IMAGINATION RUNNING WILD Steve Axtell is a magic man. Not a magician, mind you — although he has, indeed, practiced magic as a performer. His talent lies in bringing the most wonderful, whimsical objects to life. The founder, CEO and creative director of Axtell Expressions in Ventura is known for his colorful, detailed and . . . well, expressive puppets. But don’t let their charming looks deceive you: These are not toys, but professional-quality tools of the entertainment world, used by ventriloquists, amusement parks, the movie industry and even, in some cases, psychologists. Axtell is often called “the next Jim Henson,” but while Muppets have been an influence and inspiration, his creatures are entirely his own, springing from his fertile, playful imagination — which as you’ll discover in our cover story, has extended to animatronics and artificial intelligence as well. Axtell isn’t the only creative thinker in these parts. Ex Voto Chocolates and Confections, featured in About Town, makes sweet treats that are as pleasing to the eye as to the palate. Jennifer Smith and her daughter and business partner, Sophia Smith-Grunder, have followed their intuition and artistic sensibility in crafting fine chocolates prized all across the county for their bean-to-bar freshness, gourmet flavors and extraordinary sculptural quality. Thai chili, local beers, apple cider and other uncommon ingredients show up in these bonbons

on a regular basis, and in the house-made gianduja (a chocolate hazelnut spread), any nut is fair game. An artist at heart, Smith-Grunder paints and airbrushes her chocolates in glorious colors with touches of silver and gold, making each piece absolutely distinctive — and an edible work of art. A group of optimists in Ojai dare to imagine something that, at times, seems to be impossible: respectful disagreement in the face of political upheaval and deep division. The Agora Foundation, through its Great Books Seminars, philosophical discussions and Chautauqua assemblies, aims to bring civility back to debate, and generate true discussion where people with sometimes diametrically opposed views can come together to share and learn. Executive Director Andrew Gilman talks about the mission and the method in Conversation. As we begin a new year with a new issue, Ventana Monthly salutes those who follow their hearts and chase flights of fancy: the romantics, the visionaries, the brave souls who come up with a wild idea and run with it. Ventura County is a brighter, more surprising, possibly even a more gracious and forgiving space because of those who dare to dream. On Dec. 5, the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks held its VIP reception for the exhibit Kevin Sloan: Collection of Rarities. In addition to presenting Sloan’s extraordinary, eco-conscious art, the reception also served as a grand-opening celebration for CMATO, which took the opportunity to show off its new space at The Oaks mall, where it relocated in the fall. Guests took in colorful works of surreal beauty, as well as a display of poignant prayer flags created by community members in the aftermath of the Borderline tragedy and the Woolsey Fire. Local poets (Steven Braff, Marsha de la O, and Ventura County Poet Laureate Phil Taggart) also read poems inspired by Sloan’s work. T

he Agora Foundation in Ojai is on a perhaps Quixotic mission to do that which most people today consider impossible: bring civility back to debate, no matter the issue. Through its outreach programs like the Ojai Chautauqua, the Great Books series and the use of Socratic seminars, Andrew Gilman, Agora’s executive director, and the rest of the foundation are seeking dialogue, debate and discussion in place of division and derision. Images of Sisyphus rolling the stone up hill, only to have it roll back down, do come to mind, but that’s not how Gilman sees it. Indeed, that’s not how many who come to the monthly gatherings see it. I sat down with Gilman to discuss what civility looks and feels like in the midst of loud voices in the political realm.

What is Chautauqua? It’s one of Agora’s three programs. It grew out of our Socratic methods for teachers and great books programs. It’s more about dealing with complicated issues and ideas that impact everyone. We’ve been doing it for about four years. What is the appeal of these dialogues? Why do they work? Well, for example, we just did a Socratic seminar on the first 25 books of Genesis and the goal of it, really, is to figure out what the texts are saying. That’s the goal of the seminar and it’s about 90 percent of what we do before we ever get to any discussion about it. And it turns out that’s pretty hard work and so we focus on what these texts are saying and try to get to the heart of them. That allows everyone to participate and learn about what they don’t understand or know. How did you decide to pursue these dialogues? Where does the idea come from? I went to St. John’s College for graduate school and it’s a Great Books school, so that’s where I learned how to do it and Agora grew out of that. We grew it from a Great Books seminar to a nonprofit and that began in 2006. And you also hold political discussions that don’t descend into shouting matches? Right. So for example with Chautauqua, we did a panel on the election and people were asking questions about the electoral college and why we still have it. So, we started a free series at the Ojai Library twice a month just for an hour from noon to 1 p.m. We’ve gone through the Declaration of Independence, selected Federalist Papers and we’re just finishing the amendments of the Constitution. We’ll go on for another couple of years and we’ll do the Lincoln-Douglas debates, the Dred Scott decision, Brown v. Board of Education, the Letter from Birmingham Jail. It’s a lot of fun and people like it. How do you keep it civil? Well, we all come in with opinions. But it’s 12

more like saying, “You can have a conversation about something in front of us and it doesn’t have to be personal.” If you’re having a conversation about Aristotle, for example, and you’re trying to understand what Aristotle is saying, you’re more open to listening to all sides and coming to a shared understanding. What we say is, “the teacher in the room is the author of the book.” It’s not personal, it’s about the ideas presented to us. So with issues like GMOs or fracking, you can barely have a conversation about it. So, let’s get the experts on the stage, the environmentalist, the geologist, the oil guy and the politician and let’s ask questions and the audience gets to ask questions, too. So the information is all out in the open and you’re more likely to learn. The goal is education and civil discourse? Yes, absolutely. Chautauqua came out of hearing about issues, seeing them on social media and not knowing what is true, what to believe. We noticed tension in the community around these issues, like GMOs, fracking or any of those things. So, the goal is to learn and be aware. It’s hard to have a reasoned conversation because it takes time and it takes goodwill. People have to be willing. You have some events coming up that are focused on local issues, right? Yes, we do. In early February, we’ll have a panel on fire in the Ojai Valley. After the Thomas Fire and even this year with the Woolsey and Hill fires, these are issues that the community is still dealing with. The fact is that Ojai has some very thorny and complicated problems and what we’ve done this past year is focus on local issues. We’ve done tourism in Ojai and we’ve done two different panels on water issues. We want to get everyone in the same room, discussing the same issues and using the same language. Fostering that goodwill, listening and community is going to be needed. Another issue we’re facing is Ojai’s changing population. The population is

declining in Ojai. The public schools are at about 60 percent capacity. So this is a complicated problem that involves employment, housing, qualities of the schools. And that’s the kind of problem that Chautauqua can help with and hopefully create an exportable model of community involvement and problem solving. We think we’ve got a good track record of being fair and inclusive and we have a good relationship with the city council and agencies. We’d love Ojai to become a model community as we deal with sustainability and the changing demographics. Does your experience tell you there’s hope for civil debate and solutions-oriented discussion? Person by person, in small seminars or large panels, we have seen individuals lower their tension when they honestly listen to another’s perspective. Positions may not be changed as a result, but they soften enough to understand difference and beliefs. Time and again, panelists who were representing “opposing” sides turned out to have much in common, and generally shared camaraderie. I have been reminded, and deeply moved, by the foresight and wisdom of the framers of our government, even through their public passion and debates. Our country is a remarkable experiment, one the world had never seen before, and one that the entire western world has adopted in some form. I believe this structure, which forces competing interests to reach compromise, will endure phases of intolerance and polarization, even if those phases last four or eight years. F

or Jennifer Smith, working with chocolate came to her as a calling. “Intuitively I saw the word chocolate repeatedly and I knew I needed to work with it,” said Jennifer. She is co-owner of Ex Voto Chocolates and Confections in midtown Ventura with her daughter Sophia SmithGrunder, where the pair have worked to churn out truffles, confections and other sweets since 2017. Through tireless workdays stretching 12 to 15 hours during peak season, the pair has persevered through the good times and the challenging, carried by a passion for the product. A love for food runs through the Smith family. Jennifer lived in Belgium for a while, a country renowned for its chocolate, and says that she expresses her love through food, a concept she instilled in Sophia in the kitchen. Both women attended Santa Barbara City College’s culinary program, where Jennifer received a personal chef certification, Sophia a baking and pastry certificate. Following their stint in Santa Barbara, the duo attended the San Francisco Baking Institute where they studied chocolate and confections under master chocolatier Melissa Coppel. More than just an education, Jennifer says she achieved confirmation that she was on the right path and that her chocolate making skills were up to par. In July of 2014, Jennifer and Sophia began producing chocolates together, completing their first big December order. The following year, in June, the pair began selling chocolates at the Ojai farmers market, where they began to collect regulars. In the summer of 2017, Jennifer and Sophia launched the first physical storefront for Ex Voto Chocolates and Confections, the culmination of what Jennifer says was a lot of hard work and determination. }}

With keys in hand, the pair began taking orders and were readily ramping up for the holiday season when tragedy struck. On Dec. 4, 2017, Jennifer, Sophia and family watched as flames began creeping over the mountains toward Ojai. “We could see pretty far away, and we were used to seeing the Ojai mountains. There were fires every now and then out there and we weren’t afraid when we saw the fire,” recalled Jennifer. “We just assumed that the fire department would come and put it out.” As the winds picked up and the flames shifted, edging closer to Ventura, the lights went out. The family grabbed what they could and evacuated, staying with friends for the night. The Smith house sat just above the Missionary Church in the Clearpoint neighborhood on the east side of Ventura, one of the hardest hit communities in the city during the Thomas Fire. Hundreds of homes were destroyed. The following day, a friend phoned and delivered the news: their home, too, was gone. “A lot of people have been through this; it’s a journey,” said Jennifer. “You go through a lot of feelings and experiences through the year.” The day after the fire took their home, Jennifer and Sophia returned to the store and posted about their experience on the Ex Voto Facebook page, assuring customers that they would be open. “It was chocolate month,” said Jennifer, noting that December is traditionally the busiest month for a chocolatier. Both Jennifer and Sophia said that the Ventura community came together to support them through the difficult holiday season. According to Jennifer, after a week and a half, a friend offered the family a home, where she would sleep for four hours before spending 15 hours a day in the shop making chocolates to fill orders. Without that support, Jennifer said that the store would have likely gone under. “We had customers who came in and pledged to gain ten pounds in our shop to support us and that was the sweetest thing ever. We needed the support of our community,” said Jennifer. With new customers and new friends, the duo entered 2018 with the same dedication to producing high-quality product that had propelled them through the years, and a particular motto that Sophia says her mom repeats regularly: “Fresh is best.” Jennifer says her goal with Ex Voto is to produce chocolate from bean to bar, a feat that many chocolatiers avoid due to the extended process and work involved. Choosing to make the product as fresh as possible gives her chocolates a wellrounded taste, she says. The chocolatier also evinces an infatuation with capturing unique flavors as fresh as possible as well. Take, for instance, a chocolate basic: the brandied cherry truffle. One might picture a cherry in brandy syrup coated in

chocolate. But at Ex Voto, they do things a little differently. “We make it with tart cherry juice, brandy, mala [ground cherry pit], cinnamon and pepper,” said Jennifer. “You don’t taste cinnamon or pepper; you taste a very well-rounded cherry.” The creative inspiration extends to the artistry of the chocolates as well. Sophia, resident chocolate artist, uses several techniques to get the Ex Voto signature look onto truffles and other confections. The chocolatier’s signature includes up to five colors, all applied by hand and airbrush. “That took me a long time to figure out,” said Sophia. “I do a lot of literal finger painting, and then we do the airbrush to get the solid colors on there. People always say they are surprised when they eat them and they actually taste as good as they look.” As if chocolate weren’t enough, Ex Voto recently added ice cream in a variety of unusual flavors to the menu. Offerings include the beloved honey buttered toast (one of the shop’s bestsellers) to vegan options such as a mango sticky rice concoction made with coconut milk. During the busy 2018 holiday season, Ex Voto added help via Jana Richardson, owner of Ventura’s Delicious Artistry. Richardson is a graduate of the California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena who has been making specialty cakes and desserts since 2006. She intends to use her stint at Ex Voto to learn the fine art and craft of chocolate making. A trio for now, the Ex Voto crew are in full swing ahead of the sweetheart holiday, Feb. 14, adding a new item to their gift options. This year’s Valentine’s Day special will be a heart-shaped salted caramel s’more. The Ex Voto take includes a layer of salted caramel and another of marshmallow cream made with eggs rather than gelatin, all covered in what Jennifer calls “a dark milk chocolate” — a 41 percent chocolate blend that’s darker than a traditional milk chocolate (which typically has less than 30 percent cacao), but lighter than what most of us consider dark chocolate. The hearts are painted by hand by Sophia, naturally. Also available will be champagne truffles (another top seller) made with Veuve Clicquot and a Valentine’s Day box featuring a variety of handpainted bonbons. A box of Ex Voto chocolate bonbons is a thing of beauty, each piece artfully presented in an array of colors and gleaming with a mirrored surface. They’re almost too pretty to eat, but Jennifer has sound advice for those reluctant to take that first bite. “Fresh is best,” said Jennifer. “Don’t be a chocolate hoarder. ucked away on Bunsen Avenue in an industrial section of Ventura is one of the area’s most delightful hidden gems: Axtell Expressions, internationally acclaimed but little known outside of the entertainment industry. Inside a series of connected rooms the casual observer will see big plastic eyeballs, feathers and fabric in every color of the rainbow, people walking by with latex heads in hand, ceramic molds (some shaped like eggs), even furniture in whimsical shapes and patterns. Axtell is one of the biggest names in an admittedly niche market, and the man who pulls the strings is Steve Axtell, popularly known in the industry as “the next Jim Henson.” 8

Warm and friendly with a face as animated as one of his own creations, Axtell evinces the kind of madcap energy and childlike enthusiasm one would expect from someone who spends his life designing puppets. He gets excited showing off his products, laughing as they operate as intended, reveling in the opportunity to put a puppet on his arm and eagerly sharing its secrets. Axtell’s fertile mind has yielded more than 100 completely original characters, designed as puppets or ventriloquist dummies or equipped with motors and such for animatronic action. He’s also designed comedy props, magic tricks, music, routines and more. And while it’s true that Axtell relies on a team of assemblers, engineers, programmers and more to make the magic happen, all the ideas and designs come strictly from him. “I can’t stop it,” Axtell says of his creative drive. “I’ve got notebooks from 1982 — just old Mead notebooks. I write down ideas and thoughts and I’ve done it since 1982.”

CHILD’S PLAY But Axtell’s love of puppets goes back further than that. As a child living in Ohio, he was obsessed with Kukla, Fran and Ollie and Sesame Street. “It opened my mind to what a puppet could do,” Axtell recalls. “It made it so much more alive to me.” He made his first puppet at age 6, and kept at the art into his teens. He also practiced magic and puppetry. When he was 14, he made replicas of some of Jim Henson’s Muppets (Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog and Ernie were among his copies). His proud father sent pictures and a letter to Henson — who, miraculously, wrote back. Axtell says he was given two important pieces of advice. The first: join a guild (yes, puppeteers have their own guilds), which can be a great source of support, knowledge and networking for those interested in a niche market. Axtell was also told to “start making your own designs — find your own look. A lot of companies now make copies of Muppets. I was redirected early on to find my own look.”

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ Puppetry and magic were always a part of Axtell’s life (he sold his first custom puppet at age 15), but his first career was in physical therapy. One of his clients had a son, Kurt, who became a friend. One day, Kurt said, “I’m going to California. Do you want to go with me for

three months?” “I dropped everything,” Axtell recalls. His father had recently died, and a road trip to the other side of the country sounded like the perfect plan. He distinctly remembers sleeping on the beach (in Malibu, across from Neptune’s Net) the first night they were in California. It was a dream come true . . . at first. “We did not know about the tide,” he says with a laugh, relating how waves and seaweed came crashing in. “It was a real pirate adventure for two kids from Ohio.” Axtell’s background in physical therapy helped him land a job at Camarillo State Hospital in the psychiatric technology program. After getting married in 1980, he moved to San Luis Obispo County, working at Atascadero State Hospital while his wife, Suzi, pursued an interior design degree at Cal Poly. The couple moved back to Ventura after graduation and Axtell resumed work at Camarillo State Hospital. His time there was fruitful, if not fulfilling. A man of many talents, he was asked to do lifesize murals on some of the walls (these “Axtell murals” still decorate the now-California State University Channel Islands). He also had the opportunity to work with people on the autism spectrum. “We were working with a team trying to revitalize behavioral modification techniques,” he explains. “We worked on cutting-edge stuff.” Axtell often used puppets in his work, with impressive results. He’d hear from parents, for example, that the first time their child spoke was with or to a puppet. “Many people with autism are riveted by Axtell products,” he says. “For some reason, they’re drawn to this world I created. . . . They can connect with a puppet — it bypasses some mental pathways.” Looking back, he says, “I thought I was entertaining. But I was doing art therapy.”

SHOW BUSINESS When he wasn’t working at the hospital, Axtell was selling handcrafted puppets on the side, and performing on weekends. It was Suzi who encouraged him to think bigger. “Why don’t you start your own business?” she would say to him. After their son was born, Axtell realized, “This is do or die. I’ve got a great job, but our business is growing. I need to take the leap.” Axtell became a stay-at-home father . . . and developed his business plan. By 1982, Axtell

Expressions was in business. The connections he had built through the years as a guild member, performer, and salesman paid off. “We were blessed. It took off,” Axtell recalls. “From the beginning, I had so many major performers [as clients].” And a formidable ally in Suzi Axtell. Her knowledge of sewing and design has proved invaluable in sourcing fabrics and other materials. She also runs the staff meetings and the front office. “She’s more the business side,” Axtell explains, adding that her involvement has allowed him to stay involved in the creative side of the company. Steve Axtell may be the face company, but there’s no doubt that Axtell Expressions exists thanks to the efforts of Suzi Axtell as well.

IMAGINATIVE INNOVATION Axtell Expressions is probably best known for two things: puppets and innovation. Axtell has been at the forefront of entertainment technology since the Magic Drawing Board — a whiteboard that adds animated eyes and mouth to anything drawn on it. But as the mastermind himself says, “We’ve gone big into animatronics.” With the help of his technology team, which includes Tech Department Manager John Schmeling and animatronic mechanic Wesley Gonzalez, Axtell has developed a range of systems (from simple to complex to custom) that bring puppets to life. Mouths that move, heads that twist, remote controls and specially designed microphones that allow the puppeteer to move a character’s mouth with his or her own voice — these kinds of developments (many of which are patented) have earned Axtell Expressions a reputation for leading the way in puppet design and movement. The company has clients all over the world, including Six Flags, Disney, 20th Century Fox (ape puppets were used in the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes) and stage performers such as ventriloquists Terry Fator (winner of season 2 of America’s Got Talent) and Darci Lynne Farmer (winner of season 12). Two recent developments have taken Axtell Expressions to the next level, however. The first is Live Virtual Sets, developed in 2015 and first used by theater company DLUX Puppets for its production of Alice in Wonderland. Instead of a traditional set, actors performed in front of a screen that took them through a variety of locations that changed and

moved with the actors. Falling down a rabbit hole, growing bigger and smaller, conversing with animated characters — it was all captured by Axtell’s clever use of rear-screen projection. Think of it as a blend of stage and movie magic. “It’s only on Broadway where they’re doing this kind of stuff,” Axtell says. Even more impressive: The entire setup is portable, with a vast screen that goes on tour with the company. “I developed a simple method an actor can do themselves and travel with it.” A new Live Virtual Set for DLUX’s upcoming production of Peter Pan will debut this month at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek.

SMART ENTERTAINMENT The next big development just came out at the end of 2018: Axtell Intelligence. Eighteen months in the making, this system allows animatronic puppets to sing, dance and even communicate with their audience. The first AI product to debut was a large “flock” of chickens (more than 100) sold to Frizzle Chicken Farmhouse Cafe in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Scattered on shelves throughout the restaurant are “coops” of six birds which “sing” (in clucks, gobbles and other chicken-like noises) and sway with careful choreography to more than a dozen well-known songs, such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” or Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.” They’re a big crowd pleaser, but they have competition. Standalone models on the floor are triggered by voice, and programmed with a database of responses modeled after common questions. These chickens tell jokes, make silly comments and so on. Axtell’s design has an element of spontaneity built in: There are several possible responses to any single basic question, plus generic options for queries that don’t have an easy answer, and the company updates the database regularly based on the kinds of questions customers are asking. A similar “smart” puppet, “The World’s Oldest Man,” is also available. Robert Kalina is the project manager for Frizzle, and has been impressed with Axtell’s products . . . and the man himself. “While being in the entertainment business for 20 years, I can say I have never met anyone like Steve Axtell,” Kalina says. “He is so creative, innovative and has the rare ability to combine current technology with humor.” Axtell confirms that Axtell Intelligence is “working flawlessley,” but the demand for new content is so great that his team won’t be able to

keep up. So, he is developing an interface that will allow owners to customize the questions and responses. “We’re now crafting a front end to let customers upload their own voice and commands, or questions,” he explains.

THE NEXT STEP The Axtell Intelligence arm of the company has already grown by leaps and bounds. Axtell has had meetings with Universal Studios, and has had a lot of inquiries — particularly for parrots, interestingly enough. Currently, he’s working on a tiki-inspired character that he thinks will be big in bars. One of the system’s selling points is its adaptability, and Axtell expects this to be a major area of growth for the company. “[Axtell Intelligence] can work with other company’s characters, too,” he says. These other companies will have to pay a service fee, but the user interface will allow Axtell to get the technology in numerous other places. “That’s another reason we’re excited: A lot of companies overseas want to do this.” “As we produce more characters, it grows out,” Axtell continues. “It involves a bigger and bigger team. It becomes an industry of its own. Puppets are still our bread and butter, but the animatronics and AI are a different customer . . . and a higher-paying customer.” Axtell Expressions has been able to access this customer not just with bleeding-edge technology, but with a commitment to quality and an excellent reputation in the industry. “I have a lot of connections — and they will often say, ‘Steve’s crew can do that.’ A lot of it is creative thinking and networking. And being honest and good,” Axtell says. And he still has more tricks up his sleeve. At the upcoming KAX Conference of Variety Family Performers, taking place Jan. 23-26 in Los Angeles, the company will be wowing attendees with new products. “We’ll be introducing two new AI characters, incredible new magic tricks, and some new puppets. All the entertainers will be using them!” Axtell says with characteristic excitement. That may be the secret to what makes this unique company in Ventura so special. FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY Resolve to indulge and relax at Dana Point’s Monarch Beach Resort. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

W

hat better place to float like a butterfly and land like a busy bee than Dana Point, just a two-hour drive from Ventura and home to the amazing Monarch Beach Resort. It made for the perfect post-holiday destination to indulge, relax and prepare for 2019. My best friend, Ewy, and I headed south and checked in for two nights, with the intention of recovering from our respective family and holiday stresses while having a last blast before bracing for the new year ahead. The Monarch Beach Resort is a sprawling, but easily navigated, five-story resort hotel set on a hill that slopes gently down to the golf course and coastline. Elegantly designed by Rodrigo Vargas Design with a restrained hand, the public areas and guest rooms are bright and airy. Pale celadon walls create a calming effect in the rooms; marble bathrooms are sumptuous and our spacious suite had a small balcony with a lovely view. After checking in, we scoped out the lobby bar, where live music added to the festive atmosphere. We opted for a healthy walk down to the golf course and beyond for a spectacular ocean sunset view with Catalina Island silhouetted in the distance. Then we dressed for dinner at Michael Mina’s upscale restaurant, Bourbon Steak. The handsome and inviting dining room features low lighting, comfy booths, superb service and a stellar menu. The indulgent listings were well explained by our waitress. Although heavy on steaks (obviously) that include a variety of American Waygu beef cuts, the incredible array of additional offerings included plenty of shellfish and seafood: lobster, caviar, oysters as well as tasty appetizers and sides. We started with a cocktail prepared tableside from the martini trolley — an experience in itself. The menu included numerous options and our choice of Nolet’s Gin or Ketel One Vodka. (Carl Nolet, Jr., eleventh-generation spirit maker, lives in the area and pops in regularly.). Ewy chose a fresh version with peach and cucumber bitters; I went for the dirty martini with blue cheese olives. My libation was topped with a couple of drops of extra virgin olive oil from an eye-dropper (to make it smoother!), while Ewy’s was infused with a spray of mint tincture. Incredible “truffle butter brioche rolls” and French fries (fried in duck fat - there goes the New Year resolution diet!) with dipping sauces were served to accompany our heavenly martinis. }}

For starters, we indulged in the “OC” salad of lobster, avocado and Bibb lettuce with a local citrus dressing and the “instant” bacon in Bourbon soy glaze with daikon, kimchi and succulent little squares of pork belly coated in masago arare (pearls of crispy rice). Our entrees included the amazing Hon Jake Scottish salmon and the Mediterranean sea bass. Both were perfectly prepared. Crispy Brussels sprouts with apple slivers and totally irresistible creamy mashed potatoes pleased as much as the tasty fennel salad sides. Executive Chef Bryan Brown is killing it! Dinner at this selfcontained oasis was one of the best of the year. We awoke the next morning lazy, slightly heavy from the food and ready to atone for our sins. A spa day would include a yoga class on the beach, meditation at day’s end and one of the signature treatments: the 90 minute Shamana-Karma body ritual. This Ayurvedic-inspired treatment promised to “purify and boost immunity and spirits.” Lemongrass, mint, nutmeg and clove was steamed for a poultice rub. My “type” was determined to be “kapha,” so an invigorating, warming and revitalizing kapha oil massage and a scalp massage of rosemary and peppermint ensued. The oil bath was followed by an aromatic wrap and then by a hibiscus plant-powder scrub. The entire treatment not only restored my skin and spirits, but my therapist, Natalie, told me I would sleep really well (which I did, I had tossed and turned the night before) and my digestion would improve. The spa has a soaking Jacuzzi with a waterfall feature, eucalyptus steam rooms, saunas and relaxation rooms with tea and nibbles. I checked out the lap pool at the spa (there is a large outdoor pool and kid’s pool at the resort as well) and passed by a class of aerial yoga participants swinging in hammocks. The spa therapist told me that she had tried the floating meditation, where you are rocked in a silk hammock to the sounds of crystal bowls. “I felt like a marshmallow afterwards!” Natalie said. A group of us met at the spa for a late afternoon yoga class on the beach followed by the Blue Mindful Meditation class. We rode a trolley that looked like a woody, complete with Beach Boys music played loudly, on a Mr. Toad’s wild ride down to the lovely crescent of beach. Instructor Walter easily demonstrated the moves. I struggled to keep up, but did a good imitation of a pretzel, which made me realize that I really need to work on my balance and flexibility in the new year. It got too cold to remain for meditation, so we went to the Monarch Beach Club for a hot toddy, tasty squash soup and shrimp pot stickers — all enjoyed with an ocean sunset view. It’s an easy two-hour drive from Ventura to Dana Point if you time it correctly and take the toll road that turns off toward the coast from the 405. The resort and its fab restaurants, spa and golf course are definitely a splurge worthy any time of year. The Monarch Beach Resort would also make a great place to take your Valentine for an indulgent romantic getaway. A “Couples Relaxation Retreat” includes a soothing bath followed by massages and quality time together in the co-ed relaxation area. Five-star resort, 5-star restaurant, 5-star spa: All in all, it adds up to a sky full of stars for Monarch Beach Resort. Oh and about those New Year’s resolutions?
