THURLITH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL, WAU DIOCESE --- PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR TEACHING MATERIALS FOR ORPHANS & STREET CHILDREN Project description and background

DRAFT

This Project is for the provision of teaching materials for two linked schools, one Primary and one Secondary, specifically dedicated to the many vulnerable children of the eastern parts of the Bahr al Ghazal Internal Province of the ECSS. The school has been running for one year with limited teaching materials, and the aim is to provide adequate materials for the future. As the school year has already started, the Project request is “as soon as possible. A grant of $3030 is sought, calculated as set out below. The project period is 12 months although the furniture will of course last longer. Background information In February 2017 Wau Diocese opened Thurlith Primary School in Akon town, Gogrial West County, Warrap State as a free school for the large numbers of vulnerable children on the streets of towns in the Internal Province, many of whom are orphans. Akon is about 100 miles north of Wau. The aim is to provide a dedicated school in one location specifically for the orphans and street children of the towns of Western Bahr el Ghazal. Providing a school is an alternative to just trying to return children to relatives who are unable to support them, or, in many cases, are unknown. The number of the children we have enrolled in the school for the academic year 2017 is 279 pupils both boys and girls, and this year have 350 in total. The level of the school is from p1-p5, and an accelerated learning program (ALP) has two classes level 1 and level 2. We have introduced this educational system to help the children who had failed to get education early so that they catch up their basic education within four years. There are 12 teachers and 5 supporting staff (cooks and security guards) running the school currently for an academic year 2017-2018 They are enrolled in three educational categories according to their age group and the level of education they already had :--1. We have enrolled children from 3-6 years for nursery school. 2. We enrolled children from 7-13 years in primary education system. 3. And enrolled the children from 14 and above in accelerated learning program (alternative education program) to help them catch up their basic education within four years. There were 12 teachers and 5 supporting staff (cooks and security guards) running the school in the academic year 2017-2018 The School is continuing well and we have introduced a Secondary School this year for the same purpose so that pupils can continue with their studies after completing Primary level and also help orphans and the children from poor parents who failed to educate their children. The photos show that the school currently uses huts made of local materials or is outside under trees.
