It is with love I am doing so in this article.

I am also thankful my siblings and I can support one another in our grief. Death is part of nature’s rhythm. I know this and believe that death is a birth into another consciousness. However, the loss still hurts. I have experienced many trainings about grief, one was David Kessler’s Grief Educator Certification course. Early in David’s career he worked with grief pioneer, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. I believe David would be the first to tell you that training about grief is very different than the experience. Intellectually, I review in my mind Kübler-Ross’ stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, meaning); realizing that the stages happen in no particular order. Grief is a force of nature and has no timeline. I am open to whatever it has to teach me.

My wish is for you to have the strength and willingness to heal relationship difficulties with those you care about. The natural cycles of birth, living and death happen. Living is more meaningful when you experience and give love to those who matter in your life.
