here’s no shortage of big names around the city centre, including The White Company, Joules, Seasalt, Jack Wills, Waterstones, L’Occitane, Lush, Lakeland, Pandora, JoJo Maman Bebe, Debenhams and M&S. But some of the best shopping to be had is in Truro’s independent outlets, selling homewares, fashion, gifts and jewellery, antiques and vintage clothing.

The Vor Store on Cathedral Lane’s quaint shopping parade offers on-trend staples from brands including French Connection and Great Plains, while The Little Boutique on historic Walsingham Place and Stolen From Susie on Boscawen Street stock easyto-wear women’s clothes and accessories at affordable prices. Tootsie and Tiger, brimming with handpicked vintage clothing and accessories, is tucked away in Tinners Court, adjacent to Truro’s Pannier Market, which houses an eclectic mix of traders. Another Truro fashion favourite and a good place to pick up a bargain is the Preloved Boutique on Pydar Street, specialising in unworn or like-new women’s clothes. For cool British design, head to The Clementine on St Mary’s Street offering homewares, gifts and jewellery, and Inhabit in

hot dogs and craft beers in a 19th century Wesleyan chapel, and Mustard & Rye, a bar and grill on Calenick Street, with ribs, steaks and pulled pork. Gastropub The Thomas Daniell on Infirmary Hill at the top end of Lemon Street, is a popular place for hearty food and roast lunch every Sunday. If you can squeeze a cream tea into your afternoon, pop into the Truro Arts Cafe on River Street. Expect toasted tea cakes, scones, flapjacks, and the local favourite, carrot cake. The Alverton, a stylish Grade IIlisted hotel on Tregolls Road, just a five-minute walk from the cathedral, is also well known for its afternoon teas, with delicate finger sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and scrumptious cakes, served on its sunny private terrace when weather permits!

Don’t miss the Cornish Food Box Company at The Stores on Walsingham Place for some artisan Cornish treats to take home. The business started delivering weekly food boxes in 2010 and now has a shop, distribution centre and new cafe in one of Truro’s most historic buildings – built in the 1800s as a maltings. Working with more than 100 local producers and farmers, they only sell Cornish food and drink, and the stock ranges from vegetables, meat and fish to sparkling wines, curry sauces and breakfast cereals. 7

two shots, please! COFFEE HANGOUTS

With great coffee and lush cakes, Truro’s spoilt for choice when it comes to cool, independent cafes. Amanda Williams, the Secret Truro blogger, chooses her six favourite coffee hangouts. 10

MIDTOWN

BLEND 71

The Cool One

The Creative One

The Compact One

GROUNDED

FIG CAFE

UNEEKA

The Foodie One

The Social One

The Quirky One

The daddy of the independents on Kenwyn Street is the all-round cool place to hang out. Great for grabbing a flat white while you write creative content on your MacBook. 108 also boasts Truro’s very own coffee fairies: they deliver hot drinks all over the city.

Using locally roasted beans from Olfactory Coffee Roasters, great coffee here is a given. But what’s really setting Grounded on New Bridge Street apart is its delicious food. It might be the hearty soups or Da Bara’s popular pastries, including an exclusive to Grounded: cinnamon raisin and walnut loaf. Mmmm, delicious!

Want great coffee? No problem. Want to buy a cactus? No problem. Midtown on King Street understands that creativity is as important to business as 9 bar pressure is to an espresso. They’ve nailed social media, too – don’t take my word for it, check out their Instagram.

Right in the middle of Lemon Street Market, Fig is the ideal place to meet friends. While you’re there, grab a loaf from Baker Tom’s, jam from Halzephron and even gorgeous Scandi homewares from Illustrated Living. Rude not to.

This teensy cafe has everything you need for a quick pitstop – perfect for takeaway drinks and homemade goodies. If you’ve got time, you can also take a seat in the window and watch the world go by on historic Lemon Street.

Uneeka on Boscawen Street is a Truro favourite, with unusual handbags, jewellery, stationery and gifts downstairs and a fab cafe upstairs. Reliable wifi means it’s a great place to work and if you’re partial to the chair you’re sitting on for your mid-morning latte, you can buy that as well.

TRURO’S PARKS AND GARDENS

KEEPING THE CITY PRETTY

Who’s behind Truro’s award-winning parks and gardens? Richard Budge reveals all... Richard Budge heads the Parks Department at Truro City Council. His team are responsible for maintaining a number of parks, gardens and open spaces in the city, including Victoria Gardens, Boscawen Park and Daubuz Moor, an 18-acre wildlife site, plus sports facilities and children’s play areas. They’re also responsible for maintaining cemeteries, churchyards, allotments and toilets, and they contract grow for various town and parish councils in the area. How many people are in your team?

FACT We plant and tend 1,500 hanging baskets, window boxes and tubs in summer

12

We have a core team of 18 horticultural experts working to ensure Truro is blossoming. A main focus for us is the floral planting displays and hanging baskets on the approaches to Truro and in and around the city centre, and we’re very keen to build on our success in the Royal Horticultural Society’s annual Britain in Bloom competition, working with volunteer group

Truro in Bloom. We also run an annual Gardens and Allotments Competition, open to all local residents and judged on the last Thursday in June.

What does your typical day look like?

My day is mainly office-based, with constant phone calls and emails – and I have a large plan of things that need to be done, but it could involve anything from helping to deliver hanging baskets to local businesses

TRURO’S PARKS AND GARDENS

WOW Our team grows around 140,000 bedding plants each year

What’s your favourite spot?

to ordering machinery or vehicles, from managing our apprenticeship scheme to helping to dig a grave!

My absolute favourite area in the city is Kenwyn Churchyard during the springtime, which we maintain. Wild flowers, such as bluebells, ramsons and campions are out and all look amazing – even the celandines dotted among the headstones. To walk up there early on a spring morning and hear the dawn chorus is a real treat.

Look out for the city’s stunning spring flower displays with bedding plants including pansies, polyanthus, myosotis and wallflowers. Fantastic camellias and rhododendrons are out in flower in Victoria Gardens in spring. Wonderful magnolias, too. And don’t miss all the daffodils that flower through Morlaix Avenue and Green Lane, sponsored by the Hosking family at Fentongollan Farm.

We work closely with Truro in Bloom on the city’s entry to Britain in Bloom. We’re passionate about being involved as it promotes civic pride and ownership and offers a real opportunity to engage the community in making Truro a more attractive place to live and work. What I love about it is that it gets children across the city – schools, scouts, brownies and so on, involved in designing and planting.

What should we be looking out for in Truro’s parks and gardens in spring?

Can you tell us more about Truro in Bloom?

Retailers and other organisations are encouraged to decorate their premises with floral displays. We manage around 1,500 hanging baskets, window boxes and tubs on display in the city in summer, including 300 additional hanging baskets and floral displays funded by Totally Truro, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID). In 2015, we won gold in the national Britain in Bloom competition, Champion of Champions category, and the Portman Cup in the South West in Bloom competition. We’re building on our success and want to be at the forefront in planting schemes. We attempted 3D planting for the first time last year, working with a local engineer to create two freestanding Spitfires at Trafalgar roundabout to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. We’ve also experimented with planting lettuces rather than carpet bedding plants at the roundabout, and creating wild flower beds on the approach roads.

13

TRURO’S PARKS AND GARDENS

TEAM There are 18 people in the core parks department team, going up to 28 in summer

And you also support local community groups in their own campaigns?

AMAZING We plant 6,500 bulbs to create Truro’s floral displays

HUGE Truro has 60-70 acres of tended parks and public spaces

14

Yes, such as the transformation of car parking spaces behind Truro Community Library into a garden to inspire people to grow their own food at home. Furniss Island is a previously unloved patch of land that has been transformed into a garden and community green space. Another success story is the Friends of Boscawen Park community group raising more than £200,000 to help improve play and recreational facilities at the park. The new play area was unveiled last summer, including new climbing equipment, slides, a zipwire and sand areas.

Any exciting plans ahead?

We’re constantly seeking to improve the city’s open spaces and public facilities. Plans range from an education centre, new toilets and restoration work at Victoria Gardens to an ambitious multi-sports hub, athletics track and cafe at Boscawen Park.

Poldark’s Truro

22

When the BBC brought Poldark back to British TV screens in 2015, Truro had a starring role. BBC Radio Cornwall’s Debbie McCrory tells us more about Poldark’s Truro and the Poldark exhibition at the Royal Cornwall Museum.

ROYAL CORNWALL MUSEUM

While Corsham in Wiltshire doubled as Truro for filming, the city itself was Winston Graham’s true inspiration for the story and the location of choice for the world premiere of the new series. I was there in the Plaza Cinema with the cast and production team as Poldark was launched to an invited audience. We all watched episode one, hoping that this was going to be something special. And by jingo my luvvers it was! The casting worked so well on screen, but the star was Aidan Turner, bringing Ross Poldark, a dark, smouldering, broken man, back to Cornwall from the American War of Independence, to find his father dead, his mine, Wheal Leisure, in ruins, and his beloved Elizabeth marrying another man… And there the story begins. Winston Graham loved Truro, and back in the 18th century when the majority of the Poldark books are set, it had flourished thanks to improved mining methods and higher prices for tin. It was the place to be for wealthy mine owners. Ross and Demelza would have made many journeys to the city, walking past the elegant Georgian and Victorian townhouses on Lemon Street, named after the mining magnate and local MP Sir William Lemon. Demelza would have shopped in the cobbled Boscawen Street, the place to be seen for those in high society.

Tagging along after their master, Jud and Prudie would have gathered supplies from the port in Lemon Quay, and the busy market, to take back to Nampara. Graham named Ross’s mine Wheal Leisure, from a working mine in the Perranporth area, and he was often found in Truro studying archive documents of mine workings, getting the details right for the fate of Poldark and his many adventures. I’m a big fan of the Royal Cornwall Museum in River Street. Founded in 1818, it has housed thousands of exhibitions since it opened. My fondest memories on school trips are of the Trewinnard coach and the Egyptian mummy. I still get to go along in my work to report on new exhibitions, which I always find so interesting. The museum is a great place to get to know about Cornish history, but in a current exhibition you can discover more about Winston Graham, his writing life and his best known work. I love to stand and see Graham’s typewriter, drink in his notebooks showing his novels written in long hand, ponder the Poldark family tree with Graham’s research notes and gaze at the original manuscript of Bella Poldark, his last book in 2002, written a year before he died. The museum also has some of the scripts from the original BBC series. If you love the Poldark series and stories, and find yourself in Truro, take time to call in to the museum, and enjoy Poldark’s Cornwall – I have three times now!

ARCHITECTURE

GEORGIAN TRURO

Make sure to stop by at Lemon Street Gallery, a leading contemporary art gallery offering a vibrant programme of solo and group exhibitions over three floors. The gallery features a range of up-and-coming and established British artists, and is ideally placed to draw on Cornwall’s rich modernist tradition.

DISCOVER GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE RIGHT ACROSS THE CITY FROM TRURO’S GOLDEN AGE If you want to know more about Truro’s rich, proud and fascinating past, the best place to start is in the historic heart of the city. There, the handsome houses, civic buildings and public places – now home to shops and offices – offer tantalising glimpses of Truro’s golden era. The prosperity of Georgian Truro was the product of its success as a port and a stannary town, where locally-mined tin and copper were brought for assaying and stamping and then onward 24

shipment from the port. In the 18th and 19th centuries Truro began to grow, becoming a centre for fashionable, wealthy and influential people. Many of them had their homes in the grand Georgian townhouses that line Lemon Street. It’s well worth the walk uphill to the Lander Memorial, erected at the top of Lemon Street in 1835 to celebrate the discoveries (including the source of the Niger River) of local heroes Richard and John Lander.

The Assembly Rooms, built in 1780 on High Cross, in front of the west face of Truro Cathedral, was the venue for many splendid high society balls in Georgian times. You’ll recognise it by the busts of playwrights David Garrick and William Shakespeare above the first floor windows – and the Warrens Bakery below! Walsingham Place is a classic, curved Georgian terrace, and you’ll find more examples of Truro’s Georgian architecture in Princes Street, most notably Mansion House and Princes House, which today houses a collective of designers and specialists for weddings. Go on: don your best gown or breeches and come and explore!

TRURO IN BLOOM

ST PIRAN’S DAY (GOOL PERAN) SATURDAY, 5 MARCH 26

Photography: Jon Jacobs

TRURO IN BLOOM

In case you didn’t know, Cornwall has a patron saint. St Piran, originally the patron saint of tin miners, was adopted more widely by Cornwall having sailed here on a millstone. Quite a feat!

Every year on 5 March, events and parades are held across the county to mark St Piran’s Day, the annual day of Cornwall. Having started as one of the many tinners’ holidays observed by the tin miners, it’s now a chance to celebrate Cornwall’s heritage and identity. The St Piran’s Day parade in Truro is the longest-running parade of its kind. Expect lots of Cornish tartan, colourful banners and black-and-white Cornish flags – the flag of St Piran, no less, symbolising white tin on Cornish soil. The parade includes the Mayor of Truro, the MP for Truro and Falmouth, local dignitaries, schools and community groups.

It starts at Waterfall Gardens, off St George’s Road, at 1pm, proceeds through the city and finishes at High Cross, in front of Truro Cathedral. On Lemon Quay, kids will have the chance to make parade banners in the morning, and explore Cornish culture through storytelling, messy-play and singing and dancing. The sights and sounds will also include a St Piran’s Day food and craft market, together with a performance area showcasing Cornish comedy, music, dance and film. Kernow King and Dalla will top the bill at an evening event, starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are on sale from 20 February. For more information, go to: www.visittruro.org.uk 27

SALON DU CHOCOLAT and puppeteers will be on offer for children and adults in the festival hub on Lemon Quay. Street art is a big favourite and the city’s streets will be filled with creative flair once again. The literary content of the festival also grows each year. For 2016, The Story Republic will be igniting the imagination through speakeasies for young writers, wordsmith sessions and more. This year sees the launch of a three-year project for Truro Festival focusing on a forgotten Truronian from the 18th century. In his day, Samuel Foote was the first stand-up comedian and known as the funniest man in London. He was a Cornishman with a larger-than-life personality, who wowed audiences at his tea parties in the fashionable coffee houses of Covent Garden. The festival will be producing educational projects with local schools and installations re-establishing Foote as a celebrated Cornishman in his hometown.

TRURO CATHEDRAL

Cornwall’s Cathedral is situated right at the heart of Truro. Its three tall spires and amazing architecture dominate the city, making it one of the county’s most iconic buildings. With over 200,000 visitors a year, it’s one attraction not to miss!

WHEREVER YOU GO IN TRURO THE CATHEDRAL GOES WITH YOU AN INTRODUCTION BY THE DEAN OF TRURO, THE VERY REVEREND ROGER BUSH

38

On behalf of everyone at Truro Cathedral I would like to warmly welcome you to this beautiful building which means so much to so many people. Whether you are wanting to admire the architecture of the cathedral or would like a bit of peace and quiet, in search of refreshment from our restaurant or a gift from our shop, I hope that you will find something that makes your visit to the cathedral special and memorable. What makes the cathedral so special? The Victorian, gothic-style architecture certainly makes an impact, always drawing the eye upwards, and making for a highly photogenic building. But it is the inside of the cathedral that really draws admiration from our visitors. There are some stunning viewpoints, which when added to the following highlights, make it a must-see on any visitor’s itinerary. Plus, entry is free! We have the world’s biggest stained glass project ever manufactured including three beautiful round rose windows. We have a ‘church within a church’. When the cathedral was built, it incorporated part of the original Tudor church into its fabric; it is still the parish church for the city centre. And we are also the cathedral with a bend! There is a 6ft bend in the nave, not the mistake of the architects or builders, but a deliberate realignment to avoid having to purchase a set of houses on the cathedral’s south side. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT: WWW.TRUROCATHEDRAL.ORG.UK

The painting Cornubia, Land of the Saints by John Miller is just one of many monuments and memorials featuring Cornish saints in the cathedral. There are many others to be found in wood, stone and glass, serving as a reminder of Cornwall’s Celtic Christian heritage. Visitors are welcome to our services with an opportunity to hear our renowned choir sing Evensong, Monday to Friday and twice on Sundays during term-time. Monday to Thursday from Easter to October, there are free guided tours to learn about the cathedral’s fascinating history, as well as free Friday lunchtime organ recitals. Our coffee shop and restaurant serves an appetising lunch menu and delicious cream teas, and a trip to the cathedral shop will round off your visit perfectly, with gifts and books for all occasions, from baptisms to birthdays, and locallymade souvenirs. It’s always worth finding out what’s going on at the cathedral, too. Spring highlights include the Cathedral Choir Spring Concert on Friday, 4 March at 7pm. We’re serving a St Piran’s Day lunch, using the best fresh Cornish produce, in the Cathedral Restaurant on Saturday, 5 March from 12 to 2pm. Our Easter Day Service with the Cathedral Choir and the Bishop of Truro preaching, is on Sunday, 27 March at 10am. To round off spring, Aled Jones will be back by popular demand, with a concert in the cathedral on Saturday, 28 May at 7.30pm. @TRUROCATHEDRAL
