“I hope the audience will feel a fresh sense of connection to a story that has already successfully infiltrated the psyche of the Australian theatre and movie going public and get a sense of joy and understanding of who Aboriginal people are and walk away from ‘The Sapphires’ with a smile on their faces”, said Tony. Four young Aboriginal women from regional Australia, who like singing country music, suddenly get the chance to change their tune and their lives. Wearing uniforms of sequins, armed only with microphones they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War. The Sapphires is a funny, heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of writer Tony Brigg’s mother. It tells of the incredible journey of a singing group of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing Motown soul hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval. It is an energetic, fun and engaging play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams.

Jonathan Biggins

WARNING: Coarse Language

Jonathan Biggins’ performance as Paul Keating is well known from the longrunning Sydney Theatre Company success story, The Wharf Revue. Beyond the canny impersonation, Jonathan, like so many Australians, has long been fascinated by Keating and what Keating means to Australia. Showcasing his eviscerating wit, rich rhetoric and ego the size of Everest, The Gospel According to Paul distils Keating’s essence into 75 minutes, focussing on key biographical milestones, landmark political achievements and personal obsessions. It shows the man who grew up in the tribe of the Labor Party and gained an education at the knee of Jack Lang, who treated economics as an artform, and demanded we confront the wrongs of our colonial past. Biggins asks the question - what can we learn today from this singular politician, and the momentous time in our country’s history he dominated?

Orange Civic Theatre 2019 Subscription Season

ADULT $52.00

One of Australia’s favourite performers, Jonathan Biggins, is Paul Keating – visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser – in a highly anticipated new comedy, The Gospel According to Paul. Full of intelligence and wit, The Gospel According to Paul is a funny, insightful and occasionally poignant portrait of Paul Keating, the man that - as he tells it – single-handedly shaped contemporary Australia.

Her devotion to making a greater personal contribution and positive difference to the urgency of building peace was realised when she was made permanently injured in the London terrorist Bombings on July 7th, 2005. But Gill is much more than a survivor. Her presentation will focus on topics such as confidence and trust within ourselves, and how having both allows us to make transformational choices. Gill advocates for the growth of a more confident collective / communities, societies and as a nation. As a finalist for Australian of the Year, her platform centred on the importance of growing a confident and cohesive Australia. She speaks of change, or rather the negative connotation change has and how change-makers are often revered figures who are seen as ‘pioneers’ and ‘leaders’. She encourages audiences to take control of change through our choice of how we react and respond…and use it as opportunity.

Gill’s ability to discover moments of kindness and insight (and even humour) in her ordeal is astonishing and deeply moving. She tells her story in such a compelling manner; she generated a flood of warm responses from people who simply had to stop what they were doing, and just listen, spellbound, to her voice.’ Richard Fidler, ABC Radio

Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians navigate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this ground-breaking musical.

Much Ado About Nothing is a saucy and razor-sharp battle of wits between the bickering Beatrice and Benedick, who wield words as weapons, their banter betraying their love for each other. Claudio however is quickly consumed by envy and his idyllic world threatens to come tumbling down as he humiliates Hero. Beatrice and Benedick must join forces to defend true love – even if they can’t recognise it in themselves. But will truth and honesty win the day, and does love really conquer all? Directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director, James Evans ( Julius Caesar) and starring Zindzi Okenyo (Antony and Cleopatra, MTC’s An Ideal Husband) as Beatrice, this Much Ado About Nothing will be a powerful exploration of the struggle for identity and self-knowledge in a maledominated world. The pursuit of love is framed in a social context that enhances the darker themes in this timeless comic gem. Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s contemporary comedies where romance is thwarted by dastardly plots, misinformation, false accusations, broken promises, and bumbling cops. Or is it?

Back at the bus shelter Mark becomes so engrossed in Anna’s story, he begins to wonder how it would feel to be the child of someone as evil as Hitler. As the play evolves, Mark’s search for truth in a world of half-truths becomes clearer and the story culminates in the bombing of Berlin, the fall of the Third Reich and the end of Heidi’s innocence. Hitler’s Daughter poses powerful questions and examines moral issues in relation to society’s fears and prejudices. When Monkey Baa first presented Hitler’s Daughter in 2006, the notion of a factual and historical event being told through the ‘story’ of a fictional character was exciting in that it allowed audiences to immerse themselves in history as it came to life on stage. The audience is left with the lingering question, as Mark is: Did Hitler really have a daughter? Was she real? Today, in an age of fake news and fact manipulation, extreme ideologies and rising nationalism, there has never been a more important and relevant time to present this work. Hitler’s Daughter demands its young audiences to question the reality of truth, and notions of personal responsibility and prejudice.

The play begins early morning somewhere in the Australian countryside. Four children wait for the school bus and they decide to play a game; a simple game of story-telling. As they shelter in the bus stop from a raging storm, Anna creates an intriguing story and simultaneously on stage we begin to hear the bombing of Berlin and we see Heidi crawl from a bunker. With a large birthmark across her face, we discover that Heidi is the disfigured daughter of Hitler. Caught in the turmoil of war, she is hidden away by her father, one of the most dreaded men in history.

Starring UK-born Australian stage and screen star Naomi Price (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Rumour Has It, Ladies in Black, The Voice Australia) and inspired by true accounts, Lady Beatle is a rollicking magical mystery tour soundtracked by The Beatles’ biggest chart toppers, including Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Eleanor Rigby, Yellow Submarine and Penny Lane. Flanked by a live band, Price transports audiences to 1960s Liverpool, taking the audience along for the ride as she riffs off the cuff, invites them to join in the big numbers, and ultimately has them on their feet for the show’s epic mega-mix finale dance party. Lady Beatle proved a runaway hit when it premiered at La Boite in 2017, drawing capacity audiences and standing ovations at each performance and unanimous critical and audience acclaim. It epitomises The Little Red Company’s unmistakable brand of cabaret: tremendous heart and charm, world-class musicianship, seamless audience interaction, striking design and a triumphant central performance from Naomi Price.

“Naomi Price has the kind of voice that can raise goosebumps on arms when singing any song – combining this talent with the music of The Beatles is a stroke of genius… Fans of The Beatles will love the music, fans of cabaret will adore Price’s energy and emotional range.” Australian Stage

Featuring

It’s the 1950s in Shepparton, Victoria. Three generations of the Dear family live together in a rundown shack on the Goulburn River flats. Gladys yearns for a better life, a real home and a decent job. Her teenage daughter Dolly has dreams of becoming a nurse, while her resilient grandmother, Nan Dears, is resistant to change. Dolly falls for Errol, a travelling salesman, who offers her the prospect of another world. Together they embark on a journey of belonging where the search for a better life challenges the powerful bond that holds these women together. In this powerful and tender story, where dreams for a fair go lie, acclaimed playwright, Jane Harrison, pens one family’s struggle for community acceptance in the Menzies era of Australia.

“[Rainbow’s End] quietly makes its point, leaving you aware and impressed by the staunchness of these women, the gains they made and the dignity with which they dealt with hardship”

In 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar burst onto the worldwide stage and changed the face of musical theatre forever. Through the eyes of the betrayer, Judas Iscariot, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last days of the man he once loved and admired. Through Judas’ eyes, the very human soul beneath the divine icon is bared – troubled, doubting, loving and scared. A blazing score from Andrew Lloyd Webber of The Phantom of the Opera, Evita and Cats fame combines with Tim Rice’s inventive and evocative lyrics to make a musical still as devastatingly powerful as the first time it hit the stage. Nominated for eight Tony Awards and seven Olivier Awards over its almost 50 year history, the greatest rock opera ever created shines a light on the power of the human spirit. What would it take for you to betray the Son of God? And how would you feel if you did? Never before has a simple kiss on the cheek meant so much.
