Cover Artist - Daniel Del Orfano is a New York artist who was born and raised on Long Island. He received his BFA in Art Education at Dowling College in Oakdale, and was teaching full time by the fall of 2001. Though extremely rewarding, this was not his true calling and Daniel decided to divert his attention from teaching art to creating art. In the summer of 2005, he formed The Renaissance Workshop. As demand for commissioned work increased, Daniel began developing his expressive style, implementing techniques that emphasized texture over realism. Though the work depicted realistic scenes, the effects produced an almost ethereal feeling. Daniel Del Orfano’s work depicts life, not as it may be, but more as it is remembered - a snapshot, not of a particular moment but of an overall memory. (On the cover: “The Long Good Bye” available at LaMantia Gallery - 127 Main Street, Northport)

I

t's hard to believe that I'm writing this on the first day of February. It seems like it was only yesterday that we were dealing with Sandy, and soon after that, the anticipated end of the world. Well, it's plain to see that we are still here and that life does go on. These past few months have been difficult and trying for everyone. It was nice to see that as a whole we are all in the same boat and we will put others before ourselves. It makes me happy that even with the world around us getting smaller and technology soaring beyond anything most of us could imagine, we are still a community and we are still dependent on each other for survival. Spring seems to be just around the corner and with it a promise for new beginnings. As the great Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Take the first steps in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step."

Frida Kahla Clothing Exhibit

A

lmost six decades after her death, the closet of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo has been opened and is on display at the Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City in an exhibit titled Appearances Can Be Deceiving: The Dresses of Frida Kahlo. Famous not only for her artwork, but also for her eclectic sense of style, this is the first time that the public can get a view of the hidden world of this amazing woman Her treasures remained hidden partially because her husband, artist Diego Rivera was so concerned that anyone who entered her closet would ruin what was inside. Untouched till 2002, when museum curators opened it, there were over 300 items including love letters, photographs, perfumes, boots and jewels. Her colorful embroidered skirts, floral headpieces and jewelry were heavily inspired by her Mexican heritage, and contributed in making her an icon in her native country and worldwide. In addition, much of Frieda's clothing still had traces of her paint, her cigarettes and perfume! Kahlo’s life which was filled with suffering from multiple illnesses and injury, served as inspiration for her surreal work. She continues to heavily influence the work of fashion designers worldwide like Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen, among many others. The exhibition is sponsored by Vogue Mexico.

Nowadays Shmowadays We were shocked when my mother told us to return her Christmas gift. “But Ma, nowadays everyone has a microwave oven!” “Nowadays shmowadays” she said. So we returned it and she happily continued to cook great meals in her low-tech oven. For me, the microwave oven is an amazing must-have invention. I bought one right away. But, for many people change comes slowly or not at all (and they survive). With microwave ovens fading into the seemingly simpler past, “nowadays” has become a complex place filled with computers, internet, smartphones, apps and an untold number of slick gadgets that provide additional ways of doing old tasks. For instance, nowadays we have new methods of communicating with others. Sure, you can still do it the old-fashioned way -- visiting, writing letters or phoning -- but nowadays, you can also stay in touch via emails, text messages, Skype and Facebook. Each has its pros and cons, risks and benefits but for many seniors social contact is vital and these additional communication aids can help make life more enjoyable. I like shopping in stores. It provides exercise as well as something to do. However, when looking for a specific item, it’s difficult to know which stores have it and which has the lowest price. To determine this the old-fashioned way you’d leaf through newspaper ads and catalogs or perhaps drive from store to store -- or maybe even try calling ahead -- but nowadays, internet search engines can obtain this information immediately. For people who cannot get to a store, they can, of course, shop via catalog and call in their purchases, but again it’s far more efficient to do it via internet. I know people who are able to learn from books, however most of us require some personalized classroom help. As a Long Islander you have the distinct opportunity of taking gadget-oriented classes geared specifically to seniors at SeniorNet. As a result, many SeniorNet students have been gratefully transported to nowadays. So when you rip open a gift from a well-meaning child and find a new tech gadget staring at you, how will you react? Will you see it as a ticket to nowadays or will it be a “shmowadays” moment? Nick Radesca is a volunteer at SeniorNet FSL, a not-for-profit learning center dedicated to training seniors in computer technology (seniornethuntington.org). He can be reached at 631-427-3700, x268 or nick2p@yahoo.com.

A Gift from the Heart T

ake a moment and think about those who you love or who are important in your life. Think of the people who you just know will always be there for you, ready and willing to lend a helping hand or offer you support of any kind. Have you ever taken them for granted? We all appreciate being loved, encouraged and supported. However, how often do you actually take the time to offer it by letting someone know just exactly how much they are loved and appreciated by you? This Valentine’s Day I invite you to make A Gift from the Heart. Start by picking a person(s) to whom you’d like to write a letter of appreciation or acknowledgment. Focus upon that person and how their being in your life has enriched you and made your life more complete. Remember the special times you’ve shared, those times you’ve laughed and had fun together, or worked together or even learned lessons of life from one another. To get your juices flowing, ask yourself these questions: · How has this person make a difference in my life? · What do I love and admire about them? · How do I feel when I am with them? · Why am I proud of them? · How have they inspired me? Then write a brief letter to that person including one or more of the following answers: Dear ___________________, The things I admire and value about you most are… One of the best times I’ve ever had with you was… I am proud of you because… I am grateful to you for… What I wish for you most is… I suggest you hand write the note rather than sending an email, which can be quickly deleted. A plain sheet of paper is fine, or you can buy a greeting card or even get creative and make one. This Gift from the Heart will be greatly treasured. It likely will be read over and over again. In fact, one of my students wrote a letter of appreciation to a co-worker and because she used specialty paper she could see that he carried it around in his shirt pocket (in one of those old-fashioned pocket protectors) for almost two weeks. Celebrate those you love, admire and/or respect with A Gift from the Heart. This is a simple way to offer encouragement and praise to those who enrich your life. Equally important, it’s a way to demonstrate your unconditional love for another. This heartfelt gift will lift up their spirit and raise their confidence level. Your note will remind them of the good times you’ve shared and the love, respect and appreciation you have for them.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Dr. Janine H. Burns, Interfaith Chaplain, Spiritual Coach, graduated from Emerson Theological Institute. She loves to perform weddings and other ceremonies. Check out her website at www.ilovetodoweddings.com

Not Quite a Perfect Storm Although not accompanied by the conditions that created superstorm Sandy, the hurricane of 1938 had devastating effects as it raced across Long Island. According to the New York Times the Long Island Express, as it has come to be called, was centered off Cape Hatteras as the sun rose on September 21,1938, but before the day ended, the center was located in the area of Lake Champlain. The speed of the storm combined with the lack of warning from the weather bureau resulted in a shocking lack of preparation. The major airlines in New York maintained service in the early hours of the storm. The Park City departed Port Jefferson for Bridgeport with six passengers and a crew of nine at 2 p.m. The ship spent a harrowing night anchored six miles off Middle Ground Light until it was towed back to Port Jefferson by the Coast Guard the following morning. Even tracking the storm was not reliable. The weather bureau in New York City reported the eye about 100 miles to the east, but the weather station on Long Island was quoted in the Times reporting “the exact center of the hurricane passed up Deer Park Avenue in Babylon at exactly 5 p. m.” Two weeks after the storm, the Long Islander printed a letter to the editor from a group of meteorologists in Cold Spring Harbor making an appeal “to any one who made a good mental, or better, written record at the time [of] useful data.” The storm had severe effects on the Northport area as it sped through. One estate in Fort Salonga alone lost 168 trees and almost all the roads in the area were blocked by fallen trees and power lines. During the height of the storm, four barges from Steers Sand and Gravel Company broke loose and swept down the harbor damaging many of the smaller boats moored there. The storm also created a tidal surge that reached a depth of three feet on Woodbine Avenue and completely disabled the Lilco plant. The sea broke through West Beach severing Sand City from Eaton’s Neck. (The breach was later filled to prevent what is now Hobart Beach from becoming an island.) Probably the most noted occurrence was the flooding of the elevated first floor of the Grout home on Asharoken Avenue. The house had been rented by Mayor La Guardia whose wife was trapped for hours on the second floor. The mayor came to her rescue with a city police escort as soon as the road was cleared. The La Guardias never summered in Asharoken again. The Long Island Express was the storm of the Twentieth Century. The effects of its speed and strength led the Long Islander of September 29, 1938 to characterize it as the “worst storm in local history.” Bob Little is a long-time resident of the Northport area who greatly enjoys delving into the community’s fascinating history and writing his column for the Northport Historical Society.

I am grateful for my masters degree in Physical Therapy and my Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification. Both were a lot of work, time, dedication and money but so worth it. Why? Because I am confident that I can help anyone design a safe and effective exercise program. I have learned that most people have some type of pain or injury or have had pain or an injury in their past. And most of these people think that they can not exercise at all or are afraid to exercise. My answer to this is “unless the doctor has told you to not do any form of exercise at all, you can exercise safely and still get amazing results of increased strength, decreased body fat, increased flexibility, etc.” And not exercising at all can increase your risk of more injuries and illness. How to you exercise safely? By learning to MODIFY your exercise program around your injuries. There are many different ways to do most exercises. And if none of the modifications are working then you can replace it with a completely different exercise that does work for you. Here is an example: a jumping jack. You can do a full jumping jack by jumping and bringing your legs apart and together and lifting your arms all the way up over your head and back down. Or you can keep it low impact without jumping and alternating moving the right leg out then the left leg out. Or you can lift your arms to shoulder height only. Or you can keep your arms at your side. Or you can do any combination of all of these. So if you are concerned about working out and exacerbating an injury, the best thing to do is to talk with your doctor. Your doctor can reassure you that you can exercise safely with the correct modifications. Certified personal trainers can help you do the exercises that are right for you. And remember that modifying an exercise doesnt mean making it easy. If modifications are done correctly it will be intense hard work that will get you to the physical goals you have set out to achieve.

The Right Home Tools For a Healthier Lifestyle Even with the best intentions, many of us who resolve to live a healthier lifestyle in 2013 will fall back into old, familiar habits much sooner than we would like. To maintain motivation and create a routine that is both sustainable and effective, it’s important to invest in the right tools for every room in your house. Kitchen - Diet is key to overall wellness, and proper nutrition will help you remain energized and motivated to make other healthy strides. Unfortunately, some think making healthy meals is too time consuming and often make less nutritious decisions in the name of convenience. But with the right tools, creating a wide variety of tasty, wholesome options is quick and simple. Your blender can help you make nutrientpacked green smoothies, steaming hot soups and other healthy treats using a variety of whole fruits or vegetables. Bathroom - That old bathroom scale won’t do you any good if it isn’t accurate. To monitor the benefits of your healthy habits and find motivation to continue to make health-conscious choices, invest in a new digital scale. Although many scales come with additional features, such as body-index calculators and memory storage of your latest weigh-ins, consistent readings are the most important way to follow your progress. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a new tracking tool as long as your new scale is easy to read and operate, and gets high marks for accuracy.

nutrition

Bedroom - Sleep is crucial to living well, and making sure your body is well rested will help every other aspect of your healthy efforts. Having a supportive but comfortable mattress and pillow will do more than you may think to help your body get the renewing rest it needs. If you wake up with aches and pains, can feel coils and see depressions in the surface or have had your current mattress for more than 10 years, you likely need to purchase a new one. There are many types of mattresses to choose from, including innerspring, foam, no-flip and pillowtop selections. After researching your options, go to a store to test mattresses before purchasing to ensure you are getting exactly what you want. Closet - Exercise is important to a healthy lifestyle, and the right shoes are essential to any fitness routine. Whether you take an aerobics class, run, bicycle or play a competitive sport, proper athletic shoes will provide the support and protection you need. The wrong type or improperly fitting shoes can cause serious discomfort and even injury, making this a vital component of your fitness plan. Not all athletic shoes offer the same benefits, so don’t purchase walking shoes to also act as running shoes, basketball shoes or for any other physical activity use. Armed with the right tools, you can reach your health goals and reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle throughout the year, and beyond

Protecting wildlife - Organic farms are havens for wildlife and provide homes for bees, birds and butterflies. In fact, the UK Government’s own advisors found that plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms. 5. GM-free - Genetically modified crops and ingredients are banned under organic standards. You may be surprised to know that over a million tonnes of GM crops are imported each year to feed non-organic livestock which produce pork, bacon, milk, cheese and other dairy products. Dogged by pricey pet care? Cost-cutting tips for pet owners These days, everyone is searching for ways to save money and stretch budgets. Consumer experts advise people to sniff out deeper discounts, saving opportunities and additional ways to cut costs. For pet owners, it can feel challenging to cut costs without compromising on care. Being vigilant is key, according to pet expert, Charlotte Reed. “Clip coupons, use store circulars and ask for discounts like family and friend’s rewards, and multiple pet or store loyalty programs,” says Reed. “Constantly challenge yourself to find ways to save money when it comes to pets. I do it every day!” To get started, Reed suggests using these five tips. Before you know it, you’ll be seeing savings on everything your four-legged friend needs.

pets

in on the auto-ship option. In most cases, consumers not only get the discount prices of online purchasing, but they frequently get additional discounts which can more than make up for shipping cost. 4. Pet insurance can help you save in the long run - Americans spent $50.96 billion on pets in 2011, and $13.41 billion of that was on vet care, according to the American Pet Products Association. In recent years, treatments once reserved for humans, from radiation therapy to kidney transplants, are now available for pets. That means once-fatal conditions are now treatable, but often at high cost. For pet owners willing to spend the money to treat their pet, insurance can be a viable option. Carefully reviewing deductibles and monthly payments will ensure insurance can fit into your budget, ultimately helping to defray costs in the event of an emergency. 5. DIY can keep money in your wallet - Bathing and grooming at home can help save money, as opposed to going to a dog wash or paying a groomer. For additional savings, protect your pet’s health by cleaning his ears, brushing his teeth and clipping his nails. Ask your veterinarian or a vet tech to teach you how to maintain your pet’s health with these preventive measures. When your pet is a member of the family, you want to give him the best care possible. These ideas and others about affordable pet care can be found using resources like APAW; they’ll help you treat your pet right - without breaking the family budget.

1. A membership that pays - You might think of AAA as being strictly for roadside assistance. Think again - pet owners can enjoy additional discounts, which most people never take advantage of. For example, pet-owning members can shop in-store or online and receive discounts with pet manufacturers and national pet retailers. 2. Investigate discount pet medications - The Advocacy for Pets and Affordable Wellness (APAW) raises awareness among pet owners about significant cost savings they can enjoy simply by asking their vet for a prescription, and purchasing that medication from their local retail pharmacy. Just be sure to confirm the retailer’s pet pharmacy program before dropping off your pet’s prescription. In addition, pet owners can purchase vet-grade, over-the-counter, generic medications, such as flea and tick treatment, for a fraction of the cost of the brand name at pharmacies such as Walmart, Sam’s Club or Costco. 3. Deep discounts on pet necessities - Pet food and cat litter are two of the biggest pet expenses for dog and cat owners. If you purchase these products online from larger online retailers, cash

Let March Bring the Winds of Change Around the Outside of Your Home Did you ever notice that when you paint a room of your home in a different color scheme, as opposed to just freshening up the room with a new paint job, your attitude about that living space changes as well — usually for the better? With spring upon us, a great recipe to make those dreaded spring outdoor chores more palatable is to add the flavor of a little eye candy to your plate. In addition to simple pride of ownership, this is particularly important when we talk “curb appeal” and increasing value when selling your home. Take into consideration that first impressions can add up to lasting and sustainable benefits. For example, past surveys have shown that buyers value a well-landscaped home as much as 11.3% higher than its base price. In a recent Gallup research project, home-buyers also revealed that they think landscaping adds 14.87% to a home’s selling price. And real estate agents agree. Of the members of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, 95% concur that landscaping adds to the dollar value of real estate. Hardscaping Provides A Multipurpose Plan Of Action Whether you are selling or staying, consider hardscaping in your plan. Like home improvement products in general, hardscape products have also come a long way -- reaching far beyond the parameters of interlocking concrete pavements and manufactured wall systems. Cast stone products such as staircases, stair treads, stepping stones, columns, column caps and column mailboxes, veneer stone, water features, and a host of outdoor living room components such as outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, open air kitchens, grill islands, pizza ovens have been added to the category. Putting plain old beauty and increased appraised home value aside, the choice to go with hardscaping products is often a

solutions-based decision. For example, products like a permeable pavement can help manage storm water runoff on properties with high water tables. A heating system installed beneath a maintenance-free driveway of interlocking concrete pavers will eliminate customary winter care such as snow removal and the need for deicing salts. Building a retaining wall made of manufactured wall units can make good sense when dealing with a sloped front or backyard. Cast stone wall caps, steps and stepping-stones are just a few examples of how other hardscape materials can save money when compared to natural stone such as bluestone. If you are thinking about re-facing part of your home’s façade or facing a column, custom outdoor kitchen or refreshment bar, consider manufactured veneer stones. It’s also easy to design straight, curved or serpentine walls, a raised patio or a tree ring using manufactured wallstones that utilize advanced laser technology for professionalgrade fit, enabling you to achieve optimal results in hundreds of style and pattern designs. My suggestion is to observe similar applications of hardscape products in your neighborhood and talk to friends and relatives who have undertaken projects comparable to yours. Find out what brands they used. Ask about how their contractor handled the project. See how the products chosen are holding up. You are about to make a substantial investment in you home, don’t settle for second best. Choose a brand that you know and trust. Engage the services of professional designers and installers whose reputations you have checked. Creativity is in the air and with hardscape products there to offer a fresh breeze of beauty, sustainability and convenience, you can reap the rewards for many seasons to follow.

Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

Snowmobile Safety Tips Be a defensive driver. Always be alert of potential danger. Your helmet and engine noise can impair your hearing. Visibility is also reduced in conditions of snowfall, blowing snow and night driving. Never assume what another snowmobiler will do. Do all that you can to ensure your safety and that of other riders. Expect the unexpected! Watch out for: Thin ice and open water, grooming equipment, oncoming snowmobiles, unforeseen obstacles beneath snow, unexpected corners, intersections and stops, road and railway crossings, logging/forestry operations, snow banks and drifting snow, trees and branches on the trail, bridges and approaches, wildlife and domestic animals, other trail users (skiers, hikers) Don't Drink and Ride: Snowmobiling requires alertness, caution, and attention. Your reaction time and ability to control your sled can be drastically affected after consuming even small amounts of alcohol. Alcohol can affect perception, reaction time, and response to unexpected situations. Ice Riding: Drowning is one of the leading causes of snowmobile fatalities. Wherever possible, avoid riding on frozen lakes and rivers because ice

conditions are never guaranteed. Ice conditions can change in a period of several hours. If you must cross ice, stay on the packed or marked trail. Don't stop until you reach shore. If you hit slush, don't let off the throttle. If you are following someone who hits slush, veer off to make your own path. If you must travel over lakes and rivers then consider using a buoyant snowmobile suit which will help you reach the closest ice surface. Also consider carrying a set of picks that will help you grip the edge of the ice more easily. As a rule of thumb, "If you don't know, don't go." If you do break through the ice, don't panic. Follow these self-rescue tips: Kick vigorously into a horizontal position and swim to the nearest ice edge. Place hands/arms on unbroken ice while kicking hard to propel your body onto the ice, like a seal. Once clear, stay flat and roll away to stronger ice. Stand, keep moving and find shelter fast. Basic repair kits are essential: The kit should contain: spare belt, spare spark plugs, manufacturer's tool kit, extra wrenches nuts & bolts sized for your sled, tow rope, pry bar, duct tape, wire jackknife, a cellular phone can be a terrific asset if trouble arises, but bear in mind that cell phones have limited service range.

A Wonderful Way To Say “I Love You” In case you think this column is a throwback to some 1950’s preThe people we love know how we feel, of course. Right? Flowers and candy are highly recommended and much appreciated, feminist mindset, rest assured that this was only an example. Any but there’s another special way we can show those we love how much we observant adult can look around and see ways some small shortcoming care. Think about the places around your home that seem to fall short of a home’s design or organization is causing frustration to a family of your loved one’s expectations. I’m not talking about your teenage member. Looking at teen catalogs and websites will help you to figure out the best way to do this for your space, budget disappointments in your home to each of your family members. The old saying goes “Treat your guests like family, and your family and your daughter’s (and your) taste. Guests should be treated with the warmth and affection you feel for and show your family members. digging to find out the things they like best. real estate • marilyn urso

A Picture is Worth a Lot More than 1000 Words We’ve all heard the old saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” In Real Estate it could mean the difference between a home sitting on the market for 6 months to a year or selling in 3 months or less. Over 90% of today’s home buyers start their home search on the Internet. The first photo they see of your home can make the difference between clicking through for more information or just moving on to the next listing. And we all know how fast the young buyers click that mouse button or tap that screen for everything they do on their computers, iPads and other mobile devices! If you are considering selling your home this year, part of your REALTOR interview should include questions about internet marketing and photography. Marketing your property is one of the most important jobs your REALTOR has from the pictures to the copy that goes along with them. You should ask to see samples of their listing photos and pay special attention to the property description they write. Are there any special features that should be highlighted in the copy and photos of your home? For the very important first photo, perhaps a shot of the back is more enticing or that very expensive gourmet kitchen with the granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances might draw the most attention. For some larger properties an aerial or boom shot might be the most enticing and evening photos with special outdoor lighting can also catch the consumer’s attention. What good are these great features if they are not photographed professionally and written up well in the descriptions?

Yes, the agent might tell you that iPhones and iPads take good pictures, but to truly showcase your home, you need the eye of a professional photographer. After all, you’re going to spend a lot

of your time, effort and possibly money to stage your home to perfection; shouldn’t your agent make sure that the photographs are perfection too? The ‘1000 words’ are also important to attract potential buyers to your home. Some of the ‘buzz words’ that today’s thirty-something buyers look for include mention of Hardwood Floors, Granite & Stainless for the kitchen, Open Floorplans and Entertaining areas. Hi-Hat Lighting and Ceiling Fans are very desirable features too. You should also make sure your agent includes information on any energy efficient features your home may have; new heating or central air conditioning units are always a plus as are energy-star appliances. So if you’re getting ready to sell, start making that list of special features you want highlighted. Start thinking about how you will stage your home to attract more buyers. Check out http://www.mlsli.com and look at available homes in your area that are going to be your ‘competition’ and look at all the photos. Would you click through to find out more about that home? Which agent has the best photos and descriptions online? That’s the one you want to interview. Oh, and by the way, if you are planning to sell, do it now! Inventories are very low in many of our North Shore communities and there are lots of qualified buyers ready to purchase their dream! Good Luck and don’t forget to smile for the camera!

car of the month

Shelby GT500

Ford has recently released a high horsepower, supercharged V-8 muscle car with the new Shelby GT500. You might think 500 means 500 horsepower, nope. The 2013 Shelby GT500 has more horsepower than a Camaro ZL-1 and a Corvette ZR-1. Yup the Ford Shelby GT500 has as much as 662 hp. This allows the car to surpass 200 MPH, the highest ever for a muscle car. Along with its speed, the six-speed manual transmission is responsible for getting the Mustang to show its acceleration by going from zero to 60 in less than four seconds. That alone would be enough to make the 2013 Shelby GT500 the best muscle car for 2013.

village connection •february 2013 • 41

Much of the Shelby GT500 has been updated and improved from the 2012 version. For starters, Ford has upgraded from a 5.4-liter aluminum-block V-8 to 5.8 liters. The powertrain crew also updated the heads for better cooling, changed the camshaft profiles, added piston squirters and higher-flow fuel injectors. They have even swapped out the old superchager for a larger and more proficient TVS unit that helps go from 9 to 15 psi. All these updates help add an extra 100 hp and 90 lb-ft of torque, totaling it over 630 lb-ft. In order to help deal with all this new power, the cooling system was upgraded along with a carbon-fiber driveshaft, upgraded clutch, stronger transmission and sturdier rear axle. To top it all off the driver gets an adjustable launch-control function. Well the car also has a low base price of $54,000 which is a lot of bang for your buck to a lot of muscle car lovers. But the 2013 Shelby GT500 is not all engine. The car sports a wonderful interior with great Recaro seats, updated exterior parts, and gets 24 MPG on the highway. This means that this car has more horsepower and better gas mileage than its other muscle car competitors. The best muscle car for 2013 can also be considered the best convertible since Ford makes the Shelby GT500 with a drop top.

What the Heck is the Paper Bag? The Paper Bag is the World's Longest Running (and probably only) 70 piece rock band. The Paper Bag began as a song played by the Phil Gagliano Band in a basement in Hempstead, NY in 1973. The Bag band has performed annually in Long Island clubs since 1979 and will continue to perform until either the band or the audience stops showing up. The musicians average over 15 years in the Bag. The Executive Board averages over 25 years. Most of the audience members too, have participated for many years. We play rock n' roll, the way it should be played. The 70 piece band plays from 10 pm until 4 am, nonstop. We perform over 45 songs each year. It is not surprising that Ed Lowe, esteemed "himself", being a paragraph manufactuerer by trade, provided us with the most succinct description of the Paper Bag. It is reprinted here for your convienence without any permission from Newsday. "'The Bag' amounts to this: 65 accomplished Long Island rock and rollers take the stage and expertly perform virtually unrehearsed music nonstop for six hours in front of roughly 1,400 wildly enthusiastic recidivist fans, who pay to cover the cost of renting the hall, providing beer and hamburgers for the musicians, videotaping the event and maintaining high-

quality sound at killer decibel level." During 35 annual performances we have played over 1,450 songs, relying heavily on the Allman Bros, The Beatles, Cream, Creedence, CSNY, Hendrix, James Brown, Jeff Beck, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Little Feat, Pink Floyd, the Rascals, Santana, Sly & the Family Stone, Springsteen,Temptations, Talking Heads, Traffic, War, the Who, and Frank Zappa. The musicians that play the Bag are professionals who have worked the Long Island and NYC scene for decades. This show is unique on the planet. You should come experience it.

The Whole World Has Gone Digital: Even Your Favorite Music Over the past few years digital music has become the main stream of the audio world. What an easier way to store and access all your music. It’s either a phone, iPOD, iPAD, your home or work computer, the choice is how to hear it and how to hear it at its best quality. Although the modern music studios record tracks and songs digitally, when you store them on your laptop, in a file or on a mobile device you “Compress it”. By taking the music and “shrinking it” in size to fit your device you will make room for plenty of your favorite tunes but it also degrades the sound. Now it’s true you won’t hear the difference when you’re on the treadmill or trying to drown out the masses on the train to work every morning but how can you regain that quality when you’re at home listening through your home sound system? Well introducing the DAC! The Digital-to-Analog Converter or DAC for short, reconverts those files or songs back into a form your sound system can play and how good it works depends on how good the DAC is. Now not all DACs are created equal. The majority of the ones we use every day are made to be affordable. Yes- you own a few you don’t even know about. Every iPOD, phone and computer has one inside. But when you plug it into your home system the music just doesn’t sound as good anymore.

With a high-quality DAC, it is possible to hear a natural and crystal-clear reproduction from a digital signal. With a budget DAC, you will most likely not be able to hear as deeply into the music. With the introduction of Higher quality iPOD docks and stand alone DAC’s, from companies like TEAC, Marantz, Esoteric and many more have a DAC to satisfy every price point that you can add into your already existing home sound system. Just think back to when you traded up from a standarddefinition to a high-definition TV; the same experience is possible for your ears by investing in a quality DAC. Stop in Today to our new showroom in the heart of Huntington Village, even bring your favorite sound music and get ready to experience music like you haven’t in years. Let our staff show you, educate you and explain how your digital music can come alive again with our large selection, high quality and even cost effective DAC’s!

Despite their name, horseshoe crabs are actually arthropods and therefore more closely related to spiders and scorpions. In this piece, Celeste gives full sway to her imagination, bestowing magical coloration on these normally drab, beady-eyed creatures. “’Under See’ is my artist’s vision as to how beautiful horseshoe crabs might appear when seen in their aquatic environment,” she indicated. Celeste is ushering in the New Year with a solo exhibit of 35 pieces, predominantly collages, at the Bryant Library, 2 Paper Mill Road, Roslyn, which runs through February. Celeste is also a Firefly Artist and her work is on display at their gallery located inside LaMantia Gallery, 127 Main St. Northport Village. Kaleidoscope of Color: Al Feliciano W

hether his subject matter is the Huntington’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a sports or music extravaganza, a head shot or saucy pin-up, Al Feliciano’s images resonate with his signature flamboyant and fabulous saturated color. The musician and former longtime Huntington resident, who now resides in Lindenhurst, said that his interest in photography peaked about a year and a half ago. Al concentrates on images which grab the imagination with their composition while are recognizably “Long Island.” Al also likes to ‘pump up the volume’ of his photographs with color software, imparting the degree of saturation that makes them both “painterly” and visually intoxicating. Viewers will note that Al often thinks out of the box while on the prowl for worthy subjects. One day when he returned home from work, he noticed that the window of his front door was projecting a remarkably beautiful prism of light. “I always have flowers for my fiancée, Jessica,” said Al who took advantage of this gift of serendipity and moved a white daisy into the prism’s path, using his reflector cover as the background. “I played around with it until I got what I liked,” Al said of the resulting image of a daisy seemingly basking in a rainbow. “If you slow down and look around, you can find the most amazing things.” In another series of photographs, Al pays homage to the spectacular and breathtaking light show that takes place at sundown at Northport Village Harbor. Al is available to photograph all kinds of happenings, including sports and musical events, weddings, and christenings. He also specializes in portraiture and head shots. For The Love Of Chocolate Chocolate, which originated in Latin America, has an allure that dates back thousands of years. Made from cacao beans, which grow in pods on trees, chocolate was considered the nectar of the gods by ancient people such as the Aztecs who used it in their religious ceremonies. Chocolate, which is actually a fruit, has long been praised for its mood-boosting properties and as an aphrodisiac. For the last three years, Northport resident Roxanne Browning, founder of Exotic Chocolate Tasting (exoticchocolatetasting.com), has been educating the public about the delights of handcrafted, artisanal chocolate. Such chocolate resonates with flavor because, unlike commercial chocolate with which most of us are familiar, it contains a high proportion of cacao gleaned from highly prized heirloom beans indigenous to Ecuador, Venezuela, and Madagascar. “It’s ‘chocolate with a conscience,’” said Roxanne, who makes it a priority to showcase beanto-bar chocolate derived from organic beans certified as “direct trade” or “farmer-owned,” meaning that the farmers who grow the beans are paid ten times more than fair trade value for

their product. In the summer of 2011, Roxanne embarked on an unforgettable journey when she traveled to Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, lived with a family in their small thatched roof hut, and experienced cacao harvesting firsthand. “They are entrepreneurs of the jungle,” Roxanne said of the farmers whose labor of love in cultivating and harvesting the cacao pods. Their precious contents results in chocolate whose unique flavor profile varies according to the environmental conditions of its origin. It is precisely these unique flavor profiles which make chocolate an excellent candidate for pairing with wine. Through a process of sampling and comparison, Roxanne arrives at a sumptuous duet, whereby the chosen chocolate enhances the flavor and nuances of the wine, and vice versa. In homage to the most romantic month of the year, Roxanne will be hosting two events which celebrate love of chocolate. On Tuesday, February 12, Roxanne and Master Chef Tom Schaudel will be dishing up something extraordinary at his stunning and aptly named Melville restaurant, Jewel. As a prelude to Valentine’s Day, the adventurous duo have collaborated to create a chocolate-themed five course dinner. Guests will savor unique dishes infused with chocolate specially created by Chef Schaudel, and will enjoy chocolate and wine pairings between courses. The pairings that guests will experience as part of this romantic evening include a white chocolate of Philippian origin which will be sampled with a Pinot Grigio, and a sparkling Rosé will be enjoyed with Gianduja (hazelnut) 32% cacao milk chocolate from Tuscany. “All the wines are from Banfi, a Long Island-based importer with a vineyard in Tuscany,” Roxanne indicated. For details and to make reservations, call (631) 755-5777. On Sunday, February 17, Roxanne will be co-hosting a chocolate and wine tasting in Northport with Lindsay Ostrander of The Wine Cellar on Main. “Guests will be sampling a Spanish white wine paired with a 70% cacao chocolate infused with peaches and apricots,” said Roxanne, adding that the beans are of Venezuelan origin and the chocolate is handcrafted in Tuscany. Attendees will also experience the taste sensation of an Oregon Pinot Noir paired with a 60% cacao chocolate from Grenada among other pairings. For reservations, call (631) 651-5555. t s e F y d e m o C I L @ I was born in Brooklyn. But my parents wanted me to grow up in an area less congested, so we moved… to Queens. My friend moved from the city to Long Island with his dog named ‘Taxi’. Now he’s on his lawn in Huntington screaming Taxi! Taxi! I’m his only friend. I’ve been using the self check-out at my grocery store. I don’t like to brag, but I must be pretty good, because they offered me a job. I start next week. What is the ultimate goal of all the new technology? Do people NEVER want to leave their homes?

I went to a winery, they had a ‘tasting’ room. Can’t we just call it what it is... a bar! I didn’t see a lot of tasting going on, but I saw a lot of drinking. I love rock and roll! It’s just Joan Jett’s music I can’t stand any more. GEICO should advertise more. Why does everyone in a workout infomercial look so happy? I go to my gym and everyone looks miserable.

A Movie Milestone is Born in Oyster Bay Think of the biggest screen TV. Now think of a screen a hundred times bigger! That screen is called Cinerama. Starting in the 1950’s, major Hollywood movies such as How The West Was Won, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and 2001: A Space Odyssey were filmed in a larger than usual film format that projected a gigantic image that wrapped around the front of very large movie theatres. If you were lucky enough to see a movie in Cinerama, you were truly engulfed in the movie. The fore-runner of modern day IMAX screens, Cinerama had its start right around the block in Oyster Bay. Cinerama actually has it’s origins in the silent era. For his 1927 film Napoleon, French director Abel Gance used a technique called “Vitarama” where scenes were filmed with three cameras lined up next to one another to give a seamless panorama view (which had to be projected with three perfectly lined up film projectors.) Fred Waller, who worked at the Special Effects Department at Paramount Studios enhanced the Vitarama process and was displaying panoramic films at The New York Worlds Fair of 1939. During World War II, Waller used this wrap-around-walls projector process to create a virtual simulation of air battle for American pilots heading overseas for battle. This bigger-than-big screen training process has been credited with saving the lives of over 200,000 Allied soldiers. After the war, Waller settled in Oyster Bay, and it was there he worked out all the kinks

of this film-viewing process and created Cinerama. With the help of Merian C. Cooper, the man who gave us King Kong, Waller completed a 116-minute long demo-reel of various Cinerama Images and called it This Is Cinerama. During Cinerama’s birth in the early 1950's, Hollywood top brass sent reps out to Oyster Bay to check out Waller’s invention. Just about everybody passed on this elaborate film process, which would have meant you would have to use special projection lenses and re-design theatres projection systems. This Is Cinerama proved an enormous success, but it wouldn’t be another decade until Hollywood began turning out feature films in Cinerama. One of the first major films produced in Cinerama was Stanley Kramer’s larger than life It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. When the film premiered in October 1963, Kramer himself came out to the Syosset Theatre to inspect the projection process which required three projector booths! In later years, the Syosset Theatre was the place in the area to see large scale movies. Stanley Kubrick used the Cinerama process to film “The Ultimate Trip” that was 2001: A Space Odyssey. As Hollywood began to shy away from the grand epics in the 1970’s, we began seeing less and less of Cinerama. Many theatres still revive the old Cinerama films for festivals. Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theatre was recently host to many Cinerama and 70mm classics. By the way, the word “Cinerama” is an anagram for “America”
