A miniature wooden town is encircled by several lakes. This is Trakai we know. Moreover, historical capital of ancient Lithuania fascinates with its wooden architecture, medieval castles, and magnificent scenery and at the same time – a modern face of the town. Trakai can be proclaimed being one of the most visited spots on the cultural tourism map. The former capital with all the ancient castles lies beside the current Vilnius metropolis and now is the attribute of Lithuanian tourism. Trakai cannot be imagined without the residencies of Lithuanian Grand Dukes living earlier in the Island and Peninsula Castles, karaites ethnography as well as sacred exhibitions. The pride of Lithuania, Trakai is the only castle in all Eastern Europe, situated in the island. At the end of the 14th-15th century Trakai castle was a summer residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The medieval character of Trakai is used by numerous knights’ clubs that regularly organize their tournaments. The staging of ancient battles adds more effect to the Trakai castle. А tourist sometimes has a feeling that he is somewhere on a Medieval battlefield. In general Trakai exploits its historical heritage quite skillfully periodically organizing not only competitions for the knights in their armor but also different mass shows. A good example is the staging of the opera “Pilenai”. Lovely is the nature of Trakai and its surroundings. Admirers of secluded and cosy hideaways and those who long for vast panoramas, wide open space and high skies can find much here to feast their eyes on. This is what Trakai is unique for and well-known for like a resort area.

We kindly invite you to Trakai and promise warmest possible welcome and the highest quality of tourist services. www.trakai-visit.lt VILNIUS

PLACES OF INTEREST Trakai Church of the Visitation of the blessed Virgin Mary (XVth c.)

Užutrakis Manor Estate (XIX-XXth c.)

Birutės str. 5, Trakai (Nr.2 C4)

(Nr.10 D1)

The Church was endowed by Grand Duke Vytautas in 1409. In the middle of the Baroque great altar hangs the famous wonder-working icon of Our Lady of Trakai. Legend has it that in 1390 this picture was donated to Grand duke Vytautas by the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaeologos and that around 1409 Vytautas donated it to his church in Trakai. The picture soon became famous for its miracles and it drew piligrims from across the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland.

Užutrakis manor ensemble was created in 1897-1902 by count Józef Tyszkiewicz and his wife duchess Jadwiga SwiętopułkCzetwertyńska. Historicistic style Užutrakis palace was built following a project by a famous architect of Warsaw - J. Huss. Representational parterres are surrounded by a landscape style park designed by French landscape architect and biologist E. F. André. There are ponds, a comfortable net of pathways, and groups of artificial cliffs that create an impression of a mountain landscape. In our days Užutrakis Manor Estate is used for various events.

Peninsular Castle (XIVth c.)

Karaim Street -”Small town”

Kęstučio str., Trakai (Nr.6 C3)

(C3 B3 A2)

Construction work on the castle was begun by Grand Duke Kęstutis around 1350-77. This castle was part of a defensive ensemble that guarded Trakai and Vilnius that was attacked by the Teutonic Order and ruined in 1382, 1383 and 1390. In the early 16 century it was a place where high-ranking prisoners were held and plots of land began to be carved off for donations to noblemen. After 1655 buildings that were seriously damaged during the war with Muscovy were left derelict and unused. www.trakaimuziejus.lt www.viduramziai.lt

Kenesset (XIXth c.)

(Nr.9 C2)

Karaimų str. 30, Trakai (Nr. 8, C3)

It is the only castle in Eastern Europe that was built on an island. It is assumed that construction of the Island castle was initiated by Grand Duke Kęstutis at the end of the XIVth century, and was completed in early XVth century by his son - Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas. After the Battle of Grunwald (1410) the castle lost its defence significance and gained the function of princely residence. Grand Duke Vytautas died in the castle on October 27 1430 while still waiting for a royal crown and after his death the castle began to fall into decay. In 1962 the castle became home to the Trakai History Museum.

The Karaim house of worship. A kenesset has stood in Karaim territory since the fourteenth century in what is called the Small Town. It was ruined by fire several times and in XIX-th century was reconstructed on the same place. That is what we see now.

Nr.10

The Karaims are a separate branch of Trakai history. In 1397 the Grand Duke Vytautas after his victorious march to the Black Sea brought from Crimea several hundreds of Karaim families and settled them in Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Karaims were settled in Trakai between two castles of The Grand Duke, nowadays it‘s Karaim Street. Several dozen of Karaim families still live here up to the present time. At the beginning (during the first hundred years) the Karaims were in charge of the castles’ guard, afterwards they were mostly occupied with agriculture, gardening, horse-breeding, trade and crafts, and with time they became so close to Lithuania that did not differ from the local people in their life style. Trakai had always been the community‘s administrative and spiritual centre in Lithuania.

ACTIVE LEISURE & NATURE Trakai is a wonderful place for everybody ready for a good rest. The most attractive feature of the region is the diversity of activities available here for tourists. While travelling through Trakai region, one has an opportunity both to feel the atmosphere of the old times and try the trendiest of outdoor recreation. Travellers may feel themselves as characters of the adventure movie at Trakai lakes as the lakes and rivers in Trakai region will reveal them the mosaic of unexpected views. There are many rental places for boats, the sailing-boats, pontoon boats, canoes, water bicycles, yachts, big steamer in Galvė lake. You will admire the castle of Trakai, Užutrakis Manor Estate and islands of lake Galvė. The Trakai Historical National Park is a one among the total of five national parks that Lithuania has and is the smallest among them at just 8,200 hectares. The park contains a total of 32 lakes, one or two ethnographic sights of particular interest and the town of Trakai itself. A population of 14,000 rosy-faced locals, of whom many remain tied to the land, sprinkle the park with humanity, giving it an agreeable lived-in feel lacking in many other rural areas in the country. The proud recipient of national park status in 1992, Trakai Historical National Park is currently awaiting news of its application to become a Unesco World Heritage site. Things in its favour include its aforementioned comeliness and the town inside it that gives it its name, woodlands brimming with wildlife, traditional farmsteads and villages, manor houses, heaps of fresh air and a sense of having gone back in time. Things against, of which there are few, include a continuing lack of infrastructure and a patchwork of narrow, hairpin-strewn roads occupied by drivers who’ve seemingly lost the will to live and wish only to take you with them. For more information about the park, browse the park’s website online at www.seniejitrakai.lt.
