Earlier in the day we had left the southeast end of Santa Cruz Island, kayaking toward East Anacapa Island and the lighthouse towering over the iconic 40-foot-tall rock arch, the symbol of the Channel Islands National Park that is 11 miles off the coast of Oxnard. The northwest winds hadn’t reached extremes just yet, and with the wind at our backs we had no problem making good time to the second-smallest isle off the mainland.

Before it got dark we made a wind barrier with our kayaks, and twice in the night the wind picked up the kayaks and blew them to the edge of the water like flimsy pieces of cardboard. As the lighthouse flashed in the night, we recovered our kayaks and wedged rocks against them to hold them the rest of the night. It was so windy that even weather-beaten California brown pelicans were seeking shelter within our kayak barrier, waddling by us to stick their heads in the bushes behind us.

We paddled beneath the natural archway and then paddled northeast for the mainland. We kayaked in a tight formation, aiming between oil platforms Gail and Gina at the east end of the Santa Barbara Channel. Our final destination would be the Port Hueneme Lighthouse built in 1941. The 11-mile channel crossing is the shortest distance between the Channel Islands and the mainland.

As we approached the oil platforms, a small pod of common dolphins joined our little Ad Proof flotilla of kayaks. CLOSE TO NATURE

CLOSE TO HOME

The county’s great outdoors are amazing, abundant and accessible BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER

rom the Los Padres National Forest to Channel Islands National Park, Ventura County is home to a wide variety of biomes and microclimates that support a diverse collection of flora and fauna. There are endless opportunities to get close to nature here — without even leaving the city limits! Here are some of the best and easiest ways to explore the great outdoors.

BIRDER’S BLISS

Over 400 bird species flock to Ventura County, and there are numerous places to see them. Close to Ojai at Wheeler’s Gorge Campground, bird watchers should be able to spot orioles, woodpeckers, Steller’s jays and, if you’re really lucky, the rare dipper or golden-crowned kinglet. In Santa Paula’s Steckel Park, you can see woodpeckers, raptors, western scrub jays and vireos. Ormond Beach in Port Hueneme is prized for its coastal dune and marsh communities where endangered California least terns and western snowy plovers nest. Estuaries created where the Santa Clara (McGrath State Beach) and Ventura (Emma Wood State Beach) Rivers meet the Pacific Ocean boast a wonderful variety of shorebirds. Be sure to keep dogs on leash at beachside communities; wandering pooches can damage fragile bird habitat. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

MOUNTAIN MAJESTY

Local foothills boast miles of trails waiting to be explored. The Pratt Trail, readily accessible from the north end of Signal Street in downtown Ojai, hits several sweet spots for nature lovers: shady oaks, abundant chaparral, wildflowers in the spring and spectacular views. Even better, it connects with Cozy Dell, Foothill, Nordhoff and Fox Canyon Trails, meaning opportunities for extending the hike abound. Behind Ventura City Hall on Poli Street, a one-mile hike uphill on the Ventura Botanical Gardens Demonstration Trail takes you through beautifully landscaped switchbacks that offer sweeping views of downtown Ventura and the Channel Islands. Camarillo Grove Park, a former stage coach stop, has a nice network of trails, including a gentle “lower loop,” which promises sage, oaks and volcanic rock formations, and a more demanding “upper loop” with cactus, wildflowers and scenic views of Pleasant Valley. What better way to soothe the soul than a walk on the beach? Two of the best places to leave footprints in the sand include the pristine shores and glittering waters of Oxnard Beach and scenic Surfers Point in Ventura, offering boulder fields, surfers, shorebirds and even a little history (thanks to the remains of two WWII-era cannon mounts). GETTING ARTSY Summer camps, classes countywide focus on creativity, imagination and expression BY ALEX WILSON Opportunities abound for young people to express themselves through artistic endeavors this summer. Visual arts such as painting and sculpture are the focus of numerous programs. Another encourages personal growth through music performance, journalism and video production. Ventura’s Vita Art Center at the Bell Arts Factory offers a wide variety of classes for younger kids and teenagers. They include Summer Art Camp where kids learn techniques such as drawing, painting and print making. Other classes explore ceramics, soft sculptures created through sewing, and art inspired by nature and science. CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

Vita Art Center Director Mary Perez says students of all ability levels welcomed. “We have kids who come in who love art, and that’s like easy schmeezy, because they love the whole thing from the beginning. But then we have kids coming in a little bit hesitant, thinking that they’re not that artistic, and are just not so sure. But they come out just loving the experience, so I think they’re building a great appreciation for art,” says Perez. A full listing of the offerings is available at www.vitaartcenter.com. Oxnard’s Carnegie Art Museum has several arts programs this summer, including classes where parents can join in. The Art Lab teams up kids with adults who seek inspiration from artwork on display in the museum.

CARNEGIE ART MUSEUM: Daphne works on a project at Carnegie Art Museum’s Art Lab summer program.

Curator of Education Martha Jimenez says it’s an eye opening experience as they creatively collaborate on their own masterpieces. “I think mainly it’s having a moment with their parent that they probably wouldn’t otherwise. CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

A unique opportunity for teenaged girls to become self-empowered through the exciting world of music performance unfolds at Ojai Valley School this summer. Amplify Sleep Away Camp gives girls a chance to express their creativity by forming their own rock band, or learning techniques of music journalism, photography and filmmaking. Campers are treated to lunchtime concerts by experienced traveling performers. The music serves as an inspiration to the budding musicians, and the writers get a chance to hone their interviewing skills. Photographers and filmmakers work with professional grade equipment and utilize creative lighting sources to capture exciting images. CONTINUED ON PAGE 34
