President and CEO Greetings: It is with great joy and immense pride that I welcome you to the 21st Annual Alumni Hall of Fame Gala, a cherished tradition at Voorhees University. This evening is an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the remarkable journeys of our esteemed alumni and a devoted supporter, who, both in life and in memory, have played a pivotal role in our institution’s history. Our distinguished honorees have demonstrated exceptional dedication, innovation, and passion for their respective fields and for the University. They have not only achieved personal success but have also inspired others to reach greater heights. They have transformed their dreams into reality, and in doing so, they have become inspirations for our students, showing them that with hard work, determination, and a strong foundation like Voorhees, they too can reach the pinnacle of their aspirations. Tonight, we are honored to recognize five outstanding Voorhees alumni who have excelled in their careers, made significant contributions to their communities, and consistently demonstrated the Voorhees spirit of resilience, empathy, and leadership. These individuals are emblematic of the strength and promise that Voorhees instills in its students. We are also deeply moved to pay tribute to a posthumous honoree, a former member of our Board of Trustees, who was a steadfast advocate for our beloved institution. Their unwavering commitment to Voorhees University continues to inspire us, and we are proud to commemorate their legacy tonight. This evening is a reminder of the transformative power of education and the lasting impact that Voorhees University has had on the lives of its graduates and supporters. As we celebrate our honorees, we are also celebrating the ideals and values that define our institution - the pursuit of knowledge, the embrace of diversity, and the call to serve our communities. This celebration marks some of the outstanding accomplishments these individuals have made in our community, state, and world. They have all left an indelible mark and set the bar for others to follow. They should feel a sense of pride and honor as they are a beacon of light for future generations. As Voorhees University celebrates these seven inductees, it is imperative we continue to strive for excellence as they have. Their lives demonstrate a strong fortitude for commitment, perseverance, and dedication and are examples to the key to life and success. Sierra Artemus Mistress of Ceremony

Sierra Artemus, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, graduated from Richland Northeast High School in 2010. During her time there, she completed the Cosmetology program and obtained her license from the South Carolina Board of Cosmetology. Eager to enhance her storytelling skills, Sierra pursued an associate degree at Midlands Technical College, where she took various writing courses, including creative writing. Continuing her education, Sierra earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She also minored in business and marketing. Currently, Sierra works at WIS News 10, where she played a vital role in pioneering and developing the lifestyle show, “Soda City Live.” Additionally, Sierra serves as the executive producer and host of the show, which showcases the best aspects of the Midlands, including local businesses, organizations, and community events surrounding the area. Sierra’s passion for community extends beyond her professional endeavors. She is a strong advocate for youth, striving to bring about change and create opportunities for underserved communities. Furthermore, she actively raises awareness for causes such as mental health, black maternal health, and domestic violence. Sierra firmly believes in using her platform and journalistic skills to uplift those around her, as she genuinely cares about people.


2023 Hall of Fame Honoree Allen Anderson

Allen Anderson was born and raised on a farm in the rural expanses of Georgetown County, South Carolina. Early in life, Allen recognized that there was a world beyond farming and tending to tobacco fields. Consequently, upon his graduation from Choppee High School in 1967, he embarked on an educational journey at Voorhees College in Denmark, SC, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Post his graduation from Voorhees College in 1971, Allen made his way to Washington, DC, where he pursued further studies at esteemed institutions including the University of the District of Columbia, NIH Graduate School, USDA Graduate School, and the University of Maryland. His professional journey led him to the Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, Maryland, where he served as a chemist. After a dedicated 32-year tenure, he retired. Presently, Allen resides in Nesmith, SC, alongside his wife, Minnie Cooper Anderson. Their family is blessed with five children, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. An active member of Greater MT. Ararat AME Church under the guidance of Rev. Peggy J. Pope, he plays multiple pivotal roles within the church, currently serving as the steward Pro-Tem, Church Treasurer, and President of the Lay Organization. Allen holds the esteemed title of a 32nd degree Master Mason with Ionic Lodge #17, and he’s also a member of the Markwell Chapter, Holy Royal Arch Mason, Jonathan Davis Consistory, and a Shriner in chapter Mecca #10. Further, he is associated with Cherokee/Progressive Chapter #300, where he takes on the role of Worthy Patron. Allen is a dedicated member of Georgetown County Voorhees University Alumni Association, fulfilling the duties of Treasurer. Despite a busy work schedule, he finds time to work part-time for the Georgetown County School District as a bus driver. His commitment and rapport with athletic coaches make him a favored choice for field trips, his way of giving back to the community. Whenever his demanding schedule permits, he indulges in hobbies such as fishing, hunting, and travel.


2023 Hall of Fame Honoree Julia Byrd-Barr

Julia Byrd-Barr, a native of Clinton, South Carolina, brings a wealth of experience as a retired educator from the McDuffie Board of Education. Julia’s educational journey began with her diploma from Clinton High School in her hometown. She went on to earn her associate degree in liberal arts from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and subsequently obtained her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Voorhees University in the class of 1975. Eager to expand her expertise, she pursued further studies at Clemson University and Augusta University to attain certification in Special Education. Upon her graduation from Voorhees University, Julia embarked on her teaching career, starting at the Hallett School on the Whitten Center for Children with Special Needs campus in Clinton, South Carolina. In 1979-80, she relocated to Thomson, Georgia, securing a teaching position, where she has made her home ever since. She dedicated thirty-three years of her professional life to Thomson Middle School, formerly R. L. Norris Middle School, where she made a significant impact on students’ lives. Her contributions were recognized with awards such as Teacher of the Year and various other accolades for her outstanding work with students. In 2010, she retired from Thomson Middle School, but her commitment to the students of McDuffie County persists as a Title-One tutor educator at Thomson Elementary School. Beyond her educational career, Julia is an active member of the Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in Thomson, Georgia. She serves on various committees, including the Trustee Board, the Finance Committee, and as the assistant superintendent of the Church School. Her involvement extends to participation in the Sanctuary and Gospel Choirs. She collaborates closely with Georgia’s Sixth District Christian Education Department and lends her voice to the mass choir for the Sixth District Annual Conferences. Her guiding life philosophy is simple yet powerful: to serve with excellence whenever called upon. Julia’s dedication extends to her alma mater, as she is a lifetime member of the Voorhees University National Alumni Association and an active member of the Voorhees University Central Savannah Region Area Alumni Chapter. She is also a member of the Tri-County Retired Educators Association and holds a life membership in the Georgia Retired Educators Association. She is recognized as a Silver Life Member of the N.A.A.C.P. and actively serves as the membership chairperson for the McDuffie N.A.A.C.P. Adding to her list of responsibilities, Julia serves as the First Chair of the McDuffie County Board of Elections. She finds joy in her marriage to her first love, Marcelles Barr Jr., and the two reside happily in Thomson, Georgia. Her life is characterized by a steadfast commitment to education, community service, and personal excellence.


2023 Hall of Fame Honoree Tiffany Gary

Tiffany Gary, a graduate of the Class of 2004, has embarked on a journey marked by excellence, dedication, and a profound commitment to both her career and community. With a steadfast passion for healthcare, Tiffany’s accomplishments have continued to shine since she earned her Masters in Healthcare Administration in 2011. Currently residing in the vibrant city of Greenville, South Carolina, Tiffany shares her life with her beloved son, Alex. Together, they have become an integral part of the community, where Tiffany’s contributions have left an indelible mark. In recognition of her remarkable achievements, Tiffany was honored as a 2020 Voorhees University 10 Under 40 recipient. Her outstanding commitment to her alma mater and her broader community led to her induction into the UNCF Alumni Hall of Fame in 2023. Professionally, Tiffany serves as an Epic Applications Team Lead at one of the leading healthcare centers in the Upstate. Her expertise extends beyond borders, as she has provided consultative work for some of the most renowned healthcare systems nationally and internationally. Her dedication to improving healthcare is unwavering. Tiffany’s bond with Voorhees University remains strong, as she actively takes on roles as the financial secretary, 10 Under 40 Chairperson, and Social Media Manager for the Voorhees University National Alumni Association. Her efforts have united alumni and strengthened their connection to the university. Community service is at the heart of Tiffany’s values. As an active member of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Greenville Section, she serves as Co-Chair for the STEAM committee, championing education and empowerment in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Tiffany’s impact extends to students at Voorhees University, where she coordinated a formal dress drive and facilitated an alumni welcome back drive, providing essential toiletries to students. Her commitment to uplifting others is a testament to her dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of those she serves. Tiffany Gary’s journey from a Class of 2004 graduate to a healthcare leader, community advocate, and philanthropist is a source of inspiration. Her unwavering commitment to excellence and service continues to transform lives, leaving a legacy of compassion and achievement.


2023 Hall of Fame Honoree Dr. LaTonya Gillespie-Johnson

Dr. LaTonya Gillespie-Johnson hails from College Park, Georgia, and has been a devoted fan of Atlanta sports teams throughout her life. Her academic journey commenced at Voorhees College, now known as Voorhees University, where she pursued a major in biology. Following her undergraduate studies, she ventured to the Midwest for dental school, enrolling at Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, she returned to her hometown, where she fulfilled her childhood dream of establishing her dental practice, Southern Pearl Dentistry, in 2019. Now a wife, mother, and business owner, she brings her unwavering passion for oral healthcare back to her community. With a career spanning since 2009, Dr. Gillespie-Johnson has consistently advocated for oral health awareness, both locally and internationally. Her advocacy encompasses the promotion of oral health care, fostering healthy oral hygiene practices, and advocating for oral cancer prevention. She maintains active membership in various dental associations, including the American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and National Dental Association. In her commitment to championing her Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Dr. Gillespie-Johnson ardently supports collegiate studies. During her tenure as a student, she excelled as a Presidential Scholar, a student athlete participating in basketball and cross country, and even served as Miss Voorhees College. Currently, she serves on the Board of Trustees for Voorhees University, acts as the HBCU Liaison for the National Alumni Council (NAC) for the Voorhees University National Alumni Association (VUNAA), and holds the position of President for the Metro Atlanta Alumni Chapter. As a dedicated philanthropist, Dr. Gillespie-Johnson is a vocal advocate for spreading awareness of oral health to underserved communities, both domestically and abroad. She actively participates in missionary work, traveling to the Dominican Republic twice a year with a team of clinicians to provide free dental care, medical examinations, eye examinations, and nutritional guidance. Closer to home in Georgia, she and her team play a crucial role in the annual Mission of Mercy event sponsored by the American Dental Association, offering dental care to those who lack access to it. Dr. Gillespie-Johnson finds immense gratification in her work, stating, “The best part of my job is that I am fortunate enough to be the reason someone smiles, as my goal is to change one smile at a time.” Beyond her dental profession and family commitments, she dedicates her spare time to fitness, sports, tennis, travel, painting, photography, and quality moments with her husband, Murvin Johnson, and their daughters, Skylar and Riley.


2023 Hall of Fame Honoree Senator John Lee Scott, Jr.

Senator John Lee Scott, Jr., a pillar of the South Carolina community, dedicated his life to public service and community leadership until his passing in August 2023. Born on October 21, 1953, in Richland County, John was the son of John L. Scott, Sr., and Gracie W. Scott. His journey of service began at South Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1975, shaping his path toward a lifetime of remarkable contributions. An unwavering advocate for his community, John wore many hats throughout his life. He was the proud owner and Broker-in-Charge of J. L. Scott Realty Company, Inc., a testament to his commitment to the real estate industry. Additionally, he served as the President of C & S Consulting Group, illustrating his prowess in the consulting field. John was not just a citizen of South Carolina; he was an essential part of its fabric. He was married to Joan Crouch and was the proud father of one child, John L. III, passing down the values of service and commitment to the next generation. His spiritual dedication was evident in his involvement with the New Ebenezer Baptist Church. He served as the Church Clerk from 1980 to 1995, a Trustee Board member from 1980 to 2005, and a Deacon since 2005, embodying his profound faith and devotion to his community. John’s political career was marked by his unwavering commitment to making a difference. He was a member of the South Carolina State Senate, representing District 19, and began his service in this esteemed role in 2008. John was re-elected to the South Carolina State Senate in 2020, attesting to the trust and confidence his constituents had in his leadership. Before his tenure in the State Senate, John served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1990 to 2008, further solidifying his reputation as a dedicated public servant. Throughout his political career, John played an active role in several Senate committees, such as the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate Medical Affairs Committee, and Senate Corrections and Penology Committee. These roles were a testament to his commitment to addressing issues of paramount importance, from legal matters to healthcare and corrections. His dedication to these committees and the issues they addressed underscored his passion for making South Carolina a better place for all its residents. John’s legacy is a testament to a life well lived-in service to his community and the state of South Carolina. He will be remembered as a committed leader, an advocate for progress, and a devoted family man who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those he served. His contributions to his community and his unwavering dedication to his principles have left an indelible mark on South Carolina.


2023 Hall of Fame Honoree Douglas Stokes

Douglas Stokes dedicated 33 years of his life to law enforcement, serving in Bamberg and Orangeburg Counties, and retired after this long and commendable career. In addition to his law enforcement service, he also retired from the South Carolina Army National Guard, concluding 24 years of dedicated service in 2007. Professionally, Douglas had a successful career as an investigator for the Campus Police Department at Denmark Technical College. He later advanced to the position of Chief of Campus Police and Campus Safety at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, where he continued his outstanding service until his retirement in 2019. His exceptional contributions were recognized in 2010 when he was chosen as the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Administrator of the Year. Douglas is a proud alumnus of Voorhees College, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and an associate degree. During his time at Voorhees, he pledged Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Originally hailing from Denmark, South Carolina, he attended the local public schools and graduated from Denmark-Olar High School in 1981. He showcased his athletic talent in high school, particularly excelling in football and basketball. While he briefly played basketball at Voorhees College, he eventually chose to concentrate on his education, prioritizing his academic pursuits. Beyond his professional and educational endeavors, Douglas is deeply engaged in community service. He finds fulfillment in assisting families in need during the holidays through special projects and in building wheelchair ramps for indigent families when resources are available. He is an active advocate for veterans, co-chairing the Bamberg Veterans Day Program alongside his wife. His military career was marked by numerous accolades, awards, and honors at various levels within the company, battalion, and brigade. Douglas is also a life member of the Disabled Veterans Association. His contributions have not gone unnoticed, as he was named the “Distinguished Citizen of the Year” in March 2017 by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Tau Omega Chapter, in recognition of his “dedicated leadership.” In December 2019, both the Voorhees College Denmark Alumni Chapter and the Voorhees College and High School Chapter presented Douglas with the Distinguished Service Award of Appreciation, honoring his tireless service that consistently went above and beyond. Notably, in December 1999, Douglas made history by becoming the first African American to serve as a commissioner on the Bamberg Board of Public Works, appointed by Bamberg City Council to fill the unexpired term of Mr. John “Candy” Bunch after his passing. Additionally, he chairs the Bamberg County Planning Commission and actively participates in the Voorhees College Alumni Association and the Bamberg County Health Coalition. His dedication to these causes earned him the Distinguished Service Award of Appreciation from Voorhees College and the distinction of being named the Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year. In retirement, Douglas and his wife cherish the time they spend with their three granddaughters, and they are the proud parents of three adult children: the late Shannon Stokes, Dr. Kimberly Wolfe, and Kyle Stokes. Douglas Stokes’ contributions to his community and country stand as a testament to his unwavering dedication and leadership.

GEAR UP Purpose… Voorhees University’s GEAR UP program prepares students to be academically, socially, and financially prepared to enter careers or colleges of their choice. Voorhees University GEAR UP is FREE for students thanks to the funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The program supports eighth and ninth grade students and their families. It is designed to help students prepare for brighter futures with successful careers.

GEAR UP Goals… Ø Ø Ø

Increase the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education of participating students. Increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education of participating students. Increase educational expectations for participating students and increase student and family knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation, and financing.

Who GEAR UP Serves… The program is currently serving 8th & 9th grade students at 43 schools in our 10 school districts: Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Chester, Colleton, Edgefield, Hampton, Orangeburg and Williamsburg Counties.

Student Services… Educational Field Trips, College Visits, Exciting Summer Academies, Dual Enrollment, Career Exploration Activities, Financial Aid Advising, Academic Support, Career Counseling, Mentoring, SAT/ACT Test Prep and Tutoring/Homework. Assistance
