ABOUT The 16th edition of the FINA World Championships will be held from July 24 – August 9, 2015 and for the first time in history the event will be held in Russia, specifically the city of Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and promoted as the ‘sports capital of Russia’. ! ! HISTORY The FINA World Championships were first held in 1973 in Belgrade Yugoslavia (now Serbia), with women’s water polo being added to the program in the fifth edition of the event in Madrid, Spain in 1986 and won by Australia. All 15 of the men’s world championships to date have been won by European teams. ! ! Men’s Roll of Honour 4 Titles

The Aussie Stingers come into the 16th FINA World Championships as one of the top ranked teams in the world (4th), having been on the podium in all six major FINA-run events since the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona in 2013, where they placed second. Leading the Stingers will be captain Bronwen Knox, a veteran of two Olympic Games (‘08, ’12 – winning bronze at both), who will play her 300th game for Australia against the Netherlands in the final group game at these world championships. Alongside Knox will be Western Australia’s Gemma Beadsworth who is also a dual Olympic bronze medallist (‘08, ‘12) and a veteran of 230 tests for Australia. Beadsworth took a break from international competition following the 2012 Olympics, and this is the biggest tournament she will have played at in three years. The team also features Victorian Rowie Webster, who for the past two years has been a finalist for the FINA world player of the year award, and is regarded as one of the best players in the world. Webster won an Olympic bronze with the Stingers at her first Games in 2012, as did Western Australia’s Glencora McGhie (nee Ralph), who is another of the team’s key players leading into Kazan. Also among the world’s best is left side driver Ash Southern. Hailing from the small town of Cardwell, located between Townsville and Cairns in North Queensland, Southern is a four time National Water Polo League champion and earlier this year scored four goals to help Greek club Olympiacos Piraeus win the LEN women’s Euroleague water polo title for the first time in the history of the famous club. While all the Stingers players are close in and out of the water, Holly Lincoln-Smith and Nicola Zagame in particular have become firm friends over the course of their careers. Both were named in the London Olympics All Star team in 2012, and won world championship silver medals with the Stingers in 2013. Ironically both spent 2014 sidelined with shoulder injuries and since their return have both been recapturing their form from years prior, hoping to help Australia to their first world title since 1986. In amongst the experience of the team is teenager Bronte Halligan, who has just 27 caps to her name. The daughter of rugby league kicking legend Daryl Halligan, sporting prowess is in the Halligan genes, and Bronte is very quickly establishing herself as a cool head in high pressure games.

The Aussie Sharks come into the 16th FINA World Championships as an 11th ranked underdog of world water polo, a team with the potential to cause an upset as they did at this year’s FINA World League Intercontinental tournament, where they claimed the gold medal, their first ever at a significant FINA event. Captain of the team is Queenslander Rhys Howden, who is one of three dual Olympians alongside vice captain Richie Campbell and goalkeeper James Stanton-French. Howden spent 2014 on the sidelines after rupturing his ACL during the National Water Polo League season that year, and has been back competing since January of this year. Meanwhile, Campbell is a player that has the individual skill to be one of the most influential players in the water. When given space by the opposition, nine times out of ten Campbell will convert the goal. Stanton-French competed at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, although missed the 2012 London Olympics. He has since returned with a vengeance to cement his spot as the number one goalkeeper in Australia. The Sharks also have a strong contingent of players based overseas. Aaron Younger, has completed his first season with famed Croatian outfit VK Jug and after playing his first Olympics at age 20 in 2012, is considered our best export in some years. Playing in Hungary is AJ Roach, the son of league legend Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach, and centre forwards Joel Swift and Joe Kayes. The last of the overseas based players is Drummoyne local Tyler Martin who recently won the French title with CN Marseille. Adding to the experience of the side are Sydney based players Joel Dennerley and Johnno Cotterill. Dennerley, the team’s other goalkeeper hasn’t had a call up since the 2013 World Championships, however following an outstanding year in the domestic National Water Polo League was recalled and continued to impress at this year’s FINA World League Super Final. After missing out on the 2008 Olympics, Cotterill has made himself a mainstay of the team since before London 2012 and creates scoring opportunities by being in the right place at the right time. Leading the Sharks is Croatian water polo superstar turned Olympic gold medal winning coach Elvis Fatovic. In 2012 Fatovic was assistant coach to Ratko Rudić for the Croatian national team, however following the Olympic Games both left Croatia, Rudić taking up the top job in Brazil, while Fatovic came to Australia. In the years since, the narrative of the battle between the master and the apprentice has grown, Australia and Brazil finding themselves as closely matched adversaries over the past two and a half years.
