President’s Message

Dear VSNA Members & Patrons, Sharanu… In the previous quarter VSNA Newsletter – Baandhavya, we presented you few highlights of the 2016 VSNA Convention that was successfully concluded in the July 4th weekend. In this 3rd Quarter Newsletter, we present you additional highlights such as VSNA award winners and the Convention Trust Fund donors. The VSNA Maryland Chapter did a commendable job in hosting the 2016 VSNA Convention, and the VSNA community is grateful to the leadership team of Maryland Chapter. The convention had about 700 members in attendance. The convention team, led by G. Jagadeesh was highly appreciated not only for the spiritual contents of the convention, but also the interactive way, the Anubhava Ghosti was conducted and also the precise times the start and end of each program was managed. The team received very positive feedback from attendees. The feedback and additional photos are presented this newsletter. The team is now in the process of finalizing the souvenir and the budget. The election committee has submitted the final list of elected members for BOD and BOR, and the list is given in the Central VSNA updates section. The bylaws submitted by the bylaw-committee are being reviewed by the board of directors and board of regents. We plan to finalize the bylaws and send it to the general body for the final approval. Once approved, the bylaws become effective January 1, 2017. This newsletter contains spiritual content through Vachana descriptions and articles related to Veerashaivism. I am thankful to all contributors to this newsletter – Baandhavya, and the VIRC-Newsletter committee for scrutinizing the quality of the articles. Happy reading!!

Regards, Channu Kambalyal President, VSNA

ಎಲ್ಲ ರಂತೆ ನುಡಿದು Sajjan Shiva Author of: Vachana A Week Blog Post

Vachana in Kannada:

Vachana in English:

ಎಲ್ಲ ರಂತೆ ನುಡಿದು, ಎಲ್ಲ ರಂತೆ ನಡೆದು

They speak like everybody else, they live like everybody else. Because their daily life is like everybody else’s, can those who have seen the Truth, be treated like everybody else? Is the knowledge of the Truth shining and illuminating in the center of their mind, hollow? Even if it is not burning, can the cinder be eaten by worms, Guhesvara?

English Commentary: In this Vachana, Allama Prabhu describes the characteristics of the illuminated beings who have succeeded in obtaining the divine awareness. They speak like everybody else and live like everybody else. Their daily life is nothing different from everybody else’s. But, their inner nature is one of subtlety and equanimity. They cannot be treated like everyone else since they are not perturbed by the ups and downs of life. They are in this world, go through the normal activities of the world, but not affected by the world in any way. The knowledge and awareness of the divine is shining in them. It may not show up as burning fire externally, but it simply illuminates and shines within. No worm (meaning, no aspect of this world) will be able to quench this fire. These individuals, illuminated within by the divine awareness, are here, but not here. Let us be the lotuses that grow in the water but not drenched in it!

2016 VSNA Convention Highlights & Feedback Feedback from Convention

The 2016 VSNA Convention was a great success. Thanks to the vibrant Maryland Chapter for all their hard work and dedication to uphold the mission of the organization and making things happen by hosting the convention to its perfection. The perfection of the event is evident by the feedback received the 2016 Convention Committee as follows: ************* Hearty Congratulations Convention Committee Members! Guru Basavanna is known for his humility, generosity and compassion -- you weaved them all into action very graciously at the memorable Maryland Convention. Your enthusiasm under the leadership of Dr. Jagadeesh illuminated like the July 4 th fireworks! Pravachana by Param Poojya Sree Siddeshwar Swamiji was very enlightening. As always, Poojya Sree Vachananda Swamiji’s yoga and linga puje were energizing and blissful. Number of Swamijis and Guest list was just about right. VSNA protocols were followed. Entertainment was geared toward Basava Tatva and Vachana Sahitya, a breath of fresh air! Youths were provided with a variety of activities and their participation was highlighted. Overall, the food was good, including the besan oondi shaped in the form of cookies! I hope that other VSNA Chapters follow in your footsteps and make every Convention as impressive as yours. Once again, my heartfelt Kudos to you! Laxmi Hiremath, California North Chapter ************* Obeisance to you all, Congratulations to you all for doing a wonderful job in arranging and conducting the convention. We enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for everything. Just a note about my observations: It was so nice to see that the Jeopardy contestants answered the final Jeopardy question correctly. But I was disappointed that they did not get the Shatsthala question, and answered the Ashtavarana and Panchachara questions. The most important part of our philosophy and practice is the Shatsthala. Everything is in the Shatsthala. Although the individual components of Ashtavarana and Panchachara are part of our practice, separate importance is not given. In Basavanna's vachana you will not find Ashtavarana and Panchachara mentioned as they are in Shivagamas. You, the Veerashaiva educators have to emphasize Shatsthala, and not Ashtavarana and Panchachara. Again, Congratulations, and thank you for everything. Sincerely, Linga Raju, New York Chapter ************* To the Conference chair, CONGRATULATIONS to the hosts of 2016 VSNA conference, for conducting in a efficient manner particularly punctuality is greatly appreciated, I am sure the responsibilities taken by the team leaders conducted themselves well seamlessly without any draw backs, exhibiting professionalism. Sundaresh Yajaman ************* Thank you very much for giving us the stage for 5 programs and accommodating NJ and supporting us. It was well done especially stage, entertainment, sound and lighting and Ballroom. Not to forget maintaining schedule, excellent job there.

12

Venue was very good, great company great programs and fun. Only drawback was food and beverages [honest feedback from the NJ team] Overall we enjoyed like crazy and came back making more friends and connected with many more wonderful Veerashaivas and can’t ask anything better than that! Thank You Mahashetty avre and Jagadeesh avre! Sharanu Sharanarthi. Gayi, New York-New Jersey Chapter ************* Dear Fellow Veerashaiva Sisters and Brothers of Maryland, We returned home yesterday. While driving 450 miles, all Malati and I were thinking about was the convention. All we came up with was one word "WOW!!!!" - "SUPERB!!!". Malati and I would like to offer our congratulations to all the members of Maryland Chapter for the magnificent convention meticulously planned, organized and conducted. The food was scrumptious and exceedingly tasteful. Once again, we say three cheers to you all Maryland Chapter's Members. With best wishes, Malati and Shekar Munavalli, NC Chapter ************* Dear Jagadeesh and Team, You all did an awesome job! The 2016 VSNA Convention was a great success in all respects. The combined opinion of our family: The topics and time was adequate. The variety of topics were relevant. The overall combination of events were balanced All the programs were of high quality The entertainment was also great. Children enjoyed visit to JSS and other programs Venue was great. Decoration very apt. Attendance was good for all events (I attended). In all a great success for 2016 Convention!! Our hearty congratulations to you and your team!!! (Hope you broke even!) With best wishes, Gitu, Tejas, Suma & Vijay Aivalli, Toronto Chapter ************* Hey Folks, Congratulations and Kudos! Fantastic convention! Somashekhar and Suma Bellary, Maryland Chapter ************* Chairman Jagadeesh and President Savitha and the team members, The convention was a great experience of satsanga and spirituality. The prompt execution of events was admirable. The venue was very accommodating. Food was plenty. The host members looked like they were on rollers, but always smiling and helpful. Indeed, we have established a higher bar for future conventions. Guruswamy Ayya, Virginia Chapter

************* Dear Jagadeesh and Team: This was outstanding convention!! I am so glad that we were part of this event. I and family thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. It was a very engaging event for all age groups. Very enthusiastic and welcoming hosts. Teamwork shined all through the event. Jagadeesh and team has raised the bar very high. Three cheers! Sharanarthi, Yuvaraj Patil, Texas-North Chapter ************* Namaskara, Would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the organizers and volunteers for the fabulous job they performed at 2016 VSNA convention. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay. High light for us was the spiritual presentation from pujya Siddeshwara swamiji. It would be great if he could be part of every VSNA convention. Thanking you, Rama Santhappa ************* Thank you for inviting us to participate as a guest and contributor to your yearly event. It was a lot of fun. The people and venue were beautiful, and many blessings for many more years of growth in your organization and membership:-)! To your continued success, Benjjamin K. Zales Investment Advisor Representative Arch Global Advisors 3718 Northern Blvd Ste., 305 Long Island City, NY 11101 ************* Dear Dr. G. Jagadeesh and MD convention team, I am pleased to send this note saying "Great Convention of 2016". It was just beautiful. We enjoyed every bit of it. I must say that each program item went right on-time as organizers planned. Good Food, great entertainment programs and what not? The captain of the ship and his team did an excellent job. Thank you all G. Doddamani, Detroit Chapter ************* Dear Friends, It gives me an immense pleasure in thanking you all and other Shiva Sharanas for outstanding execution of the 39th annual VSNA convention. Me and my kids truly enjoyed it. It was a great occasion for all of us to listen to the gurus who had more knowledge and life experience in following Guru Basananna's teachings. A visit to JSS spiritual place was a plus for the occasion. The most important that I like about this whole event was "starting the function on time and ending on time". Food was fabulous, drama and other cultural performance by sharanas was excellent.

14

It also gives me courage to offer any help in the future to help with organizing events like this. Please let me know how I can help to get this organization to higher level to reach out to veerashiva community. Sincerely, Naganna Channaveeraiah, MD, MBA, FAAFP, CPE, Florida Chapter ************* Rajiv, It was a super convention and you guys did a fantastic job. Typically, in VSNA they talk and talk and never implement anything. For the first time what was discussed in the last convention was put to action by MD (I know you and Leena are responsible for this). Every youth I spoke to had lots to say about this convention and activities. Even the kids who are below 18 never complained as they had activities to keep them busy. For the first time I didn't have to hear the word "Dad I am bored... from my younger daughter instead I got full details on what happened in the sessions. Thank you and enjoy rest of the summer. Shylendra Kumar, New England Chapter ************* It was a wonderful experience starting the day with yoga and linga pooja till the very end of the day with excellent cultural programs. Eesha, my 7 yr old daughter, attended and loved yoga as well:) In fact, we are trying to adapt exercising early in the morning as a routine. You and Jayashree Aunty have organized the program's so well and we appreciate all your hard work. The program was a great success. Regards, Jyothi Jagadeesh and family, New Jersey Chapter ************* Dear Jagadeesh, It is so nice that you found time to write such a nice note addressing both our group and to all attendees of convention. Both you and Jayashree worked so hard to make this convention a great event. Both of you deserve highest gratitude from all of us. Regards, Kotrappa and Chandra, Maryland Chapter ************* Dear Jagadeesh and VSNA team, Sorry for not responding earlier as we were still moving and just returned to Manchester, UK. It had been a wonderful journey for us going through 39th VSNA convention held at Turf Club. We enjoyed every bit of it. Programs in general well planned and well spanned. In particular, Cultural activities and daily yoga sessions were fantastic. Speakers were excellent and contents enlightening. Quizzes were fun and educative. Food gastronomically superb and surely everyone would have put on some weight. Enjoyed Rotti, Holige, home invented Basan burfy and mini sweets, etc. Decorations and arrangements both inside and outside were pleasant and eye catching with a perfect theme. What surprised us, the sense of involvement, harmony between different committees, youngsters taking active part and untiring hospitality flown everywhere. It was like one big big joint family putting their effort to make everyone happy. It is not easy to manage such a big gathering, but we should say it was perfectly coordinated and managed. Location was

15

superb, serene, relaxing and perfect for such a gathering. How 3 days passed no one could keep count. Overall, it had been a wonderful experience. Thanks for providing an opportunity for us to attend such a fantastic convention. We look forward to hear future conventions and wish everyone hearty congratulation in making this convention a great success. Convention gave us an opportunity to meet so many people; made new friends, revived many old friendships and it was a pleasure to see many elders participating. We will cherish the memories for long time. Sharnu Sharanaarthi, Dr Nataraj Gojanur & Karuna Gojanur 25 Kingsbury Drive, Wilmslow SK9 2GU, United Kigndom ************* Dear Jayashree and Jagadeesh, Sharanu what can I say! I do not know how to explain my emotions for your work in VSNA convention. Sorry for the delayed letter. I was not feeling well during convention. It took me this long to recuperate. You were amazing! Indians are not known for starting things on time. Especially Veerashaivas! Every event was ON TIME. My father would have come and personally admired your effort. You and your son and daughter did an amazingly great job. All I can say is HATS OFF. Sharanu sharanarthi Uma Ettigi and Family, Virginia Chapter *************

VSNA Local Chapters Updates VSNA – Florida Chapter We had 2 major activities during the fall season. One was the screening of the ‘Arivina Mane’ movie and the second one was a camping event, details of which are provided below. The Kannada move “Arivina Mane” (ಅರಿವನ ರ್ನೆ) was screened in Orlando, FL on September 23, 2016 and in Jacksonville, FL on September 25, 2016. This film is about Allama Prabhu (ಅಲ್ಲ ರ್ ಪ್ರ ಭು), saint, poet and provocateur. The 12th century was an important and auspicious era in Karnataka’s history producing many historical thinkers who regularly assembled at “House of Knowledge”, Anubhava Mantapa (ಅನುಭವ ಮಂಟಪ್) and was presided over by Allama Prabhu, regardless of case or creed, considering only dignity of labor. It is considered the world’s first parliament. The director of the movie Sri Shivananda Somappa flew in-person to promote the movie. He was happy with the interest shown for his move and also received a very good feedback about the quality and content of the movie. He later shared his thoughts about his future plans regarding more historical movies. Thanks to all the volunteers for their delicious food and donors, which allowed us to screen the movie for free while extending the invitation to all Kannadigas in both locations.

For the very first time, in response to overwhelming interest for outdoor VSNA meeting, we hosted a camping event at Lake Louisa state park, FL. The park covers about 4,500 acres and is noted for its beautiful lakes, rolling hills and scenic landscapes. About 50 VSNA members from the Florida chapter participated in the fun filled ~2 day camping from Friday, October 21st to Sunday, October 23rd. The event began with socializing on Friday night with hot Pizza and snacks. It was followed by a campfire which then turned to game time with Antakshari and other games. We witnessed strong performers who jogged our sweet memories with old melodious songs. Next day, some of the early risers took a morning hike into the trail, followed by a stumptous breakfast of Idly, Chutney & Sambar. Kids and adults then spent the next few hours rowing in Canoes around the big and scenic Dixie Lake. It was a beautiful Sunny day. During the evening, Naganna engaged kids and adults with engineering challenge game. We again had a big central campfire. People had great time eating, dancing, laughing and having fun throughout the day as the night folded against our wishes. As we started feeling more homely and comfortable, sadly it was a pack-up day. With the final group pictures and hugging each other, we cherished all the time we had together and hoped for more such gatherings in the future. Special thanks to all the organizers, volunteers and participants for making this a memorable event.

VSNA – Detroit Chapter On September 17th, 2016, the Detroit Chapter held its Ganesh Chaturthi Function. The event started with Basava Stuthi recitals and Mangalarathi. This lead to the cultural activities, which were performed mainly by the youth of the Detroit Chapter. From songs about Ganesha to cultural dances, the young members engaged the audience with wonderful portrayals of the Ganesha festival. Further, Mr. Vivek Ambardekar amused the Detroit Chapter members with his melodious voice and sang Bollywood songs. The cultural activities concluded with the Indian national anthem in celebration of India’s 70th year of independence. ****** VSNA – Connecticut Chapter Autumn 2016 heralded a new event in the VSNA-CT chapter, the Shivanidhi Dasoha Charity Event. An event encouraging Dasoha, a vision of many members VSCT members came to life on October 2nd, 2016. The day started off with a 1.5K Walkathon for the Seniors, many senior members of VSCT and also senior parents visiting from India participated in this. As this was going on, kids were engaged in fun team games organized by parent volunteers! The enthusiasm continued with the 1.5K run with participation from adults and kids. For some volunteers, the day started pretty early with setting up the stage (a beautiful fall themed decoration!), setting up the tents for fundraising activities and setting up tables for lunch, coffee, snacks etc. Then came time for the kids to show off their talent and hard work. Bake Sale organized by parents but facilitated by the baked goods from the Youth Volunteers! There were a variety of cupcakes – chocolate, vanilla, red velvet and even pineapple upside down cupcakes! Brownies were like an icing on the cake! Hot chocolate sales soared as the cold day demanded something warm, and what a perfect choice! Yummy hot chocolate! Some members came up with innovative chutney pudi sales for fundraising. As the fundraising sales ended, lunch organized by volunteers was served. Thanks to the volunteers a hot and satisfying lunch was enjoyed by all. This was followed by more fundraising activities like face painting and henna tattoos. Little kids suddenly transformed into tigers, foxes, princesses and monsters! And then onto beautiful delicate henna designs on their hands! Both activities were much enjoyed by kids and adults. There were also volleyball and throw ball games going on in parallel which provided for a range of activities to suit different tastes. As evening came, snacks, again thanks to volunteers, were arranged for. Along with tea and coffee. President of VSCT and some other members talked about this event and also certificates were presented to all the youth committee members that participated. The nonperishables collection box at the registration desk was soon full! The day ended on a high note with happy and satisfied hearts of having contributed to a noble cause. The final report from our treasurer showed that $1065 was raised that day!! $1000 is being donated to the Plainville food pantry along with the nonperishables (about $150 in value). $300 was raised in the monthly Vachanamrutha meetings and that will be donated to a senior center. The day was aimed to be a family day with a lot of fun activities for the whole family! Along with that the youth was empowered to do fundraising activities and were aware that their contributions would result in monetary collections which would then be donated to various local causes. Here are few photos from the event:
