President’s Report

Ellen Shackles 2015 has been a highly successful year for Ultimate in WA:  The 2nd High School Championships was held with increased numbers and new schools joining the competition  We hosted Australia Ultimate Championships (AUC) earlier in the year and fielded highly competitive WA teams  There was a strong contingent of WA players selected to play for Australia at WFDF U23s in all categories  We sent a girls and a boys team to the Youth Ultimate Championships and had a highly successful campaign  Phoenix 2015 was attended by teams from several regional areas  Coaching sessions in schools has continued to increase and a new Youth Ultimate disc has been designed  Increased regional presence and growth of regional clubs Congratulations to the WA teams on their commitment to success and their intense preparation for the championships. It was great to witness player development from the start of team preparations to the tournament. Congratulations to Kaos on finishing 3rd and well done to all players who represented the state. A huge amount of effort went into planning for AUC and the event was a great success! 26 teams competed and this equates to 464 players. There was a lot of positive feedback from supporters, players and AFDA. Thank you to all involved with the organising of AUC, especially Tournament Director, John Damiani. The ANZAC Ceremony was another particular highlight for all who attended. I would like to acknowledge all of the work done by our employees, Anna Haynes and Kyal Oh. They have been integral to the successful year we have had because of their planning, commitment, vision and support. These two give 100% to everything and have given a lot of themselves, including their own time to the development of the sport – thank you to you both. A big thank you to all our members, clubs, coaches, volunteers, league directors, employees and committee members and supporters for all of the work they did to make 2015 such a successful year for WAFDA. I encourage our members to volunteer – even if it in the lead up to an event. Our employees and the committee will always be willing to help train and explain tasks to you and all help is welcome. A special mention to Lauren Hoskins and Jasmine Seah for their work on the Executive Committee. Lauren has been a dedicated, passionate and vital member of the WAFDA Committee since joining in 2013. She was elected to the position of Treasurer and has quickly gained a thorough understanding of the budget and our finances and has always kept immaculate records. Thank you, Loz! Secretaries Report Jasmine Seah

Welcome to the 2015 Annual Report of the Western Australian Flying Disc Association. I would like to take the time to thank Lauren Hoskins (Treasurer), Cameron (Ex-president), Ellen Shackles (President), and Anna Haynes (Executive Officer) for their continuous support and guidance on my role as the Secretary of WAFDA this past year. My year as WAFDA’s secretary has seen me doing many of the administrative and facilitative functions, such as sending out meeting agendas, taking minutes, and making sure follow up actions are well articulated and completed. In addition, I have helped develop WAFDA Event Communication Standard Operating Procedures, and have learned a lot in terms of WAFDA's Strategic Operation Plans, specifically on how the association strives to develop the sport through key events, Perth Ultimate League, and supporting club run events. Although it has been a challenging year juggling work, entrepreneurial and personal facets on my life, I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity to gain an understanding of the Ultimate scene in Western Australia. A burgeoning sport, I have gained a newfound appreciation of the Ultimate Flying Disc scene in Western Australia - from its humble beginnings to where they are today, to what the future holds. The sport is growing at such pace that I believe the continuous programs, key events and club engagement will only serve to bring it to greater heights. I sincerely apologise for stepping down this year due to multiple personal commitments and time constraints, but my hope for WAFDA is that they continue growing the sport through the excellent job Kyal Oh (Youth & Inclusion Officer) & Anna Haynes (Executive Officer) have been doing through the Youth Development Programs, as well as to continue the conversation with clubs as to how WAFDA can help clubs grow by recruiting new members. Jasmine Seah Secretary

Financial Report Lauren Hoskins

On the back of a very tough financial year in 2013/14, WA Flying Disc Association had some pleasing financial results in the 2014/15 financial year. The WA Flying Disc Association began the year with only $2,272.34 in the bank, but closed the year with a profit of $5,432.35 which is a massive turnaround from the $19,732.17 loss the previous year! We were certainly a bit rocky at the start of the financial year. The DSR grant we rely heavily upon was held up by a “false start” - our first AGM was not valid as it fell before the start of the financial year, so we had to redo it. It turned out to be for the best anyway because our previously appointed Executive committee experienced some turnover: our incumbent President, Kendall Thorn, moved to Dubai and was replaced by Cameron Boyle. And our Secretary, Mary-Jane Rigby, stepped down and was replaced by Jasmine Seah. We had to borrow $10,000 from AFDA to cover urgent expenses and wages while waiting for our DSR grant to come in, but we soon paid it back and finished the year on a very positive note. Unfortunately Cameron moved to Melbourne in February, so as per the constitution the Executive committee appointed Ellen Shackles who stepped up to fill the vacant role of President. Thanks to all those who have been part of the Executive Committee over the past year and a half. I do attribute a lot of our financial turnaround to the smart planning of the 2013-14 Exec Committee who recognised our financial danger, and made the necessary changes to combat it. Last January we reformed the League structure to ensure there were 4 Leagues every financial year, and introduced a more profitable A Division product for our members. We also took back the hosting of key WAFDA affiliated events through the organisation, rather than farming them out to our clubs to host. On that note I want to make special mention of the amazing job Anna has done as Tournament Director for our key events this year, we even received emails complimenting her fantastic communication and work ethic. She is a real pro and I know we couldn’t have done it to the same standard without her. But I can also attribute some of our financial success this year to the hosting of a major national tournament, the Australian Ultimate Championships, so I also want to make special mention of the fantastic job done by our Tournament Director, John Damiani, and his committee. Thanks again to those guys for such a great tournament, we really are lucky to have such experienced volunteers contributing their knowledge and time to our community. Also a special shout out to Ellie Murray-Young for her hard work organising an Ultimate film festival at the Northbridge Piazza. Some key financial data: Our League fees remain our largest source of revenue at $45,826 income, which works out to an average of $11,456.50 per league. This covers our annual league-related expenses such as AFDA fees of $12,974, field hire of $13,190, and League hosting fees $1680. I do want to thank our previous League Directors, Piers Truter and Sarah Rice, for all their hard work, as well as Alicia Liwt who took over with Candace Lines, who is our current League Director. Notable grants received this year were from the DSR & ASC. Our annual grant increased from $28,000 to $31,000 which was a great help. But we also received additional grants for strategic planning and other items, for a total of $40,000 in grants.

These grants go towards paying for our 2 employees, Anna and Kyal, which are easily our largest outgoing expense. Including wages, super & tax, our employees cost the organisation just over $70,000 per year- which is an investment we are happy to make for all the hard work these guys put in. Anna is paid 30 hours per week as Executive Officer, managing the administrative components of the business, and Kyal is paid 15 hours per fortnight as Youth Development Officer, coaching and growing our presence in schools. We know that the work these guys do is directly related to the continued growth and development of Ultimate in Western Australia, and Australia. So again a special thanks Anna and Kyal for all your hard work this past year. In addition to my role as Treasurer I worked on various other projects, including running the WAFDA Awards at the Mt Lawley Croquet Club in October recognising some of the awesome volunteers working to make our sport great - and there are a lot! I also managed the PUL & Events Calendar, assisted with the running of WAFDA affiliated events, wrote a media release to get media coverage prior to AUC, and helped with the draw for the recent single gender league. Moving forward, it’s my vision that WAFDA can work more closely with the WA Clubs. WAFDA can train school kids, and advertise to recruit new players all they like, but ultimately the development of those players’ skills, their enjoyment and sense of camaraderie that leads us to become addicted to the sport, comes from the network of people they play with. Their club. The more WAFDA can do to help clubs develop and grow, the better we can achieve outcomes for the sport in all key areas: player numbers, revenue, and high performance. I’ve learned so much in my time as Treasurer about things I never even expected to, and I’m really looking forward to handing over to the next Treasurer so they can continue on the good work.

Executive Officer Report

Anna Haynes The original intention of this development position was to increase the number of people playing Ultimate in WA by increasing the awareness of flying disc sports in the wider community, provide in‐school coaching sessions, running coaching courses, expanding support in regional areas and providing administrative support to the Association’s key volunteers. Over five years this role has developed, and redesigned to reflect changes to the organisation and the sport and recreation industry. We constantly strive to improve our new business structure. WA Ultimate Website & Communications The majority of administrative tasks revolve around communications. Keeping the website updated, preparing the monthly e‐newsletter and posting information to our social media sites to ensure our members are well informed and that achievements of this great Association are recorded and shared. In addition to regular communications we have external parties to liaise with. Preparing reports to the Department of Sport and Recreation each quarter relating to our Operational and Strategic targets are all part of the administration hub that is WA Ultimate. Club Support & Regional Development Through the support of regional funding we have been able to visit Broome Ultimate Club and provide valuable support to their players and committee members. Supporting their annual event “The Cable Beach Hat” has been an absolute pleasure and we can’t wait to return next year. Events and Branding You may have noticed the revamp of our key events and the branding that surrounds them. Logos specific to each event are been produced and used to promote these events making them familiar and professional for internal and external use. Formalising how events are run and setting consistent deadlines has been a big focus for WA Ultimate and it is great to see participation grow as a direct benefit.

Coaching Coaching Courses are held at various times of the year. This course is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coach Accreditation Scheme and involves both theory and practical requirements. We also conduct coaching courses with Murdoch University Bachelor of Science and Education students as part of their degree requirements each semester. 2015 Australian Ultimate Championships In April Perth played host to the nation’s biggest separate gender event, The Australian Ultimate Championships. Over 400 participants across 26 teams took part in the four day annual event. Big congratulations to our Tournament Director John Damiani and his amazing organising committee on all their work bringing this event to life. Anna Haynes Development Officer

AUSTRALIAN YOUTH ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (AYUC) The weekend of 6-7 June 2015 saw the return of the Australian Youth Ultimate Championships (AYUC) for the third time, this year in Sydney, New South Wales. Kirsten Chick was announced as the manager for the campaign, however due to her work and study commitments she was unable to attend the championship and Rhiannon Coad was appointed as the new manager where she continued to collaboratively work with Kirsten. The WA representative team was chosen from two selection events held on the 13th and 20th of April 2015. Western Australia were very excited to be a part of the AYUC this year again after a dominant performance at the 2014 championships and this year also saw the return of the Girls division at AYUC with four teams battling it out; NSW X, NSW Y, VIC and WA. The Boys division hosted five states; ACT, NSW, QLD, VIC, and WA. ‘YOUTH ULTIMATE WA’ DISC DESIGN Thanks to a grant from the Australian Sports Foundation, WA Ultimate were able to create some new youth discs. These discs will be distributed throughout schools across WA and used for marketing and promotional strategies over 2015-2016. WA Ultimate ran a design competition from the 9th – 23rd September 2015. We had several design submissions and a decision was made to combine two of the concepts. Our winners were Sophie Taylor and Dave Rahul. The new discs look amazing and our Youth Ultimate WA logo has been revamped which is now being used on the Youth Ultimate WA Facebook page. 2015 saw our exposure to new students/teachers increase from 2014 however the number of sessions held was lower than previous years. This may be due to more schools and teachers learning Ultimate through various resources including WA Ultimate’s own, meaning the need for schools to outsource WA Ultimate Coaches is lessoning. WA Ultimate use of their casual coaches as increased in 2015. There are 10 coaches who regularly run school sessions for WA Ultimate. In 2015, 31 of the 88 sessions were ran by our casual coaches. WA ULTIMATE RESOURCES WA Ultimate’s “Play Ultimate” pamphlet was invented in 2015. This pamphlet is targeted to new players, students and clubs. The pamphlet included information such as; what is ultimate, how to play, how to throw with basic explanations and images, spirit of the game, and how to contact WA Ultimate for more information. These play ultimate pamphlets were also turned into Club pamphlets which involved personalisation of each pamphlet to include Club Logo and Club contacts. The WA Ultimate’s “How to get Ultimate in your school” pamphlet was re-invigorated in 2015 (previous version 2013), this pamphlet is targeted to schools, teachers and students which includes information such as; in school sessions, teacher resources, professional development, High School Ultimate Championships, equipment, Ultimate in your School, and how to contact WA Ultimate for more information. After launching the WA ultimate YouTube channel in July 2013. The intention is that this YouTube channel will produce more media coverage on things such as tournaments, Perth Ultimate League, personal team interviews, volunteer profiles etc. This is still our goal, and it has also been extended into a resource avenue for new players, schools and youth. Uploaded is a ‘What is Ultimate – a Basic guide to the game’ video which was produced and uploaded in March 2015 and has had over 800 views. It is also embedded on the WA Ultimate website’s Teacher Resources page. Production of further Rule videos have started with the intent to compliment the What is Ultimate video and clearly and easily explain the basic rules of Ultimate. These will also be uploaded to our channel and be accessible by the general public, and outsourced to Schools, youth and teachers.
