Welcome... Opportunities abound for 2015. Yes, it's that time of year again when it seems more appropriate than ever to contemplate – and perhaps even follow through with – the possibility of engaging in a new activity or embarking on a new regime of some description. A new year, a fresh start, a blank canvas – the clichéd descriptions are as prevalent as the opportunities themselves, so I shall spare you the morale-boosting rhetoric that you can easily find elsewhere as everyone tries to put a New Year spin on anything and everything. But slaves as we are to our diaries and schedules, our calendars dictate our collective mindset, leaving us obliged to mark the incrementing years with great gusto. With the final day of December scratched from 2014, our expectations are left high for the beginning of a new cycle. The canvas of the 2015 diary is literally blank, with a potential to be filled with seemingly limitless possibilities (apologies, the New Year rhetoric has found its way back in). Needless to say, those possibilities were always there for the taking – the gym was probably accepting new members in March, the support to quit smoking was available in June as much as it will be in January and the wholesome food you've decided to stock up on could have just as easily been bought in September. But there's no time like the present, and given the present now also happens to be a new beginning, there's plenty of encouragement to welcome in a new you for the New Year (apologies again, the clichés are here to stay). Perhaps you will resolve to be healthier this year (see page 42), to bring your financial affairs into order (see page 68), to explore a new creative outlet (see pages 14-15), or to become more active within the local community (see page 20). Or perhaps your resolutions will become more frequent and take their lead from Henry Moore, who said: "I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's." Lee Marquis, Editor

Grade I listed church reopens following improvement works
A newly-painted St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church on Overton Drive, Wanstead reopened for services last month. The church – which is the only Grade I listed building in Redbridge – was closed in August 2014 for redecoration and electrical checks. A reasonable sum was included in the
budget to allow for possible repairs to plasterwork. In the event, these repairs were not required and the contingency amount was instead used for lighting improvements, including the installation of LED fittings and a new dimmer board.

Primary school tables
Snaresbrook Primary
Local primary schools in Wanstead and Woodford performed well in league tables published by the Department for Education last month. Pupils were assessed in reading, writing, and maths and expected to reach a Level 4 standard in all. Level 4 indicates that they can spell properly, start to use grammatically complex sentences and multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 or 100. Our Lady of Lourdes school topped the table in Wanstead, with 93% of its 58 pupils reaching Level 4 and 41% attaining Level 5.
Last year was a difficult time for Snaresbrook Primary School, having been deemed 'inadequate' by Ofsted in July 2013. However, in October 2014, Ofsted re-inspected the school – which is located on Meadow Walk, South Woodford – and it has since been recognised as 'good' in all areas. "This is due to the hard work of the executive headteacher, new staff, the governing body and, of course, the children. In national tests they achieved significantly above average in both key stages in 2013 and 2014," said parent Debbie Watson.

FOr The Bungalow Café was established in 1956 by two Irish ladies, who started this restaurant as a tea and scones shop. Then, in the 1960s, it was turned into a café diner. In the 1980s it was taken over by our predecessor, who ran it until 2001. Over the years, The Bungalow Café has become a landmark in Wanstead and thrives on keeping its prices low and its quality high. In 2011, it was decided that The Bungalow Café needed a face lift and a little TLC, so with that in mind, we extended our hours of trade and started to open Sundays. We also updated and improved our menu, offering home-cooked meals at affordable prices. Although our menu stays the same during the day, we also offer the public the chance to test their taste buds at our restaurant after the hours of 6pm Thursday to Saturday. We were helped to create

That's life... As new life drawing classes get underway at Wanstead House…
…tutor Patrick Purcell offers some insight into capturing the human form
T
raditionally, the human figure has been the subject of art for centuries, and provides infinite possibilities for close observation and varied depiction. In past centuries, art students were sometimes required to spend many months drawing classical statues 'from the antique' before they were allowed to progress to working with live models. Aspiring female artists were generally barred from the life room at institutions such as the Royal Academy until the late 19th century, lest they somehow be corrupted by such an unladylike activity, even if the models were semiclothed. There are many approaches to drawing, from methodical and controlled, to energetic and anxious as effort is made to render what is observed to the paper. Edgar Degas made many excellent life studies in preparation for his paintings and likened the creation of his art to the meticulous planning of a crime, while Giacometti's drawings often reflected his obsessive and uncertain nature with investigative
lines, not hiding how they were constructed. Auguste Rodin's figure drawings, in contrast to the physicality of his more familiar sculptures, were often fluid, with ethereal movement, almost spectre-like, yet he considered them the 'key' to his work. An account of Austrian artist Egon Schiele – whose often controversial and disturbing work could be seen recently at the Courtauld Gallery in a rare exhibition for UK viewers – observed him drawing very directly, without using a rubber or hiding changes as he worked. From Old Master drawings (and paintings), visible alterations became known as pentimenti, from the Italian 'to repent'. Not a behaviour that Schiele and his lifestyle would otherwise be associated with. As if to emphasise its sometimes surprising importance in more contemporary artistic training and practice, Bridget Riley (an artist strongly identified with her abstract so-called 'op art') still cites life drawing as "paving the way" and as an "exercise in looking, an enquiry, a way of finding out, but the first thing I discover is I do not know".

Attending a life drawing class regularly is a great way to learn how to look more closely and thus to learn how to draw from observation. It is recommended to start with a 2B or 3B pencil (a soft grade that allows for more subtle shading) and ideally, an A3 or A2 sketch pad of cartridge paper (so called because a similar heavy paper was originally used to line artillery cartridges). If the budget is tight, however, any reasonably thick paper can be used. Charcoal is a popular drawing alternative and the compressed form produces rich velvety marks. The basic elements of a drawing are line, tone (light and dark), shape and sometimes colour. As with many skills, regular practice is often the key to progress and success, especially early on. Not taking what we see for granted and an openness to being positively surprised by what we create may allow us to produce more memorable work. While the challenge can be daunting at times, at best the act of drawing from life can be a form of concentrated absorption, like a meditation that refreshes and invigorates, increasing awareness outside of drawing. If a drawing does not go as well
as hoped – and sometimes we can be our own worst critic – try to remember there will usually be another pose along quite soon and move on. The life classes at Wanstead House have always had a wide range of students, from beginners and improvers to experienced artists. The emphasis in the informal but serious classes is on one-to-one assistance from the tutor and working at your own pace in a supportive, friendly atmosphere. We usually have a different male or female model each week. They come from many walks of life, some are actors and dancers, but we have also had a retired barrister. A nine-week life drawing class begins at Wanstead House on 11 January. For more information, visit wansteadhouse.co.uk

Christmas leftovers Councillor Colin Cronin is inviting suggestions on how to spend the excess left in the kitty from last year's Wanstead Christmas tree appeal, which, thanks to local generosity, eclipsed its £3,000 target
C
hristmas 2014 certainly brought out the best in Wanstead folk and really showed our community spirit, not least because of the way we pulled together to provide our annual Christmas tree. Special thanks go to the tree's sponsors and contributors, but also to local resident Sally Humphries who, with many years of experience in arranging Oxford Street's Christmas lights, was instrumental in ensuring a fantastic display. The level of appreciation was certainly felt at the tree's switch-on when local councillors were joined by the Riverside Brass Quintet and choirs from Wanstead Church School, Our Lady of Lourdes School, Churchfields Junior School and the choir of Christ Church Wanstead at a Saturday afternoon ceremony that attracted over 1,000 people. Even the best laid plans don't always run smoothly, however, and a minor technical issue saw the switch-on delayed by an hour, which local resident Greg Dolph captured perfectly in his humorous verse: There was a Councillor named Cronin, Whose job it was to switch the lights on-in. He flicked the switch, There was a glitch, And we were left a groanin'. Thankfully, the delay didn't detract from a wonderful ceremony of carol singing, with many residents asking if we can have a similar event held on a Saturday each year in the future. We will certainly look to achieve that, though perhaps with increased amplification, crowd barriers and a working switch next time! Final accounting is now being completed and we will begin contacting contributors over the coming weeks about how to use the surplus cash remaining in the fund. Suggestions so far have included keeping it for a tree next Christmas, donating it to the Wanstead playground fund (which local parents are launching this month) and installing ping-pong tables in the park. We are still accepting suggestions until 18 January
and everyone is welcome to contribute their ideas. Voting will only be open to the tree's contributors however, and they will be emailed the list of the top 10 suggestions after 9 January, with the results being announced in February. Until then, every best wish for a happy and peaceful 2015. Suggestions for how to use the surplus Christmas tree appeal funds can be emailed to colin.cronin@redbridge.gov.uk or posted to Cllr Colin Cronin, 128-142 High Road, Ilford, IG1 1DD. Garden gold The Friends of Wanstead Parklands have made a couple of unexpected discoveries during recent surveys of local gardens – a gold ring and a silver coin from the Ottoman Empire. Richard Arnopp reports
T
he Friends of Wanstead Parklands were approached by a householder in the area north of Wanstead Park, as she had found mystery foundations buried in her front garden. The Friends, who have been investigating the archaeology of the park for almost a decade, believed that they may have belonged to a demolished 18th century building that was part of the Wanstead Estate. Although the area where the brickwork was found was not readily accessible, the Friends offered to carry out a survey to the rear garden instead, using ground penetrating radar and a metal detector. The radar survey proved to be inconclusive. However, as the metal detectorist was coming to the end of his sweep over the garden, he discovered the ring. It is heavy and made of 22 carat gold, but the hallmarks show that it is not ancient. The householder suspects that it may be a lost wedding band and, in view of the fact that it may have sentimental value, is now offering to reunite it with its owner. A convincing description of the ring, together with the location and circumstances of its loss, will be required before it is handed over. Only a few days later, the Ottoman coin was discovered during another archaeological survey in a garden in the same road as the ring. Vesta Curtis, curator of Middle East coins at the British Museum, subsequently confirmed that it was a "kurus" (pronounced "kurush"), minted in Constantinople in 1775, during the reign of Abdul Hamid I. The design on the obverse ("heads") side consists of the Sultan's "tughra" – a calligraphic signature that was affixed to official documents, carved on his seal and stamped on coins issued during his reign. Underneath is his accession year (1773). The reverse ("tails") side carries the Ottoman Turkish inscription "Sultan ül berreyn ve hakan ül bahreyn es sultan ibn es sultan" ("Sultan, Great Khan [i.e. Emperor] over both lands [i.e. Europe and Asia] and both seas [i.e the Black Sea and Mediterranean], the Sultan of Sultans").
The area in which the coin was found was a peripheral area of the later (post-1760) pleasure gardens of Wanstead House. Amusingly, there is a known connection of Wanstead Park with the Ottoman Empire, in the form of the brief, and disastrous, sojourn of William Pole-Wellesley at the embassy to the Sublime Porte a few years before his marriage. However, the coin is most likely to have been a souvenir or curiosity and could have been lost at any time between the date it was struck and the arrival of the present owners of the property where it was found. The two items came to light as part of a garden archaeology project being trialled by the Friends. They are planning to offer an archaeological survey using ground penetrating radar and metal detecting to those residents who live in or close to the historic Wanstead House estate, and would welcome enquiries from anyone who may be curious about what lies beneath their properties. Please be aware that not all gardens are suitable for geophysical survey. If a survey reveals anything of potential archaeological interest, the Friends can offer free evaluation trenching conducted by qualified archaeologists. A report will be produced and lodged with the English Heritage Greater London Historic Environment Record for posterity. To offer any information relating to the lost ring, or to find out more about the Friends' garden archaeology project, email info@wansteadpark.org.uk

Rent recovery rules Last year, the rules relating to the recovery of rental arrears were changed. Ruhul Ameen, a partner in the civil litigation department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explains the problems landlords now face
O
n 6 April 2014, a new set of rules relating to the recovery of rental arrears by seizing tenants' goods came into force. The new rules, whilst seeking to protect tenants' human rights and create a more level playing field between landlord and tenant, may have gone too far, replacing what was a relatively simple and effective process with something far more technical and difficult to enforce. The Commercial Rent Arrears Recovery (CRAR) procedure is set out in the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007 and the Taking Control of Goods Regulations 2013. The ancient right of distress has been abolished. Prior to April 2014, landlords had recourse to the common law self-help remedy of distress, which enabled them to seize a tenant's goods if the tenant failed to comply with a lease obligation to make a payment reserved as rent, provided it was for a certain amount. Distress was a cheap and effective way of recovering rent arrears. It was widely used by landlords for payments. An important part of distress was that it could take tenants by surprise (no prior notice was required, except in certain insolvency situations), meaning that the tenant did not have an opportunity to put their goods out of the landlord's reach. In practice, the fact that bailiffs turned up was often sufficient encouragement for the tenant to pay up, without any goods having to be sold by the bailiff. The new procedures are much stricter, and several conditions must be met before CRAR can be used: zz CRAR only applies to leases of commercial premises and can only be used if the lease is in writing. It does not apply to residential premises or where part of the premises are used for residential purposes. zz CRAR only applies to the main rent, VAT and interest. It does not apply to other payments
reserved as rent, such as service charges, insurance premiums and rates. zz CRAR can only be exercised by certified enforcement agents and the tenant must be given seven days' notice. zz The tenant must be at least seven days in arrears before CRAR can be used. zz In addition, there is guidance about tenants' goods that cannot be seized. Once goods have been seized, the tenant must be given an inventory of those goods by the enforcement agent as soon as reasonably possible. The seized goods must be valued within seven days and then sold or disposed of for the best price that can reasonably be obtained. The requirement to give prior notice has emasculated CRAR and undermined its effectiveness. In view of the fact that distress was a regularly used and potent remedy for landlords where there were rent and service charge arrears, this statutory change creates a serious issue for landlords. For more information and advice on CRAR and other legal issues, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000 or visit wiseman.co.uk

Who you gonna call? Is your issue a matter for the police, the local council or another organisation? PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team offers guidance on who to call
W
ho should you call? What organisation is most appropriate to contact in any given situation? Is your issue a matter for the police, the council or another organisation? Here's a brief guide to point you in the right direction. Lost property Items found in a shop or on public transport should be handed to staff where the item was located. Only property found in the street should be handed in to the police, and only if you cannot track down the owner. If it looks like it might have been involved in a crime, please wear gloves to preserve any forensic opportunities, and either bring it to your nearest police station or contact point, or call 101 to arrange collection. Issues on Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park The Epping Forest Keeper Service looks after Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park and they should be made aware of fly-tipping and any issues involving the environment. Visit cityoflondon.gov.uk/epping or call 020 8532 1010. Call the police for joyriding, antisocial behaviour and drugs, as these are criminal activities. If it is an emergency situation, for example the crime is taking place there and then, you can call 999. Otherwise, call 101. Noise complaints and neighbour disputes The council have a noise complaints team and can also act as mediators between neighbours. Firstly, try and talk to your neighbours like adults and be civil to each other. If communication breaks down, contact the Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) Team on 020 8478 4679. Antisocial behaviour is a council matter, but threats to safety are a police issue. If this is the case, call 999 if you are in immediate danger. Otherwise, call 101. Traffic and parking These are managed by the council, including parking issues outside schools. However, if you think that a vehicle might have been abandoned, lost or stolen, firstly look at the tax disc. Does it match the registration number? Is it badly parked
or does it stand out? If so, call police on 101. If it turns out to be stolen, it should be removed within a few days. Please remember that tax discs are being phased out. Stray and injured animals Animal groups like the RSPCA (0300 1234 999) and Stray Dogs (0844 482 8337) have very effective powers to help animals in need. Handyperson scheme This is run by the council to help elderly and vulnerable persons with DIY jobs around the house. Call 020 8501 7778. 999 is still the emergency number and is free to call on all phones and networks. 101 is a non-emergency police number. It can also be used for enquiries and getting in contact with your local team. The cost of this call is 15p, regardless of duration. Redbridge Council's main switchboard is 020 8554 5000. For more information, contact the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team on 020 8345 2832

Babies and toddlers love music, but did you realise it also helps to stimulate their speech and language development and boost their creativity and social skills? Marie-Claire Dorking reports
F
or many parents, joining a local music class is an excuse to get out of the house, but musical playgroups are also a fun and interactive way of boosting your child's development. Suzi Harnett, founder of JingleBop music and movement classes, explains: "There is so much research explaining the importance of music in aiding early development and this is recognised in the EYFS framework." Your little one may not turn out to be a baby Beethoven, but studies have shown that taking them along to a music group can encourage social interaction, improve speech and language and help develop fine motor skills. Singing songs and rhymes with your baby has been scientifically proven to help with language development. "The rhythms and repetitive language in the songs make it easier for babies to learn language skills," explains Louise Parker, a specialised speech and language teacher. When babies and toddlers listen to music, their ears are learning to hear similarities and differences in sounds. And there are benefits for little ones using instruments at a young age too. "Using musical instruments with a simple beat helps teach patterning and rhythm, which are helpful in language development," says Louise. "The combination of rhythm, rhyme and melody provides reinforcing cues that make words in songs easier to remember than words alone." Music classes help babies and toddlers develop their confidence, self-esteem and social interaction with other tots. Children making music together learn to co-operate and this in turn helps them to gain confidence and pride in what they are achieving. Suzi has countless examples of babies and toddlers whose confidence and social skills have developed as a result of attending classes. "I had a little girl join last year who was painfully shy. After a couple of months, she started to sing and join in the songs with the other children in her class. The turnaround was amazing."
'Mindfulness' is the buzz word du jour and has far-reaching benefits for babies and toddlers. Put simply, mindfulness is learning to live in the moment. Music classes can help encourage children to appreciate and enjoy what they are doing right now. There are techniques parents can do to encourage mindfulness while in the class; ask your child: "Can you hear the sound the drum makes?" This knack of bringing yourself into the moment is a vital skill for children to have in modern life. The more positive memories little ones store, the better equipped they will be to deal with stresses and strains in the future. Children have to have good attention and listening skills to learn, and music classes can really help these skills develop. "Singing and hearing music teaches babies how to listen, how to enjoy listening and how to think while listening,' explains Louise Parker. "These are all crucial skills for development." And according to experts, good listening skills go hand in hand with school achievement. Research has shown that children with a strong sense of beat are more likely to read well and do well at maths, so heading to a local music class could help your child become a baby Einstein. Healthy New Year Looking after your digestive system should be one of the first steps towards any health or weight loss goals this year, says local nutritionist Nicola Shubrook
I
t's another year, and once again we will all make promises to ourselves about what we want to achieve in 2015. If looking after your health or your weight is one of your resolutions this year, then your digestive system is a good place to start. Your digestive system is often referred to as 'the second brain', due to its complex network of neurons that go about breaking down, mixing, contracting and absorbing all of the food and fluids that you consume on a daily basis. This fuel is then used to power every other system in the body and supply it with all the essential nutrients you need to survive. Quite simply, if your gut is in good health, then you are more likely to be in good health too. However, pretty much all of us have and will suffer with a stomach-related symptom – such as constipation, diarrhoea, heartburn or bloating – at some point this year, and for some this could be a daily or weekly occurrence. Over-the-counter remedies, such as laxatives and antacids, may help to relieve your symptoms, but all too often we rely on these 'solutions' too much and, in fact, you may be adding fuel to the fire, not to mention adding possible side effects. So what about making your first health resolution of the year to be to get to the root cause of your stomach problems, especially if you suffer from symptoms on a regular basis? Here are some basic steps to start you off: zz Avoid starchy foods, such as white bread, white pasta, white rice and fried foods. These are all inflammatory to your digestive system and are naturally hard for you to digest. zz Ditch fizzy drinks. They contain no nutritional value whatsoever, and the combination of sugar or artificial sweeteners, together with the bubbles will easily cause bloating and indigestion.
zz Cut back on salt. Too much salt in your diet leads to water retention, so keep an eye on how much salt you are having in sauces, dressings, cured meats and fast food, and avoid adding more to your meals. zz Drink plenty of water. This will help to keep your bowels hydrated, which in turn will help to 'keep things moving', preventing any nasty, unwanted blockages. zz Listen to your body. If you experience any symptoms, such as cramps or bloating soon after a meal, then start to write down what you have eaten – you'll soon start to see a pattern. You can then avoid these 'trigger foods' and the symptoms should ease. It may feel like a challenge at first, but simple steps will mean that you are more likely to stick to your resolutions. Angels in Wanstead
Lola Shorter
L
ola Shorter started working 'front of house' at Zoology because that's what she had done in previous jobs, but while there, got more and more interested in hairdressing. "It suits me and it's lovely. I love to meet people and love the fact that I know all the clients". As she got more involved with the work and the people in Zoology, she became more interested in hairdressing too. She explained what happened next: "I did a blow dry of Annie's hair. It took all night to do but I was surprised that it looked OK! Later, Mark and Zena suggested I get more involved in the hairdressing. Now I do both. It's great. Even if I'm with my clients, I know everyone else and about their lives and everything. I love it!" Lola is far more involved with Zoology than you'd think. This year, when proprietor Mark Mountney told the team he wanted to do something big for a cancer charity, she got stuck right in. Lola told me how it unfolded: "We couldn't fit it into a day so we decided to do it over a whole week. We wanted to make it fun. Normal things can be repetitive so I suggested we do different themed dress-ups to keep everyone in the spirit. It will be varied and over the week there will be three, maybe four days, when everyone dresses up. The charity week will be over half-term and the kids will think it's amazing that Cinderella (for example) will be cutting their hair." I asked how Lola had become part of it. She admits – with characteristic modesty – that while she and Becks will probably be doing a lot of the administration and the themed days were her idea, she emphasises it's very difficult to know who an idea started with: "We're a team. Someone says something and someone else says
that we could do this or that, and we get each other's ideas and add to them and they grow and you just can't remember. We all have different skills and ideas and that is what makes it so much fun". Other events include a cut-a-thon, for which Lola is ready: "The main idea of the cut-a-thon is that all the stylists and colourists will donate all the money they earn that day to charity. Normally a cut takes between 50 and 60 minutes, so if the stylists agree to be fed on the move or take a 10 minute break instead of an hour, I can schedule more people in". In 'Drag Queen Bingo', some of Zoology's talented male members will add spice to the salon one evening. Lola assures me it will be hysterically funny. She's going to be involved in arranging some of the prizes and hopes there will be hampers, cut-and-blow-dry giveaways and a funny booby prize. 'Zoology come-backs' will involve old staff donating time for the charity. For a 'salon takeover', Lola explains: "we will be the clients' assistants or the clients can blow dry our hair. They can learn techniques as they do it." This idea, like many others, is still growing. Mark wants to do some wig cutting and some clients have said in passing that they'd like to work in the salon for a day, so the inspiration comes from that. Lola is ready to facilitate as necessary and I get the impression that some of her work has already started. So Lola has her work cut out. In addition to her normal day she'll be co-ordinating, administrating and donating what she earns to the charity. But the reason she's this month's angel is that she doesn't see there's anything special in her role, and keeps crediting the others.

music is key Derek Farr, secretary of the East London and Essex Electronic Keyboard Club, looks back on three decades of music and invites you to join them at Wanstead Library this month for their first concert of the year
T
he East London and Essex Electronic Keyboard Club (formerly known as the East London and Essex Organ Society) is now in its 33rd year. Founded by budding organ players and encouraged by their organ teacher, Martyn Rice, and David Thomas (our club president), the East London and Essex Organ Society was started in July 1982. The club's first meeting venue, like so many organ clubs, was a public house. For us, it was the Maypole in Barkingside. In those early days, the members entertained themselves, playing organs brought along by our president from the local music shop. Members would also bring along food they had made themselves and a good time was had by all. The society started with a membership of 53 and this number soon rose to 64 – not bad for a new club. The pub soon became unsatisfactory, so a search was made to find a new meeting place. Wanstead Library, having a hall called the Churchill Room, looked promising – that was back in 1983 and it has proved very successful, and we have remained there ever since. Our first artistes were unknown players at that time. To name a few, they included David Thomas, Danny O'Sullivan, and a young man called Mark Brown. As the membership levels grew, some professional organists were booked to entertain the members. Artiste fees were between £80 and £100 for a concert (a lot different now!). Some of the first real professionals were artistes you may know: Steve Lowdell, Byron Jones, Robert Beadle and Harry Jackson. The committee today still endeavours to engage the very best artistes, including some up-and-coming new faces. It is the club's aim to encourage new talent, as well as supporting established organists. Today, because of our roots, we still hold one members' night a year, where our members entertain us. These evenings have proved very popular.
Matthew Bason will perform his one-man music show this month
The club's first and only cancellation of a concert was way back in January 1987, and this was due to severe weather conditions. Some special events have been organised in previous years, including two trips to Blackpool to see the lights, with an afternoon visit to the famous Tower Ballroom – a must for organ enthusiasts. We celebrated the millennium by having two great artistes perform for us, Tim Flint and Trevor Daniels. We produce a newsletter every month with a brief resume of the previous month's concert, followed by details of the next artiste due to play. It also includes information regarding concerts at other local clubs, plus other items relating to organs and keyboards that may be of interest to members. The East London and Essex Electronic Keyboard Club meet at Wanstead Library on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.50pm. The next meeting will take place on 14 January and will feature a one-man music show by Matthew Bason (members: £5; guests: £7; under 16s: £1). For more information, call 020 8530 3717

Paula Colby will be giving a talk about SSAFA, the UK's oldest Armed Forces charity, at a Wanstead Park Women's Club event this month. Here she presents an introduction to the work they do
T
he vision and drive of one man stands at the heart of the UK's oldest Armed Forces charity. In February 1885, as the Second Expeditionary Force set sail for Egypt, Major James Gildea wrote to The Times appealing for funds and volunteers to look after families left behind. Within three months, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association was born. After the establishment of the Royal Air Force (in 1918), the organisation became a charity called the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA). Since then, we've supported millions of people, and millions more are eligible for help. Young and old alike, anyone who has ever served in our Forces is eligible for SSAFA's support. We understand that being in the Forces has an impact on people's lives and sometimes they might need a bit of practical help. We also know the challenges everyone faces are different. So we are committed to being here whenever and wherever they need us. At SSAFA, we've been supporting our Forces and their families for more than 125 years. Today, we continue to help thousands of people in hundreds of different ways. Our community volunteers provide practical support to serving members of the Forces and their families on bases at home and overseas, from a friendly chat to assistance during operational deployment. Our teams of trained volunteers also provide practical and emotional support to veterans and their families, whether they served as a Regular or Reserve. We have a network of local branches, which means that help and advice is always close at hand. There are over 90 branches of SSAFA across the UK, supporting veterans and their families of all ages. We also have branches in Ireland, France and Germany. SSAFA's service volunteers are located in army garrisons, naval establishments and RAF bases, and provide a wide range of advice and support to servicemen and women
and their families. We also deliver health and social care services to the Armed Forces and their families in 13 countries around the world. SSAFA has developed specialist services to meet the unique challenges of service life. For example, we set up support groups for bereaved families and families of the wounded, injured and sick; we support families with children who have additional needs and disabilities; and we run a mentoring scheme for serving personnel returning to civilian life. Our vital work is funded by generous donations from our supporters, the public and other charities, and the profits from our health and social care services. SSAFA London North East – the local branch for this area – holds various fundraisers throughout the year and our next one will be a military concert at the Queen's Theatre in Hornchurch in April. Paula's talk for the Wanstead Park Women's Club will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 26 January, from 8pm (visitors: £1). Still Trail on the

am used to. To secure a place in an art gallery in the middle of the High Street was just an extra bonus, and although I was only able to exhibit three photographs, it was a start.
Art Trail Wanstead for me personally was the best opportunity to exhibit my work – virtually free of charge – and have all the publicity thrown in as well. It also meant that I had to print, mount and frame my work to an exhibition standard, which is not something I
Since last year's art trail finished, I have been thinking about this year's, for which I want to have a more coherent display. In 2014, the three images on display were The Lloyds in Reflection, Runway to St. Pauls and River Thames and Houses of Parliament with Big Ben at Dusk. Although all these images had an

architectural link, I still think that it was not coherent enough. My main passion is monochrome and architecture. I tend to favour monochrome because I find that quite often colour gets in the way and distracts from the actual message I wish to get across. That said, I am still in my infancy with black and white photography and have an awful lot to learn. So this year is going to be even busier, trying to get together a better and larger monochrome portfolio. I have
some ideas, from moody portraits to winter landscapes and architectural images. No doubt there will be a lot of research and study to try and pull it all together for the next art trail. Many happy returns Local accountant Alan Patient explains why more people may need to complete a tax return this month and highlights some of the ways businesses can put their financial affairs in order for the New Year
D
on't be caught out this year - the HM Revenue & Customs deadline of 31 January 2015 for 2013/14 selfassessment tax returns is fast approaching. You may be thinking: "Oh yes, I know all about that and it doesn't affect me," but this year many more people will be falling into the self-assessment regime due to the changes in child benefit legislation. In spite of press coverage during 2014, there will no doubt be some people who are unaware that they need to file a return. It really is a shame to see people caught out like this, but maybe this article will prompt some families to think about their own situation. Filing on time is even more essential because of the average increases in late filing penalties, which can easily soon amount to £1,000 or more. At this time of year, it is very easy to focus all of our attention on family, friends and festivities, and push less welcome tasks to the back of our minds. While everybody deserves a break over the Christmas and New Year period, there are now only a matter of weeks left before the deadline and if it is missed, the financial penalties will be applied – so if you are one of those people with an outstanding return, my advice would be to get to grips with it as soon as possible. The New Year is always a good time to put your financial affairs in order, and there may be some business people out there operating as a sole trader when it would be much more tax effective to form a limited company. It's not always totally cut-and-dried, but broadly, if your turnover is around the £60,000 level, it would make sound financial sense to explore whether you would be better off incorporating. Also, a limited company can give an impression that you are the face of a far larger operation working hard in the background – this can potentially open more doors when approaching larger prospective clients.
Being voluntarily VAT registered can also help fledgling businesses seem well-established to other businesses they wish to work with. The VAT threshold is now £81,000, but there are a number of different schemes available, such as the Cash Accounting Scheme and Flat Rate Scheme. The VAT Flat Rate Scheme helps those businesses who are in the service sector with less than £150,000 turnover make a profit out of being VAT registered. By charging clients the full rate of VAT and only paying over a reduced percentage to HMRC, businesses can retain more of their hardearned money – and really, isn't that what all of us want to do? Developing countries Next month, local resident Holly McGlinchey will be travelling to Nicaragua for three months as part of a team of volunteers on a country development programme
T
he projects I will be working on in Nicaragua will be varied, depending on what the area is in need of. The main goal will be to focus on community resilience, the provision of safe water and sanitation, and natural resource management. We will also work with local project partners who provide expertise and help strengthen the impact of what we achieve in the community. The charity I am working with is called Raleigh International, who are partners of the government organisation International Citizen Services (ICS). ICS is a development programme that brings together 18 to 25 year olds from all backgrounds to fight poverty overseas and in the UK. Raleigh International are a sustainable development charity who are currently celebrating their 25th anniversary. As a sustainable charity, they work in remote rural areas to sustainably manage natural resources and to protect vulnerable environments. After leaving Trinity Catholic High School in 2011 and continuing onto college, I found myself settling straight down into the working world. Growing up I have always been a practical person and found that work suited my skills best. At Trinity, I was once given the opportunity to travel and work abroad, but regrettably declined it. I think it was because I was at the age where having a social life was more important, and I completely missed how amazing the opportunity was. Fortunately, I am still at the age where I can leave my job and go out and achieve something like this. I think it's so important for young adults to know and be made aware of how important it is to live life, travel, see the world and help others. For me, not being an academic student, I believed that finding a job was my only option. During 2014, I realised travelling and helping other people had always been something I wanted to achieve and

if I didn't do it now, I didn't know when I would. The great thing about Raleigh International is that you don't need cash, skills or qualifications to take part. As part of my commitment to ICS, I must fundraise at least ÂŁ800 before going overseas. As well as generous donations from family and friends, I held a fundraising raffle and stall at a local Christmas fair last month. I have now reached my target but will continue to raise more money and spread awareness in the run up to my trip. When I am away, I hope to learn more about myself as a person and others. I hope to meet new people and learn about their way of life. I also hope to gain new skills, qualities, experiences, memories and, most of all, make a positive difference to their community. I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and donations, the local businesses who donated prizes to my raffle, the very friendly and helpful staff at Raleigh International, and also Lucy and Noel at the Nightingale Pub in Wanstead, where the raffle was held. For more information on Raleigh International, visit raleighinternational.org To donate, visit wavidi.com/HMcGlinchey

Martin&Co sales & lettings
Lettings We have experienced an increase in the number of ‘would-be landlords’ purchasing from other agents coming to us to seek lettings advice. We believe strongly in always being upfront with prospective landlords, whether they are our clients or not. As a landlord myself, I know that yields and all projected figures need to be discussed in reality and worst case scenarios, not what rental figure landlords hope they will achieve or what the selling agent tells them. Martin & Co Wanstead have also started producing a monthly newsletter centred on the Wanstead lettings market. It’s the most up-to-date and scientific estate agent newsletter that I’ve come across and we are very proud of it. The speed with which we let property last year also increased, which meant less void periods for our landlords. Speed of let is a combination of correct pricing, good condition and knowledgeable staff – experts in their lettings field. Correct pricing and condition is something we specialise in, we are able to evidence all of our rental valuations with factual lets and are able to manage very cost-effective upgrades to properties.
