There’s Drama, Comedy in Scottsdale’s History

APRIL 2019

Looking back at Scottsdale’s history, one finds plenty of drama….and comedy. In politics? No; rather in local theaters, schools and outdoor venues where amateur groups and professional troupes have performed for our entertainment or enrichment. The 1909-vintage Scottsdale Grammar School (Scottsdale Historical Museum now) had a stage in its basement for plays and programs. Townsfolk also gathered on and around the (former) steps of the school to watch al fresco performances by student thespians. Native Americans demonstrated cultural dances, songs and rites in Pow-Wows held in Echo Canyon on Camelback Mountain for guests of Scottsdale’s Ingleside Inn, circa the 1910s and 1920s. Guests enjoyed the shows and a catered, white-table-clothed dinner. Several playwrights have called the Scottsdale area home, including Roy George (who lived in the former Adobe House in the 1920s); Dale Wasserman (who wrote “Man of La Mancha”), and Terry Earp, who passed away Feb. 15. Among Terry’s plays: “Mrs. Wyatt Earp,” “The Gentleman Doc Holliday,” “Wyatt Earp: A Life on the Frontier,” “A Touch of Tortilla.”.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his wife Olgivanna encouraged apprentices at Taliesin West to expand their cultural experiences. Students performed in plays in the school’s cabaret facility; an invitation was a ‘plum’ for Scottsdale residents. From the late 1940s to the early 1970s, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic parish produced the “Miracle of the Roses” pageant each December. Artists decorated downtown Scottsdale streets, mariachis led the procession and youth performed in the story of the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Former Ambassador to Italy, playwright and magazine publisher Clare Booth Luce created a mosaic of Our Lady that was carried in the procession. The Scottsdale Community Players organized in 1952, using the Scottsdale High Auditorium for its first production, “Life with Father.” They moved into an out-building of the Adobe House Community Center and named it the Stagebrush Theater. After years of fund-raising through performances and a capital campaign, the little theater group moved into the Joe Wong-designed Stagebrush Theater on Second Street just west of Marshall Way in October 1968. The facility is now home to youth theatrical group, Greasepaint.

Cattletrack co-founder Rachel Ellis, a talented seamstress, created countless costumes for regional performances during the 1940s through early 2000s. Her daughter Janie, who choreographed many of those productions and now manages Cattletrack, commissioned a book, Cattletrack Couture, which depicts many of her mother’s creations. Louise Lincoln Kerr built a home and music studio in the 1950s which she bequeathed to Arizona State University. The Kerr Cultural Center is a cozy venue for plays, concerts and cultural lectures. The Windmill Dinner Theater opened in 1971 on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard. It became infamous when Bob Crane, starring in “Beginner’s Luck” in June 1978, was murdered in his Scottsdale rental apartment.

In October 1975, the long-anticipated Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts held its first theatrical production, “The Great American Nut Show.” Over the years, in addition to concerts and community events, many comedies, musicals and dramas have graced the stage, from the Capitol Steps, to Sister’s Catechism, to Shakespeare Festivals, performances by the Arizona Civic Theater, and the community-sponsored “Scottsdale Follies” revues. Scottsdale Arts also operated a former IMAX at the Galleria as Theatre 4301 circa 2004-9, staging “Menopause the Musical,” “Yogi” (starring Ben Gazarra) and more. Coronado High alumni will remember drama teacher Jim Newcomer, who also starred in local theater. He also frequently portrayed Scottsdale founder/namesake Winfield Scott at local events. Other venues -- from Desert Stages, to Don Bluth Front Row Theatre, high school auditoriums, churches, Desert Foothills Theater, Cattletrack Gallery, Scottsdale Community College Performing Arts Center – continue to make history before grateful audiences.
