Scottsdale’s a Bike-friendly Community

Bikes in bright colors have grabbed headlines lately, and the City Council is studying how to regulate bike-sharing programs in Scottsdale. Are bikes a new phenomenon, or does Scottsdale have a cycling history? For its first six decades, Scottsdale was a farming and ranching town, and horses were the most common form of transportation. Until incorporation in 1951, there were only two or three paved streets. But kids still loved riding bikes. AJ Lieber, who grow up here in the 1930s on Main Street in a house that is now the Old Town Tortilla Factory, recalled riding a tricycle around town. In his memoir Road to Scottsdale, he said his father rigged up a dog carrier that AJ pulled behind his bike, giving scenic rides to his dachshunds. Bill Kimsey, writing in his memoir Recollections of Early Scottsdale, said about his pre-World War II growing up years, “the nearest public pool was in Tempe, a six-mile bicycle ride each way. Some of us made this bike ride almost daily during the long, hot summers. However, I don’t remember that we ever felt deprived.”

During the 1940s, Paul Messinger delivered daily newspapers throughout Scottsdale on his bike. He pedaled over 11 miles twice a day to deliver papers, and got to know everyone in town. Coincidentally, in the 1990s, the former Lieber house was a biker-themed restaurant called Scooters. The Wheelery, Scottsdale’s first bike shop, opened on Brown Avenue in January 1957. Now there are many to choose from in Scottsdale. In 1963, a Pinnacle Peak area businessman named Don Pablo applied to the county for a permit to build a 65,000-seat sports amphitheater on the northeast corner of Pinnacle Peak and Scottsdale roads. One of his planned uses was to be motorcycle racing. Several landowners filed suit. Today, it’s the site of the much quieter The Pinnacle of Scottsdale shopping center. The City of Scottsdale, thanks to recommendations from residents participating in the Scottsdale Town Enrichment Program in the mid-1960s, included bike paths in parks and transportation

plans. In 1972 the city began to plan its renowned bicycle pathway system. When the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt Flood Control Project was complete in 1985 it featured many miles of bike paths. Volunteers started a Handlebar Helpers program in Scottsdale in 1994 in which youth could earn a bike through community service. The program also offered bike repair apprentice services. After years as aa City of Scottsdale community assistance program, it has been taken over by STARS, the Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Service. Operating from the Paiute Neighborhood Center, Handlebar Helpers gives STARS participants job skills in bike repair and benefits STARS through sales of rehabbed bikes. Since its creation in 1994, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve has been a favorite spot for mountain bikers (only non-motorized bikes allowed).

With great weather and challenging changes in elevation, Scottsdale has become a popular spot for bike races. The Cactus Cup mountain bike race was held in the 1990s. Since 2004, the annual Tour de Scottsdale attracts hundreds of riders. The next event is Oct. 7, 2018. For more than a dozen years, Scottsdale Public Art has sponsored a Cycle the Arts ride, taking participants on a tour of public art installations throughout Scottsdale. In 2005, Public Art even featured an interactive bike art installation as part of- the Scottsdale Arts Festival. People could get on a bike in the exhibit and, working with others, gain momentum and get an interesting visual result from their efforts.
