Automotive, Panel and Paint Love cars, trucks and other vehicles? Our students enjoy getting hands-on with cars and machinery in our refurbished workshops.

Work with light or heavy vehicles, electrical and electronics, or in panel and paint. You’ll learn your trade working with a range of vehicles. Plus you’ll learn in new facilities. Our automotive workshops have benefited from a $3 million upgrade – including dedicated project spaces and new collision repair and refinishing workshops.

Apply your new skills in a real garage or workshop as part of the course. You’ll gain actual work experience and the opportunity to make a fast start in your automotive career.

We are introducing new Level 3 programmes in 2017. The latest qualifications available in New Zealand.

Become an automotive engineer. You’ll learn foundation skills in your first year. In year two, you’ll choose to specialise in Light Vehicle, Electrical and Electronics or Heavy Vehicle. Your third year will require you to be working in the trade so you’ll attend night classes and block courses. Work experience needs to be completed as part of this course.

With strands in Collision Repair or Refinishing

Choose collision repair or refinishing. Gain foundation spray-painting and collision repair skills. Learn in our professionally fitted workshops and through work experience. Our industry partners have helped us develop the perfect learning facilities for panel and paint training.

Collision Repair You’ll learn how to repair damage on a vehicle, apply body filler and weld panels.

Specialisations (Year 2 and 3)

Refinishing Develop skills to prepare a vehicle for painting. You’ll cover masking, priming and filling through to painting methods, colour selection and colour matching.

Light Vehicle Learn essential skills in car maintenance and repair.

Entry criteria

Electrical and Electronics Learn fundamentals in diagnosis and repair of electronic/electrical control systems on vehicles.

Heavy Vehicle Learn fundamentals in diagnosis and repair of electronic/electrical control systems on vehicles.

10 credits NCEA Level 1 numeracy and 10 credits NCEA Level 1 literacy – at least 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing.

International students – minimum IELTS (academic) score of 5 with no band score lower than 5. *New qualification in 2017. If you are already studying, you continue with the qualification you enrolled in.

Entry criteria NCEA Level 1 with 12 credits in literacy and 12 credits in numeracy, or equivalent knowledge and skills.

Class 1 New Zealand Drivers Licence - minimum Restricted licence.

A pre-entry interview may be required.

International students – minimum IELTS (academic) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5. *The new Level 3 Automotive will be launched in 2017, and the Level 4 will start in 2018. If you have already started studying, you will continue with the qualification you enrolled in.
