Publisher’s Note

This catalog contains 79 titles published over the years by Welcome Books and 6 titles we have been fortunate enough to distribute. The great majority of these books have reprinted a number of times and many have collected a stunning variety of awards. Collectively, they represent our commitment to beauty, to laughter, to a sense of awe, and to a love of family, art, and the passion of creators. You will find hope and celebration here, rarely judgment or negativity. We have chosen, time and time again, whether the subject is food or education, photography or popular culture, to focus on the great with the idea that expanding what is thrilling is ultimately more valuable than exposing what is flawed. Better for our spirits, too. We have published incredible writers, some of which are: Leonard Cohen, Veronica Kavass, Maya Angelou, Christopher Cerf, Annie Dillard, A.M. Homes, Donald Friedman, Arianna Huffington, Jack Kornfield, Katrina Fried, Stephen G. Bloom, Alice Waters, Andrew Zimmern, and Jessica Theroux as well as some profound photographers of which these are a few: Amy Arbus, Paul Mobley, Jeannette Montgomery Barron, Michel Tcherevkoff, Barbara Bordnick, Peter Feldstein, Douglas Gayeton, Scott Pasfield, Thomas Sanders, Alfred Wertheimer, Catherine Ledner, Jon Ortner, Richard Berenholtz, Eric Meola, Jay Ben Adlersberg, Galen Rowell, Wes Walker, Roman Cho, and Carolyn Jones. Artists Sam Fink, Richard Stine,

and Bill Wurtzel practically became family and then there are the entrepreneurs, for lack of a better word: Nancy Randolf Greenaway, Chris Melissinos and Marsha Heckman. To say that we have fallen in love with each would be true. Their hearts, gifts and visions have contributed to our intense delight in the world, and they have helped explain, with profound thought and deep insight, why it goes around. They have a talent for connecting us to our best selves and we want, forever, to be in their company. This catalog is organized by category because that is probably best for retailers but, of course, books are like people and often defy being characterized as only one thing. Why, for instance, should Dance Me to the End of Love be under “Art” and not also under “Love” or “Music” or “Poetry” for that matter? So, we made an extended index at the back where titles reappear in as many categories as seem appropriate. We have also made title suggestions for various holidays (way too obvious!). We have shared with you our awards (although keep watching our awards site as we haven’t yet received awards for 2013 titles). In all cases, we have given you individual websites, where you can access much, much more. You might want to start here first, where the most beautiful bookshelf I know, lives: www.welcomebooks.com/books

“Being in love and making art are both creative acts that require ingenuity, the ability to capitalize on failures, sense of humor and all sorts of other things. Artists in Love is a transfixing account of the way that artist lovers create their worlds of work and love.” — Laurie Anderson, composer, musician & performance artist

For centuries, great artists have been drawn together in friendship and in love. In Artists in Love, curator and writer Veronica Kavass delves into the passionate and creative underpinnings of the art world’s most provocative romances. From Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe to Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, Kavass’ intimate and daring text provides a generous glimpse into the inspiring and sometimes tempestuous relationships between celebrated artists throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. From poetic beginnings to shocking endings (and vice-versa), the various dimensions of the artist couple archetypes are ceaselessly explored. Some partnerships yield astonishing parallel bodies of work, as with Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, others are enduring and collaborative, like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, yet others are adoring but explosive, such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Essays revealing what compelled these dynamic artists to partner, how their pairing influenced their work, and why their love may have faltered or endured, are accompanied by lush illustrations of their art and iconic images of the couple by celebrated photographers such as Irving Penn and Robert Capa. The first major visual book to explore this subject in such epic scope, Artists in Love is a revelatory and riveting journey into the hearts and minds of our greatest artist couples.

China 3,000 Years of Art and Literature Edited by Jason Steuber 240 pages, 10 1/4" x 13 7/8" 117 full-color images Includes 8 horizontal and vertical gatefolds Hardcover, $60.00 ($69.00 CAN) ISBN 978-1-59962-030-5 www.welcomebooks.com/china Art / History / Travel – Asia – China

A window into a world of extraordinary beauty and mystery, China: 3,000 Years of Art and Literature reveals the glorious history of this ancient and fascinating culture. In 240 pages and more than one hundred full-color images, this volume traces China through its tales and stories, plays and poetry, painting and objects— from ancient divinations incised on bovine scapula, to modern “people’s literature” spawned from the revolution, to Song dynasty silk scrolls. China juxtaposes text and images in chronological order within each of eight thematic chapters: Birth & Life, Nature & Environment, Love & Family, Mind & Memory, Food & Drink, War & Politics, Religion & Spirituality, Death & Afterlife. Among the literary selections are the famous Book of Songs, the epic Dream of Red Towers, the complex dramatic masterpiece Romance of the Western Chamber, and pieces from Confucius, Laozi, Du Fu, and Su Shi. Works of art from the ancient to the contemporary accompany the text, by artists including Li Cheng, Liang Kai, Qiu Ying, and Xu Bing. The unique pairings in this anthology will enrapture as they educate, capturing a broad audience—from sophisticated appreciators to eager novices of Chinese history and culture. 4

Dance Me to the End of Love Poem by Leonard Cohen / Paintings by Henri Matisse Edited by Linda Sunshine Dance Me to the End of Love is a deliriously romantic song by Leonard Cohen visualized through the sensual paintings of Henri Matisse. While Cohen’s lyrics give tribute to the miracle of love and its healing power, Matisse’s bold, colorful paintings inspire a sense of completeness. Originally recorded on his Various Positions album and featured in Cohen’s anthology, Stranger Music, this poetic song is gloriously married to the artworks of Matisse, perhaps the greatest artist of the twentieth century. “I had this dance within me for a long time,” Matisse once said in describing one of his murals. Dance Me to the End of Love is the perfect book for art lovers, song lovers, and all other lovers, too.

Poem by e.e. Cummings / Paintings by Marc Chagall Edited by Linda Sunshine may i feel said he by e.e. cummings is an ecstatic tribute to the power of love and a humorous salute to the mating rituals between men and women. Originally published in Cumming’s 1935 No Thanks collection, may i feel said he is one of the poet’s most original and best-loved works. Marc Chagall’s floating lovers and acrobats are the perfect complement to Cummings’ whimsical poem. Chagall’s unique work always reflected the artist’s fascination with the many facets of love. “Is it not true that painting and color are inspired by love?” he wrote in 1973, at the age of 85. The twenty-three diverse paintings in this collection include many works that have rarely been seen by the public.

e.e. cummings (1894–1962) has been called a major American poet of the middle 20th-century. A complete anthology of his work, E. E. Cummings: Complete Poems, 1904–1962 was released in September of 2013 by Liveright Classics. Marc Chagall (1887–1985) is one of the most outstanding lyrical painters of modern times. His work is featured in the public collections of major art museums around the world. An exhibit called “Love, War, and Exile” at The Jewish Museum in New York is displaying over 30 of his paintings through February 3rd, 2014. 6

Love’s Exquisite Freedom Poem by Maya Angelou / Illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones This stunning book pairs the lyrical grace of Maya Angelou with the exquisite art of Edward Burne-Jones. Angelou’s poem of love’s transcendent power finds a striking, sensual complement in Burne-Jones, a star of Britain’s Aesthetic movement. BurneJones’ depictions of angels in various guises offer love, redemption, and guidance. His contention that art reveals “a light better than any light that ever shone” is tempered by Angelou’s naturalism and earnestness. The combination is an enchanting exploration of the redemptive quality of love and the unbidden pleasure of emotion. Dr. Maya Angelou (b. 1928) is one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. She is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. Her most recent novel, Mom & Me & Mom, was published in 2013 by Random House. Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833–1898) was a British artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, who worked closely with William Morris on a wide range of decorative arts. Recently, the Birmingham Museum in England loaned 53 of his works to museums throughout Japan.

Over the Rainbow Lyrics by E.Y. Harburg / Paintings by Maxfield Parrish Very few songs have so taken hold of people’s hearts and imaginations the way E.Y. “Yip” Harburg’s “Over the Rainbow” has—stirring in anyone who hears the words a wistful desire for a trouble-free life. Harburg’s lyrics partner perfectly with the color-infused paintings of Maxfield Parrish, whose work appears to generate an inner light, evoking a feeling of warmth and exuberance. Brought together in this gorgeous book, these words and images result in an elegant evocation of the human spirit, particularly in times of difficulty. E.Y. “YIP” HARBURG (1896–1981) wrote more than 500 songs, many of which accompanied the music of Harold Arlen, who was the composer for “Over the Rainbow.” MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870–1966) is widely considered to be one of America’s greatest 20th-century illustrators. During his lifetime, he was extensively reproduced in books, art prints, and magazines.

Shape of My Heart marries the haunting lyrics of pop icon Sting with the mesmerizing images of Pablo Picasso—two artists who share the uncommon ability to make the world see itself in a new light. While Sting’s lyrics about the intricacies of love elevate popular music into previously uncharted territory, Picasso’s paintings of women are unlike that of any other artist. Together, their words and images—like all messages from the heart—make the perfect gift of love. STING (b. 1951) has recorded 8 albums with The Police and 11 solo albums, and won 16 Grammy awards. He is also an activist with Amnesty International and the Rainforest Foundation. Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973) was one of the seminal artists of the 20th century. His work is featured in museums around the world. In 2013, an exhibit of his work called “Picasso Black & White” was on display at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. 7

Meet Blackie, the stubbornly motionless equine hero of Christopher Cerf and Paige Peterson’s delightful and touching biography-in-verse. This (mostly) true tale tells the heart-warming story of a horse who made standing stock-still a lifelong endeavor— while becoming a champion rodeo horse, a tourist favorite at Yosemite Park, a legendary environmental crusader, and the beloved mascot of one of America’s most beautiful towns, Tiburon, California. Magically illustrated with Peterson’s paintings, Blackie is destined to become a children’s classic in the tradition of Munro Leaf’s Ferdinand the Bull and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. The playful, clever rhyming text will charm adults and children alike as it quietly delivers an important message about appreciating and preserving peacefulness around us. CHRISTOPHER CERF is an author, composer-lyricist, and television producer. Cerf played a pivotal role in the creation and production of “Sesame Street,” most notably as a regular contributor of music and lyrics. He has won 8 Emmy Awards and 2 Grammy Awards. PAIGE PETERSON is a noted and widely exhibited artist who has been selected for membership in the prestigious Guild Hall Academy of the Arts in East Hampton, New York. As a child in Belvedere, California, she often fed Blackie apples, carrots and sugar cubes in his pasture. She has recently illustrated Jesse Kornbluth’s edition of “A Christmas Carol.” A Senior Vice President of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Paige lives and works in New York City and Belvedere, California.

American Teacher Heroes in the Classroom

“I am excited to see the work of such an inspiring group of teachers celebrated in American Teacher. Our country cannot thank teachers enough for the work that they do.” — Salman Khan, Founder & Executive Director of Khan Academy

By Katrina Fried Foreword by Parker J. Palmer KATRINA FRIED has previously written Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing the World One Nonprofit At a Time, and American Farmer, and has edited or produced numerous award-winning and bestselling titles including: Artists in Love, The Oxford Project, Gay in America, The Last Good War, Slow: Life in a Tuscan Town, Afield, Cooking with Italian Grandmothers, Primal Cuts, and On The Street. AMERICAN TEACHER Heroes in the Classroom By Katrina Fried Foreword by Parker J. Palmer 224 pages, 10" x 11" 72 full-color photographs Hardcover, $45.00 ($45.00 CAN) ISBN: 978-1-59962-127-2 www.welcomebooks.com/americanteacher EDUCATION / PHOTOGRAPHY – Portraits Distributed for JAK Books

Celebrating educators who go far above and beyond the call of duty, American Teacher shines a spotlight on one of the most unsung yet critically important professions in the world. Katrina Fried has interviewed and written the stories of some of our nation’s most passionate, innovative, and decorated teachers from kindergarten through twelfth grade, selected from public and public charter schools across America. The result is an inspiring collection of narratives that takes us into the classrooms of fifty extraordinary educators whose creative and unconventional methods are transforming the lives and futures of their students. Profiles of teachers are accompanied by heartfelt letters from students and captivating portraits by distinguished photographers from all over the country. Fried introduces us to heroic teachers such as Stephen Ritz, a special education teacher in New York City’s South Bronx, who uses sustainable agriculture as a tool to engage and inspire his neighborhood’s most at-risk students; Sharon Patelsky, a physical education teacher in Florida, who sneaks math, vocabulary, and even science skills into her high energy movement classes; and Rafe Esquith, whose fifth grade class in inner-city Los Angeles is widely known for its masterful annual performances of Shakespearean plays and has even been the subject of a PBS documentary. These are some of our true classroom heroes—the men and women responsible for molding and preparing our children to meet the challenges of the 21st century. In the face of increasing class sizes and insufficient resources, many of our teachers are finding progressive and engaging solutions to institutional problems and changing the world, one child at a time. By their example, we see how great teaching can and does create a lasting impact. Hear their stories, see their faces, learn about their methods for success, and join us in honoring their passion and sacrifice. 10

“Everybody has a life. Everybody has a sensibility. Everybody has yearnings. Everybody has a cause to plead. And everybody has a camera. It takes an intelligence bold as Amy Arbus to turn these universal commonplaces not just into works of art, but works of insight.”

— Richard Avedon

Between 1980 and 1990, over 500 of photographer Amy Arbus’ impromptu and edgy portraits of New Yorkers appeared in the Village Voice’s monthly fashion feature, “On the Street.” The column’s mission was to document the city’s most adventurous trendsetters as they went about their lives, but Arbus’ photographs tell much more than a style story. From the irreverent to the gritty, every one of these images is a potent tribute to self-expression. Taken as a whole, they reflect an era of contradictions, urban individualism, and raw creativity. On the Street features 72 of the most revealing photographs taken by Arbus on the city’s fashionfertile sidewalks. Arbus’ ubiquitous lens captured the most influential style-makers, from The Clash on the set of Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy and Madonna the same week her single “Everybody” hit the charts, to Anna Sui, Joey Arias, Phoebe Légère, and countless other local artists, actors, costume designers, shop owners, musicians, make-up artists, graffiti artists, and downtown scenesters. By Michel Tcherevkoff / Preface by Ferruccio Ferragamo Introduction by Diane von Furstenberg Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy debuts an outrageous imaginary collection of botanical shoes and accessories created by photographer and artist Michel Tcherevkoff. Each virtual shoe and handbag is amazingly crafted out of numerous photographs of a single plant or flower. The result is both organic and cutting edge. Art, attitude, romance, and nature combine in this garden of flirtatious footwear. Bearing witty and whimsical names and captions to complement their playful design, every shoe and handbag has a story to tell—or secret to keep. Fashionistas will find everything they need, from the “Pre-Nup,” a slipper made from the virginal white lily, to the “Miss Tress,” the sole of adult discretion, to the “Tally Ho,” a handbag fit for a fox hunt. This playful, one-of-a-kind collection is packaged in a chic pink plastic slipcase with a round peek-a-boo window, and includes eight printed vellum tip-in sheets. MICHEL TCHEREVKOFF pushes the boundaries of imagination for advertising, editorial, and corporate clients including Canon, EMI, Valentino, Missoni, Prescriptives, Maybelline, and L’Oreal. He continues to explore new technologies utilizing a variety of software programs to create his photography based artworks. 13

Secret Landscapes of Flowers, vol. II

Photographs by Barbara Bordnick BARBARA BORDNICK is an internationally renowned fashion and portrait photographer whose work has been published in major magazines including Harper’s Bazaar, Life, Vogue Francais, The New York Times Magazine, and GEO. She has had one-woman shows in the U.S. and Europe, and her work has been included in exhibitions around the world. Ms. Bordnick’s work is in the permanent collections of The International Center of Photography, The Portland Museum of Art, The Polaroid Collection, and The George Eastman House as well as in many private collections, and she is a widely sought-after teacher and lecturer.

“The colossal blooms of internationally known photographer Barbara Bordnick seem to burst from the pages of Searchings: Secret Landscapes of Flowers, stirring your senses with bright, sinuous, tantalizing shapes.” — O, The Oprah Magazine, April 2003

Barbara Bordnick has that rare and unique eye that reveals the wonders and beauty of flowers in a most astonishing way. Two years after the 2003 publication of Searchings, Secret Landscapes of Flowers, Volume I, she created this new body of work in glorious color, which is both architectural and sensual. She has refined her perception of what is, at heart, a flower’s basic nature: its infinite variety of being. Her intimacy with the flowers is dazzling. Reflected through the lens of her camera, the images are as much about perception—and the photographer’s sense of her own existence—as they are about the flowers themselves. With each image, Bordnick quietly underscores the unlimited nature and form of flowers, while celebrating their unique and exquisite beauty.

In the photographic and literary traditions of Richard Avedon’s In the American West and Studs Terkel’s Working, American Farmer celebrates the living spirit of our heartland through the faces and voices of the men and women that sustain it. Featuring more than 200 vivid portraits and 45 interviews with farmers across the United States—from cattle ranchers to avocado growers, American Farmer tells the inspiring stories of the true stewards of our land. When photographer Paul Mobley set out to capture the soul of our nation’s agricultural communities, he encountered an enduring rural culture that remains rooted in the principles of tradition, family, integrity, and hard work. Crisscrossing the country, from Alaska to Maine, he and his camera were welcomed into the homes of hundreds of farm families, many of who later graciously shared their personal histories and private thoughts with writer Katrina Fried. Visit after visit, Mobley came to know the independent farmer’s spirit from both behind the lens and across the dinner table. The result is the first portrait collection of modern American farmers ever published to reach so deeply and gracefully into its subject. This moving portfolio is accompanied by anecdotes and memories in the farmers’ own words that are both a testament to their enduring hospitality and a glimpse into the hardships and joys of a quickly disappearing way of life. 15

Staff Meals from America’s Top Restaurants

A Selection of the Good Cook Book Club For every dinner service, there is a staff meal. Family-style celebrations prepared by chefs for their crews, the meals are never on the menu, but are designed to show appreciation, provide energy for the evening, and please even the pickiest palate. Marissa Guggiana has traveled the country to bring you behind-the-scenes profiles of the country’s top restaurants, and explore the tradition of the staff meal. Each night, sous chefs, line cooks, waiters, busboys, dishwashers, and managers all gather to eat, socialize, and plan the night ahead. The concept is simple: a well-fed staff is a happy one. The best chefs in the best restaurants take their limitations—affordability, ingredients, and time—and transcend them to create meals worthy of their compatriots. Guggiana has taken the most mouthwatering of these dishes—from Paul Liebrandt’s Lamb Shepherd’s Pie to Zingerman’s Beer and Cheese Soup—and translated them for the home cook. Each entry includes restaurant profiles, chef Q&As, dining out tips, restaurant tricks, and cooking techniques.

Sometimes the plates are just plain fanciful. “Your breakfasts don’t have to look like they’ll hang in the Louvre,” he says. “It’s the gesture that counts.” Funny Food also includes recipes and how-to photographs. Bill and Claire Wurtzel have brought the Funny Food Workshop to schools, festivals, and venues all across New York, and an exhibition to the Chelsea Market in Manhattan.

In this first-ever photographic survey of gay men in America, stereotypes are laid to rest and an intimate, honest picture of contemporary gay life is revealed. Photographer Scott Pasfield traveled 52,000 miles across all fifty states over a three-year span gathering stories and documenting the lives of 150 gay men from all walks of life. At turns joyful and somber, reflective and celebratory, each narrative and image in Gay in America is an enlightening look into the variety of gay life in our country. Each of these men is unique and whole, complex and fallible. There are farmers, writers, lawyers, artists; there are fathers and husbands, activists and business men. Some are successful, some are struggling, some are political, some are wounded, and some are deeply content.

“Sprawling, moving, and lively, Scott Pasfield’s Gay in America shows what being a gay male looks, sounds, and feels like in today’s USA. An inspiring cross section.” — Michael Musto, The Village Voice 30

“Carolyn Jones’ The American Nurse is a beautiful and moving testament to the soulful, selfless caregiving that nurses work hard to provide. A book filled with love, determination, and hope, it showcases the rewards that come from dedicating oneself to the needs of others.” — Theresa Brown, New York Times columnist “Bedside” and author of Critical Care

In The American Nurse, photographer and award-winning filmmaker Carolyn Jones relays the personal stories of 75 nurses from across the U.S. through quiet photographs and deeply moving text—and in doing so gives voice to millions of women and men playing heroic roles every day in America’s healthcare system. It is at once an ode, a celebration, and a vote of gratitude to these extraordinary caregivers. While books, television shows and journalistic articles by and about doctors abound, nurses have remained mostly unsung—until now. In The American Nurse, these healers generously share their wisdom, their stories, and their lifetime of experience in the field of medicine. Never before have nurses been so beautifully and poignantly honored as they are in this eye-opening and touchingly intimate portrayal. The American Nurse introduces us to a broad spectrum of nurses, with specialties that range from neo-natal to end-of-life care, from AIDS to cancer. They hail from big cities and small towns, tiny clinics and mega-hospitals. Their stories are as varied as the nurses themselves, yet a common thread of compassion always remains. 31

THE LAST GOOD WAR The Faces and Voices of World War II Photographs by Thomas Sanders Text by Veronica Kavass Introduction by Hampton Sides 224 pages, 8 1/4" x 11 1/2" 160 full-color and black-and-white photos Hardcover, $45.00 ($53.00 CAN) ISBN 978-1-59962-085-5 www.welcomebooks.com/lastgoodwar Photography – Portraits / History – US / History – Military – WWII

“With heartfelt, perceptive variety, the remarkable portraits that distinguish this book reflect the range of their subjects’ experience. The concise text recounting each veteran’s reminiscences amplifies the impact. The combo hits home like a one-two punch.” — World War II Magazine

A selection of the History Book Club and the Military Book Club World War II remains one of the most galvanizing and defining events in the history of America. Seemingly overnight, the nation unified behind a singular cause. An entire generation’s identity was forged, in part, by what many still refer to as the “last good war.” Sixty years later, a young photographer named Thomas Sanders traveled the country photographing hundreds of World War II veterans, including Louis Zamperini, the hero of Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling Unbroken, and the subject of a 2014 film of the same name directed by Angelina Jolie. The more he shot and the more he listened, the more captivated he became by their memories. “They are a living record of an incredibly historic time,” Sanders says. “We have so much to learn from their experiences.” The Last Good War is a chronicle of courage and hardship, sacrifice and determination. The harsh reality of combat tempered by tender, poignant moments. The overwhelming anguish of lost brothers-in-arms alongside stories of enduring friendships. They came from everywhere and for every reason—from the young woman pulled from her college and covertly trained to break German submarine codes, to the soldier who stormed Hitler’s castle home. As told to writer Veronica Kavass, the stories of these pilots, soldiers, marines, and sailors provide a unique window into American history.

“This is not a sentimental retelling of America’s role in WWII. These are personal stories, told first hand. There is grit and blood, fear and heroism.” — Chicago Tribune 32

Elvis 1956 Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer Introduction by Chris Murray Essays by E. Warren Perry, Jr. and Amy Henderson

“Wertheimer shot what are now some of the most iconic images of the man who would be king. It’s said that no other photographer was ever given this type of access and it led to intimate and unvarnished images of Presley…” — The Today Show

ALFRED WERTHEIMER began his career in 1956, publishing his work in such magazines as Life and Paris Match. When RCA Victor asked him to photograph Elvis in 1956, Wertheimer turned the assignment into a unique opportunity. No photographer ever again was allowed the same intimate access. ELVIS 1956 Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer Introduction by Chris Murray Essays by E. Warren Perry, Jr. and Amy Henderson 128 pages, 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" 72 tri-tone photographs Hardcover, $29.95 ($29.95 CAN) ISBN 978-1-59962-073-2 www.welcomebooks.com/elvis1956 MUSIC – ROCK / PHOTOGRAPHY – Celebrity

When Elvis Presley walked on stage in 1956, time stopped—and then exploded. The earth shook on its axis and the beat of everyday life was jolted. In an instant, mainstream America’s veneer of cultural complacency evaporated. It was the year Elvis released his first record, made his first television appearance, and started his movie career. It was the year he became a star. Alfred Wertheimer, then a young freelance photojournalist, was there to document the extraordinary transition. In Elvis 1956, you will find images that are a national treasure: a unique visual record of one of the most influential performers of all time. Including photographs of Elvis never before published, this book contains the first and last unguarded look at the rock n’ roll icon, featuring images of him in every aspect of his life—from the stage and with the fans, to the recording studio and his family home. A stunning photography book, Elvis 1956 has also served as the exhibition catalog to the national Smithsonian exhibit “Elvis at 21,” which opened in 2010 in Los Angeles and continues to travel the globe. Developed collaboratively by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, and the Govinda Gallery and sponsored nationally by the History Channel, “Elvis at 21” showcases Wertheimer’s lavish photographs and captures a defining moment in the life of rock n’ roll’s most enduring figure. 40

“Dog Gone It...I can’t believe how cute these illustrations are.”

J.C. Suarès (1942–2013), born in Egypt and a veteran of the U.S. Army paratroopers, was the first art director for the New York Times Op-Ed page, a post through which he radically influenced the use of editorial art in newspapers around the world. He designed dozens of art books including Michael Jackson’s autobiography, Moonwalk, drew covers for magazines such as the New Yorker and the Atlantic Monthly, and edited 19 books on cats and 9 on dogs. J.C. designed, wrote, and/or illustrated more than 100 books in total and his drawings have been featured in dozens of publications. He owned 2 cats, Spookie and Lucy, who loved him dearly but avoided each other at all cost, and 8 polo ponies—all of whom were addicted to carrots. Donald Friedman is the author of the award-winning novel The Hand Before the Eye and the internationally praised and translated The Writer’s Brush: Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture by Writers.

144 dog terms, idioms, proverbs, and metaphors explained for people. This clever 82-page book is what all 78 million pet dogs in America will want to get their people for Christmas! On a single page you will find quotes from Shakespeare, Rihanna, Pre-Socratic philosophers, Black Sabbath and the NASDAQ. You will learn that a dog is not only “the poodle you can stick in your pocket or border collie with a thousand word vocabulary,” but “the person in your life who’s always got your back, the friend who’ll help you bury the body.” You’re My Dawg, Dog gives us fascinating etymologies and vivid examples of familiar words like “dog days,” “dogfight,” and the “dog collar” worn by clergymen. Colorful dog terms and sayings are defined, like “black dog” (Churchill’s nickname for his bouts of depression) and “tough dog to keep on the porch” (Hillary Clinton’s description for her husband Bill).

The Book of Exodus By Sam Fink SAM FINK (1916–2011) was a multi-talented artist of inimitable range, who first learned to hand-letter from his father. For two decades he worked as art director for the advertising agency Young & Rubicam. He celebrated his 90th birthday in 2006 with the acclaimed release of The Constitution of the United States of America. In the fall of 2007, his Gettysburg Address was published, followed in 2009 by Give It All, Give It Now.

“From Egypt into the Desert. The impressive art evokes the texts and is written in tight undulating lines in diverse formations. For instance, God tells Moses to throw handfuls of soot upward. God also sends thunder and hail and fire. The corresponding picture is a blackened sky with white clouds breaking through the center from which a store of white hail falls to the green earth, which is also aflame. Spectacular.” — Hadassah Magazine

The Book of Exodus was originally conceived by artist Sam Fink as a gift to his family living in Israel. For his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he imagined creating 40 watercolors, one for each chapter in the book of Exodus. This extraordinary biblical text details the Israelite’s enslavement in Egypt, their harrowing journey with Moses out of bondage, and the new laws established for them by their God. In these original skyscapes, Fink reaches readers around the world with breathtaking images that speak to this powerful story. Each watercolor is meticulously hand-lettered with the Old Testament text in Hebrew, as well as in English (using the King James and Jewish Publications Society’s 1917 translation) and thoughtfully painted by an artist whose commitment to bringing one of history’s most meaningful documents to life is exquisitely realized.

In 1984, artist Peter Feldstein set out to photograph the residents of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). He converted an abandoned storefront on Main Street into a studio and posted fliers inviting people to stop by. In the end, nearly all of Oxford stood before his lens. 20 years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. Only this time he invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to join him, and together they went in search of the same residents Feldstein had originally photographed. What emerges is a living composite of a quintessential Midwestern community, told through the words and images of its residents—then and now. This intricate web of human connections is the mainstay of small-town American life—unforgettably captured here in Feldstein’s candid photography and Bloom’s rhythmic storytelling. The Alex Award-winning The Oxford Project is equal parts art, American history, cultural anthropology, and human narrative. It is at once personal and universal, surprising and predictable, simple and profound. 60

The Fourth Wall By Amy Arbus / Introduction by John Patrick Shanley What happens when a performing actor leaves behind the script, the sets, and the lighting, and steps beyond the fourth wall? For three years, Amy Arbus explored this question in a series of dramatic portraits of celebrated actors, both on and off Broadway. Fully costumed but stripped of their context, Arbus’ actors remain in character as they step into anonymous public spaces—theater lobbies, city streets, parks, and alleys. These images achieve an unexpected blend of spectacle and high art, formality and spontaneity, vulnerability and pretense. Collected in this startling book are some of the modern stage’s most gifted actors, including Alan Cumming in Cabaret, John Malkovich in Lost Land, Ed Harris in Wrecks, Cherry Jones in Doubt, and Ethan Hawke and Martha Plimpton in The Coast of Utopia. AMY ARBUS’ photographs have appeared in more than 100 periodicals around the world, including The New Yorker, Aperture, and The New York Times Magazine. She has published six books. Her photographs are part of the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY is one of the most performed contemporary American playwrights. He has received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Drama Desk Award, and the Tony Award for Best Play in 2005 for Doubt. In 1987, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film Moonstruck. 61

“New York’s most obvious examples of the streamlined architectural style—the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center—figure prominently in this book, but it’s the less notorious buildings and the attention given to architectural details that shine brightest in this paean to old Gotham.” — Publisher’s Weekly New York Deco profiles the architecture of the city during its most stylish and dazzling decades: the late 1920s and ‘30s. During this period, art deco, with its emphasis on machine-tooled elegance and sleek lines, replaced the beaux arts style that preceded it. New York City landmarks were born of this age—the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the Waldorf Astoria, and the Lenox Lounge—as well as dozens of lesser-known office buildings and apartment houses. Together, they make the skyline of the Big Apple what it is today. Richard Berenholtz’s stunning photographs of the finest examples of NYC’s art deco architecture are accompanied by text from writers, artists, and personalities of the era, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Willem de Kooning and Ogden Nash, among others. A perfect gift for the New Yorker and tourist alike, this gem of a book is a window into one of the city’s most divine periods.

Ireland: In Word and Image Photographs by Jay Ben Adlersberg Edited by Samantha Bowser

“It is a rarity to find someone so diverse that they can make landscapes, streetscapes, people and animals seem equally alive and ‘at-your-fingertips.’ If you treat yourself to one thing this year, let it be this amazing book.” — thenewwildgeese.com

Ireland—the name alone is enough to conjure up idyllic visions of green hillsides, and rightfully so. From the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast to the lush meadows and lakes of the interior, the Emerald Isle is rich in imagery both awe-inspiring and serene. Yet at the same time, in cities such as Dublin and Belfast, modern architecture rubs shoulders with Georgian townhouses and Norman stonework, testifying to the island’s 21st-century resurgence as the cosmopolitan “Celtic Tiger.” From the remains of a Bronze Age ring fort to the soaring modern Spire of Dublin to the stallions of the National Stud, Ireland is a land of surprising variety and it’s all here. Whether you are planning a trip or wishing for an armchair voyage, whether drawn by an ancestral connection (as 36 million Americans are), or simply under the spell of a land steeped in natural beauty and cultural heritage, you will be captivated by Adlersberg’s Ireland. This visual celebration is accompanied by more than 30 poems and literary excerpts from major writers whose works derive inspiration from Irish themes, both past and present, including the romantic prose of James Joyce, the humorous boyhood memories of Frank McCourt, the celebration of natural beauty in the poetry of W.B. Yeats, the folk tales of Douglas Hyde, and numerous others who capture the unique spirit that is Ireland. More than 160 full-color photographs are accompanied by rich, informative captions.

JAY BEN ADLERSBERG is a contributing artist to Getty Images. His clients include Microsoft, Saatchi and Saatchi, Macmillan, and the New York Times. He brings a journalist’s eye to his images of countries and their people. Jay has also been voted one of the Best Doctors in New York. Video Game s

“If Ready Player One was a fictional love song to video games, The Art of Video Games is the visual poem to gaming— simply a beautiful book filled with gaming nostalgia, inspired innovation and flat-out fun…. Every gamer needs to have The Art of Video Games just like every English major needs to have the collected works of Shakespeare.”

The Art of Video Games From Pac-Man to Mass Effect

By Chris Melissinos and Patrick O’Rourke Introduction by Mike Mika

— J. Jay Franco, Bookrastination

In the 40 years since the first Magnavox Odyssey pixel blinked on in 1972, the home video game industry has undergone a mind-blowing transformation. Fueled by unprecedented advances in technology, boundless imaginations, and an insatiable addiction to fantastic new worlds of play, the video game has gone supernova, rocketing two generations of fans into an ever-expanding universe where art, culture, reality, and emotion collide. As a testament to this stunning evolution, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and curator Chris Melissinos conceived the 2012 exhibition “The Art of Video Games,” spotlighting 80 of the most popular video games over four decades, from Space Invaders to BioShock. Here, in the accompanying book, Melissinos profiles each of these 80 games, sharing stories and comments on their development, innovation, and relevance to the game world’s overall growth. Visual images, composed by Patrick O’Rourke, are all drawn directly from the games themselves, and speak to the evolution of games as an artistic medium, both technologically and creatively. Also included are interviews with some of the industry’s most influential artists and designers, from early pioneers such as Nolan Bushnell to contemporary innovators including Warren Spector and Tim Schafer. Having opened to record-breaking crowds at the Smithsonian, “The Art of Video Games” exhibition will continue to travel around the country through 2016 including stops at the Hudson River Museum in New York, the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, and the Flint Institute of Arts in Michigan.

Chris Melissinos, founder of Past Pixels, curated the exhibition “The Art of Video Games,” which opened on March 16, 2012 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Melissinos has been engaged in the ongoing dialogue about video game technology, social trends, and the application of technology for more than a decade. He is a frequent speaker at universities, and game and technology conferences, including the Game Developers Conference, E3, Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Penny Arcade Expo, JavaOne, Smithsonian Web 2.0, and the U.S. Department of Defense Education Summit. Patrick O’Rourke is a freelance graphic designer, photographer, gamer and video editor.
