Kids’ Adventures Plentiful in Early Scottsdale JULY 2018
Today’s children and teens – if deprived of their smart phones, tablets, TV or digital music – would probably whine “I’m bored; there’s nothing to do.” So what was life like in early Scottsdale – long before kids were glued to their electronic devices? When Chaplain Winfield and Helen Scott homesteaded what is now downtown Scottsdale in 1888, their daughters were already adults and living elsewhere. The Scotts, however, tried to entertain and educate the growing number of kids in the settlement. Scott told school children about his time in the Civil War as a thrice-wounded infantry captain; he also played Santa for the town’s Christmas gathering and Mrs. Scott gave each child an orange from their grove. Since Scottsdale was a farming and ranching town for its first six decades, children worked on their family’s farm from the earliest age. Before and after school, kids milked cows and tended chickens as well as crops. Although strictly forbidden today, kids (and adults) swam in irrigation ditches nearly year-round. Risk-taking teens tried ‘surfing’ the canals by riding a board being towed by a Model T or jitney. Grandkids of EO Brown (founding partner of Brown’s Ranch/DC Ranch) used the ranch’s cattle tanks as swimming pools.

There were always things to watch: crews and their horses dredging the Arizona and Cross-cut Canals; Cavie Cavalliere shoeing horses or making iron implements at his forge; early cars being repaired at the Scottsdale Service Station or Scotty’s Shop. Boys and dads hunted doves, quail and rabbits in ‘the slough,’ now known as the Indian Bend Wash (decades before it was made into an award-winning series of parks that also serve for flood control). Kids also fished in the canals. At one time there were three pool halls in Scottsdale. Paul Messinger often recalls that one pool hall owner posted the boys’ grades at the entrance, and if a lad’s grades fell below a cut-off line, he couldn’t enter until his grades improved. Johnny Rose, one of the pool hall owners (in the building now occupied by Mexican Imports on Brown Avenue at Main Street) also showed silent movies there during the 1910s and 1920s. Scottsdale didn’t have its own dedicated movie theatre until 1948 when Malcolm White opened the T-Bar-T on Main Street. Kids flocked to T-Bar-T’s Saturday matinees; the theater also had a crying room so that new mom’s could see a movie with their fussy babies.

Nearly every kid had a horse, or access to one. Many rode a horse to school. Family and community picnics kept kids entertained and provided endless outdoor adventures – at Hole in the Rock at Papago Park; in Echo Canyon; at EE “Brownie” Brown’s annual steer roast; or way up north near Pinnacle Peak. Church played an important role in the lives of children in early Scottsdale – Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, church youth group activities and social events held in the Baptist, Methodist or Old Mission church buildings.

School sporting events drew spectators from throughout early Scottsdale. Scottsdale High fielded the SHS Beavers football team; girls played softball, and the high school had a tennis team as early as the 1940s. Scottsdale Grammar School held an annual Maypole dance, had students participate in calisthenics and rifle drills and hosted plays on the stage in the lower level of the Little Red Schoolhouse. With a population that only numbered in the hundreds and not much car traffic, Scottsdale-boys often played marbles in the middle of the dusty Main Street
or Brown Avenue.
During World War II, Scottsdale children eagerly collected scrap and tilled their Victory Gardens. They were also thrilled to see Stearman bi-planes buzzing overhead, flown by aviation cadets training at Thunderbird II airfield north of town. A lucky few even got to see movies as guests of workers at the German POW camp in Papago Park.
