A presentation at this month's meeting of the Wanstead Historical Society will look at the issues surrounding the biggest explosion London has ever seen. The blast in question occurred in 1917 at Brunner Mond's Chemical Works – a munitions factory that

was manufacturing explosives for Britain's war effort – in Silvertown, east London. The talk by Graham Hill, who has co-authored a book on the subject, will take place from 8pm on 15 January at Wanstead Library (visitors: £3). Call 07949 026 212

Primary school tables

Snaresbrook Primary

Local primary schools in Wanstead and Woodford performed well in league tables published by the Department for Education last month. Pupils were assessed in reading, writing, and maths and expected to reach a Level 4 standard in all. Level 4 indicates that they can spell properly, start to use grammatically complex sentences and multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 or 100. Our Lady of Lourdes school topped the table in Wanstead, with 93% of its 58 pupils reaching Level 4 and 41% attaining Level 5.

Last year was a difficult time for Snaresbrook Primary School, having been deemed 'inadequate' by Ofsted in July 2013. However, in October 2014, Ofsted re-inspected the school – which is located on Meadow Walk, South Woodford – and it has since been recognised as 'good' in all areas. "This is due to the hard work of the executive headteacher, new staff, the governing body and, of course, the children. In national tests they achieved significantly above average in both key stages in 2013 and 2014," said parent Debbie Watson.
