What the fuss is all about I’ve been living in Virginia for 35 years. That beats my native New York years by quite a bit and qualifies me as a member of the “New South.” I’ve tried to merge the best of my big city ways with all the essential traditions of southern charm. I’ve been known to slip a ‘y’all’ in a conversation; and I call every one – and thing – ‘Darling.’ I’ve even learned how to cook shrimp and grits with a side of collards, much to the delight of my southern husband John. Loving tradition as I do endears me to the South even more. I’ve learned about so many aspects of Virginian life from savvy southern friends. Years in the garden club helped me fall madly in love with peonies and hydrangea. Entertained at homes of some of the best hosts in town has taught me about hospitality and grace. Dining in this region has made me obsessed with oysters and other gifts of the sea. And most of all, living in an area surrounded by tributaries, rivers, the ocean and the Chesapeake Bay has shown me a lifestyle rich in nature and beauty. Which is why we’re dedicating this issue to all things ‘Southern Charming.’ Couples making the choice to ‘get hitched’ in a setting rich with plantations, farms, wineries, bay and ocean views, and coastlines that stretch to forever, are doing it for a reason. They’re proud of their heritage and all that defines them– with much of it rooted right here. For Blair and Thomas, this wedding was eleven years in the making so it had to leave a lasting impression. The Virginia Zoo provided a sense of elegance, creativity and uniqueness that fit the couples' personalities. The bride wore two dresses for her big day, both designed and handmade by her godmother. Blair and Thomas embraced the wild life theme with live animal ambassadors, silver animal place card holders and zebra print decor and favors. A cocktail hour in the Asia exhibit started the evening; continuing with train rides for guests throughout the zoo; and concluding with a late night food truck of empanada and taco treats. The bride and groom finished off their night of untamed fun by riding off on a (motorized) zebra and lion. 14 SPRING / SUMMER 2017

For these Hampton Roads natives, “Southern Sophistication” was key with The Hermitage Museum providing the perfect backdrop. Personal touches making their day unique included cocktail napkins with fun facts and monogrammed stir sticks; to hand cut cotton used in the floral arrangements. Garden roses, dahlias, eucalyptus, hydrangeas and magnolia leaves enhanced the antique silver centerpieces. The bride’s dress had a sweetheart neckline, rosette sash and multilayers of English silk tulle with her maids wearing a similar silhouette in mauve tones. Guests spent the evening noshing on comfort food including chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits. The father of the bride created the recipes for the bourbon tasting bar and signature drinks. The live band played into the starry night and this happy couple left their amazing event under a shower of bubbles.

A coastal vibe set the scene for Sydney and James’ summer wedding. The couple, who grew up in Virginia Beach, spent summers respectively, on their parents’ boats on the Eastern Shore. They instantly fell in love with the simple, but elegant water scenery, which was accented with coral and white roses, dramatic draping and chandeliers in the tent; and a mix of farm tables with lanterns to lighten the mood. The bride chose a sweetheart neckline gown, while her bridesmaids wore coral in four different styles. Guests enjoyed food stations including freshly shucked Shore oysters; koozies designed by the groom; and music performed by The Deloreans. From cake toppers, to drink stirrers, and wedding signage; there are endless ways to make a wedding unique to you. Don’t think ‘personalized’ just means your name or monogram. Weddings can have a symbol or singular element (think a unique feather or other design) that can be carried throughout your event to make it really yours. Q} What are some themes trending for Bridal Showers and Bachlorette Parties? A} Pineapples are still going strong! It’s a Southern symbol of our region but this trend is all about fun and metallics. Also on the horizon are water, constellation, and mod trends. These themed parties are about spending quality time with family and friends so think brunches and pool parties. Q} Is ‘Less More’– or is ‘More More’ when it comes to decorating for a special event? A} More is More! Here’s a little insider’s tip: you’ll always need a few more decorations than you think. It’s amazing how easily decor can get lost in a space. That said, you don’t have to go crazy! Focus on key areas like the dessert table and drink station, making them extra special and over the top. Your guess will notice! Q} The 2017 Pantone color is “Greenery.” When guiding clients about color combinations, is it best to stick to one or two colors; or embrace a number of tones? A} Color is big! It’s nice to design with a number of tones– it offers brides lots of flexibility when working through what they envision for their wedding. Bold is making a comeback and we love it! We’re seeing variations of poppy hues and deep rich tones for our 2017 events so they’d look great with “Greenery.” Pastels are sticking around in new ways– think dusty blues and shades of mauve and gray to play off the blush trend we’ve loved for so many years. Q} What are some favorite words or phrases brides are choosing for cake toppers, balloons and favors? A} Brides are looking for things with meaning from a favorite book or show. Phrases like, “Better Together” capture the love couples have for each other. Inside jokes between couples; or funny phrases and hashtags capture the uniqueness of a relationship, showcasing both of their personalities.

"At our winery, we can adapt to the tastes of our audience and really explore flavors that offer something new and exciting." If spirits are a part in your signature cocktail and bar set up, include some regional distilleries to support the southern theme. One favorite is Cirrus, a Richmond-based vodka maker that produces an amazingly smooth product that compliments any flavor profile. MA KE I T YO' SE L F An old fashioned mint julep never disappoints. This South Louisiana version offers something for everyone. According to renown chef Sydney Meers of Stove Restaurant, traditionally mint and sugar cubes were put in milk cartons filled with water and frozen. They floated in the Julep bowl to make it icy cold; then slowly melted, giving it an extra sweet flavor: SOUTH LOUISIANA MINT JULEP, SERVES 15 1/2 cup of water 2/3 cup of sugar A fifth of bourbon 120 mint leaves ruffed up Club soda, to taste
1. Boil water and sugar to make simple syrup. (Bring water and sugar to rolling boil, reduce heat to simmer.) 2. Add mint leaves and then let simmer for 30 minutes. Let cool. 3. Next, add the bourbon. Place in freezer over night or until mixture becomes a slush. 4. Crush ice, preferably snow ball ice which most blenders can produce. Fill glass with ice, add one fresh mint leaf, fill glass with mint julep mix.

HEAD TO TOE CARE There’s no doubt that every bridal gown reveals considerable parts of the upper body including décolleté, arms, back and shoulders. I’ve always considered the full body experience of exfoliation and hydration an important part of preparing for the big day. Lauren Padmore, esthetician and massage therapist at Flowering Almond Spa at the Founders Inn weighed in on the importance of a polished body. “With high definition photography, the focus isn’t just on the face but the entire body.
