WELCOME Your story begins here Waiariki Institute of Technology is one of the fastest growing and fastest improving tertiary institutes in New Zealand, according to the government’s latest Education Performance Indicators report released in July 2013.

High quality qualifications range from certificates, diplomas and degrees to graduate and postgraduate qualifications. Our new Master of Management can be undertaken with an optional endorsement in Business, Health, Hospitality, or Information Technology in order to tailor your studies. Please request a copy of the Master of Management booklet or view a copy online at www.waiariki.ac.nz. The main goal of the institute is to create workready graduates who have the tools to become successful in their chosen field, are satisfied yet challenged in their careers, and able to contribute to their local economy. The government report shows this goal is being met as more of our students are completing their studies, achieving qualifications, and progressing further either in their studies or careers. Each year our friendly, knowledgeable staff teach approximately 8,000 future nurses, teachers, IT or communications experts, artists, business owners, tradespeople, chefs, tourism or hospitality operators, fashion designers, farm managers, forestry or wood manufacturing specialists, to name just a few areas of the possibilities here at Waiariki. Our main campus is located in beautiful Rotorua, the country’s tourism capital. Additional campuses are located in Taupo, Tokoroa, Tauranga and Whakatane. The institute is distinctly bicultural, honouring the country’s Māori heritage. We look forward to meeting you and playing a part in developing your career pathway.

graduate PROFILE Qiao Hao

Certificate in English Improving her English through studies at Waiariki Institute of Technology has opened up a world of possibilities for Qiao Hao. Originally from China, she moved to New Zealand four years ago after marrying a New Zealander and decided she needed to improve her English before choosing a career path. Qiao Hao has a master’s degree in science from China and is considering a couple of options – secondary school teaching or working in a medical laboratory. The mother of two is leaning toward the latter and after a year studying English at Waiariki, has embarked on a Graduate Diploma in Science paper at the Auckland University of Technology where she attends once a week. Her English classes at Waiariki gave her the confidence to take her science studies further. “Some of the studies I am doing now are quite challenging but I am finding I can cope with it – I don’t think that would have been possible if I had not improved my English through Waiariki first,” she says. Qiao Hao found the environment at the Rotorua campus to be very supportive with small classes providing plenty of opportunities for valuable one-on-one time with tutors. Coming from Tianjan, China, a city of more than 10 million where she taught primary school classes with 200 students, she found herself in a class of only about 15 English students at Waiariki. “Moving to Rotorua was a very big change for me … but it has been a good change for me,” she says. “I’m very happy here – the future looks good.” Whatever path she ends up choosing after finishing her current studies, Qiao Hao says improving her English has been the first important step to helping her achieve her goals in her new home.

Youth Guarantee scheme pays tuition fees Youth Guarantee is a government initiative to support 16- to 19-year-olds to participate in education or training in order to increase skills in our community’s youth. Through the scheme, the government pays for the first year of tertiary fees for these students who enrol at Waiariki. The goal of Youth Guarantee is to see that all young people achieve at least NCEA Level 2 which means they will gain the foundation skills and competencies to further their study pathway and career goals. Specifically tailored foundation programmes cover general literacy and numeracy skills in addition to ‘tasters’ in various trades. Success in these programmes will better prepare students for future success at higher levels of study and help inform decisions around vocational interests. Youth Guarantee students receive extra learning support to improve their literacy and numeracy, individualised learning and career planning advice and support, and participate in national level testing. Some conditions apply. The Youth Guarantee website contains additional helpful information and guidance and can be found at http://youthguarantee.net.nz. What can you study?
