Description 1. Why did you choose this hotel room? The basis for the choice - rational / emotional / experiential Ans. There are many reasons to choose this resort, the fist and the main reason was that - I have visited this resort in one of my tripe to Sri Lanka. Adding to that I am a very nature loving person, so as soon as we enter this room we feel like we are admits of a forest. The balcony and washroom of the rooms play the major roles in the experience part of the room - oping to the huge forest and the lake.

2. How does this connect to the context? Context - local - physical & cultural / brand / typology of hotel rooms

Reference Image

Ans. As the resort is built on a mountain in the concept the designer followed according to me “Form followed context” . The form of the resort is just like it is hugging the mountain. This resort is spread to almost 1km on this mountain. The lake and forest beside the mountain played a major roles inn the orientation of the room, all of the rooms are facing the forest and the lake none of the room are facing the mountain. This way the physical context played a major role in designing the resort. The typology of the room is “Modern Contemporary”. This typology was chosen because the designer wanted to person to be close to the nature but at the same time have a luxury of staying in a resort.

3. What experience do you think that the designer had intended? Ans. The experience the designer intended is that the person should feel like he is staying admits a forest with all the luxuries possible. The experience of being staying in the forest is given by the huge windows, balcony and the window just beside the personal jacuzzi in the washroom. All the luxuries are experiences by all the amenities offered by the resort like, gym, pool, indoor games and personal jacuzzi in all Deluxe rooms, Suite, Luxury Suite and Royal Suites.

Perceptive Unraveling There are totally 7 types of rooms in the whole resort- Superior Room - Panoramic Room - Luxury Room - Deluxe Room - Suite - Luxury Suite - Royal Suite The type of room I have chosen is Deluxe room. With expansive views over the Kandalama Lake and the hills of Dambulla, hotel amenities in Deluxe Rooms are of the most delightful kind. You will find beauty within the room as well as without; with the elegant decor in earthy tones perfectly complementing the stately wood fittings and floor. All the cozy comforts you need are also there to make it a special haven you feel instantly at home. As soon as you enter the room you will come across an astounding view of the Dumbulla hills and kandalama lake. Then when you go forward you will realize that all the whole room is earthy tones to compliment the forest and the lake. And a we enter the washroom the window just beside the personal jacuzzi will just nit let you leave the jacuzzi.

Material Tracing As the resort is just beside the forest, most of the material used it wood. All of the furniture is made of wood and the wall cladding on one side is also done with wooden battens. The wood available in Sri Lanka is in such a way that traditional joineries of wood would work efficiently without any external hardware.

The Pink Rabbit Restaurant 43

Space Planning Since this is an adaptive reuse project, the main built structure is already built and the only exploration possible was with the interiors. The planning of the spaces and the placement of the furniture is done according to the existing architectural elements. The indoor bar is to right side as you the enter the restaurant and has a lounge adjacent to it, if anyone does not wants to sit at the bar table.

This is the first thing as you enter the restaurant. This serves for the communal dining, and private dining. The concept of open kitchen enhances the experience of dining.

The restaurant also provides private dining, and the placement of the private dining is also not directly accessible

The communal sitting has different types of clusters of tables and these clusters depends on the no, of people it ad accommodate and the view it offers to the users.

The restaurant also provides an indoor space for cigar smokers so that the people don’t smoke in the communal area which is far in proximity to the common area.

The restaurant also provides an outdoor space also for cigar smokers so that the people who don’t smoke in the air conditioned area can come to an open space to smoke a cigar.

The back of house kitchen serves to all the dining areas and the bar. Since it has to serve to all the dining area the proximity of the back of house kitchen is nearer to the open kitchen and the bar.

44

Color The color scheme is done according to the VUE chain of hotels. They usually follow the dark color theme and create a dramatic experience in all of their spaces. When we think of the dark theme Black is the first color that comes to our minds. In the restaurant the black color acts as a background and gold, blue, brown and peach colors act as a foreground. In this restaurant the whole form is painted black leaving the floor. The floor is finished wooden flooring resulting in the shades of brown - this indicates that the form is very dark and the all the furniture complimenting of the dark scheme are very light and bright in color.

45

Textures and Patterns There are no patterns used in this spaces but textures are used including the wall texture and the texture on the furniture.

Reception and Lounge

48

Space Planning

After the user cross the cafe first comes a concierge, which can be used if the user wants to go to another destination or a cab booking to be done or canceled can be done without going till the reception area.

The front office is placed just beside the reception so that if the receptionist encounters any issues the manager can handle the situation or if the customers wants to met the manager.

The cleaners store is also placed close to the reception and the lounge area so the cleaning does not become an issue in these places and this would be the first impression of the customer willing to stay in this hotel.

The lounge area is just beside the reception area, so that if the customer is supposed to wait for the room to get assigned. He can rest for the time being in the lounge area and the enjoy the refreshments offered by the hotel.

There is a luggage store placed beside the lounge area. The customers resting in the lounge area can put their in the luggage store and the staff working there also can put their luggage there during the working hours.

This is the main reception desk of the whole hotel. From here all the customers are guided to their alloted rooms.

49

Color Following the color theme of the chain of hotels of VUE. All the walls are colored black and the furniture has a very bright upholstery to make the space bright.

Lounge Area

Reception

The black color con sizes the space where as the bright colors of the furniture contradicts to it and makes the space more lively and livable.

Lounge Area

Reception

The colors in the spaces are selected in such a way that the theme of the brand is remained and the space is also lively and spacious. The colors used on the upholstery is in such a way that they stand out in the space and catches the eyes on the first glance.

The color scheme used in this space is in such a way that the reception table gets enhanced, since it is the main function of the space. The whole space is in black except the table and the chairs associated to it.

50

Lighting Reception

This is the main ambient lighting in the space. The lighting also follows the concept of lines and These table lamps are used as task lighting at the desk. The lamps are not only the sources of geometry. The ambient light is in such a way that it compliments dark theme and does not let light but also compliments the concept. the space feel compact.

Lounge Area

In the lounge area all the lights are placed after a certain level, so that when a person sits no This light fixture and the light in it drops the shadow on the floor which acts as an ambient light light hits his eyes and disturbs the eyes. This also follows the concept of geometry and lines. and also as a accent light at the same time.

All the colors used are very light and pastels colors so that they make the space look bigger than it is. Since it is a spa the atmosphere in the space should also very pleasant and soothing to eyes and mind, none of these colors should stimulate the eyes or the mind of the user.

54

Lighting

The main space is light by the natural light in day. Artificial light is not required to light up this space in the morning because the space has 2 side totally open which gives a beautiful view of the sea.

In the private spa, the major source of light is the window. The window give a huge amount of natural to the space. The ceiling light and the floor light are just ambient light to the space.

At night the source of light is from the floor which gives the reflection on water on the roof.

The main source of light at the pool is in the pool. The light is placed inside the pool so that there is a reflection of light on the ceiling, which emphasizes on the experience.

The path way to reach the private rooms from the main space have floor flushed lights. This emphasizes the path and is a candy to the eye.

55

Banquet Hall

56

Site Plan & Space Planning

This storage is like a perfunction hall for the banquet hall. This is places just behind banquet hall so that if anything is needed in urgency it can be accessible.

The kitchen is also attached to the banquet hall. The food can be transfered easily and proximity is also near.

The main banquet hall in the whole building with all the amenities around it.

Pattern

Due to the black lines on the ceiling, the space feels elongated than it is. This pattern gives the space a certain geometry and symmetry.

Without the pattern on the ceiling, space looks flat and does not give any character to the space.

The pattern that is given on the flooring gives the space a character of richness and doe not leave the space empty.

In the absence of the pattern the space looks flat. The character the pattern gives the space is making.

59

Lighting The main sources of light for this space are the ceiling and the window on one side of the room.

There are cove lights and chandeliers on the ceiling which act as the ambient lighting in the space.

One of the 4 walls of the hall is of glass which acts as a sources of light to the space but also acts as the backdrop for the stage or the event.

The exterior is so well integrated to the interiors of the banquet hall that the exterior view acts at the backdrop to the stage and also give huge amount sunlight to the space.

1. What are the factors that will impact (or) influence the concept? Ans. The factors on which the concept will get influenced or impacted are: - The immediate and farther physical context - Cultural context that is followed in the locality where the site is located. - Designers take and view about the site and its location. - Which experience would the user prefer according to the designer. 2. What role does the context play in developing the concept? Ans. - In some cases the context becomes the concept. - It plays a role of a deciding factor for form finalization and material selection. - The context makes sure that the concept gives a strong relation between the nature and the building. 3. How do you consider context? Ans. I consider context as everything and building as nothing as compared to the context. 4. How dose one integrate contextual references to the concept?

Concept:Standing on the mountains covered with dense forest and facing the gigantic Kanchenjunga range, you just forget where you are and just get mesmerized with the beauty of the nature. Assuming you are looking through a frame, the dense forests and the trees act as the foreground and the white mountains as the background. The way both of them compliment each other to make the frame the most beautiful is just like how husband and wife compliment and support each other to make their marriage life the most memorable and beautiful one. Viewing this great view for a few moments is pleasure, but staying amidst the nature and experiencing the view is a luxury. The concept for the design arises from the same. A simple building on the mountains between the forest and has a view of the white mountain ranges from almost all of the spaces is just a luxury and nothing else. The building gets architecturally integrated into the context is such a way that, if the building is not placed there the whole frame feels incomplete. The space planning, material palette and the color palette in all the spaces will be in such a way that the view becomes the highlight of the space. Once you enter the space the only thing you will see at the first glance is the mesmerizing view of the snow mountains and the tree around the building but not the interior design of the space. Not only architecturally but every single space in the hotel integrates to the context around it by giving a the wonderful connection to the context.

Ans. In my case I have interpreted the building to the concept.
