Art Exhibition at Morris County Library

hroughout the month of July, Morris county artist Lorraine Robertson’s works in oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor will be on display at the Morris County Library. Robertson, an award winner in a variety of state- and nation-wide juried exhibitions, has studied at the Woodstock School of Art, The Southern Atelier of Fine Art and privately with locally and nationally renowned artists. Pieces from her collection, which include figures, still lifes, seascapes, cityscapes and landscapes are displayed in offices and in private collections. “I see beauty everywhere and want to capture it on canvas,” Robertson says of her exhibition. “The best part is sharing my excitement and enthusiasm for that beauty with those who view my art.” Robertson’s collection can be viewed in the main downstairs gallery at the Morris County Library, located at 30 East Hanover Road in Whippany, during normal library hours, Monday-Friday 9am-9pm and Saturday 9am-5pm. Cocktails, Celebration and Inspiration

Maplewoodstock – 10 Groovy Years

ounded in 2004, Maplewoodstock, the event once described as a “lazy afternoon jam in the park,” has steadily grown into a bona fide musical event. Now in its tenth year, Maplewoodstock will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2013, and Sunday, July 15, 2013, in Maplewood’s Memorial Park. Twenty-two bands are scheduled to perform, and famed singer-songwriter Joan Osborne will close the festival with her unique mix of blues, R&B and soul. A far cry from the casual neighborhood afternoon it once was, Maplewoodstock has grown into a true music festival— boasting fifty-plus art vendors peddling their crafts, as well as food stands, an area for children, a beer garden and official merchandise. “Maplewoodstock has become a local summer tradition, as families, friends and neighbors bring out blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets for a wonderful weekend of music, art, food and the best of the Maplewood community,” event chairperson Gary Shippy says. What’s more, the concerts—including performances spanning rock, reggae, R&B and more, are entirely free. n May 9, 2013, The American Yoga Academy hosted the Celebration of Life Cocktail Party. More than 250 people attended the event, held in The Loft at The Wilshire Grand Hotel. The evening included cocktails, celebration and inspiration. Prizes, including a certificate for Full Teacher Training Tuition at The American Yoga Academy and a certificate for Seduction of Spirit at The Chopra Center for Wellbeing in California, were awarded at the conclusion of the event. “When my sister, Madeleine Diab, a 25year cancer survivor, passed away in December, I was determined to organize an event in her honor that would benefit others with cancer,” Diab said. “100% of the proceeds went to Kula for Karma, an organization that certifies yoga teachers to cancer patients, wounded veterans, and victims of domestic violence.” Including a dollar-for-dollar match from Pfizer, the event raised a total of $6,478 for the charity. The American Yoga Academy is located within The Wilshire Grand Hotel at 350 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. Historic Home Receives a Sustainable Renovation

ummit’s historic Twin Maples house received a major renovation, making the neo-classic renovation more ecologically sustainable— just in time for its 100th birthday. As part of the home’s $300,000 renovation—which included the replacement of doors, windows, façade and other repairs to the property—the decision was made to install an innovative geothermal system to heat and cool the house. In addition, the home, which is on both the National and New Jersey Registries of Historic Places, had environmentally friendly fabrics, wall coverings, flooring

options, furniture and accessories incorporated into the design, as well as the installation of energy-use-conscious appliances. Once a private residence, the 6,500-square-foot mansion is now home to The Fortnightly Club of Summit, as well as other area organizations, and often plays host to many private events throughout the year. 10 Years of Good, Old-Fashioned Fun

he Toy Professor is celebrating its 10th anniversary on July 23. Owner Geoff Stern, a Summit resident, states “I opened the store in 2003 with a vision of creating an old-fashioned neighborhood store that would become a part of the community. With fun and unique toys, exceptional customer service and community support through many donations every year, I think we have succeeded.” Stern believes in this day of impersonal stores and online shopping, it is more important than ever to support local stores to sustain our communities. “Over the last 10 years I have watched a generation of children grow up with us,” he says. “I want to thank my staff for their hard work and especially for fostering a personal connection with our customers. ome folks go to great lengths to find the perfect cup of coffee. But at The Wine List of Summit, owner Ivan Ruiz has done all the work for you. After auditioning dozens of manufacturers, he’s proud to offer 28 different types of coffee beans, including artisanal selections from Lambertville’s own Rojo’s Roastery and from famed Iron Chef José Garces in the shop’s new European-style café area. While The Wine List still reigns as the top destination for wine aficionados from throughout the metropolitan area, Ruiz continues to expand its product lines and services. “We opened up a little area in the front of the store to cater to the weekday The Wine List's café lunchtime crowd, selling soups, salads and sandexplains Ruiz, who explains that adding proudly owns the wiches,” coffees to the mix has brought an influx of new commercial-grade customers. Now, customers can buy whole or coffee beans by the pound for their home Clover® machine, which ground coffee machines, or whip up the perfect cup of coffee, latte or cappuccino in-house. After being on a waiting list for two years, the Wine List’s café now proudly owns the commercialgrade Clover® machine, which “makes the perfect cup of coffee,” Ruiz claims, and allows customers to choose their own roast. Adding a line of teas. “We’ve interviewed 20 companies so far— everyone says they’re the best, but we want to make sure!” says Ruiz. “When we’re satisfied, we plan to have about 20 to 30 different types of teas in the store.” But for now, the coffee business is booming. To complement the perfect cup of coffee, Ruiz offers sweets from Kiki’s Confections, such as French macarons and fruit tarts. Lunchtime specials (including soups, salads and sandwiches), gourmet products like Paolo’s Kitchen frozen meals, and specialty cheeses and meats draw customers in to the store, which Ruiz calls “one of the best-looking wine shops in the country.”

In the fall, Ruiz is once again spearheading the annual Summit Wine & Food Festival, now in its fifth year. As in years past, Ruiz plans to have a number of tasting events and competitions the weekend of Sept. 20-22, including the return of the sommelier tasting and a five-course dinner program, with a barista competition on tap as a new event. He expects nearly 35 renowned chefs to participate in the festival, which takes place at the Grand Summit Hotel, The Wine List and the Twin Maples house. SUMMER SAFETY How to Be Wise While Outside Prepping and Participating • Stretch before engaging in physical activity, to both warm up your muscles and increase your flexibility. Find a flat, clutterfree surface, then breathe normally and keep steady. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds without bouncing and overextending your range of motion, and then repeat the series. • Wear the right clothing and gear. Choose comfortable garments and don helmets, goggles, padding, gloves and wrist guards as appropriate. And protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun with a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. • Check your equipment to ensure it’s in good working order before using. Also, know how to repair your equipment, whether it’s a bike tire or floatation device, and bring a repair kit along with you. • Educate yourself by taking a professional lesson, particularly if you’re new to the pursuit. If you’re hiking to high-altitude areas, make sure to learn how to acclimate. • Pay attention to the weather before, as well as during, your activity. Heed reports about such adverse conditions as temperature changes and stay aware of any changes in temperature and the like while you’re out and about. • Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Just pace yourself so that you don’t exhaust your supply at the outset. You might want to pack such healthy snacks as, such as fruit and granola bars, too. • Know basic first aid, especially for heat-related illnesses. Carry a well-stocked first-aid kit (see sidebar), and an emergency signaling device and whistle if you’ll be in isolated spots. Also, locate the nearest ranger station before you head out.

The old joke goes says that to get to Carnegie Hall, you need to practice, practice, practice. To stay safe outdoors during the summer months, you need to prepare, prepare, prepare! By planning prudently and taking the necessary precautions once you’re out, you can help prevent injuries from occurring while you’re playing, hiking, biking and more. 40

• Go with at least one buddy and chart a plan for possible emergencies. And inform someone back home of your itinerary, apprising them of when you’ll return. • Stick to marked areas, avoiding those that are closed to the public, whether in water or on land. When hiking or biking, be careful on rocky, uneven terrain and near trees and bushes that may block your view. • Build in frequent rest stops to recover and rejuvenate. Reconsider going at all or turning back if you’re feeling achy or drowsy.

Bugged by Bugs There’s no getting around it: Summertime means more bugs, and many of them, including mosquitoes and ticks, can transmit disease and infection. To help keep insects at bay, steer clear of infested areas like high grass, stay inside from dusk to dawn if possible, and apply repellant as directed. Look for products with 20% DEET, the primary ingredient in most repellants. You also can treat your clothes with permethrin, a common synthetic insecticide. When it comes to ticks, check yourself over yourself as soon as you’ve finished your activity. If you find a tick, grab a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to carefully remove it. Should you subsequently experience body ache, rash, fever and/or other symptoms, consult with your physician. Once home, shower and wash and dry your clothes promptly.

study published in The Journal of Obesity observed the effects that moderate-intensity exercise had on participants’ appetites. on the first day of the study, participants were broken up into two groups. one group ran for 60 minutes and the other group walked for 60 minutes, while researchers monitored how much energy each participant was expending, and drew blood to check for changes in appetite-affecting hormones. on the second day of the study, all participants rested for 60 minutes. on both days—after the hour of exercise or rest—researchers monitored how many calories the participants consumed after they were given permission to eat whatever they wanted from a variety of food. The result? Participants were the hungriest after the hour of rest, consuming nearly 300 more calories than they had burned; walkers were hungry, but consumed around 50 calories more than they burned; and runners weren’t very hungry, and on average consumed 200 calories less than they had burned.
