There's high demand for brick and block layers in the industry. Get your start at New Zealand's only bricklaying school.

Learn how to design, price and build features such as fences, retaining walls and pergolas. Get hands-on with timber, concrete and stone. Learn to use hand and power tools and other equipment. Practise your skills on real projects in the community.

In our purpose-built workshops you will learn how to interpret plans, consult with clients and work on a range of practical projects. Programme overview

Building Carpentry*

WelTec’s Certificate in Carpentry is your first step towards gaining a building qualification. You will learn in purpose-built workshops and on WelTec’s own building site. This includes building an actual house which is sold upon completion.

Work towards becoming a qualified carpenter. Our programme is designed for those working as a carpentry apprentice. Benefit from practical tutorials, workshop instruction and regular on-site assessment by WelTec tutors. You will be guided through the theory requirements with part-time study offered in the evenings, and be able to put the theory into practice on your building site, supported by our teaching staff.

On the site, you’ll learn about framing, roofing, cladding, internal linings, fitting windows and hanging doors. You will also gain an understanding of the health and safety issues in the building industry, and develop your knowledge of building codes and regulations. This programme will provide you with a mix of theory and practical skills to get you started in the industry. Career opportunities Career opportunities include a carpentry apprenticeship or employment within the construction industry on residential or commercial building sites.

Programme overview > Receive on-site work experience in timber floor framing, flooring and wall framing > Install plasterboard linings and thermal insulation materials > Apply levelling methods and set out residential buildings > Interpret construction drawings and prepare quantity lists Further study options New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Main Contract Supervision) (Level 5) New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Level 6) with strands in Construction Management Career opportunities Work as a carpenter, be a contractor, start your own business or become an instructor. From here you may progress onto construction supervisor, foreman, site manager and/or project manager. Learn how to professionally prepare surfaces and paint interiors and exteriors. Gain knowledge of how to interpret building drawings and specifications. Learn how to erect scaffolding. There is also the opportunity to practise your skills on the houses we build or by working on a community project or other full-scale work.

Advance your decorating skills by learning wallpapering, spray painting and colouring techniques. Gain safe worksite skills so you're ready to work in industry.

Students will learn safe worksite practice from preparation to finishing a paint system in a practical setting.

Use your work experience to reinforce the learning you complete in this programme. You might also get to work on one of the WelTec homes, a community project or other full-scale project work. Programme overview

Learn how to use hand and power tools, as well as erect scaffolding. Opportunities exist to apply your skills on the houses we build or by working on a community project. Grow your knowledge and learn how to interpret drawings and specifications for building work. Understand safe worksite practice in plasterboard preparation, through to finishing off plaster board installation. Work on one of the WelTec homes or other full-scale projects. Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying* Level 3 Start: March and June 2017 Length: 24 weeks*, full-time Campus: Petone - Cuba Street Start your plumbing career. Gain the knowledge and practical skills necessary to enter an apprenticeship in the plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying industries. Career opportunities You may find employment as an apprentice in the plumbing, drainlaying and gasfitting industries. The skills gained in this field are also in high demand in other areas such as heating and ventilation, civil work, heat pump installation and repair or other labouring roles. Electrical Trades New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering* Level 3 Start: March and July 2017 Length: 1 year, full-time Campus: Petone - Cuba Street Start your Electrical Trades career. Take the first step towards gaining an electrical qualification and entering the electrical industry. You will learn the hands-on practical skills and theory that an electrician needs in their daily work.

Entry criteria 10 credits NCEA level 1 numeracy and 10 credits NCEA level 1 literacy.

This programme will provide you with broad-based training in all aspects of the industry.

This programme may help you gain entry into the industry as an apprentice to a qualified electrician, or employment as an appliance service technician, electrical fitter or electronics service person. Avenues of employment as a security installer or retail electrical worker also exist.
