A walk with Mayor DeLoach

n a sunny Savannah fall day, I caught up with Mayor-elect Eddie DeLoach near Forsyth Park to have a light-hearted chat sans-politics. After 6-months of migraine-inducing campaigning and over 25 debates our deal was that we wouldn’t talk politics—and we didn’t! I’m completely infatuated with Deloach’s devilishly well styled hair. We spent a good five minutes on Eddie’s hair and he claims he doesn’t do much to it—I’m not buying it! He stands a strapping 6’2ish or more and is a mild mannered man who swears his younger brother Jimmy got all the charisma; but after firing off a series of questions to break the ice, I beg to differ. A modest, but humorous gentleman, Eddie claims to pale in comparison to his wife and children as a piano player, stating that “[They] suffer through my playing.” Although he was lead singer in a band called The Ambassadors which originated in his church— who knew? He’s an avid wine lover and his favorite is a merlot that he gets during his family’s bi-annual European vacations. Though, he says he also “loves a good Tuesday wine.” “That’s any wine that’s cheap. Because who goes out on a Tuesday? Nobody, so you run to the store and grab a cheap bottle of wine and that’s your Tuesday wine,” he proclaimed, in that classic stuff my dad says spirit.

Interview by Alicia Scott Photography by John Alexander As our stroll got started in the name of “Tuesday Wine,” we made our way to the main path in Forsyth. Deloach made many attempts to engage passers-by, but it was clear that his is not yet familiar across the masses of Savannah just yet. The awkward, unfamiliar nods of acknowledgement met us until the course of our day would suddenly change. An adult man whizzed by us, fully dressed with luggage in tow. And then another. “What is that all about? Why are men pulling suitcases from this far into the park? Do you think they’re homeless?” I agreed that must be the case, but I myself was not 100 percent certain either. We walked a little farther and I spotted two men lunching on a bench and suggested we ask them. Much to our unsurprised the answer was, yes, the men at Forsyth toting around luggage are homeless. “The shelters in the city only provide a place to sleep at night for the men to sleep. And during the day they have to wander around with their luggage,” one the men said. Eddie was clearly struck by this information and he inquired further about the city’s shelter before the men on the bench finally realized who he was. -Continued on Next Page WELLF EDSAVA NNA H. “Hey, you’re the new Mayor?” said one of the gentlemen.And that was all it took for Eddie DeLoach, Mayor of Savannah to come alive. Handshaking ensued, followed by more camaraderie and questions. I stood by and observed the interaction between Deloach and the two gentlemen and what I saw was very refreshing. The “homeless man” appeared to have “struck a chord” and Eddie continued a lengthy conversation with our two serendipitous comrades. He seemed genuinely concerned about an adult men pulling luggage through the park on a weekday. He was bothered and concerned by this in-person encounter Savannah’s homelessness-- in a sincere way.

As we continued on our walk, Eddie debriefed me a bit on the rest of the conversation with the men. As we segued into another topic, he started his response with, “Well, I’m a Republican…” in an apologetic tone and posture. I graciously cut him off and said, “You know it’s okay to be a republican, you don’t have to apologize or explain it away like it’s something bad.” “Well, yes, I kind of do, “he replied. Enter, guilt.

This wasn’t the campaign trail. He wasn’t in an office or on a soundstage preparing to regurgitate answers to a list of pre-screened questions; it was just Eddie, myself and a park full of strangers. For the first time, I personally witnessed a politician react in sincere, human way. It was a moment I had hoped to capture during our interview, though I could never have imagined it would be so moving.

Had his personal encounter with our city’s homeless men, affected him so much that he subconsciously felt guilty for being a wealthy Republican? I don’t know for sure because I’m no psycho-analyst; however, what I did see was a very compassionate response to a problem that is supposed to make people feel uncomfortable. Homelessness, in your face, should get under your skin and make you feel exactly the same way it made Eddie Deloach feel that day. He was prompted to help and he did so in the best way he knew how, using the resources he had in that very moment.

By the time we started to continue on our way, Eddie and the two men were having a hearty chuckle. They shook hands and, although they were clearly employed (they were wearing uniform shirts) Eddie reached into to his pocket and gave both men his business card. “If you ever need anything, a job, or have any questions, or even know anyone that needs a job give me a call. Serious, give me call. That’s my personal mobile number, that’s my personal card.” Both men were pleasantly surprised and appreciative. It was a moment of pure humanity for someone who lives many miles “above the fray.” It triggered, what I can only call, a bit of wealth guilt in Eddie—based on how the next part of our talk went.

The average person doesn’t own a company through which they can dole out jobs to a needing public; but I’m guessing the average company owner doesn’t learn about homelessness first hand, and then pass out their personal mobile number to be given to people who may need jobs. I could be wrong! I put my hand on Eddie’s shoulder when I said, “It’s okay to be a republican…” And on that day, during our walk through Forsyth Park, Eddie Deloach, the Mayorelect of Savannah, the man with the relentlessly impeccable hair, proved to me that I was right—it is perfectly okay to choose whatever political party you want to affiliate with because it has nothing to do with what’s really inside your heart.

ow celebrating seven years in Savannah, Mountainfilm on Tour is once again bringing a whole world of incredible filmmaking to the coastal empire. 2016 is shaping up to be as inspiring as ever for the festival, complete with a fantastic kick-off event at the Trustees Theater. The event includes a Tesla car show on Broughton Street, showcasing just one of the many ways we can reduce our environmental impact on the planet; along with stunning images of endangered species projected onto the SCAD Library across the street. Previous screenings of the film have featured a similar light show, projected onto such world monuments as St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basilica in Rome and the Empire State Building in NYC (pictured next page). -Continued on Next Page

A feature-length film will also be presented in person by its Academy Award winning director, Louie Psihoyos and the Tesla racecar driver featured in the film, Leilani Münter (pictured below). Both will be on hand to answer questions from the audience after the film. The film, Racing Extinction, and the director, Louie Psihoyos, have been piled with praise for the message of hope and urgency they have delivered to audiences around the world. Racing Extinction is an actionthemed, James Bond-esque exposé on the plight of some of our planet’s most endangered inhabitants. These are animal species that are on track to disappear, unless we step up and do something about it. And that’s just what makes Racing Extinction such a great film; it doesn’t just depict a dire ecological situation, it challenges viewers to make a change in their lives so that we can make the world a better place and save these majestic creatures.

This film is an excellent example of the Mountainfilm’s mission, poised at the crux of entertainment, information, and action. Here’s your chance to take in some great filmmaking, learn about important causes, and find out what you can do to help! But the action doesn’t stop there. Mountainfilm on Tour has a whole weekend lined up with a handpicked selection of shorter films that cover a huge variety of engaging cinematography and important topics. These films feature individual run times of anywhere between five and twenty minutes apiece, and each one presents bite-size nuggets of information and inspiration on topics as diverse as Rwandan genocide and an ebola task force, to big-wave surfing and a skateboarding cat. Films are shown Friday evening, with a matinee and evening session on Saturday, all at the Trustees Theater. There’s something for everyone at Mountainfilm on Tour, including a Saturday matinee of kid-friendly fare

beginning at 2pm. This “Movies that Matter” segment is aimed at motivating younger audiences. Both filmmakers and subjects of the films will be on hand to take questions and provide insight into their work, and the work you can do in your own life to support important causes. Would-be World-Changers can chat with film subject Dr. Tyrone Hayes, on his rise from poverty in rural South Carolina to his groundbreaking research on the effects of agricultural chemicals on amphibians on Friday night. Adventure-junkies can get their fix from a talk with filmmaker Kenny Laubbacher and cyclist Jedidiah Jenkins on Saturday evening, as they discuss documenting Jenkins’s epic bicycle journey from Oregon to the southern tip of Patagonia. The activism-inclined should be sure to catch the Coffee Talk with Filmmakers & Special Guests, where experts and directors will field questions related to the films at 9:30 am Saturday at the Kennedy Pharmacy on Broughton Street. Afterwards, cyclists can pump the pedals with the Savannah Bicycle Campaign, as they get a tour of downtown Savannah on the Tell-U-Ride Bike Ride. The film screenings will continue with the festival finale showing at 7:00p, Saturday evening.

Many see it as a chance to put the entire past year behind them to make room for a healthier and better version of themselves. This is a time of opportunity and holds a strong potential for change. Thankfully, you don’t have to look too far to discover that there are a multitude of ways to change for the better.

At the Bazaar, you’ll find everything from jewelry, to new and vintage clothing, handcrafted home goods, to homemade health and beauty products. It’s characterized by a judgement-free, festival atmosphere, where you can dive into the fun headfirst, experiencing and even participate in a diverse array of artistic performances, including: fire poi (fire dancing), face painting, poetry, and all types of live music.

The January Savannah Bazaar offers a plethora of options for change in 2016. Health and wellness vendors along with many other local businesses will line the landscape outside of Jelinek Creative Spaces during the late afternoon of January 30.

In addition to the wide array or retail vendors, here’s a sampling of some of the new exhibitors that will be participating in the NEW YEAR/NEW YOU theme for the January Savannah Bazaar. All of these vendors are prepared to discuss the different options available so you can gather all the information you need to make healthy decisions (or resolutions) for the new year.

For the uninitiated, Savannah Bazaar is a familyfriendly marketplace that showcases Savannah’s local artistic community and musical talents. It takes place on the last Saturday of every month, from 3-8pm. Founded under the premise that the community needed a way to shine a spotlight on the often overlooked side of Savannah, the Bazaar has grown over the past two years into a dazzling spectacle of creative expression, as well as a great place to purchase amazing, locally crafted artwork and other handmade goods and gifts. 18 | W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

What’s an event like this without YOGA! There will be 15-20 minute demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Ashley Dodd at Revolution Yoga has been a certified yoga teacher for five years. Revolution is Savannah’s only certified Jivamukti Yoga Affiliate Studio. Open to all skill levels, Revolution features Jivamukti yoga and hot yoga. The practice focuses on causing the least amount of harm to anything and everything, including the earth.

“It’s lifestyle yoga,” Dodd says. “Coming into a yoga studio purely for exercise is an amazing way to get in here, but I encourage people to come with an open mind. We really want to emphasize the ideas we introduce that not only benefit your physical being but can benefit your spirituality and mental health. We want to get you thinking about how you can take the teachings from the class and apply them to your life off the mat.” Lynn Geddes of Kidding Around Yoga will also be offering a yoga demonstration for children. Kidding Around Yoga offers fun ways to keep children interested in meditation, breathing practices, relaxation, yoga poses, and stress management. Their mission is to change the world one peaceful child at a time. Newkore Kinetics is a third yoga option. Owner Elizabeth Newkirk offers personal yoga and pilates. Her practice centers around movement. She can even come to your house! “I think the most important thing is giving a new practice as much commitment as possible,” Newkirk says. “There’s a rhythm to it that builds up over time and you won’t grow if you don’t commit.”

In addition to the yoga demonstrations, there will be other presenters including, Peter Brodhead of Brighter Day Natural Foods. Brighter Day, a natural, locally owned food market has been offering healthy options since its inception in 1978. Grace McWilliams of Relax Savannah will offer insight into her beginner Tai Chi class. McWilliams deconstructs moves and focuses on weight distribution, balance and breath alignment. With the coordination of mind and body, tranquility and ease of motion can be achieved. Harmonic Infusions offers both herbal Chakra Tea blended with organic and wildcrafted herbs. Owner Amy Spadafora-Thompson has degrees in iridology, herbal medicine and naturopathy. She is the only iridologist in the Savannah area. “Environmental toxins are part of the reason the tea is so important,” she says. “We need to raise our vibration within our bodies on a physical level. The Georgia Lowcountry Chapter of the American Herbalists Guild stress the importance of connecting plants with people. Using herbs as medicine, the guild welcomes people of all walks of life who are interested in learning more about the healing properties of herbs. Jeffrey Schifanelli is a licensed acupuncturist and nationally accredited Chinese herbalist. Schifanelli specializes in sports injuries and chronic pains. He owns Physique Chinese Medicine Clinic, soon to be open on Price St. Core Therapy is Savannah’s premier women’s health and pelvic rehab physical clinic.The clinic, located on the southside, treats incontinence, pelvic, abdominal and back pain. Ferrante Frazier is a certified holistic nutrition and health practitioner. He encourages people to use natural means of restoring balance in their bodies without the use of herbs and supplements. “We show people how to restore high levels of energy,” Frazier says. “We teach them how to get regular exercise, how to get proper rest and we also help them with emotional balance and get them away from addictive habits. ... We teach them how to maintain nurturing relationships with freedom from violence.” Art Rise and Loop It Up will be present at the Bazaar to offer hands-on art activities for children and for parents. Loop it Up and Art Rise are just a few of the nonprofit community organizations involved in this month’s Bazaar. The African American Health Information and Resource Center will be available for answering questions about the program specifically designed to improve the health and wellbeing of African-Americans in Chatham County. The group offers health screens, children’s services and job training. The Savannah Bicycle Campaign, a nonprofit organization advocating for bicyclists will be having a bike sale - New Year /New Bike! Solidarity in Savannah will be back again as well. Their mission is to reduce youth violence and to empower and educate families. Attending the Savannah Bazaar can help solidify your New Year’s resolutions. Use this as an opportunity to have fun, socialize and embrace change as you carve a path that makes a positive difference in your life as well as your community.

Heal Thyself: A Profile of the Institute of Personalized Medicine Article by Coco Papy | Photo by Christine Pendergrass

am admittedly a quick fix type of gal - the type of person who would rather take three pills for a headache rather than admitting that the jawclenching and staring at a computer screen for hours on end with no break might actually be the problem. Root cause, smoot cause - I always side with the easier route of swallowing the pretty green pill and not actually changing any long-formed and perhaps ill-advised habits. Being a terrible example of an adult aside, it’s my own bad behavior that peeks my interest in the Institute of Personalized Medicine, a Savannah based medical practice that caters in patient-centered medicine, specifically focused on diet and lifestyle, founded by Dr. Mary Kay Ross. Board Certified in emergency medicine, Ross worked in a trauma since she graduated and eventually at Memorial Hospital for eight years till her own medical issues began. Diagnosed with asthma and psoriatic arthritis, Ross went from doctor to patient almost overnight and began searching relentlessly for what would treat her--not just her symptoms. Her own journey on both sides of the coin helped push her to start a small private practice in 2008 that would eventually become the Institute of Personalized Medicine. “People aren’t always getting better and I’ve seen a lot of the “pill for the ill” scenario” Ross tells me over the phone. “But it’s often a bandaid for the symptoms---we aren’t looking at the root cause.” The main difference Ross believes defines her from other practitioners and even her own past practice is that she is looking at the entirety of the patient--not just the issue at hand. Ross believes that it is about the search for the root causes of a disease and to truly help, you have to correct the underlying issue to achieve true healing. She also is a firm believer in the fact that no two patients are the same, so what works for one person doesn’t always work for someone else. Thus, a practice that creates personalized blueprints for health. “I spend two hours with my patients. In medicine, insurance companies pay the doctor on volume. A doctor has to move so many patients in a day to be paid, so you can’t spend an hour to two hours for each patient. The model we have created doesn’t solve this problem but it does help it.” It seems like a radical notion, but should the idea of evaluating the whole person through crucial elements like diet and exercise seem so radical? “What we are doing is not so alternative” Ross chuckles. “It truly is what medicine should be-we are taking the time to learn about our patients and

If definitely requires a lot on the patient’s part as well.” I feel my own creeping bad habits tapping me on the shoulder as if to say, “Nah, you can totally just keep doing that thing where you drink coffee all day long and then complain about a headache. No problem there.” The idea of taking a couple of pills to fix the short-term seem much less appealing than thinking long-term. “We require patients to enter into a relationship with us and they have to change things and work on things and answer the problems at hand” Ross tells me. “If they aren’t willing to change it, this doesn’t work. It’s just as much responsibility on the patient as it is ourselves.” In other words, you gotta heal thyself. “This is an important aspect of medicine--how to eat and how to have a healthier lifestyle.” Ross says. She is excited for 2016 as they are finishing up an in house kitchen, where they will be working with staff dietician Christy Meyers to show patients how to create easy and healthy meals, as well as offering mindfulness classes, massage therapy and more practices that help promote all around balanced health. “When we are creating programs that address the whole patient, we are talking about the mind, body and spirit.” Beyond preventative medicine, Ross is looking at whole body healthness-a way of living that is about working to create an all around healthful life, rather than meeting a problem only when it happens--certainly something that makes my own short-term fixes seem a little more questionable. “Ultimately we are about healthy people staying healthy and sick people getting well.” Ross says as we finish our conversation. “This is a big movement and an important aspect of medicine--how to eat and how to have a healthier lifestyle.” Meet Dr. Ross at the January 30th Savannah Bazaar [SavannahBazaar.com] or at The Southern Women’s Show, February 26-28 [SouthernWomensShow.com].

Pelican Point School Garden hosts a special visitor Written by Rhonda L. Barlow, MPH, RD, LD, CLC Their faces were alight with surprise and disbelief. The preschool students excitedly lined up to wait their turn. They tried so hard to be quiet and not wiggle. Their smiles said it all – Mr. and Mrs. Clause were visiting their school garden! This exciting visit from the South Pole was made possible because of a partnership with the Georgia Port Authority. Santa’s visit is one of many moments of joy and delight that occur daily in the Port Wentworth Elementary Pelican Point School Garden. The garden was built in the school year 2013-14, using a Georgia SHAPE grant award. Georgia SHAPE is an initiative, started by Governor Nathan Deal, with the goal of improving the health and fitness of the state’s young people. Along with a network of partners, the Georgia SHAPE program offers schools the opportunity to obtain grant money for school-site health-related projects and it also offers technical assistance to teachers. Chandler Thomas Dennard, a music teacher at Port Wentworth Elementary and the Pelican Point School Garden Club president , took over maintenance of the school garden this school year and with assistance from the school garden vice president Susanne Root, engages the school’s parents in various garden club activities once a month. These activities range from building stepping stones used on the garden path to routine garden maintenance. Edible plants growing in the school garden include tomatoes, sweet peppers, sage, mint, thyme, and other various herbs. The Pelican Point Garden is used regularly in various ways to enrich the student’s school day. Mr. Dennard recounts, “I bring my students out to the garden to teach them songs about fruits and vegetables. Other classes eat lunch in the garden on a regular basis and the teachers talk to them about the plants. ” As he showed off the peaceful garden space, he pointed out, “The art teacher made the garden signs and the parents made the stepping stones one morning during a garden club meeting.” In preparation for Mr. and Mrs. Clause visit, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Savannah State University Chapter, partnered with the school for a work day.
