Baseball’s Made History in Scottsdale By Joan Fudala, community historian

Every March, Scottsdale becomes the epicenter for baseball, with three major league teams training here, and scores of youth and adult leagues filling ball fields around the community. Although our long-time love affair with America’s pastime peaks in March, we’re really a year-round baseball city, and the game’s had a big impact on Scottsdale’s history, lifestyle and economy. Founder/namesake Winfield Scott played baseball at the University of Rochester in the late 1850s; baseball came to the Arizona Territory when soldiers posted at forts played ball in their rare free time. With no major league baseball teams west of the Mississippi until after World War II, baseball was primarily an amateur’s game in Arizona’s early years. From the 1920s to 1960s, local men played on the Scottsdale Blues and women on the Scottsdale Reds. Some even played a raucous game while riding donkeys.

During lunch at Scottsdale’s Pink Pony in spring 1955, businessmen asked visiting Orioles executive Paul Richards if he’d bring his team to Scottsdale for spring training, joining the New York Giants and Cleveland Indians in the fledgling Cactus League. He said he’d consider it if Scottsdale built a ballpark. Accepting the challenge, the Scottsdale Baseball Club formed, leased land on Osborn Road, began pre-selling seats in the yet-to-be-built ballpark, and broke ground in June. The new Scottsdale Ballpark hosted an exhibition game of major league stars in November 1955; Cincinnati Reds’ Ted Kluszewski hit the ballpark’s first homerun. The Baltimore Orioles inaugurated spring training in Scottsdale in 1956. The Boston Red Sox – including iconic slugger Ted Williams – replaced the Orioles in 1959, holding their spring games here through 1965.

Future Baltimore Orioles pitching legend Jim Palmer was a three-sport letter- man at Scottsdale High School in the early 1960s. No major league team played at the Scottsdale Ballpark in 1966. Meanwhile, the Scottsdale Charros, which had assumed spring training hosting duties from the Scottsdale Baseball Club, scouted for a new team. College and amateur teams used the ballpark in the interim. The whole town celebrated when the Chicago Cubs agreed to use Scottsdale’s ballpark for spring training in 1967. Little did we know that a “practice 2017 World Series” would take place on March 17, 1967 when the Cubs played the Cleveland Indians here. During the Cubs’ years, the Scottsdale Baptist Hospital auxiliary began parking cars at the ballpark for donations, California Gov. Ronald Reagan attended games and “Leo the Lip” Durocher was the colorful team manager. When the Cubs opted to move to Mesa, the Oakland A’s began a three-year stint as Scottsdale’s spring team, 1979 to 1981. In 1982, the San Francisco Giants replaced the A’s as Scottsdale’s resident team, and continue to draw record crowds every year. At the Giants’ urging, the old, wooden ballpark was replaced with a multi-purpose stadium in 1992; several other upgrades have enhanced the player and fan experience. From 1992 to 1997, the Phoenix Firebirds minor league team called Scottsdale Stadium home. Salt River Fields on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community opened as spring home to the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011. The Scottsdale Stadium/Indian School Park Complex and Salt River Fields have baseball activity year-round, with rookie leagues, rehab and practice. The Scottsdale Scorpions of Major League Baseball’s Arizona Fall League have played at Scottsdale Stadium since the early 1990s. Today, 15 major league teams converge in metro-Phoenix for Spring Training, creating an economic impact of $544 million annually, according to the Cactus League, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.
