Many of the women in our programs resonate with these lyrics. They often don’t believe that there is anything beautiful about them or that anything beautiful will happen or could come from their lives. Life has taught them, often from a young age that they are unworthy, unimportant and replaceable. If they are physically beautiful it usually costs them something. Our partners, sometimes even more important than providing for the physical needs of vulnerable and rescued women --- provide for the emotional needs of the soul. They tenderly and gently speak messages of worth, dignity, purpose, value and beauty into their lives. And as they hear these messages and learn to create beautiful things and see people respond --- they begin to believe that they are beautiful inside and out.

At first, Susana was uneasy. She only came to her jewelry training three days a week, afraid that she would make a mistake. She didn’t want to be yelled at, criticized, or mistreated—what she had been used to for a long time. Instead, each day she received the traditional Guatemalan greeting, a kiss on each cheek. Her training continued with compassion and patience, and in time Susana’s fears subsided. Surrounded by a healing, caring community of people, Susana’s heart softened and her insecurity began to melt away. She learned that she was created with value and purpose. Susana now works with dignity designing and crafting beautiful jewelry. More importantly, she now understands that she has beauty and value as well.

WAR, Int’l met Monique on outreach in the red light district of Grand Rapids. In the “undressing” room of a local strip club, Monique quietly whispered to WAR staff that she longed for a different life. WAR staff told her to seek them should she desire safety or different employment. At nine a.m. the next morning, Monique was at the WAR office. WAR hired her on the spot, and the U.S. Training Center was born. Monique is now earning a stable income, learning new skills, and building a resume that will blot out the brokenness of her past. As she works with dignity in a safe environment, she works toward a new future for her and her children.
