Irises, fields of purple, have taken the place of honor in my garden. I am stunned by how swiftly the lilac, the lilies of the valley, the wisteria have come and gone. It is equally surprising to me that I am sitting here writing a letter for spring 2012 when, minutes ago, our fall, 2011 books went to the printer. In my last catalogue I voted that we all reduce the number of titles we are publishing and publish them better. This we are doing in this catalogue. Bill Wurzel’s Funny Food is one of the nicest books I will ever publish. Its niceness, funniness, charm, wit, and integrity grow straight out of the fertile ground of its creator, an ex-art director, a jazz musician and a husband for fifty years. That doesn’t begin to tell you about how loving and utterly adorable he is. For one thing, in the fortynine years of his marriage, he made breakfast for his wife Claire every weekend. Every breakfast was a work of art that he improvised in the kitchen with whatever four basic food groups he found in the fridge. He assembled each plate and she disassembled it. Just ate it. The art just vanished until Claire said, Bill, you should photograph them. And, then she said, let’s take those four food groups to the schools and teach children how to start the day, creating with their food and then eating their artwork. Over the years, that is what they have done. The Little Big Cookbook for Moms is just a natural for us. Everyone in our little firm has children. We all love to cook. We are making some brilliant food books and we have already done The Little Big Book of Comfort Food. It is time for us to focus on the little guys. Let’s feed them well at every age. Let’s pay attention to organics and intolerances. Let’s all have a good time. Let’s not spend too much money but let’s be healthy. The Art of Video Games: From Pac-Man to Mass Effect by Chris Melissinos opens at the Smithsonian

American Art Museum in Washington in March and runs through September 2012. Chris created the exhibit and the book. He set up a website and more than 119,000 fans voted on which eighty games should make the final cut from a pool of 240 proposed choices in various categories, divided by era, game type, and platform. There is something very contemporary about it and also strangely retro. Pac Man, really? s pr i n g

Thanks for coming back.

The Art of Video Games From Pac-Man to Mass Effect By Chris Melissinos and Patrick O’Rourke Introduction by Mike Mika

In the forty-year history of the video game industry, the medium has undergone staggering development, fueled not only by advances in technology but also by an insatiable quest for richer play and more meaningful experiences. From the very beginning, with the introduction of the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, countless individuals became enthralled by a new world opened before them, one in which they could control and create, as well as interact and play. Even in their rudimentary form, video games held forth a potential and promise that inspired a generation of developers, programmers, and gamers to pursue visions of ever more sophisticated interactive worlds.

As a testament to the game industry’s stunning evolution, and to its cultural impact worldwide, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and curator Chris Melissinos conceived the 2012 exhibition The Art of Video Games. Along with a team of game developers, designers, and journalists, Melissinos selected an initial group of 240 games in four different genres to represent the best of the game world. Selection criteria included visual effects, creative use of technologies, and how world events and popular culture influenced the games. The museum created a website and invited the public to help choose the most popular games; after almost four million votes coming from 175 countries, eighty winners were selected and are featured in the exhibition and in this book. The Art of Video Games offers a revealing look into the history of the game industry, from the early days of Pac-Man and Space Invaders to the vastly more complicated contemporary epics such as BioShock and Uncharted. Melissinos examines each of the eighty winning entries, with stories and comments on their development, innovation, and relevance to the game world’s overall growth. Visual images, composed by Patrick O’Rourke, are all drawn directly from the games themselves, and speak to the evolution of games as an artistic medium, both technologically and creatively. Also included are interviews with some of the industry’s most influential artists and designers, from early pioneers such as Nolan Bushnell to contemporary innovators including Warren Spector and Tim Schafer. From Pac-Man to Mass Effect, The Art of Video Games makes a compelling case for games to be viewed not just as mere play, but as richly textured, compelling experiences that have crossed the boundary into culture and art. As Melissinos writes, “Our children are being born into a world in which the digital and physical collide, and video games are the expressive voice of that collision.” The Art of Video Games presents the evolution of that voice, as it becomes ever more powerful.

little big cookbook for moms

The

250 of the best family recipes By Alice Wong and Natasha Tabori Fried The Little Big Cookbook for Moms was created by two busy moms who were searching for a family cookbook that

spoke to their needs: they wanted the best of everything for their kids and they wanted an emphasis on delicious, healthy food, with something decadent every now and then. They wanted food everyone in the family would love but also wanted to keep it simple. They needed ideas for lunch boxes, planning ahead, and freezing, advice on how to stretch one recipe into multiple meals, and how to take advantage of fresh ingredients when they are in season. Their ideas and notes to each other grew into this chunky book, brimming with favorite recipes and classics that are easy and convenient, interesting and fun, and always have health and nutrition in mind. The Little Big Cookbook for Moms contains more than 250 great recipes for families with children of all ages, with additional variations, ideas, tips, and nutritional information. It pays attention to first meals for little ones, favorite meals for picky palates and those with food sensitivities, and more adventurous meals for everyone. Among its pages are lists of what always to keep in the freezer, pantry, and refrigerator, and charts with suggested timing for cooking dried beans, grilling meats, and roasting and steaming vegetables. It has a selection of slow-cooker recipes and meals to store in the freezer when it’s possible to plan ahead. And, for inspiration, a list in the back of the book offers a month’s worth of diverse entrée and side pairings. The Little Big Cookbook for Moms is truly a cookbook for every family who cares about healthy, easy, AND delicious eating and is the reference moms will use for many years as their little ones grow.

Funny Food 365 Healthy, Silly, Creative Breakfasts By Bill & Claire Wurtzel

They’re easy. They’re silly. They’re healthy. They’re clever. They’re artistic. They’re delicious. They’re fun. They’re a great way to start the day. One break fast at a time, Bill Wurtzel is determined to make you laugh and eat and play and laugh some more. Riffing over the years with oatmeal, eggs, apples, and nuts, it is finally ours to share… Not since Joost Elffers’ Play With Your Food has food been so ridiculous and so endlessly diverting. Parents and children will giggle through breakfast. Teachers and students can laugh some more making snacks or desserts after lunch. This is a book filled with nothing but engaging spontaneity and simplicity that makes you say, “I can do that.” And, you can...the consequences are yummy.

Really, who doesn’t like to play with food? Bill Wurtzel, a jazz guitarist, has been making these plates for his wife, Claire, for as many years as they’ve been married. Now he is turning a hobby into an art form with a social message. His goal is to discourage obesity by inspiring children—and adults—to improve their eating habits by creating meals that are not only nutritious, but also fun. It’s your turn… These are not your mother’s smiley-face sandwiches. In Bill’s world, carrots turn into airplanes; boiled eggs into jugglers, and pears into guitar players. As gracefully as Picasso’s ceramic plates found endless form so do Wurtzel’s portraits which seem to grow out of almost anything—cheerios and bananas; lox and bagels; oatmeal, blueberries, and strawberries. Sometimes you think he is portrait artist and you could swear you just saw Sigmund Freud emerging from a pear or Shakespeare growing out of an apple. Sometimes the plates are just plain fanciful. “Your breakfasts don’t have to look like they’ll hang in the Louvre,” he says. “It’s the gesture that counts.” But it sure looks like he riffed on Matisse’s paper cutout dancers with a papaya. Bill does snacks, too. Funny Food will contain both recipes and how-to photographs where relevant.

Wurtzel also has been conducting workshops for children at Public School 188 on the Lower East Side, teaching them to use their imaginations to improve their health “rather than just putting lettuce and vegetables on their trays.”

Claire Wurtzel has been an educator for 40 years. Her focus is on supporting teachers who work with students struggling with learning and/or behavior difficulties. Claire was on the faculty of Bank Street Graduate School for 17 years, where she taught courses and chaired the Department of Special Education. She works with teachers, administrators, families, psychologists, librarians, and museum educators both nationally and internationally. Recently, through Claire’s relationships with NYC public school principals she and Bill have begun launching healthy breakfast workshops in the schools. Claire and Bill Wurtzel were married 1961, have 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren, and live in New York City.

Bill Wurtzel was an award-winning art director by day and jazz guitarist at night since 1960. In 1989, he switched to a music career and occasional consultant to his daughter’s ad agency wurtzelinc.com. For many years he played with the Count Basie Countsmen, Bill Doggett, and Jimmy McGriff among other jazz legends. Bill performs weekly at HENRYS, and the American Folk Art Museum (see billwurtzel. com ) Bill is a founding director of the Jazz Foundation of America, which helps jazz and blues musicians in need jazzfoundation.org. He and his wife of 50 years, Claire, live on the Upper West Side in New York City.

New York City landmarks were born during two most stylish and dazzling decades: the 1920s and 1930s. The Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the Waldorf-Astoria—as well as dozens of lesser-known but equally stunning office buildings and apartment houses grace this edition. Richard Berenholtz’s photographs of the finest examples of New York City’s art deco architecture are accompanied by literary text from the era.

This awe-inspiring visual odyssey through one of the world’s greatest treasures is an extraordinary publishing achievement. Beautifully photographed by renowned photographer Jon Ortner, this deluxe, numbered edition showcases over 200 images, including 100 panoramas and 10 gatefolds that open to four feet. Shot in over 60 locations across a 130,000-square-mile area, the images cover national parks, national monuments, state parks, wilderness areas, and tribal lands, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Petrified Forest.

Inscribed & illustrated by Sam Fink • $500.00 ($645.00 CAN) • 45 loose folios, each 22" x 16-3/4", in a 23-1/4" x 18" x 1-1/4" clamshell box; includes a separate folio with the English translation and a print signed and numbered by Sam Fink • Limited to 1,000 signed and numbered copies • ISBN 978-1-59962-040-4 ART/RELIGION–JUDAISM www.welcomebooks.com/exodus The Book of Exodus was originally conceived by artist Sam Fink as a gift to his family, now living in Israel. Fink created forty original watercolor skyscapes, one for each chapter in the book of Exodus. This extraordinary text details the Jews’ enslavement in Egypt, their harrowing journey with Moses out of bondage, and the new laws established for them by their God. In these folio prints Sam Fink reaches his family across an ocean—and readers around the world—with breathtaking images that speak to this powerful story. Each watercolor is meticulously hand-lettered with the Old Testament text, in Hebrew and in the Jewish Publication Society’s 1917 English translation. Housed in a blue cloth-covered clamshell box.

It’s a beautiful thing, our country’s Constitution, and this extraordinary limited edition gives it its due. Nonagenarian Sam Fink’s unadorned, classically simple calligraphy and exquisite illustrations—originally done in pen-and-ink in 1987 and newly painted in color for these imposing folios (15" x 22")—are approachable and profoundly affecting, underscoring what an elegantly simple document our forefathers had the wisdom and forethought to craft. Housed in an exquisite deep clamshell box (16-1/4" x 23-1/4") and lined in blue Saifu cloth, it also contains a limited-edition print of the entire Constitution, newly calligraphed onto one sheet, signed and numbered by Sam Fink. It is a worthy addition to any home.
