The Open-Air Museum Ballenberg with its old houses, animals, gardens and workshops is a sort of walk-through history book which offers stimulating access to a multitude of historical themes. Connect with history!

Welcome to Ballenberg! In more than one hundred historic buildings visitors to Ballenberg can look around as the fancy takes them, and get an idea of what life was like in years gone by. Traditionally useful plants, vegetables and medicinal herbs are exhibited in the gardens. Various displays throw light on selected aspects of rural life then and now. Handicrafts are given a special place: in several of the workshops professional craftsmen and women are at work, demonstrating their skills in the rope-making factory, for instance, or in the saddlery or the smithy. Do you know how a basket is woven? How bobbin lace-making works? Or filet crocheting? What shingling is, or charcoal burning? For groups and schoolchildren Ballenberg offers guided tours and activity programmes that provide deeper insight into certain domains. What was it like in those times to bake a loaf of bread? How did the farmers‘ wives manage to cook in their simple kitchens? How much skill was required to carve a small wooden shoe? Roll up your sleeves and try it out yourself!

Group programmes For visiting groups we have special guided tours which focus on particular themes according to interest. For example, there are thematic tours about life in the alpine pastures, or about naturopathy, or the ceremonies relating to marriage, birth and death. In the activity programmes emphasis is placed on real experience: visitors try out their hand at baking bread, cooking on a wood-fired stove, or they can test their skills in a variety of other disciplines. These activities can be booked in parallel. Of course we also accept bookings from small groups of up to 10 visitors for our group programmes.

TOURS: GENERAL

Guided tour through Ballenberg Each house tells its own story. Often a hidden corner reveals a new perspective on the past. A tour helps to sharpen one’s eye for detail – here there‘s a hidden inscription to be read, there a long-forgotten object to be discovered. Our staff are infused with the Ballenberg fever – and it’s contagious! The guided tours cover themes such as architecture, rural life and activities, gardens, animals, customs, and crafts.

GUIDED TOURS ON ALPINE FARMING

Idyllic world or hard daily grind? Ever since «Heidi» appeared on the scene, the Swiss Alps have come to symbolize throughout the world a unique place in nature, a sort of idyllic world in miniature. However, life on the mountain was seldom idyllic. This theme-based tour shows both the bright and the dark side of alpine life, and explains regional differences. Thus, for example, the small Dwelling from Blatten illustrates the problem of space in the village, while the interior clearly shows in what cramped conditions the families in the Lötschen valley lived in bygone centuries.

TOURS: ARCHITECTURE

Rural buildings have stories to tell The architecture of rural Switzerland is very varied and shows a surprising degree of innovativeness. The special tour focuses on small details and traces major changes. Modifications and conversions often reflect the progress of economic history. The architectural walk covers a broad spectrum from baroque church architecture to the less pronounced aesthetic of workshops. A particular aspect is the visit to the old House from Matten (16th century) which has been converted to today’s requirements in line with modern standards.

TOURS: HANDICRAFTS

A treasure trove of skills The world of handicrafts was and remains incredibly varied. In past centuries there was a broad range of specialists on the land who complemented each other and were also partially interdependent. This theme-based tour shows craft activities which are nowadays almost forgotten yet still indispensable. A visit to the Museum’s workshops shows how traditions have survived and how these days old skills can be newly applied.

TOURS: RITUALS

Marriage – birth – death Life’s rituals form the framework of the biography of each human being. The rites of passage from one phase of life to the next take on different forms according to the historical period or cultural origin. Displays depicting the most important rites of passage show how society dealt with joy and suffering in the various regions of Switzerland, and what roles the men and women played. This thematic tour helps to understand the context of previous centuries and their particular customs which appear strange when seen from a modern standpoint.

TOURS: NATURAL HEALING POWERS

Drugstore and herb garden A treasure of magical herbs grows in the medicinal herb garden of the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. Their powers lie in the curative qualities which they can develop. In former times knowledge of the art of healing in the country was a part of everyday life. This special tour concentrates on certain individual herbs and their possible applications, showing the various stages of their transformation into a healing product. A comparison of the old and modern forms of medicine, together with the different processes involved, reveals some fascinating facts.

TOURS: TICINO

Rambling through Switzerland’s sun-lounge The tour of the Ticino section of the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum reveals some special facets of the history of the Ticino. Very different styles of architecture and ways of life were always to be found in a small area. Because of the topography, agriculture and animal husbandry involved strenuous exertion for farming families. Special attention is devoted to the north-south traffic and emigration, as well as to particularities such as chestnuts and silkworm breeding.

GROUPS: THE TREAT PROGRAMMES

Bread from the wood-burning oven Home-baked bread tastes fantastic, particularly when it comes fresh from a wood-burning oven. Under guidance the visitors shape their own loaf of bread and thus learn a lot first-hand about the art of baking and garnishing. Each type of loaf tells its own story; making bread was not always as straightforward throughout the ages as it is today. While the loaves are being baked in the oven there‘s time to learn about the background to the cultivation of cereals and the general food situation in country areas.

Aroma workshop It is well-known that much depends on aroma – so it’s worth becoming a professional in this field. In the Aroma Workshop group programme participants take the first steps towards expertise and produce their own perfume spray. First they take a look at the Ballenberg scent garden and perfume cellar, then follows aroma production under the guidance of a specialist. Here 100 % pure essential oils come into play. Of course, guests can take their Ballenberg perfume home with them.

GROUPS: THE TREAT PROGRAMMES

Healing power from the garden Long ago knowledge of the healing powers of plants was widespread in rural areas. Much of this knowledge has been preserved in the medicinal herb garden of the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. The groups start their programme in this garden and learn about different medicinal plants. They then get a look at the process of tea blending and produce their own herb tea. At the end all participants take their magic potion away with them.

GROUPS: THE TREAT PROGRAMMES

Cooking in historical kitchens Cooking and eating together is a special group experience. All the more so when it all takes place in historical rooms. What must it have been like to feed a family with the simplest of means? To cook without electricity or running water? For this programme groups have the kitchens of two 18th century farmhouses at their disposal. Participants are introduced to the instruments, and are assisted in lighting the fire and boiling the water. Then there’s the cooking and – if all goes well – a meal in the farmhouse parlour, of course.

Alpine horn blowing is, naturally, also on the programme. If desired, prize-winning competitions can be organized. Smaller groups of less than 10 people on request.

Building a blockhouse oneself Who in today’s western world is capable of building a roof over his own head? In the Blockhaus active programme the groups erect a blockhouse in the shortest possible time. Admittedly it is served up to you on a plate, so to speak: the wood is ready and numbered with Roman numerals that correspond to the construction plan. The buildings tell of life as it then was, of the joys and suffering of everyday existence. In this way history becomes tangible. Who would not like to poke his nose into everything, really everything? It is this very urge that forms the basis of the guided tour programme “Scents and Smells“. The school children visit houses and stables, literally following their noses. What do cows and pigs smell like? The children sniff their way through a smokehouse kitchen, sharpening their senses as they recognize various natural materials by their smell. Do aromas recall memories? Every child gets to take home a full sachet of aromas as a fragrant souvenir.

Stories about bread Bread is one of those everyday things which we most take for granted nowadays. But what are the ingredients required for making it? What does the path from the grain to the finished loaf of bread look like? Where and how did people bake their bread 100 years ago? In the Stories about Bread programme the school children try their hand at bread making. They shape and garnish their own loaf. While it is being baked in the traditional oven the children learn a lot about the old tools used for processing the grain, and find out about living conditions in former times. At the end of the tour each child carries away from the bake house a flavoursome loaf of fresh bread.

School before 1900 It would certainly suit lots of today‘s schoolchildren down to the ground if they did not have to go to school every day. But what about not having any school to go to, or there being a school which one is not allowed to attend? Before 1900 it was by no means a matter of course for all children to go to school. The programme shows how boys and girls lived in former times, what types of work they had to do, and what they played with. On the way to the historical schoolroom the groups visit different houses, and later they have a lesson in the style experienced by their forbears.

Houses – as diverse as Switzerland itself Every region in Switzerland has its characteristic style of architecture and traditional building methods which still today characterize the villages and hamlets. This is immediately apparent at Ballenberg. But what techniques did people use to build their houses in former times? In this programme the children learn about the craft skills that were required. They find out what a shingles maker can do (shingle-making is a craft which has now all but disappeared), or how a binding compound is made for building walls out of burnt limestone. Everyone has to lend a hand when it comes to moving a tree trunk without a crane.

Magical herbs from the garden Herbs can treat many things, particularly in the medicinal herb garden of the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. In earlier times rural medicine was very varied. Every family had its own recipes and home cures. The school children learn about simple remedies. They look for plants which they know, and reflect on the role these plants could play in the family medicine cabinet. All the children prepare a tea mixture as a miracle cure for all eventualities, and they can take it home with them.

Hired-labour children speak out Transplanted into another world, exploited and excluded: the fate of the children once taken from their families and hired out as cheap labour in Switzerland is a dark chapter of Swiss history that raises many questions. What takes place in the head of a child that is separated from its parents and grows up in a new environment? How does one come to terms with being a stranger, having no parents, being excluded? The exhibition “The hired-labour children speak out” gives the floor to those directly concerned. In various recorded spoken documents they talk about their lives, their memories and how they dealt with their experiences.
