Welcome Letter
As you know, this is a pivotal time for Girl Scouts. During 2012, we celebrated 100 Years of Girl Scouting. As we launch into a new century in 2013, we have tremendous opportunities ahead to continue our work together to grow young women who have the courage, confidence and character to change the world around them. Without you as a volunteer, we could not reach the girls and young women of today to prepare them to be the strong leaders of tomorrow. Through your time, commitment and dedication, you are making a difference in girls’ lives. We know Girl Scouting works. Our alumnae are living proof that what we teach today impacts the leaders of tomorrow. Eighty percent of women business owners were Girl Scouts. Sixty-nine percent of female U.S. Senators were Girl Scouts. Sixty-seven percent of female members of the House of Representatives were Girl Scouts. Virtually every female astronaut who has flown in space was a Girl Scout. Volunteers have been essential in making Girl Scouts the leading organization for girls across our nation. Because of the work that you do here locally, Girl Scouting is able to have a far-reaching impact far beyond the geographic boundaries of our council. We know that when girls succeed, so does society. Every year, Girl Scouts provide over 75 million hours of direct services to their communities. You are helping to build the girls who make our world a better place! I want to thank you for the time commitment that you give to our organization and to serving our girls. As an adult volunteer, you will receive training to give you the tools you need to get started and continue to develop the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Direct Service – Working with girls in one of the six Pathways Camp – Explore the great outdoors with a group of like-minded girls. Share your passion and unique talents with tomorrow’s outdoor enthusiasts. Events – Choose your favorite topics, and help girls unleash their potential. During half-day to three-day events, you’ll interact with girls, excite their passions, and help them become their best selves. Series - Come share your passion with a focused group of girls who can’t wait to learn your skill or pursue your area of interest without a long-term commitment. Travel - Explore the world – or at least your corner of it – with a group of girls who need your help planning a trip, earning money and preparing themselves for the adventure of travel. Troop – You can share so much as the girls in your troop earn awards and badges, go on field trips, and learn from community leaders and experts about issues important to your community throughout the school year. Continuing Education All adults who work on a continuing basis with girls are strongly encouraged to participate in continuing education. Before, or at the time a group in the Troop Pathway is preparing to bridge to a new level, continuing education of at least one of the adults is strongly encouraged. Any course and/or training opportunity which focuses on how to work with girls at the next Girl Scout grade level can fulfill this purpose.
The Girl Scout program is delivered through various Pathways. (GSUSA Pathways include: Troop, Series, Travel, Camping, Events and Virtual). Regardless of Pathway, all adults must satisfactorily complete appropriate education in the courses listed above before working with girls. If you would like to volunteer for a Pathway outside of the Troop Pathway, please contact your volunteer services specialist for more information. Recommended Courses for all Pathways Grade Level Courses Camp In A & B Required Courses for Non Troop Pathways Girl Scouting 101 Pathway Orientation First Aid/CPR* (at least Level 1) *At least one leader is required to have First Aid/CPR, or can currently be a Health Care Provider. Course Attendance Adult Education courses are open to all registered adults. Ambassador girls who are working on Volunteer-in-Training (VIT) may attend appropriate courses. Please do not bring children to workshops unless childcare is specially noted. This is for your child’s safety and the consideration of those in attendance. Registration Process Pre-registration for all courses is required. Online registration is now available for most training classes. Please visit the GSK training calendar at www.gskentuckiana.org for online
Fees Most courses are provided as a service of the council. When a fee is charged, it must be sent in with the registration form or financial assistance application. See Resource Sheet #526 on www.gskentuckiana.org for financial assistance application. Fees for council cancelled courses are refundable or transferable. Fees for courses which are held, but which you do not attend, are forfeited. Refunds are available for cancellations due to medical reasons, personal injury, or death in the family. Registration Notification Mark your calendar for the day, time and place of the courses for which you register! For courses that offer online registration, you will receive an automated confirmation. If the workshop is full, cancelled, or changed in any way, you will be notified. If the minimum number is not met, the workshop will be cancelled. Cancellation Procedure Please call to cancel your registration. This is a courtesy to the volunteer trainers who prepare for the number of people who are registered. Please call your Program and Learning Center 24 hours prior to the event to cancel your registration. Tracking Trainings At Troop Pathway Orientation, you will receive a wallet-sized card for recording each course you attend. It is important that you retain your card to verify the courses you have attended. GSK keeps records of all completed training courses. What to bring to class? Always bring note-taking materials. If possible (though it is not required), bring your Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting , Journey book set, Volunteer Essentials, Safety Activity Checkpoints, Adult Education Training Card, and items listed for the particular course you are taking. A Journey book set will be given to new troop leaders when they take the appropriate grade level training (one per troop). 5

Girl Scouting 101 Classroom Session This classroom course introduces new volunteers to Girl Scouts’ inspiring national leadership experience from Journey resources and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, to the cookie sale program, safety guidelines and much more. GS101 is a required training for all Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana volunteers. Fee: none
Girl Scout Brownie Grade Level The Brownie Grade Level class is “the how to” on using the Brownie Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, Brownie Journeys and resources, as well as girl awards and council programs. In this class, you will also be exposed to the principle of “girl-led programming” in which girls participate in the planning for the troop through the Journey map and troop calendar as a part of managing a Brownie Girl Scout Troop/Group. New leaders will receive a copy of the adult guide and the girl book for a Brownie Journey upon the completion of this session (one per troop). Fee: none
Girl Scouting 101 Online This easy to use online orientation introduces new volunteers to Girl Scouts’ inspiring national leadership experience - from Journey resources and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, to the cookie sale program, safety guidelines and much more. GS101 is a required training for all Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana volunteers and requires about 45 – 50 minutes to complete. You can access Girl Scouting 101 by logging onto the Girl Scouts of the USA training Website. See page 18 for login instructions. Fee: none
Girl Scout Junior Grade Level The Junior Grade Level class demonstrates the use of Journey resources, Junior Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, girl awards, and navigating council programs. In learning to manage a Girl Scout Troop/Group, this class will examine the Junior uniform, the 3 Keys to Leadership, goal setting, and age-specific topics for a Junior level troop/group. New leaders will receive a copy of the adult guide and the girl book for a Junior Journey upon the completion of this session (one per troop). Fee: none
Troop Pathway Orientation Troop Pathway Orientation will give new leaders the tools needed to successfully lead a Girl Scout troop. In this class, Girl Scout policies, procedures and safety and risk management requirements, where and how to find support from Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and Girls Scouts of the USA will be covered. Important forms and trainings will be available, in addition to a bit of “how to” information to set you on the path to a thriving troop year. All adult volunteers are required to take Girl Scouting101 (GS101) and at least one troop leader must take Troop Pathway Orientation before the first troop meeting with the girls. Fee: none
Girl Scout Cadette Grade Level The Cadette Grade Level class will instruct new or seasoned leaders in using the Cadette Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, the Cadette Journeys and resources, girl awards, and council programs. While learning about the uniform and managing a Girl Scout Troop/ Group at the Cadette level, this class will provide knowledge on the national leadership awards and opportunities for girls. New leaders will receive a copy of the adult guide and the girl book for a Cadette Journey upon completion of this session (one per troop). Fee: none
Girl Scout Daisy Grade Level The Daisy Grade Level class will lead participants through an abundance of “how to information” topics, including but not limited to Daisy Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, Daisy Journeys and resources, girl awards and council programs. A comprehensive approach to managing a Girl Scout Troop/ Group including insight to Girl Scouting

Girl Scout Senior/Ambassador Grade Level The Senior/Ambassador Grade Level class will channel through Senior/Ambassador Journey resources, Senior/Ambassador Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, girl awards, council programs, together with a look into managing a Senior/Ambassador Girl Scout Troop/Group. Components of this class also involve exploring the Senior/Ambassador uniforms and gaining insight into the numerous national awards, especially the Gold Award. New leaders will receive a copy of the adult guide and the girl book for a Senior or Ambassador Journey upon the completion of this session (one per troop). Fee: none
OUTDOOR EDUCATION COURSES Camp In Camp in teaches volunteers how to prepare their girls to go to camp for the day or stay the night at a winterized building. Available in one session or in two parts (A & B). Camp in A is available as a face-to-face or home study. Camp in B is only available as face-toface.
FIRST AID COURSES American Red Cross CPR This course will teach adult and child CPR, AED and includes certification through the American Red Cross. Certification is valid for two years. A Level 1 First Aider is required for troop activities and day camp. What to bring: blanket and note-taking material. Wear casual clothing as you will be working on the floor. Fee: $25/$35/$50 (varies according to number of certifications received). American Red Cross First Aid This course will teach basic first aid and includes certification through the American Red Cross. Certification is valid for two years. A Level 1 First Aider is required for troop activities and day camp. What to bring: blanket and note-taking material. Wear casual clothing as you will be working on the floor. Camp In B The Camp In B class will teach the skills needed to prepare girls for overnights in winterized buildings, for example Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana properties, state parks, etc. Topics included are as follows: fire safety, preparation, and extinguishing, along with stick cooking, portable cook stoves (using

Camp In A The Camp In A class will teach the skills needed to prepare girls for day activities that take place outdoors. Topics covered will include basic outdoor program for day trips as well as some information for overnights in a winterized building in a camp or outdoor setting. Participants will gain knowledge in using Volunteer Essentials, GSUSA’s Safety Activity Checkpoints, as well as guidelines and procedures for troop camping. An introduction to the following concepts will be provided as well: girl readiness, progression, planning, properties, hiking, and emergencies. Camp In A is valid for 5 years and authorizes registered Girl Scout adults to take groups/troops on outdoor day activities. This training is available as a face-to-face class or as a home study through your local Program and Learning Center. What to bring: 3 ring binder, Volunteer Essentials and Safety Activity Checkpoints. Fee: $2

This training is only available as a face-to-face class. Prerequisite: Camp In A. What to bring: outdoor binder (binder from part A), Volunteer Essentials, and Safety Activity Checkpoints. Fee: $6 Camp Out The Camp Out class assists in building the skills needed to prepare girls for troop camping, including camping in tents and other shelters in established campsites. Participants will receive hands on experience with fire building, tent pitching and usage, tool craft, knots, care of aluminum pots, use and care of ironware, foil cooking, and use of coolers for storage of perishable food items. Although participants do not plan the food for their training, during the training all participants complete a meal planning exercise and food preparation. Camp Out is valid for 5 years and authorizes registered Girl Scout adults to take troops/groups camping in tents at Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana camps and developed tent areas. Overnight camping in tents is optional during this training class. Prerequisites: Camp In A & Camp In B. What to bring: participants will receive a letter with information prior to the training. Bring your 3 ring outdoor training binder. Fee: $10 Wilderness Travel Wilderness Travel is a preparation class on taking girls on a camping trip in a wilderness environment with as little impact on the environment as possible. Subjects consist of taking troops for primitive or survival camping. Course includes advanced skills such as: trip backpacking, primitive sanitation, multi-day food planning, preparation, and survival techniques. Two major meals will be cooked at camp, using at least two new cooking skills beyond those used in Camp Out. Prerequisites: Camp In A, Camp In B, and Camp Out. Fee: $30
Outdoor Update Outdoor Update is for adults who have taken previous Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Outdoor Education courses. Participants will review and update outdoor skills, with a focus on topics related to safety and care of GSK equipment and properties, receive updates from GSUSA and GSK policies and practices regarding group camping, hiking, cooking and other common outdoor practices, as well as any GSK property updates. Outdoor Update renews outdoor authorization for 5 years for Camp In and Camp Out (previously Level I, II and III). It does not renew Wilderness Travel. Fee: $8 Archery Level 1 Instructor Course This course will teach adults to instruct girls in archery activities most closely associated with a "grassroots" program that is short-term in scope and focused on introducing basic archery skills to beginners. Such programs would include: camps, Scouting, 4-H, and Parks and Recreation. This course will allow you to instruct archery programs and events at Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana events and camp properties. The course fee includes USA Archery Basic Instructor Certification (Instructor book, course book and certification card). Fee: $35 Cave Training Facilitator Course This cave training at Camp Stem will provide leaders with the skills to take girls through the cave at Camp Stem in Laconia, Indiana. Basics of traversing caves, safety procedures, and equipment reservation systems will be covered. Persons taking this training need to be in good physical condition, able to climb, and crawl in tight spaces. Please contact Dana Young with questions, 502-413-2851 or dyoung@gskentuckiana.org. Fee: $15 Essentials of River Kayaking – Level 2 The Essentials of River Kayaking course is designed to teach beginner paddlers to safely and enjoyably kayak on flat water and gentle rivers of no more than Class 1 difficulty. This course expands on the Introduction to Kayaking Level 1 course and would qualify the adult leader to take girls on slow moving (ConƟnued on page 11)

streams and rivers (Green River, Elkhorn Creek and similar areas) when water levels are classified at Class 1. Fee: $30 Introduction to Canoeing This one day program emphasizes beginning paddling skills for entry level adults who would like to be qualified to take girls canoeing on non-moving or slow moving sheltered waters and bays (Camp Pennyroyal Lake, Camp Bear Creek’s Bay, Barren River Reservoir Bays, or at Camp Houchens) at low to medium water levels. Fee: $20
Rock Wall Facilitator Course Climbing Wall Facilitators needed! Volunteers are needed to lead girls in GSK’s climbing wall programs. Many programs exist throughout the year, mostly on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and some Saturdays. Training is required and provided. In this course, expect to learn technical skills such as tying a figure 8 knot and belaying (holding the safety rope for the girls). DO NOT anticipate ever needing to climb the wall. However, if the desire to climb is present, the opportunity to do so will be afforded to each participant. In maintaining the new found skills in Rock Wall facilitating, at least one program every other month or more is required for those who complete this course and plan to volunteer. Programs are typically two hours long and have approximately 15 girls participating. Fee: none Teams Course Facilitator Course This course is open to adults and older girls, 14 years old and up, who are interested in
AWARD COURSES Striving for Silver Striving for Silver will teach girls how to look around their neighborhood or school and find ways to make a change for the better. Girls learn how to follow their passion to find a project that meets a neighborhood, school or local community need (must be done beyond the Girl Scout community). Adults will learn how to guide girls to identify issues that they care about by exploring and developing their projects. It would be best to take a Grade Level course, become familiar with Journey books or review the Journey information resources on the GSK website prior to attending this course. Each individual (girl/adult) should register separately. Fee: none Going for the Gold Going for the Gold will teach girls how to follow their passion to find a project that meets a community need and can be sustainable after their involvement. The procedures for submitting Girl Scout Gold Award project plans and the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana approval process will be detailed and explored in this class. Adults will learn how to guide girls to find their passion and proceed with the programmatic outcomes listed above. It would be best to take a Grade Level course, become familiar with Journey books or review the Journey resources on the GSK Website prior to attending this course. Each individual (girl/adult) should register separately. Fee: none 11

Introduction to Kayaking – Level 1 The Introduction to Kayaking course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry level individuals. This one day program is for adults who would like to be qualified to take girls kayaking on non-moving or slow moving sheltered waters and bays (Camp Pennyroyal Lake, Bear Creek Aquatic Camp Bay, Barren River Reservoir Bays, Camp Houchens, Boundary Waters or other similar areas) at low to medium water levels. Fee: $20
becoming qualified as a Team's Course facilitator. Teams Courses are an excellent way to get your troop working together. Teams Courses are designed to build an individual's sense of confidence and self-esteem, teach mutual support and cohesion within a group, develop decision-making and leadership, and foster appreciation and respect for differences existing within the group. Participants will gain an understanding in how to create this with the troop/group. Yearly requalification is not required, but encouraged as an enrichment course and as an update on new events. Fee: $10

OUTDOOR EDUCATION COURSES
Girl Scouting 101 This easy to use online training introduces new volunteers to Girl Scouts’ inspiring national leadership experience from Journey resources and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, to the cookie sale program, safety guidelines and much more. It is a required training for all Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana volunteers and requires about 45 – 50 minutes to complete. You can access GS101 by logging onto the GSUSA training website and following the directions below.
Instructions: 1. Go to http://training.girlscouts.org/ 2. Click: Girl Scouting 101 3. Password: aboutGS101 (the password is case sensitive) 4. Fill out the registration: name, address, etc. Our council name is: Kentuckiana. Click: Submit. 5. Click Instructions. This will explain the procedure for the training. 6. Click Resources. This will suggest ideas how to work with your grade level girls.
Important Please fill in the correct council name to receive training credit. This is the only way we have to verify you have completed the required course.

2012 FALL FORUMS Fall forums are held annually in all parts of the council to give adult members and girls ages 14 and older a chance to talk with council leadership.
