The name “James Morrison” is known throughout the world for his sheer brilliance as a jazz musician and an allround entertainer. He is constantly on the move, touring everywhere and anywhere fine music has an audience. His recordings are best sellers and James works with the cream of the world’s best performers. Ray Brown called him “The Genius” and Dizzy Gillespie called him “One of The Best” but Wynton Marsalis summed it up: “Man, James Morrison can play!” The James Morrison Quartet will present an evening of swinging jazz standards, sublime ballads, and haunting Latin numbers with a few surprises thrown in. Featuring James’s sons Harry Morrison on Bass and William Morrison on Guitar as well as Patrick Danao on Drums, the Quartet will perform tunes spanning the history of jazz as well as originals by Morrison himself and other Australian jazz greats.

Health professionals are with us when we’re born, and they’re with us when we die. They devote their lives to caring for us, but how do we care for them? Can a doctor or nurse give a patient the best possible care if he or she hasn’t slept for days? What if they are also being bullied or sexually harassed at work? What if they complain about having to work excessive hours, but are told to stop whinging and suck it up? How do they cope with the pressure? Based on hours of in-depth interviews with doctors and nurses about their experiences of training and working in hospitals, Grace Under Pressure is a surprising, intimate, and deeply moving theatre experience that reveals these hidden stories of health professionals in their own words. Ranging from wildly funny to utterly heartbreaking, the stories within Grace Under Pressure will leave no audience member unaffected. Beautifully staged and disarmingly performed, Grace Under Pressure is a truly unique theatre experience.

Set sail on the high seas with Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comedy of starcrossed lovers, mismatched marriages and mistaken identities. Award winning director, Kate Gaul, makes her Hayes Theatre Co debut with this re-imagined, gender-bending, hyper-theatrical and kinky take on this Gilbert & Sullivan classic. This nautical caper overflowing with infectious tunes such as ‘I am the Monarch of the Sea’, ‘I’m Called Little Buttercup’ and ‘He is an Englishman’, H.M.S. Pinafore is a sharp satire of the English social hierarchical system of the Victorian Age. Pinafore’s extraordinary popularity in Britain, America and elsewhere was followed by the similar success of a series of Gilbert and Sullivan works, including The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. Don’t miss out on this rollicking farce and get set for some hysterical hi-jinks on the high seas.

Program Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. Korngold: Violin Concerto. Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

The Australian Doctors Orchestra held its first concert in 1993 in Melbourne following the vision of Hobart plastic surgeon and founder of the orchestra Dr Miklos Pohl. Since 1993 they have held at least one concert each year, have performed in the capital cities of every state and territory, and have ventured into many regional centres. The orchestra has members playing from all stages in their medical careers - students, junior hospital doctors, specialists in training, specialists and retired practitioners. They cover every specialty and area of medicine, but today are united in their love of music. Each concert also supports a local charity, and all members self fund their expenses, maximising donations to the charity. This year they are delighted to be coming to Orange and supporting the charity ‘Orange Push For Palliative’. In the charity’s words, ‘Everyone has an experience of losing someone that they love and care for. Everyone has a story to tell. Some memories are painful, some are peaceful and positive. But memories will always remain of that time.’ ‘Orange Push for Palliative’ is working to support the right of people to make real choices about how their last days are spent.

Igniting memories of a story that millions of Australians can relate to, Michaela Burger pays tribute to her Greek migrant family and hard-working, fun loving larrikin father Luke who defied all odds. From early morning deliveries for the family bakery at age seven, down opal mines in Coober Pedy at age sixteen and opening a chain of discount supermarkets in Adelaide, Luke’s road was not one for the faint-hearted. Premiering to a sell-out Adelaide Cabaret Festival season and Winner of the Frank Ford and Best Cabaret weekly awards for Adelaide Fringe 2019, this critically acclaimed work conveys an incredible true story, brought to life through original music written & performed by Burger alongside local community choirs. Featuring a live band, including piano and bouzouki, Michaela tells her family story with poignancy, heart and comical aplomb. The show is both hard-hitting and hilarious, traversing 100 years from Russia to the Australian outback – following the hardship, ingenuity, tragedy and triumph in all migrants’ stories.

Shipwrecked and separated 25 years earlier, two sets of long-lost twins miraculously find themselves in the same city on the same day. What could possibly go wrong? The Comedy of Errors is a hilarious romp of swapped identities, misguided love, mistaken imprisonment and chaotic mishaps, leading to an unbelievably crazy day for bumbling twins. At the heart of this tale of comedic misfortune is an old man searching for his lost children who has found himself in the fight of his life…to save his life. As far-fetched coincidences unfold, chaotic hilarity ensues and a man’s life could be saved — if only everything would go to plan. Directed by Janine Watson (Romeo and Juliet, Ensemble Theatre’s Unqualified) this is a beautiful story about reunion, wrapped up in an evening of entertainment and laughter. After a day of mistaken identity leading to unfair thrashings, wrongful arrests and false charges of infidelity, robbery, madness and even demonic possession, can the twins possibly reunite and live happily ever after?

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multiaward winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorises and satirises communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fuelled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of selfimposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again. Created by shake & stir and directed by Michael Futcher, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020.

Wallflowering, by award winning Australian playwright Peta Murray, is a delightfully amusing and poignant play about the nature of marriage, the pursuit of happiness and the perfect foxtrot! The play revolves around the lives of Peg and Cliff Small, an ordinary, suburban, middle aged couple who were once prizewinning ballroom dancers. The action is interspersed with ballroom dancing by a younger couple, who represent not only Peg and Cliff in their glory days, but also the older couple’s romantic, idealised view of themselves. While Cliff now has dreams of becoming a writer, but can get no further than writing lists of clever book titles, Peg on the other hand is no longer content to quietly and unquestioningly follow her husband. She wants to lead and sees the possibilities and excitement in change. These changes cause them to be out of step with each other and threaten their marriage. There is great comedy and pathos in the exploration of Cliff and Peggy’s “ordinary” lives. In the swish of a taffeta skirt and slide of patent shoes across the floor, the audience is transported to a glorious and romantic vision of our champions as perfectly synchronised, beautiful and extraordinary people.

On his first visit to England and Scotland, the 20 year-old Felix Mendelssohn was inspired to write his Hebrides Overture. The music portrays the heaving ocean and is one of the most famous works of this composer - full of wonderful melodies and joy. How do you paint Australia’s vast landscape, its changing seasons, its ancient indigenous culture, in musical sounds? In Kakadu, Peter Sculthorpe does just this. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante is written for violin, viola and chamber orchestra. The music is in parts grand, lyrical and playful, and a much-loved work, and is a wonderful way to complete the first half of the program. During the Second World War and under occupation, the Finnish Composer, Sibelius wrote this anthemic, passionate and patriotic work – Finlandia - a musical masterpiece. Benjamin Britten’s Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra spotlights each of the instrumental groups before the full orchestra comes together for a rousing finale. Marian Arnold will narrate this special performance. This is a concert for the young – and the young at heart. Not to be missed!

Dance Makers Collective

Dance Makers Collective have discovered a secret underworld of Dad dancing and for their new show they have asked their Dads to help them create it. The team interviewed their Dads and revealed secret headphone and tambourine routines, African Dance lovers, 1960’s Rock n Roll partner dancing and more. The dads won’t be busting their moves on stage in Dads, but audiences will hear the interviews recorded by their sons and daughters, and their musical preferences form the soundtrack to the show. The team have taken inspiration from the shared collective of family history with dance, memories of dance, and what becomes more than just daggy dad dance moves but a beautiful foray into the layman’s perspective on art. “The seeds of this show came from when I asked my dad to come into the dance studio with me one day,” Director Miranda Wheen says. Her dad Alan is a retired furniture removalist. “I had an idea that maybe he could choreograph something. But we got totally distracted by his opinions on dance, his preferred moves, where you should or shouldn’t dance, what music you need.” Alan also revealed he was a bit of a dancer himself. “He has wireless headphones at home and he dances in his bedroom with a tambourine. It’s hilarious, he has his own dance practice that I had no idea about!.”

A high energy, theatrical tap show celebrating women and female empowerment throughout the ages. The ladies of Girls On Tap multi-task (of course) live on stage - whether they are dancing, singing, tapping and playing the piano at the same time or using their daily hair care routine to tap out fun rhythms with a can of hair spray and a hair brush. Girls On Tap takes a look at female life both good and bad. Legacy and sisterhood vs betrayal by our female counterparts, stereotyping and objectification by the media. It’s not all noise and backstabbing though. We are making a statement, but we’re having a lot of fun doing it. Gershwin to Girl Power and everything in between. There’s a powerful, live rock version of Rolling in the Deep, a fierce Film Noir style jazz routine reminiscent of Golden Era classics like Band Wagon and Singing in the Rain, a tongue-in-cheek take on the stereotypical 1950s housewife, and so much more. A little bit of pop, rock and jazz: Girls On Tap is sure to appeal to people of all ages. Fabulous, female and guaranteed to entertain.

Don’t miss out on this one last hurrah as the indefatigable trio of Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott reunite with dazzling accomplice Mandy Bishop for one final victory lap of The Wharf Revue. It’s good night and good luck to the comedy juggernaut that’s been keeping the bastards honest since 2000. The bad news is that the planet is on fire and our world leaders are barely qualified to run a chook raffle. And the good? The Wharf Revue has fake news, fake hair and real laughs in abundance. No one is safe and no topic too taboo in this night of sketches, songs and side-splitting satire. You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll want to move to New Zealand!

Director Lindsay Punch

Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 13 countries. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. This “tale as old as time” offers a great opportunity to experience family theatre at its best.

Edward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun. Meanwhile the Keepers are in hot pursuit, hunting high and low to relocate their crowd-pleasing, much-loved feathered attraction. Edward stays one step ahead until he’s ready to head home; concluding that being an emu might be just right after all. Back at HIS pen, a very shocking but welcome surprise awaits... he’s been replaced by the rather wonderful Edwina the Emu! Lonely no more, the pair are soon the expectant parents of 10 eggs. With the impending arrival of their large family, Edwina is driven to find the right job to support her brood. Whilst Edward assumes nesting duties, she throws her hat in the job-market ring and heads out into the world. Trying all sorts of roles on for size, from dancer to waiter, she discovers she’s not the right fit for any of the human jobs! The award-winning Monkey Baa team brings to the stage the classic Australian tale of two emus searching for their identity. The emus’ journey of hilarity and tenderness leads them to discover that the best thing you can be is …. you!

By a Thread is a new ensemble circus creation exploring the relationship between trust and play on an innovative aerial apparatus. Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a precise negotiation of cause and effect. The performers use this metaphor for connectedness to explore the give and take, balance, and dynamics of relating to one another. Leaving the realm of the solo act where the performer relies on their individual strength, our acrobats rely on the strength of the group to hold the end of the rope, keeping them aloft. By a Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics and spectacular skills from some of Australia’s best circus artists. With intense training in a breadth of contemporary circus disciplines, the performers have pooled their knowledge and skills, and then exploded the traditional boundaries of these disciplines to create a show where classic techniques are used in expansive ways and new skills are made possible.
