Katie Dixon & Andew Brownlee DECEMBER 22, 2017 PLEASANT POINT FAMILY FARM ELITE PHOTOGRAPHY

Andrew Brownlee was happy to oblige Katie Dixon’s dream of having a Christmas wedding, which they did at the bride’s parents’ home on Point Pleasant. The groom and his father spent seven months building a 4,800-square foot barn on the Care Charles property. Thousands of lights lit the barn, illuminating a decadent Christmas scene that included a four-tier gingerbread town with a tiny replica of the red barn, the church and the happy couple. The bride wore a third-generation heirloom dress and everyone got in on the ceremony, including the family dog, Sugarbear. The couple had their first dance to a choreographed mash-up of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” 10 FALL/WINTER 2018

Katie Johnson & Thomas Lawler MARCH 17, 2018 THE HISTORIC POST OFFICE AUDREY ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Thomas and Katie Lawler enjoyed a spring wedding at the newly renovated Historic Post Office in Hampton. Though the pair married on St. Patrick’s Day (a nod to the groom’s Irish heritage), the bridesmaids wore dresses with shades of cornflower blue. The venue was chosen not only because of its central locality, but because of its special significance to the bride, whose grandfather began his career as a postman at that very location. The couple drove off into the proverbial sunset together amid a sparkler send-off in a classic 1965 Ford Mustang convertible.

When Sharese Balas and Austin Douglas decided to marry, they wanted the ceremony to be in a place convenient for them and fun for the out-of-town guests. The couple settled on The Woman’s Club of Portsmouth, which offered a beautiful venue for the country chic wedding that featured a classic approach with some homemade touches. Sharese wore a dress by Allure Bridals, featuring a sweetheart neckline and plunging back. The bridesmaids wore blush in various styles to suit each one. And after the “I Dos” the gathering of family and friends had cocktails while they feasted on chicken and barbecue from a food truck.

eddings kick off long before the bride makes her walk down the aisle, and run well past that moment. And let’s face it, having family and friends dedicate that much time to celebrating your good fortune is no small burden. The least you can do is provide a great welcome bag, or if you are feeling particularly gracious, a welcome box or basket. Get this right and you set the tone for the entire wedding. This is especially true if you’re having a destination wedding or hosting a fair number of out-of-towners. Start out by brainstorming your favorite things: bottled water with your own monogram or wedding logo, a beloved local treat or even miniature bottles of bubbly to really get the fun started. Sara Busby, founder of Virginia Beach’s Wanderful Boxes, has made a career out of creating curated gift boxes. She offers several options for weddings, ranging from grandiose spa boxes to creative cocktail gifts.

VOWBRIDE.COM 23

“Once you’ve selected a theme, presentation and creativity is key,” Busby says. “The whole idea behind the welcome gift is to make your guests’ stay easy and comfortable, so keep them from raiding the minibar.” Fill their bags with sweet and savory snacks that will tide them over if they arrive after dinner, or if they have a late-night craving after the wedding. Wanderful Boxes’ popular Road Trip 2.0 can include a Cocktail Kit To-Go, a local travel guide and a personalized map with all of your must-hit spots clearly marked. “Give out-of-towners a taste of local flavor with snacks that are representative of the setting,” Busby says. For example, Forbes Salt Water Taffy, samples from Virginia Beach-based distillery Tarnished Truth and locally sourced peanuts provide nice finishing touches. Wanderful Boxes also offers the Nirvana box, which includes ethically sourced, handmade teas, sleep masks, travel candles and locally handmade mugs from Jars of Dust. “Adding a personal touch, like including a personalized canvas tote, is perfect for a wedding where guests will be sightseeing,” Busby says. Guests can then use the bag to tote groceries or gym essentials. Busby suggests that you design something subtle that your guests will use after the wedding, while remembering the amazing time they had with you. 24 FALL/WINTER 2018

irst comes the dress, then comes the decision: veil or no veil. Like so many aspects of the bridal ensemble, the veil has been through numerous changes in style and popularity. From Cloche and Birdcage veils to Mantilla and Cathedral, this symbolic effect is one of the oldest elements of a bride’s look. “There is something about that mo-

ment when you put on the veil that transforms you into a true bride,” says Julia Hetzel, who was married last December in Virginia Beach. “It’s just that feeling along with everyone’s reaction to you once it’s on.” And while it fell out of favor for a while, the veil is making a strong comeback these days, with designers relying on beautifully embellished and bespoke

touches to make their work stand out. Designer Hermione de Paula, for example, offers unparalleled handcraft techniques of exquisite embroidery to create lasting poems, love letters, dance lyrics and elaborate monograms. These personalized moments are embedded in the veil, creating a keepsake that can be handed down. Alexandra Grecco created a line of veils to compliment her gown collection. She says a veil pinned to a floral crown, headpiece or comb can make a stunning statement and add drama to the ceremony. “Veils are definitely more of a traditional look, so I wanted to create designs that had our signature embroidery details on them to give an unexpected modern twist.” Make sure you wait until you’ve committed to a hairstyle before choosing a veil length and style. Short hair can handle anything from a Birdcage to a full-length veil. Mantillas work best when hair is worn down with curls or a low chignon. Half-up styles and up-dos require veils with combs solidly pinned into the hair. Once the ceremony is over and the photos are taken, lose the veil and let the party begin. Alexandra says brides should feel free to replace their veils with headpieces or jeweled combs. Fresh orchids or roses pinned in also work as a lovely accent.

rides this year are showing their love of the English garden – signaling boldness and vibrancy – as peonies, dahlias and English roses make a strong return to wedding decor. Glenda Fowler of Lasting Impressions Florist says there is a strong demand this year for higher-end blooms. “Roses, carnations and chrysanthemums are being replaced with more expensive flowers like peonies, dahlias, gerberas and garden roses. Naturally hydrangea, with all its many color options, will never go away as a proverbial favorite.” Watch for a surge of yellow and orange flowers in arrangements and whimsical bouquets. Fowler added that today’s bouquets are hand-tied, loose and airy, as if freshly gathered from the garden. As the cooler months unfold, she predicts that moody hues will dip into deep tones, including rust and dark burgundy. With color backdrops of bridesmaid gowns moving from dusty rose to navy, blooms have an opportunity to make a strong statement. “Ribbon accents will reflect this and include wrapped bouquets; but streamer ribbons that are soft and romantic are a pretty updated accent,” she says. Bringing the outdoors in, she recently created a garden trellis on the entire back tent wall that became the backdrop for photos and selfie moments throughout the evening. Allow your floral designer to be the storyteller of your day by using blooms in compositions that inspire even invitation designers, cake bakers and lighting companies to set the mood. Combined, it all becomes a beautiful statement about your wedding event.

In a world of apps, blogs, tweets and texts, some traditions are bound to seem quaint – and ultimately, expendable. The internet has created a world in which convenience is king. Couples are even launching websites that help guests with everything from searching registries to finding hotels and restaurants near the wedding venue. So it’s interesting that even in this fast-paced, disposable, modern world that something like old-fashioned invitations remain popular. Websites such as Zazzle or Paperless Post allow cost-conscious couples to design and buy paper invitations. And increasingly, couples are using laser printing and digital enhancements to achieve looks that used to be reserved for handcrafted cards. Still, according to Melissa Lange, president and manager of Jacobson Fine Papers & Gifts in Virginia Beach, many couples prefer to let their fingers and eyeballs make selections in person. And Shawn Rabideau, a wedding PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON MOFFIT

planner for almost two decades and a bridal consultant for numerous publications and national television programs, including “Good Morning America,” says the thing that has changed most is a broader selection of paper, colors, graphics and fonts. With that in mind, here are some of the hot trends for 2018:

Tables of Inspiration

The way you set your tables often sets the tone for the wedding. Don’t take it lightly. STORY BY NICOLE ALVARADO

The generation of tumultuous upheaval and eclipsing technological advancements is reaching marrying age, and it shows. “Alternative” themes have become commonplace, with dark and brooding palettes, in-your-face minimalism or retro-meetsmod – everyone striving to make this time-honored tradition belong to them in their own way. While table settings are just one aspect of the massive wedding industry, it is an important corner of the market. The table-setting arena is more cutthroat than you might think, with competitive events promising cash prizes and increased renown within the community to the victors. Well-organized, fluid and creative table placement and presentation can dictate the pace and mood of the evening. Do you want guests to sit down and chat or get up and mingle? Do you want the reception to be focused around a meal? Will that meal be catered to the table or served buffet-style? These questions, and more, are why a somewhat-innocuous 38 FALL/WINTER 2018

piece of everyday furniture can cause headaches, nightmares and general distress during the planning process. Taking cues from the traditional fashion runway at this year’s spring shows, expect lots of mixed textures at weddings throughout the year. Brides.com says the decor trend of the year is acrylic, which can be used in fun and innovative ways such as for the menus atop the tables. You can’t go wrong invoking the Pantone Color of the Year. This year’s winner, Ultra Violet, lends itself well as a statementmaking backdrop. Go bold and all out, or use it to accent details. As always, if you’re unsure and opting for classic, you can go for the reliable, mod black-and-white approach and sprinkle color throughout as a way to punch up the basics. A little Ultra Violet lining the hem of a table runner or the rim of a china cup can go a long way. Here are some local businesses changing the tablescape.

WATERFORD EVENT RENTALS When it comes to the specialization of tabletop design, you don’t get much more niche than Waterford. Established in 2010, Waterford has quickly become an industry frontrunner. Owner Alyse Conyers, a business management major from Old Dominion University, discovered the impact something as subtle as chair covers could have on an entire event. “It’s amazing how something so simple could make such a difference,” she says. Waterford’s look can be described as classically tailored. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAITLIN GERRES

There are some common themes and elements, favoring light colors such as cream, coral and pastel turquoise. Even the classic black-and-white settings can be seen with stripes of color in details like the silken fabric chair-ties or a lone, dark napkin ring floating atop a sea of white china. As comfortable with designing settings in a ballroom as it is on the beach, Waterford doesn’t shy from mixing textures and using asymmetry to draw the eye. For Antonia “Missy” Christianson, the details are where she thrives. “My style is luxurious, detail-driven, and I try to stay ahead of the trend,” Christianson says. Christianson tries to dig into the psychology behind her client’s choices and give them things they didn’t even know they wanted. “Really coming up with these unique details inspires me, and pushes me to think outside the box,” she says. Finding inspiration in her clients and the world around her, Christianson tablescapes are anything but boring. While there are obviously classic elements at play, what stands out is the way Christianson can take a challenging theme and turn it into an unforgettable affair. It’s easy to imagine something like a Katy Perry-inspired wedding quickly feeling dated. Yet Christianson pulled it off, incorporating the playful color elements of Perry’s work with a familial feel that will look good in pictures over a mantelpiece for decades to come. “No matter what type of event I’m planning, or what the challenge is, I always do have one end goal in mind, aesthetically speaking, and that is to create something new and fresh, while still creating a timeless look. CHESAPEAKE BAY CATERING

This company pulls double duty, providing the food (it’s an authority on kosher meals) to go with its tabletop design and arrangement. “Our style is more clean and modern,” says catering director Joan Bertucci.“We don’t believe you need a lot, just a combination of the right pieces to make a big impact.” Bertucci has been in the hospitality business since high school, growing her connections and network until she was brought on board at Chesapeake Bay Catering by a colleague almost 10 years ago. A decade later, she is still searching for innovative ways to combine modern with classic and cater to the individual needs of every client. CBC’s seasonal style is on point with the mixture of furniture and textiles. Bertucci aims to keep the bottom line budget-friendly by maximizing the design you get with quality products. “My signature is mixing metals and material,” she said. “I’ve always loved silver and gold together. Or crystal and wood. Metal pipes and live edge trees. Concrete and velvet. “One of our old bartenders likes to say we do sexy events. I like that saying.” ChesapeakeBayCatering.com| 757-213-5021 Facebook, Instagram – @ChesapeakeBayCateringVA

Built in 1914 (and revamped for public use in 2016), it’s hard to beat the iconic Beaux-Arts architecture of what used to be the largest post office in the area. Its classic approach fits the setting, though stylists are happy to work with the client to find a solution that works across the board. “I think I find the most inspiration from architecture,” manager Kelsey Leeper says . “My favorite parts of the building are the whitewashed brick and the black wrought-iron works.” A self-described “sucker for stripes feminine curves, dark accents and farmhouse-style pieces,” Leeper describes her signature as “French Country chic.”

THE HISTORIC POST OFFICE

“My color palette consists of lots of white variants, black, French blue and grey,” she said. When you book the space, you also get an assortment of tables of all shapes and sizes. Rich, mahogany resin chiavari chairs and a spread of ivory linens are available, but the design itself is more on the customer. As it is, you get a tailor-made experience that fulfills your needs in a historic venue that doesn’t need much pomp and frill to emphasize the weight of its significance. kleeper@thehistoricpostoffice.com | 757-848-3885 TheHistoricPostOffice.com

hen getting ready for the big day, brides want to look their best. Photos, after all, last forever on walls, photo albums and of course, social media. Your appearance is one of the things that guests may remember most about the event, so we’ve rounded up some ideas for ways to get in shape (or at least have the right mindset) when it comes time to walk down the aisle.

JIM WHITE FITNESS AND NUTRITION STUDIOS

MARCUS HOLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

The fitness studio with locations in Norfolk and Virginia Beach focuses on personal training and nutritional counseling. It even accepts insurance. Amani Holloman, a nutrition assistant there, says they’ve seen brides come in as often as two or three times each week before their wedding. The studio offers a few options for personal training based on the bride’s goals. There are 30- and 50-minute sessions, depending on how often they want to go. The company offers a 10 percent discount to brides on any package for their first month. The high-intensity express, for example, is three times each week for 30 minutes each. It’s more focused and intense than a 50-minute session, which includes warm-up and cool down, Holloman says. A bride can do it by herself or in a group of up to four. “Our training is 100 percent trained toward what the member is looking for,” Holloman says. “It depends where they’re at beforehand and where they’re trying to get.” Nutrition plans are catered as well. There’s no set timeline, but most brides start their plans six months to a year before the wedding, she says.

JOCELYN SIDWELL PERSONAL TRAINER AND NUTRITION COUNSELING

“Fitness and nutrition should be a lifestyle, but when it comes to something like getting married, the average person does wait until the last minute,” Sidwell says. But there’s no reason to panic if you’re that bride. “A lot of times, that tends to push people harder toward their goal,” she says. A six-to-eight week plan before the wedding is plenty of time to reach most goals. And forget detox or crash diets; they’ll put too much stress on the body. Sidwell suggests that brides (and everyone really) use tracking apps to monitor eating. Most people don’t realize how much of a difference it can make. Snacks add up. Meal planning is important. The perfect go-to meal in the last few weeks is something like a smoothie, filled more with veggies and less with fruits. They don’t take long and have plenty of benefits, she says. Another easy fix: swap out carbs, especially when getting closer to the day. Instead of spaghetti, try zucchini pasta; instead of toast, try sweet-potato rounds

or sliced apples and instead of tortillas, try lettuce wraps. Don’t forget to drink lots of water. If exercising isn’t your strong suit, do what you can to get quality movement every single day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes at home. The endorphins released can help combat the stress of the wedding. And don’t be afraid to pull your soonto-be hubby or wife into the routine with you. “Anything you can do to build a healthier lifestyle together before the marriage is going to make a lasting result,” she says.

CYCLEBAR

Looking for an activity to get you moving besides hopping on the treadmill? Cyclebar, an indoor-cycling franchise in Virginia Beach, provides a high-intensity, low-impact option. It’s best done in a group – such as your bridesmaids or best girlfriends – in those months leading up to the big day, says owner Chris Bushey. Bushey suggests starting three or six months before walking down the aisle and coming in two or three times each week. Depending on your goals, that could increase to four or five times each week. Personal trainIt’s best done in a ers on staff can group – such as your help with working bridesmaids or best on specific goals. girlfriends – in those Bushey calls months leading up it “a party on a to the big day, says bike” because the owner Chris Bushey. room is set up like an amphitheater, with loud music and large video screens at the front of the room. Most classes last about 45 minutes. There’s also a power-hour option (60 minutes) or endurance class (75 minutes). It’s more fun with a bigger group, so brides can go on their own and join in a class of about 45 people, or drag their whole bridal party in on the fun. “The energy level is pretty phenomenal,” Bushey says. 2217 Upton Drive Unit 810 Virginia Beach 757-689-0942 RedMill.CycleBar.com

PURE BARRE

WHAT IS PURE BARRE?

A workout based on movements around a ballet barre. The small, isometric movements burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques.

50-MINUTE CLASSIC CLASS | Combines

small-controlled movements with stretching to deliver toning results to areas that are specifically troublesome to women.

45-MINUTE CARDIO CLASS | Offers high intensity but low impact movements for an additional challenge.

Who says you have to exhaust yourself on the Elliptical machine to get in a good workout? Pure Barre is based on movements around a ballet barre. The company’s website says the workout is meant to perform small, isometric movements, which burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques. There are two types of classes. One is a 50-minute classic class that combines small, controlled movements with stretching “to deliver toning results to areas that are specifically troublesome to women” says Courtney Pennell, the operations manager for the Norfolk and Virginia Beach studios. The other is a 45-minute cardio class that offers high-intensity but low-impact movements for an additional challenge. You don’t need a leotard to participate, either. Leggings or capris are fine, but leave the shorts at home. Be sure to pick a top that will cover your midriff. Shoes are left behind, too. Special packages are available for bridesto-be: Three months for $350 gives you unlimited classes – up to two per day. “The few months before your wedding, you really want to tone up, not necessarily lose weight,” says Kelley Everhart, a lead teacher with the company. She suggests coming at least three times a week to get the best bang for your buck. “We really try to tone the muscle, stretch it out,” she said. It’s a full-body workout. An introductory offer of $49 for two weeks is also available. Pennell says each studio offers 30 classes each week. Various locations in Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach PureBarre.com

A return to wedding elegance. STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH

Gathering the industry’s greatest wedding gurus is no easy feat. Leave it to Holy City to offer a large selection of signature presentations by the maestros and mistresses of the bridal world at the 2018 Charleston Wedding Week gathering in January. A wide range of the industry’s most notable figures – from Colin Cowie and Marcy Blum to Tara Guerard and David Beahm – weighed in on the future of weddings, including a return to elegance influenced by visual home and hotel decor, bridal fashion and the arts. While wedding experts were quick to reference trends as an important part of connecting with brides, they urged vendors to expand on everything from metallic moments and Pantoneinspired colors to textural elements and defining eras. For the first time, there is a discernible return to luxe and a more formal approach to weddings. Notable is the rise in later marriages, resulting in a more sophisticated approach to design by nearly-weds. With that comes the challenge of showing them something new that goes beyond the barns, beaches and vineyards they’ve already experienced through their friends’ nuptials. BE A PART OF THE STORY | According to guest celebrity planner and presenter Marcy Blum of Marcy Blum Associates in New York, everything in weddings is about experiences. “The new definition means brides want the ‘Wow’ without anyone knowing what they spent.” Making it posh and polished means

understanding what resonates with a couple and what they can afford. Personalization is a big trend and it goes beyond the monogram. Guiding a couple to discover their taste in decor and style for their event; and helping them find uniqueness in the ambient details, is key to creating that story. DEFINING THE VIBE | Luxury-event planner Colin Cowie of New York and Los Angeles believes couples are far smarter and savvier today. “Luxury is how you make them feel and it should come in doses. Elegance elevates the level of the experience.” Wedding themes often embrace oxymoronic statements, such as “rustic romantic” or “retro metallic,” as couples try to communicate their vision. “Brides are taking the time to really think about what matters most to them on their big day so paying attention ensures that nothing gets lost in translation,” says Tara Guérard of Tara Guérard Soirée in Charleston, South Carolina. ROMANCING THE GOWN | Some of the best looks in bridal couture get their inspiration from blooms. Designers are also taking a cue from creating hand-painted silk confections; rich, embroidered details; three-dimensional flower appliqués and lace designs for jaw-dropping beauty down the aisle, which are on display at the fashion presentation of one of Charleston’s most popular bridal salons, Southern Protocol Bridal. TEXTURAL MASHUPS | Part of the luxe trend is mixing PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARNI ROTHSCHILD PICTURES

textures. Brides have a crush on velvet in rich jeweled tones as well as marbleized linens with veins of silver or gold, according to Heather Hanson of La Tavola Linen in Napa, California. With large farm tables still strong, everything from oversized runners to full-size overlays continue to be part of tablescape décor. LIFE OF THE PARTY | For couples feeling fancy and seeking unique ambiance for their wedding, Darcy Miller, founding editor of the Martha Stewart Weddings magazine, offered chic and fun ideas based on her new book, “Celebrate Everything.” With creative mantras that include, “Exciting is better than expensive,” “Think outside the vase” and “I Do Details,” this expert reminds us that romantic touches always tell the story. COLOR CODE | Pastel colors in soft lavender may eventually

take over the powdery pink that millennials coveted through the spring and summer. The moody hue of Pantone’s Ultra Violet will set deep tones of burgundy and plum in motion as fall and winter weddings explore creative design options in everything from bridesmaid gowns to tablecloths. CELEBRATE EVERYTHING CREATIVE | “When you collaborate, the magic happens,” says branding expert Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York. “Ideas blossom and together innovation and a creative visual connection occur that you can never achieve on your own. Let each respective talent do what they do best and suddenly, the creative possibilities take the event to a whole new level.”
